Structural Properties of Plastically Deformed SrTiO3 and KTaO3

Dislocation engineering has the potential to open new avenues toward the exploration and modification of the properties of quantum materials. Strontium titanate (SrTiO3, STO) and potassium tantalate (KTaO3, KTO) are incipient ferroelectrics that show metallization and superconductivity at extremely low charge carrier concentrations, and have been the subject of resurgent interest. These materials also exhibit remarkable ambient-temperature ductility, and thus represent exceptional platforms for studies of the effects of deformation-induced dislocation structures on electronic properties. Recent work on plastically deformed STO revealed an enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature and the emergence of local ferroelectricity and magnetism near self-organized dislocation walls. Here we present a comprehensive structural analysis of plastically deformed STO and KTO, employing specially designed strain cells, diffuse neutron and x-ray scattering, Raman scattering, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Diffuse scattering and NMR provide insight into the dislocation configurations and densities and their dependence on strain. As in the prior work on STO, Raman scattering reveals evidence for local ferroelectric order near dislocation walls in plastically deformed KTO. Our findings provide valuable information about the self-organized defect structures in both materials, and they position KTO as a second model system with which to explore the associated emergent physics.

Neural Gaffer: Relighting Any Object via Diffusion

Single-image relighting is a challenging task that involves reasoning about the complex interplay between geometry, materials, and lighting. Many prior methods either support only specific categories of images, such as portraits, or require special capture conditions, like using a flashlight. Alternatively, some methods explicitly decompose a scene into intrinsic components, such as normals and BRDFs, which can be inaccurate or under-expressive. In this work, we propose a novel end-to-end 2D relighting diffusion model, called Neural Gaffer, that takes a single image of any object and can synthesize an accurate, high-quality relit image under any novel environmental lighting condition, simply by conditioning an image generator on a target environment map, without an explicit scene decomposition. Our method builds on a pre-trained diffusion model, and fine-tunes it on a synthetic relighting dataset, revealing and harnessing the inherent understanding of lighting present in the diffusion model. We evaluate our model on both synthetic and in-the-wild Internet imagery and demonstrate its advantages in terms of generalization and accuracy. Moreover, by combining with other generative methods, our model enables many downstream 2D tasks, such as text-based relighting and object insertion. Our model can also operate as a strong relighting prior for 3D tasks, such as relighting a radiance field.

Investigating the intracluster medium viscosity using the tails of GASP jellyfish galaxies

The microphysics of the intracluster medium (ICM) in galaxy clusters is still poorly understood. Observational evidence suggests that the effective viscosity is suppressed by plasma instabilities that reduce the mean free path of particles. Measuring the effective viscosity of the ICM is crucial to understanding the processes that govern its physics on small scales. The trails of ionized interstellar medium left behind by the so-called jellyfish galaxies can trace the turbulent motions of the surrounding ICM and constrain its local viscosity. We present the results of a systematic analysis of the velocity structure function (VSF) of the H$α$ line for ten galaxies from the GASP sample. The VSFs show a sub-linear power law scaling below 10 kpc which may result from turbulent cascading and extends to 1 kpc, below the supposed ICM dissipation scales of tens of kpc expected in a fluid described by Coulomb collisions. Our result constrains the local ICM viscosity to be 0.3-25$\%$ of the expected Spitzer value. Our findings demonstrate that either the ICM particles have a smaller mean free path than expected in a regime defined by Coulomb collisions, or that we are probing effects due to collisionless physics in the ICM turbulence.

Spatio-temporal cooperative control Method of Highway Ramp Merge Based on Vehicle-road Coordination

The merging area of highway ramps faces multiple challenges, including traffic congestion, collision risks, speed mismatches, driver behavior uncertainties, limited visibility, and bottleneck effects. However, autonomous vehicles engaging in depth coordination between vehicle and road in merging zones, by pre-planning and uploading travel trajectories, can significantly enhance the safety and efficiency of merging zones. In this paper,we mainly introduce mainline priority cooperation method to achieve the time and space cooperative control of highway merge.Vehicle-mounted intelligent units share real-time vehicle status and driving intentions with Road Section Management Units, which pre-plan the spatiotemporal trajectories of vehicle travel. After receiving these trajectories, Vehicle Intelligent Units strictly adhere to them. Through this deep collaboration between vehicles and roads, conflicts in time and space during vehicle travel are eliminated in advance.

