Superconductivity above 28 K in single unit cell FeSe films interfaced with GaO$_{2-δ}$ layer on NdGaO$_{3}$(110)

We prepared single unit cell FeSe films on GaO$_{2-δ}$ terminated perovskite NdGaO$_{3}$(110) substrates and performed ex situ transport and scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements on the FeTe protected films. Our experimental measurements showed that the single unit cell FeSe films interfaced with GaO$_{2-δ}$ layer are electron doped via interface charge transfer. Most importantly, this type of heterostructure can host interface enhanced superconductivity with an onset temperature of about 28 K, which is much higher than the value of 8 K in bulk FeSe. Our work indicates that FeSe/GaO$_{2-δ}$can be a comparative platform with the FeSe/TiO$_{2-δ}$ family for understanding the mechanism of interface enhanced high temperature superconductivity.

LSCP: Locally Selective Combination in Parallel Outlier Ensembles

In unsupervised outlier ensembles, the absence of ground truth makes the combination of base outlier detectors a challenging task. Specifically, existing parallel outlier ensembles lack a reliable way of selecting competent base detectors, affecting accuracy and stability, during model combination. In this paper, we propose a framework---called Locally Selective Combination in Parallel Outlier Ensembles (LSCP)---which addresses the issue by defining a local region around a test instance using the consensus of its nearest neighbors in randomly selected feature subspaces. The top-performing base detectors in this local region are selected and combined as the model's final output. Four variants of the LSCP framework are compared with seven widely used parallel frameworks. Experimental results demonstrate that one of these variants, LSCP_AOM, consistently outperforms baselines on the majority of twenty real-world datasets.

Nanoscale angular lattice formed by light with high orbital angular

Standing waves generated by the interference of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams can be used for dipole trap. We propose a scheme to create a nanometer (nm) scale ring lattice based on the interference of two high order LG beams without decrease the wavelength. Both of the two LG beams have a monocyclic intensity distribution, and they have the same orbital angular momentum (OAM) quantum number on the order of $10^6$. We are able to theoretically demonstrate a dipole potential along angular direction with the period of $\sim$1 nm , given the waist of the Gaussian beams to be $\sim$0.8 $μ$m. The atoms in this lattice can be trapped along the radial and azimuthal direction in the potential wells of with $\sim$100 nm and $\sim$0.85 nm distance. The proposed method opens up a convenient pathway towards sub-wavelength atom traps that could directly lead to overlap of wave function of atoms in adjacent wells and the formation of molecular bonds.

Exploiting Coarse-to-Fine Task Transfer for Aspect-level Sentiment Classification

Aspect-level sentiment classification (ASC) aims at identifying sentiment polarities towards aspects in a sentence, where the aspect can behave as a general Aspect Category (AC) or a specific Aspect Term (AT). However, due to the especially expensive and labor-intensive labeling, existing public corpora in AT-level are all relatively small. Meanwhile, most of the previous methods rely on complicated structures with given scarce data, which largely limits the efficacy of the neural models. In this paper, we exploit a new direction named coarse-to-fine task transfer, which aims to leverage knowledge learned from a rich-resource source domain of the coarse-grained AC task, which is more easily accessible, to improve the learning in a low-resource target domain of the fine-grained AT task. To resolve both the aspect granularity inconsistency and feature mismatch between domains, we propose a Multi-Granularity Alignment Network (MGAN). In MGAN, a novel Coarse2Fine attention guided by an auxiliary task can help the AC task modeling at the same fine-grained level with the AT task. To alleviate the feature false alignment, a contrastive feature alignment method is adopted to align aspect-specific feature representations semantically. In addition, a large-scale multi-domain dataset for the AC task is provided. Empirically, extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the MGAN.

THz-to-Optical Conversion in Wireless Communications Using an Ultra-Broadband Plasmonic Modulator

Future wireless communication networks have to handle data rates of tens or even hundreds of Gbit/s per link, requiring carrier frequencies in the unallocated terahertz (THz) spectrum. In this context, seamless integration of THz links into existing fiber-optic infrastructures is of great importance to complement the inherent portability and flexibility advantages of wireless networks by the reliable and virtually unlimited capacity of optical transmission systems. On the technological level, this requires novel device and signal processing concepts for direct conversion of data streams between the THz and the optical domains. Here, we report on the first demonstration of a THz link that is seamlessly integrated into a fiber-optic network using direct terahertz-to-optical (T/O) conversion at the wireless receiver. We exploit an ultra-broadband silicon-plasmonic modulator having a 3 dB bandwidth in excess of 0.36 THz for T/O conversion of a 50 Gbit/s data stream that is transmitted on a 0.2885 THz carrier over a 16 m-long wireless link. Optical-to-terahertz (O/T) conversion at the wireless transmitter relies on photomixing in a uni-travelling-carrier photodiode.

