Evolution of London penetration depth with scattering in single crystals of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$

London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured in single crystals of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$, $x$=0 and 0.07, down to temperatures of 50~mK, $\sim T_c/50$. Isovalent substitution of Na for K significantly increases impurity scattering, with $ρ(T_c)$ rising from 0.2 to 2.2 $μΩ$cm, and leads to a suppression of $T_c$ from 3.5~K to 2.8~K. At the same time, a close to $T$-linear $Δλ(T)$ in pure samples changes to almost $T^2$ in the substituted samples. The behavior never becomes exponential as expected for the accidental nodes, as opposed to $T^2$ dependence in superconductors with symmetry imposed line nodes. The superfluid density in the full temperature range follows a simple clean and dirty $d$-wave dependence, for pure and substituted samples, respectively. This result contradicts suggestions of multi-band scenarios with strongly different gap structure on four sheets of the Fermi surface.

Magnetic excitations and anomalous spin wave broadening in multiferroic FeV2O4

We report on the different roles of two orbital-active Fe$^{2+}$ at the A site and V$^{3+}$ at the B site in the magnetic excitations and on the anomalous spin wave broadening in FeV$_{2}$O$_{4}$. FeV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ exhibits three structural transitions and successive paramagnetic (PM)-collinear ferrimagnetic (CFI)-noncollinear ferrimagnetic (NCFI) transitions. The high-temperature tetragonal/PM -orthorhombic/CFI transition is accompanied by the appearance of an energy gap with a high magnitude in the magnetic excitations due to strong spin-orbit coupling induced anisotropy at the Fe$^{2+}$ site. While there is no measurable increase in the energy gap from the orbital ordering of V$^{3+}$ at the orthorhombic/CFI-tetragonal/NCFI transition, anomalous spin wave broadening is observed in the orthorhombic/CFI state due to V$^{3+}$ spin fluctuations at the B site. The spin wave broadening is also observed at the zone boundary without softening, which is discussed in terms of magnon-phonon coupling.

Image Representation Learning Using Graph Regularized Auto-Encoders

We consider the problem of image representation for the tasks of unsupervised learning and semi-supervised learning. In those learning tasks, the raw image vectors may not provide enough representation for their intrinsic structures due to their highly dense feature space. To overcome this problem, the raw image vectors should be mapped to a proper representation space which can capture the latent structure of the original data and represent the data explicitly for further learning tasks such as clustering. Inspired by the recent research works on deep neural network and representation learning, in this paper, we introduce the multiple-layer auto-encoder into image representation, we also apply the locally invariant ideal to our image representation with auto-encoders and propose a novel method, called Graph regularized Auto-Encoder (GAE). GAE can provide a compact representation which uncovers the hidden semantics and simultaneously respects the intrinsic geometric structure. Extensive experiments on image clustering show encouraging results of the proposed algorithm in comparison to the state-of-the-art algorithms on real-word cases.

Upper critical field of isoelectron substituted SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ of optimally doped iron-based superconductor SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ ($x$ = 0.35, $T_c$ = 25 K) was measured as a function of temperature down to 1.6 K for two principal directions of magnetic field $H \parallel c$ and $H \parallel a$. Measurements were performed in pulsed magnetic fields up to 65 T using a tunnel-diode resonator technique on as-grown and heavy-ion irradiated single crystals, with columnar defect density corresponding to a matching field $Bϕ$ = 25 T. The $H_{c2,c}(T)$ is close to $T$-linear, while clear saturation is observed for $H_{c2,a}(T)$, leading to a strongly temperature dependent anisotropy parameter $γ$. The linear shape of $H_{c2,c}(T)$ is very similar to that observed in nodal KFe$_2$As$_2$ but very different from full-gap LiFeAs. Irradiation does not introduce any additional features on $H_{c2}(T)$ line corresponding to the matching field. Instead, it suppresses uniformly both $T_c$ and $H_{c2}$, keeping their ratio constant.

Hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature of KFe2As2 single crystals

We present heat capacity, c-axis thermal expansion and pressure dependent, low field, temperature dependent magnetization for pressures up to ~ 12 kbar, data for KFe2As2 single crystals. Tc decreases under pressure with dTc/dP ~ -0.10 K/kbar. The inferred uniaxial, c-axis, pressure derivative is positive, dTc/dpc ~ 0.11 K/kbar. The data are analyzed in comparison with those for overdoped Fe-based superconductors. Arguments are presented that superconductivity in KFe2As2 may be different from the other overdoped, Fe-based materials in the 122 family.

On the eigenfunctions of the complex Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators

Starting from the 1-dimensional complex-valued Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, we present two natural ways to imply the associated eigenfunctions of the 2-dimensional normal Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators in the complex Hilbert space $L_{\Cnum}^2(μ)$. We call the eigenfunctions Hermite-Laguerre-Ito polynomials. In addition, the Mehler summation formula for the complex process are shown.