Partial Orders in Rate-Matched Polar Codes

In this paper, we establish the partial order (POs) for both the binary erasure channel (BEC) and the binary memoryless symmetric channel (BMSC) under any block rate-matched polar codes. Firstly, we define the POs in the sense of rate-matched polar codes as a sequential block version. Furthermore, we demonstrate the persistence of POs after block rate matching in the BEC. Finally, leveraging the existing POs in the BEC, we obtain more POs in the BMSC under block rate matching. Simulations show that the PW sequence constructed from β-expansion can be improved by the tool of POs. Actually, any fixed reliable sequence in the mother polar codes can be improved by POs for rate matching.

VLMimic: Vision Language Models are Visual Imitation Learner for Fine-grained Actions

Visual imitation learning (VIL) provides an efficient and intuitive strategy for robotic systems to acquire novel skills. Recent advancements in Vision Language Models (VLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance in vision and language reasoning capabilities for VIL tasks. Despite the progress, current VIL methods naively employ VLMs to learn high-level plans from human videos, relying on pre-defined motion primitives for executing physical interactions, which remains a major bottleneck. In this work, we present VLMimic, a novel paradigm that harnesses VLMs to directly learn even fine-grained action levels, only given a limited number of human videos. Specifically, VLMimic first grounds object-centric movements from human videos, and learns skills using hierarchical constraint representations, facilitating the derivation of skills with fine-grained action levels from limited human videos. These skills are refined and updated through an iterative comparison strategy, enabling efficient adaptation to unseen environments. Our extensive experiments exhibit that our VLMimic, using only 5 human videos, yields significant improvements of over 27% and 21% in RLBench and real-world manipulation tasks, and surpasses baselines by over 37% in long-horizon tasks.

Coded Water-Filling for Multi-User Interference Cancellation

In this paper, we study the system-level advantages provided by rateless coding, early termination and power allocation strategy for multiple users distributed across multiple cells. In a multi-cell scenario, the early termination of coded transmission not only reduces finite-length loss akin to the single-user scenario but also yields capacity enhancements due to the cancellation of interference across cells. We term this technique \emph{coded water-filling}, a concept that diverges from traditional water-filling by incorporating variable-length rateless coding and interference cancellation. We formulate a series of analytical models to quantify the gains associated with coded water-filling in multi-user scenarios. First, we analyze the capacity gains from interference cancellation in Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels, which arises from the disparity in the number of bits transmitted by distinct users. Building upon this, we broaden our analysis to encompass fading channels to show the robustness of the interference cancellation algorithms. Finally, we address the power allocation problem analogous to the water-filling problem under a multi-user framework, proving that an elevation in the water-filling threshold facilitates overall system capacity enhancement. Our analysis reveals the capacity gains achievable through early termination and power allocation techniques in multi-user settings. These results show that coded water-filling is instrumental for further improving spectral efficiency in crowded spectrums.

Design and Experimental Application of a Radon Diffusion Chamber for Determining Diffusion Coefficients in Membrane Materials

In recent years, the issue of radon emanation and diffusion has become a critical concern for rare decay experiments, such as JUNO and PandaX-4T. This paper introduces a detector design featuring a symmetric radon detector cavity for the quantitative assessment of membrane materials' radon blocking capabilities. The performance of this design is evaluated through the application of Fick's Law and the diffusion equation considering material solubility. Our detector has completed measurements of radon diffusion coefficients for four types of membrane materials currently used in experiments, which also confirms the rationality of this detector design. The findings are instrumental in guiding the selection and evaluation of optimal materials for radon shielding to reduce radon background, contributing to boost sensitivities of rare event research.

A Robust Multisource Remote Sensing Image Matching Method Utilizing Attention and Feature Enhancement Against Noise Interference

Image matching is a fundamental and critical task of multisource remote sensing image applications. However, remote sensing images are susceptible to various noises. Accordingly, how to effectively achieve accurate matching in noise images is a challenging problem. To solve this issue, we propose a robust multisource remote sensing image matching method utilizing attention and feature enhancement against noise interference. In the first stage, we combine deep convolution with the attention mechanism of transformer to perform dense feature extraction, constructing feature descriptors with higher discriminability and robustness. Subsequently, we employ a coarse-to-fine matching strategy to achieve dense matches. In the second stage, we introduce an outlier removal network based on a binary classification mechanism, which can establish effective and geometrically consistent correspondences between images; through weighting for each correspondence, inliers vs. outliers classification are performed, as well as removing outliers from dense matches. Ultimately, we can accomplish more efficient and accurate matches. To validate the performance of the proposed method, we conduct experiments using multisource remote sensing image datasets for comparison with other state-of-the-art methods under different scenarios, including noise-free, additive random noise, and periodic stripe noise. Comparative results indicate that the proposed method has a more well-balanced performance and robustness. The proposed method contributes a valuable reference for solving the difficult problem of noise image matching.