Various damage mechanisms in carbon and silicon materials under femtosecond x-ray irradiation

We review the results of our research on damage mechanisms in materials irradiated with femtosecond free-electron-laser (FEL) pulses. They were obtained using our hybrid approach, XTANT (X-ray-induced Thermal And Nonthermal Transitions). Various damage mechanisms are discussed with respect to the pulse fluence and material properties on examples of diamond, amorphous carbon, C60 crystal, and silicon. We indicate conditions: producing thermal melting of targets as a result of electron-ion energy exchange; nonthermal phase transitions due to modification of the interatomic potential; Coulomb explosion due to accumulated net charge in finite-size systems; spallation or ablation at higher fluences due to detachment of sample fragments; and warm dense matter formation. Transient optical coefficients are compared with experimental data whenever available, proving the validity of our modeling approach. Predicted diffraction patterns can be compared with the results of ongoing or future FEL experiments. Limitations of our model and possible future directions of development are outlined.

Exploiting Location Information to Enhance Throughput in Downlink V2I Systems

Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) technology, combined with millimeter wave (mmW) networks, may support high data rates for vehicular communication and therefore provides a whole new set of services. However, in dense urban environment, pedestrians or buildings cause strong blockage to the narrow beams at mmW, severely deteriorating the transmission rate. In this work, we model the downlink mmW V2I system as a simple erasure broadcast channel where the erasure (blockage) event is considered as the state of the channel. While state feedback can be obtained through protocols such as Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ), we also assume that the current state can be estimated through the location information shared by the communication peers. We evaluate, through an information-theoretic approach, the achievable downlink rate in such a system. Despite its highly theoretical nature, our result sheds light on how much the location information can contribute to improve the downlink date rate, e.g., as a function of the mobility (velocity) of the vehicles.

Structural phase transition, precursory electronic anomaly and strong-coupling superconductivity in quasi-skutterudite (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_{3}$Ir$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$ and Ca$_{3}$Rh$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$

The interplay between superconductivity and structural phase transition has attracted enormous interests in recent years. For example, in Fe-pnictide high temperature superconductors, quantum fluctuations in association with structural phase transition have been proposed to lead to many novel physical properties and even the superconductivity itself. Here we report a finding that the quasi-skutterudite superconductors (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_{3}$Ir$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.5, 1) and Ca$_{3}$Rh$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$ show some unusual properties similar to the Fe-pnictides, through $^{119}$Sn nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. In (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_{3}$Ir$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$, the NMR linewidth increases below a temperature $T^*$ that is higher than the structural phase transition temperature $T_{\rm s}$. The spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) divided by temperature ($T$), $1/T_1T$, and the Knight shift $K$ increase with decreasing $T$ down to $T^*$, but start to decrease below $T^*$ and followed by more distinct changes at $T_{\rm s}$. In contrast, none of the anomalies was observed in Ca$_{3}$Rh$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$ that does not undergo a structural phase transition. The precursory phenomenon above structural phase transition resembles that occurs in Fe-pnictides. In the superconducting state of Ca$_{3}$Ir$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$, $1/T_{1}$ decays as ${\rm exp}(-Δ/k_{\rm B}T)$ with a large gap $Δ= 2.21 k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}$, yet without a Hebel-Slichter coherence peak, which indicate strong-coupling superconductivity. Our results provide new insight into the relationship between superconductivity and the electronic-structure change associated with structural phase transition.

Thermal x-ray diffraction and near-field phase contrast imaging

Using higher-order coherence of thermal light sources, the resolution power of standard x-ray imaging techniques can be enhanced. In this work, we applied the higher-order measurement to far-field x-ray diffraction and near-field phase contrast imaging (PCI), in order to achieve superresolution in x-ray diffraction and obtain enhanced intensity contrast in PCI. The cost of implementing such schemes is minimal compared to the methods that achieve similar effects by using entangled x-ray photon pairs.

A Conception of Engineering Design for Remote Unattended Operation Public Observatory

Public observatory project is playing more and more important role in science popularization education and scientific research, and many amateur astronomers also have began to build their own observatories in remote areas. As a result of the limitation of technical condition and construction funds for amateur astronomers, their system often breaks down, and then a stable remote unattended operation system becomes very critical. Hardware connection and control is the basic and core part in observatory design. Here we propose a conception of engineering hardware design for public observatory operation as a bridge between observatory equipment and observation software. It can not only satisfy multiple observation mode requirement, but also save cost.

