Using a Predator-Prey Model to Explain Variations of Cloud Spot Price

The spot pricing scheme has been considered to be resource-efficient for providers and cost-effective for consumers in the Cloud market. Nevertheless, unlike the static and straightforward strategies of trading on-demand and reserved Cloud services, the market-driven mechanism for trading spot service would be complicated for both implementation and understanding. The largely invisible market activities and their complex interactions could especially make Cloud consumers hesitate to enter the spot market. To reduce the complexity in understanding the Cloud spot market, we decided to reveal the backend information behind spot price variations. Inspired by the methodology of reverse engineering, we developed a Predator-Prey model that can simulate the interactions between demand and resource based on the visible spot price traces. The simulation results have shown some basic regular patterns of market activities with respect to Amazon's spot instance type m3.large. Although the findings of this study need further validation by using practical data, our work essentially suggests a promising approach (i.e.~using a Predator-Prey model) to investigate spot market activities.

A Survey on Modeling Energy Consumption of Cloud Applications: Deconstruction, State of the Art, and Trade-off Debates

Given the complexity and heterogeneity in Cloud computing scenarios, the modeling approach has widely been employed to investigate and analyze the energy consumption of Cloud applications, by abstracting real-world objects and processes that are difficult to observe or understand directly. It is clear that the abstraction sacrifices, and usually does not need, the complete reflection of the reality to be modeled. Consequently, current energy consumption models vary in terms of purposes, assumptions, application characteristics and environmental conditions, with possible overlaps between different research works. Therefore, it would be necessary and valuable to reveal the state-of-the-art of the existing modeling efforts, so as to weave different models together to facilitate comprehending and further investigating application energy consumption in the Cloud domain. By systematically selecting, assessing and synthesizing 76 relevant studies, we rationalized and organized over 30 energy consumption models with unified notations. To help investigate the existing models and facilitate future modeling work, we deconstructed the runtime execution and deployment environment of Cloud applications, and identified 18 environmental factors and 12 workload factors that would be influential on the energy consumption. In particular, there are complicated trade-offs and even debates when dealing with the combinational impacts of multiple factors.

A Monolithic Topologically Protected Phononic Circuit

Precise control of elastic waves in modes and coherences is of great use in reinforcing nowadays elastic energy harvesting/storage, nondestructive testing, wave-mater interaction, high sensitivity sensing and information processing, etc. All these implementations are expected to have elastic transmission with lower transmission losses and higher degree of freedom in transmission path. Inspired by topological states of quantum matters, especially quantum spin Hall effects (QSHEs) providing passive solutions of unique disorder-immune surface states protected by underlying nontrivial topological invariants of the bulk, thus solving severe performance trade-offs in experimentally realizable topologically ordered states. Here, we demonstrate experimentally the first elastic analogue of QSHE, by a concise phononic crystal plate with only perforated holes. Strong elastic spin-orbit coupling is realized accompanied by the first topologically-protected phononic circuits with both robustness and negligible propagation loss overcoming many circuit- and system-level performance limits induced by scattering. This elegant approach in a monolithic substrate opens up the possibility of realizing topological materials for phonons in both static and time-dependent regimes, can be immediately applied to multifarious chip-scale devices with both topological protection and massive integration, such as on-chip elastic wave-guiding, elastic splitter, elastic resonator with high quality factor, and even (pseudo-)spin filter.

Gapped spin-1/2 spinon excitations in a new kagome quantum spin liquid compound Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr

We report a new kagome quantum spin liquid candidate Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr, which does not experience any phase transition down to 50 mK, more than three orders lower than the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature ($\sim$ 200 K). A clear gap opening at low temperature is observed in the uniform spin susceptibility obtained from $^{19}$F nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. We observe the characteristic magnetic field dependence of the gap as expected for fractionalized spin-1/2 spinon excitations. Our experimental results provide firm evidence for spin fractionalization in a topologically ordered spin system, resembling charge fractionalization in the fractional quantum Hall state.

A Methodology of Guiding Web Content Mining and Knowledge Discovery in Evidence-based Software Engineering

Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is a rigorous methodology applied for Evidence-Based Software Engineering (EBSE) that identify, assess and synthesize the relevant evidence for answering specific research questions. Benefiting from the booming online materials in the era of Web 2.0, the technical Web content starts acting as alternative sources for EBSE. Web knowledge has been investigated and derived from Web content mining and knowledge discovery techniques, however they are still significantly different from reviewing academic literature. Thus the direct adoption of Web knowledge in EBSE lacks of systematic guidelines. In this paper, we propose to make an SLR adaptation to bridge the aforementioned gap along two stages. Firstly, we follow the general logic and procedure of SLR to regulate Web mining activities. Secondly, we substitute and enhance particular SLR processes with Web-mining-friendly methods and approaches. At the second stage, we mainly focus on adapting Conducting Review by integrating a set of automated components ranging from programmatic searching to various text mining techniques.