TrustLLM: Trustworthiness in Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs), exemplified by ChatGPT, have gained considerable attention for their excellent natural language processing capabilities. Nonetheless, these LLMs present many challenges, particularly in the realm of trustworthiness. Therefore, ensuring the trustworthiness of LLMs emerges as an important topic. This paper introduces TrustLLM, a comprehensive study of trustworthiness in LLMs, including principles for different dimensions of trustworthiness, established benchmark, evaluation, and analysis of trustworthiness for mainstream LLMs, and discussion of open challenges and future directions. Specifically, we first propose a set of principles for trustworthy LLMs that span eight different dimensions. Based on these principles, we further establish a benchmark across six dimensions including truthfulness, safety, fairness, robustness, privacy, and machine ethics. We then present a study evaluating 16 mainstream LLMs in TrustLLM, consisting of over 30 datasets. Our findings firstly show that in general trustworthiness and utility (i.e., functional effectiveness) are positively related. Secondly, our observations reveal that proprietary LLMs generally outperform most open-source counterparts in terms of trustworthiness, raising concerns about the potential risks of widely accessible open-source LLMs. However, a few open-source LLMs come very close to proprietary ones. Thirdly, it is important to note that some LLMs may be overly calibrated towards exhibiting trustworthiness, to the extent that they compromise their utility by mistakenly treating benign prompts as harmful and consequently not responding. Finally, we emphasize the importance of ensuring transparency not only in the models themselves but also in the technologies that underpin trustworthiness. Knowing the specific trustworthy technologies that have been employed is crucial for analyzing their effectiveness.

Nonlinear PDE Constrained Optimal Dispatch of Gas and Power: A Global Linearization Approach

The coordinated dispatch of power and gas in the electricity-gas integrated energy system (EG-IES) is fundamental for ensuring operational security. However, the gas dynamics in the natural gas system (NGS) are governed by the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE), making the dispatch problem of the EG-IES a complicated optimization model constrained by nonlinear PDE. To address it, we propose a globally linearized gas network model based on the Koopman operator theory, avoiding the commonly used local linearization and spatial discretization. Particularly, we propose a data-driven Koopman operator approximation approach for the globally linearized gas network model based on the extended dynamic mode decomposition, in which a physics-informed stability constraint is derived and embedded to improve the generalization ability and accuracy of the model. Based on this, we develop an optimal dispatch model for the EG-IES that first considers the nonlinear gas dynamics in the NGS. The case study verifies the effectiveness of this work. Simulation results reveal that the commonly used locally linearized gas network model fails to accurately capture the dynamic characteristics of NGS, bringing potential security threats to the system.

$L^{2}$-Sobolev space bijectivity and existence of global solutions for the matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We consider the Cauchy problem to the general defocusing and focusing $p\times q$ matrix nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations with initial data allowing arbitrary-order poles and spectral singularities. By establishing the $L^{2}$-Sobolev space bijectivity of the direct and inverse scattering transforms associated with a $(p+q)\times(p+q)$ matrix spectral problem, we prove that both defocusing and focusing matrix NLS equations are globally well-posed in the weighted Sobolev space $H^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$.

Depth-guided Texture Diffusion for Image Semantic Segmentation

Depth information provides valuable insights into the 3D structure especially the outline of objects, which can be utilized to improve the semantic segmentation tasks. However, a naive fusion of depth information can disrupt feature and compromise accuracy due to the modality gap between the depth and the vision. In this work, we introduce a Depth-guided Texture Diffusion approach that effectively tackles the outlined challenge. Our method extracts low-level features from edges and textures to create a texture image. This image is then selectively diffused across the depth map, enhancing structural information vital for precisely extracting object outlines. By integrating this enriched depth map with the original RGB image into a joint feature embedding, our method effectively bridges the disparity between the depth map and the image, enabling more accurate semantic segmentation. We conduct comprehensive experiments across diverse, commonly-used datasets spanning a wide range of semantic segmentation tasks, including Camouflaged Object Detection (COD), Salient Object Detection (SOD), and indoor semantic segmentation. With source-free estimated depth or depth captured by depth cameras, our method consistently outperforms existing baselines and achieves new state-of-theart results, demonstrating the effectiveness of our Depth-guided Texture Diffusion for image semantic segmentation.