Ultrafast Isomerization in Acetylene Dication: To Be or Not To Be

Experimental evidence has pointed toward the existence of ultrafast proton migration and isomerization as a key process for acetylene and its ions, however the actual mechanism for ultrafast isomerization of the acetylene [HCCH]2+ to vinylidene [H2CC]2+ dication remains nebulous. Theoretical studies show a high potential barrier of over 2eV for the isomerization pathways on the low lying dicationic states, implying that the corresponding isomerization should take picoseconds or even longer according to transition state theory. However a recent experiment at a femtosecond X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) [Nature Commun. 6, 8199 (2015)] suggests that large amplitude hydrogen migration proceeds on a sub-100 femtosecond time scale. In order to resolve the contradiction, we present a complete theoretical study of the dynamics of acetylene dication produced by Auger decay after X-ray photoionization of the carbon atom K shell. We find that isomerization does not occur on the sub-100 fs timescale and is not required to explain the time-resolved Coulomb imaging experiment. This study resolves the seeming contradiction between experiment and theory concerning the isomerization time scale in acetylene dication. This work calls for careful interpretation of structural information from the widely applied Coulomb momentum imaging method but also points out its strengths in mapping out momentum dispersion dynamics even when structural variation is minor.

On Evaluating Commercial Cloud Services: A Systematic Review

Background: Cloud Computing is increasingly booming in industry with many competing providers and services. Accordingly, evaluation of commercial Cloud services is necessary. However, the existing evaluation studies are relatively chaotic. There exists tremendous confusion and gap between practices and theory about Cloud services evaluation. Aim: To facilitate relieving the aforementioned chaos, this work aims to synthesize the existing evaluation implementations to outline the state-of-the-practice and also identify research opportunities in Cloud services evaluation. Method: Based on a conceptual evaluation model comprising six steps, the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method was employed to collect relevant evidence to investigate the Cloud services evaluation step by step. Results: This SLR identified 82 relevant evaluation studies. The overall data collected from these studies essentially represent the current practical landscape of implementing Cloud services evaluation, and in turn can be reused to facilitate future evaluation work. Conclusions: Evaluation of commercial Cloud services has become a world-wide research topic. Some of the findings of this SLR identify several research gaps in the area of Cloud services evaluation (e.g., the Elasticity and Security evaluation of commercial Cloud services could be a long-term challenge), while some other findings suggest the trend of applying commercial Cloud services (e.g., compared with PaaS, IaaS seems more suitable for customers and is particularly important in industry). This SLR study itself also confirms some previous experiences and reveals new Evidence-Based Software Engineering (EBSE) lessons.

Spot Pricing in the Cloud Ecosystem: A Comparative Investigation

Background: Spot pricing is considered as a significant supplement for building a full-fledged market economy for the Cloud ecosystem. However, it seems that both providers and consumers are still hesitating to enter the Cloud spot market. The relevant academic community also has conflicting opinions about Cloud spot pricing in terms of revenue generation. Aim: This work aims to systematically identify, assess, synthesize and report the published evidence in favor of or against spot-price scheme compared with fixed-price scheme of Cloud computing, so as to help relieve the aforementioned conflict. Method: We employed the systematic literature review (SLR) method to collect and investigate the empirical studies of Cloud spot pricing indexed by major electronic libraries. Results: This SLR identified 61 primary studies that either delivered discussions or conducted experiments to perform comparison between spot pricing and fixed pricing in the Cloud domain. The reported benefits and limitations were summarized to facilitate cost-benefit analysis of being a Cloud spot pricing player, while four types of theories were distinguished to help both researchers and practitioners better understand the Cloud spot market. Conclusions: This SLR shows that the academic community strongly advocates the emerging Cloud spot market. Although there is still a lack of practical and easily deployable market-driven mechanisms, the overall findings of our work indicate that spot pricing plays a promising role in the sustainability of Cloud resource exploitation.