Amplification of entangled photon states by klystron

Entangled photon pairs-discrete light quanta that exhibit non-classical correlations-play a central role in quantum information and quantum communication technologies. It is a natural demand from technological applications on the intensity of the entangled photon pairs, such that sufficient signal strength can be achieved. Here we propose approaches based on klystron tubes that could potentially achieve stable amplification of the entangled photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) and entanglement transfer.

Electron-ion coupling in semiconductors beyond Fermi's golden rule

In the present work, a theoretical study of electron-phonon (electron-ion) coupling rates in semiconductors driven out of equilibrium is performed. Transient change of optical coefficients reflects the band gap shrinkage in covalently bonded materials, and thus, the heating of atomic lattice. Utilizing this dependence, we test various models of electron-ion coupling. The simulation technique is based on tight-binding molecular dynamics. Our simulations with the dedicated hybrid approach (XTANT) indicate that the widely used Fermi's golden rule can break down describing material excitation on femtosecond time scales. In contrast, dynamical coupling proposed in this work yields a reasonably good agreement of simulation results with available experimental data.

Radiation-damage-free ghost diffraction with atomic resolution

The X-ray free electron lasers (XFEL) can enable diffractive structural determination of protein crystals or single molecules that are too radiation-sensitive for conventional X-ray analysis. However the electronic form factor could have been modified during the ultrashort X-ray pulse due to photoionization and electron cascade caused by the intense X-ray pulse. For general X-ray imaging techniques, to minimize radiation damage effect is of major concern to ensure faithful reconstruction of the structure. Here we show that a radiation-damage-free diffraction can be achieved with an atomic spatial resolution, by using X-ray parametric down-conversion (XPDC), and two-color two-photon ghost diffraction. We illustrate that the formation of the diffraction patterns satisfies a condition analogous to the Bragg equation, with a resolution that could be as fine as the lattice length scale of several Angstrom. Because the samples are illuminated by the optical photons of low energy, they can be free of radiation damage.

A sixth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme for hyperbolic conservation laws

In this paper, A new sixth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme, refered as the WENO-6, is proposed in the finite volume framework for the hyperbolic conservation laws. Instead of selecting one stencil for each cell in the classical WENO scheme [10], two independent stencils are used for two ends of the considering cell in the current approach. Meanwhile, the stencils, which are used for the reconstruction of variables at both sides of interface, are symmetrical. Compared with the classical WENO scheme [10], the current WENO scheme achieves one order of improvement in accuracy with the same stencil. The reconstruction procedure is defined by a convex combination of reconstructed values at cell interface, which are constructed from two quadratic and two cubic polynomials. The essentially non-oscillatory property is achieved by the similar weighting methodology as the classical WENO scheme. A variety of numerical examples are presented to validate the accuracy and robustness of the current scheme.

BAUM: A DNA Assembler by Adaptive Unique Mapping and Local Overlap-Layout-Consensus

Genome assembly from the high-throughput sequencing (HTS) reads is a fundamental yet challenging computational problem. An intrinsic challenge is the uncertainty caused by the widespread repetitive elements. Here we get around the uncertainty using the notion of uniquely mapped (UM) reads, which motivated the design of a new assembler BAUM. It mainly consists of two types of iterations. The first type of iterations constructs initial contigs from a reference, say a genome of a species that could be quite distant, by adaptive read mapping, filtration by the reference's unique regions, and reference updating. A statistical test is proposed to split the layouts at possible structural variation sites. The second type of iterations includes mapping, scaffolding/contig-extension, and contig merging. We extend each contig by locally assembling the reads whose mates are uniquely mapped to an end of the contig. Instead of the de Bruijn graph method, we take the overlap-layout-consensus (OLC) paradigm. The OLC is implemented by parallel computation, and has linear complexity with respect to the number of contigs. The adjacent extended contigs are merged if their alignment is confirmed by the adjusted gap distance. Throughout the assembling, the mapping criterion is selected by probabilistic calculations. These innovations can be used complementary to the existing de novo assemblers. Applying this novel method to the assembly of wild rice Oryza longistaminata genome, we achieved much improved contig N50, 18.8k, compared with other assemblers. The assembly was further validated by contigs constructed from an independent library of long 454 reads.

Interface induced high temperature superconductivity in single unit-cell FeSe films on SrTiO3(110)

We report high temperature superconductivity in one unit-cell (1-UC) FeSe films grown on STO(110) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. By in-situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurement, we observed a superconducting gap as large as 17 meV. Transport measurements on 1-UC FeSe/STO(110) capped with FeTe layers reveal superconductivity with an onset TC of 31.6 K and an upper critical magnetic field of 30.2 T. We also find that the TC can be further increased by an external electric field, but the effect is smaller than that on STO(001) substrate. The study points out the important roles of interface related charge transfer and electron-phonon coupling in the high temperature superconductivity of FeSe/STO.