Evidence for hybrid gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant G150.3+4.5

The supernova remnant (SNR) G150.3+4.5 was first identified in radio, exhibiting a hard GeV spectrum and a $\sim 1.5^\circ$ radius. Radio observations revealed a bright arc with an index of $\sim -0.40$, which stands in contrast to the index of $\sim -0.69$ for the rest. This arc is coincident with the point-like \emph{Fermi} source 4FGL J0426.5+5434 and KM2A source 1LHAASO J0428+5531. The rest of the SNR has a hard GeV spectrum and a soft TeV spectrum, implying a spectral cut-off or break near 1 TeV. Since there is no X-ray counterpart and no pulse signal detected, the gamma-ray $(γ$-ray) emission mechanism from the SNR and the point-like source appear puzzling. In this work, we reanalyse the $γ$-ray emission using 14 yr data recorded by \emph{Fermi} Large Area Telescope and find that the spectrum of the northern half-sphere is compatible with a broken power law with a break at 146 $\pm$ 11 GeV and photon indices of $Γ_{\rm{Northlobe}}$ =$1.54\pm0.04_{\rm{stat}}\pm0.07_{\rm{syst}}$ ($2.28\pm0.08_{\rm{stat}}\pm0.12_{\rm{syst}}$) below (above) the break. In addition, the southern half-sphere can be described well with a single power law with $Γ_{\rm{Southlobe}}$ =$1.95\pm0.07_{\rm{stat}}\pm0.09_{\rm{syst}}$. Since the southern half-sphere is well correlated with CO emission, we propose that the $γ$-ray emission of the northern half-sphere could be dominated by relativistic electrons via inverse-Compton processes, while the southern half-sphere is dominated by cosmic rays via hadronic processes. 4FGL J0426.5+5434 may result from the illumination of a cloud by escaping cosmic rays or recent shock-cloud interaction. Observations from LHAASO-KM2A thus favour the possibility of a cosmic-ray PeVatron candidate, however, leptonic scenarios cannot be ruled out. Further multi-wavelength observations are warranted to confirm the hadronic nature of 1LHAASO J4028+5531.

Correspondence-Guided SfM-Free 3D Gaussian Splatting for NVS

Novel View Synthesis (NVS) without Structure-from-Motion (SfM) pre-processed camera poses--referred to as SfM-free methods--is crucial for promoting rapid response capabilities and enhancing robustness against variable operating conditions. Recent SfM-free methods have integrated pose optimization, designing end-to-end frameworks for joint camera pose estimation and NVS. However, most existing works rely on per-pixel image loss functions, such as L2 loss. In SfM-free methods, inaccurate initial poses lead to misalignment issue, which, under the constraints of per-pixel image loss functions, results in excessive gradients, causing unstable optimization and poor convergence for NVS. In this study, we propose a correspondence-guided SfM-free 3D Gaussian splatting for NVS. We use correspondences between the target and the rendered result to achieve better pixel alignment, facilitating the optimization of relative poses between frames. We then apply the learned poses to optimize the entire scene. Each 2D screen-space pixel is associated with its corresponding 3D Gaussians through approximated surface rendering to facilitate gradient back propagation. Experimental results underline the superior performance and time efficiency of the proposed approach compared to the state-of-the-art baselines.

Symmetry of positive solutions to biharmonic Lane-Emden equation with singular set

In this paper, we are devoted to studying the positive weak, punctured or distributional solutions to the biharmonic Lane-Emden equation \begin{equation*} Δ^{2} u=u^{p} \quad \quad \text{in} \ \mathbb{R}^{N}\setminus Z, \end{equation*} where $N\geq5$, $1<p\leq\frac{N+4}{N-4}$, and the singular set $Z$ represents a closed and proper subset of $ \left\lbrace x_{1}=0\right\rbrace $. The symmetry and monotonicity properties of the singular solutions will be given by taking advantage of the moving plane method and the approach of moving spheres.