Boosting Metrics for Cloud Services Evaluation -- The Last Mile of Using Benchmark Suites

Benchmark suites are significant for evaluating various aspects of Cloud services from a holistic view. However, there is still a gap between using benchmark suites and achieving holistic impression of the evaluated Cloud services. Most Cloud service evaluation work intended to report individual benchmarking results without delivering summary measures. As a result, it could be still hard for customers with such evaluation reports to understand an evaluated Cloud service from a global perspective. Inspired by the boosting approaches to machine learning, we proposed the concept Boosting Metrics to represent all the potential approaches that are able to integrate a suite of benchmarking results. This paper introduces two types of preliminary boosting metrics, and demonstrates how the boosting metrics can be used to supplement primary measures of individual Cloud service features. In particular, boosting metrics can play a summary Response role in applying experimental design to Cloud services evaluation. Although the concept Boosting Metrics was refined based on our work in the Cloud Computing domain, we believe it can be easily adapted to the evaluation work of other computing paradigms.

Performance Overhead Comparison between Hypervisor and Container based Virtualization

The current virtualization solution in the Cloud widely relies on hypervisor-based technologies. Along with the recent popularity of Docker, the container-based virtualization starts receiving more attention for being a promising alternative. Since both of the virtualization solutions are not resource-free, their performance overheads would lead to negative impacts on the quality of Cloud services. To help fundamentally understand the performance difference between these two types of virtualization solutions, we use a physical machine with "just-enough" resource as a baseline to investigate the performance overhead of a standalone Docker container against a standalone virtual machine (VM). With findings contrary to the related work, our evaluation results show that the virtualization's performance overhead could vary not only on a feature-by-feature basis but also on a job-to-job basis. Although the container-based solution is undoubtedly lightweight, the hypervisor-based technology does not come with higher performance overhead in every case. For example, Docker containers particularly exhibit lower QoS in terms of storage transaction speed.

On a Feedback Control-based Mechanism of Bidding for Cloud Spot Service

As a cost-effective option for Cloud consumers, spot service has been considered to be a significant supplement for building a full-fledged market economy for the Cloud ecosystem. However, unlike the static and straightforward way of trading on-demand and reserved Cloud services, the market-driven regulations of employing spot service could be too complicated for Cloud consumers to comprehensively understand. In particular, it would be both difficult and tedious for potential consumers to determine suitable bids from time to time. To reduce the complexity in applying spot resources, we propose to use a feedback control to help make bidding decisions. Based on an arccotangent-function-type system model, our novel bidding mechanism imitates fuzzy and intuitive human activities to refine and issue new bids according to previous errors. The validation is conducted by using Amazon's historical spot price trace to perform a set of simulations and comparisons. The result shows that the feedback control-based mechanism obtains a better trade-off between bidding rationality and success rate than the other five comparable strategies. Although this mechanism is only for black-box bidding (price prediction) at this current stage, it can be conveniently and gradually upgraded to take into account external constraints in the future.

Object-Oriented Sokoban Solver: A Serious Game Project for OOAD and AI Education

Serious games are beneficial for education in various computer science areas. Numerous works have reported the experiences of using games (not only playing but also development) in teaching and learning. Considering it could be difficult for teachers/students to prepare/develop a game from scratch during one semester, assistant educational materials would be crucial in the corresponding courses. Unfortunately, the literature shows that not many materials from educational game projects are shared. To help different educators identify suitable courseware and help students implement game development, it is worth further investigating and accumulating the educational resources from individual game projects. Following such an idea, this paper proposes a game development project of an object-oriented Sokoban solver, and exposes relevant educational materials. The documented system design can be viewed as a ready-to-use resource for education in object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD), while the Sokoban solver itself may be used as an assignment platform for teaching artificial intelligence (AI). Further documentation, platform, and APIs will be realized and shared in the future to facilitate others' educational activities. Overall, this work is supposed to inspire and encourage other researchers and educators to post available materials of more game projects for the purpose of sharing and reuse.

DoKnowMe: Towards a Domain Knowledge-driven Methodology for Performance Evaluation

Software engineering considers performance evaluation to be one of the key portions of software quality assurance. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lack of standard methodologies for performance evaluation even in the scope of experimental computer science. Inspired by the concept of "instantiation" in object-oriented programming, we distinguish the generic performance evaluation logic from the distributed and ad-hoc relevant studies, and develop an abstract evaluation methodology (by analogy of "class") we name Domain Knowledge-driven Methodology (DoKnowMe). By replacing five predefined domain-specific knowledge artefacts, DoKnowMe could be instantiated into specific methodologies (by analogy of "object") to guide evaluators in performance evaluation of different software and even computing systems. We also propose a generic validation framework with four indicators (i.e.~usefulness, feasibility, effectiveness and repeatability), and use it to validate DoKnowMe in the Cloud services evaluation domain. Given the positive and promising validation result, we plan to integrate more common evaluation strategies to improve DoKnowMe and further focus on the performance evaluation of Cloud autoscaler systems.