Lattice Boltzmann Method Simulation of 3-D Melting Using Double MRT Model with Interfacial Tracking Method

Three-dimensional melting problems are investigated numerically with Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Regarding algorithm's accuracy and stability, Multiple-Relaxation-Time (MRT) models are employed to simplify the collision term in LBM. Temperature and velocity fields are solved with double distribution functions, respectively. 3-D melting problems are solved with double MRT models for the first time in this article. The key point for the numerical simulation of a melting problem is the methods to obtain the location of the melting front and this article uses interfacial tracking method. The interfacial tracking method combines advantages of both deforming and fixed grid approaches. The location of the melting front was obtained by calculating the energy balance at the solid-liquid interface. Various 3-D conduction controlled melting problems are solved firstly to verify the numerical method. Liquid fraction tendency and temperature distribution obtained from numerical methods agree with the analytical results well. The proposed double MRT model with interfacial tracking method is valid to solve 3-D melting problems. Different 3-D convection controlled melting problems are then solved with the proposed numerical method. Various locations of the heat surface have different melting front moving velocities, due to the natural convection effects. Rayleigh number's effects to the 3-D melting process is discussed.

Effects of Slotted Structures on Nonlinear Characteristics of Natural Convection in a Cylinder with an Internal Concentric Slotted Annulus

Natural convection in a cylinder with an internally slotted annulus was solved by SIMPLE algorithm, and the effects of different slotted structures on nonlinear characteristics of natural convection were investigated. The results show that the equivalent thermal conductivity Keq increases with Rayleigh number, and reaches the maximum in the vertical orientation. Nonlinear results were obtained by simulating the fluid flow at different conditions. With increasing Rayleigh number, heat transfer is intensified and the state of heat transfer changes from the steady to unsteady. We investigated different slotted structures effects on natural convection, and analyze the corresponding nonlinear characteristics.

Double MRT Thermal Lattice Boltzmann Method for Simulating Natural Convection of Low Prandtl Number Fluids

The purposes of this paper are testing an efficiency algorithm based on LBM and using it to analyze two-dimensional natural convection with low Prandtl number. Steady state or oscillatory results are obtained using double multiple-relaxation-time thermal lattice Boltzmann method. The velocity and temperature fields are solved using D2Q9 and D2Q5 models, respectively. With different Rayleigh number, the tested natural convection can either achieve to steady state or oscillatory. With fixed Rayleigh number, lower Prandtl number leads to a weaker convection effect, longer oscillation period and higher oscillation amplitude for the cases reaching oscillatory solutions. At fixed Prandtl number, higher Rayleigh number leads to a more notable convection effect and longer oscillation period. Double multiple-relaxation-time thermal lattice Boltzmann method is applied to simulate the low Prandtl number fluid natural convection. Rayleigh number and Prandtl number effects are also investigated when the natural convection results oscillate.

Atomically Resolved FeSe/SrTiO3(001) Interface Structure by Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy

Interface-enhanced high-temperature superconductivity in one unit-cell (UC) FeSe films on SrTiO3(001) (STO) substrate has recently attracted much attention in condensed matter physics and material science. By combined in-situ scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and ex-situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) studies, we report on atomically resolved structure including both lattice constants and actual atomic positions of the FeSe/STO interface under both non-superconducting and superconducting states. We observed TiO2 double layers (DLs) and significant atomic displacements in the top two layers of STO, lattice compression of the Se-Fe-Se triple layer, and relative shift between bottom Se and topmost Ti atoms. By imaging the interface structures under various superconducting states, we unveil a close correlation between interface structure and superconductivity. Our atomic-scale identification of FeSe/STO interface structure provides useful information on investigating the pairing mechanism of this interface-enhanced high-temperature superconducting system.

Lattice Boltzmann Method Simulation of 3-D Natural Convection with Double MRT Model

Multiple-relaxation-time model (MRT) has more advantages than the many others approaches in the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). Three-dimensional double MRT model is proposed for the first time for fluid flow and heat transfer simulation. Three types of cubic natural convection problems are solved with proposed method at various Rayleigh numbers. Two opposite vertical walls on the left and right are kept at different temperatures for all three types, while the remained four walls are either adiabatic or have linear temperature variations. For the first two types of cubic natural convections that four walls are either adiabatic or vary linearly, the present results agreed very well with the benchmark solutions or experimental results in the literature. For the third type of cubic natural convection, the front and back surfaces has linearly variable temperature while the bottom and top surface are adiabatic. The results from the third type exhibited more general three-dimensional characters.

Superconductivity dichotomy in K-coated single and double unit cell FeSe films on SrTiO3

We report the superconductivity evolution of one unit cell (1-UC) and 2-UC FeSe films on SrTiO3(001) substrates with potassium (K) adsorption. By in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurement, we find that the superconductivity in 1-UC FeSe films is continuously suppressed with increasing K coverage, whereas non-superconducting 2-UC FeSe films become superconducting with a gap of ~17 meV or ~11 meV depending on whether the underlying 1-UC films are superconducting or not. This work explicitly reveals that the interface electron-phonon coupling is strongly related to the charge transfer at FeSe/STO interface and plays vital role in enhancing Cooper pairing in both 1-UC and 2-UC FeSe films.