The space of 4-ended solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation on the plane

An entire solution of the Allen-Cahn equation $Δu=F'(u)$, where $F$ is an even, bistable function, is called a $2k$-end solution if its nodal set is asymptotic to $2k$ half lines, and if along each of these half lines the function $u$ looks like the one dimensional, heteroclinic solution. In this paper we initiate a program to classify the four-end solutions of the Allen-Cahn equation in $\R^2$. We show that there exists a one parameter family of solutions containing the saddle solution, for which the angle between the nodal lines is $\fracπ{2}$, as well as solutions for which the angle between the asymptotic half lines is any $θ\in (0, \fracπ{2})$. This justifies the definition of the angle map for a four-end solution $u$, which is the angle $θ=θ(u)\in (0, \fracπ{2})$ between the asymptote to the nodal line in the first quadrant and the x axis. Then we show that on any connected component in the moduli space of four-end solutions the angle map is surjective onto $(0,\fracπ{2})$.

The classification of four end solutions of the Allen-Cahn equation on the plane

An entire solution of the Allen-Cahn equation $Δu=f(u)$, where $f$ has exactly three zeros at $\pm 1$ and 0, is balanced and odd, e.g. $f(u)=u(u^2-1)$, is called a $2k$-ended solution if its nodal set is asymptotic to $2k$ half lines, and if along each of these half lines the function $u$ looks like the one dimensional, heteroclinic solution. In this paper we consider the family of four ended solutions whose ends are almost parallel at $\infty$. We show that this family can be parametrized by the family of solutions of the two component Toda system. As a result we obtain the uniqueness of four ended solutions with almost parallel ends. Combining this result with the classification of connected components in the moduli space of the four ended solutions we can classify all such solutions. Thus we show that four end solutions form, up to rigid motions, a one parameter family. This family contains the saddle solution, for which the angle between the nodal lines is $\fracπ{2}$ as well as solutions for which the angle between the asymptotic half lines of the nodal set is arbitrary small (almost parallel nodal sets).

Laser spot position dependent photothermal mode cooling of a micro-cantilever

We explore the laser spot position (LSP) dependent photothermal mode cooling of a micro-cantilever in a Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity. Depending on the LSP along the lever, photothermal coupling to the first two mechanical modes can be either parallel or anti-parallel. This LSP dependent behavior is analyzed theoretically by a simple model, which is in quantitatively agreement with our experimental observation. From simulation, the parallel and anti-parallel coupling region is identified along the lever. We conclude that a more efficient mode cooling may be achieved in the parallel coupling region.

Evidence of a universal and isotropic 2Δ/kBTC ratio in 122-type iron pnictide superconductors over a wide doping range

We have systematically investigated the doping and the directional dependence of the gap structure in the 122-type iron pnictide superconductors by point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. The studies were performed on single crystals of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0.29, 0.49, and 0.77) and SrFe1.74Co0.26As2 with a sharp tip of Pb or Au pressed along the c-axis or the ab-plane direction. The conductance spectra obtained on highly transparent contacts clearly show evidence of a robust superconducting gap. The normalized curves can be well described by the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model with a lifetime broadening. The determined gap value scales very well with the transition temperature, giving the 2Δ/kBTC value of ~ 3.1. The results suggest the presence of a universal coupling behavior in this class of iron pnictides over a broad doping range and independent of the sign of the doping. Moreover, conductance spectra obtained on c-axis junctions and ab-plane junctions indicate that the observed gap is isotropic in these superconductors.

Ant Colony Algorithm for the Weighted Item Layout Optimization Problem

This paper discusses the problem of placing weighted items in a circular container in two-dimensional space. This problem is of great practical significance in various mechanical engineering domains, such as the design of communication satellites. Two constructive heuristics are proposed, one for packing circular items and the other for packing rectangular items. These work by first optimizing object placement order, and then optimizing object positioning. Based on these heuristics, an ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm is described to search first for optimal positioning order, and then for the optimal layout. We describe the results of numerical experiments, in which we test two versions of our ACO algorithm alongside local search methods previously described in the literature. Our results show that the constructive heuristic-based ACO performs better than existing methods on larger problem instances.

A Note on Gradually Varied Functions and Harmonic Functions

Any constructive continuous function must have a gradually varied approximation in compact space. However, the refinement of domain for $σ-$-net might be very small. Keeping the original discretization (square or triangulation), can we get some interesting properties related to gradual variation? In this note, we try to prove that many harmonic functions are gradually varied or near gradually varied; this means that the value of the center point differs from that of its neighbor at most by 2. It is obvious that most of the gradually varied functions are not harmonic. This note discusses some of the basic harmonic functions in relation to gradually varied functions.

Josephson effect between electron-doped and hole-doped iron pnictide single crystals

We have observed the Josephson effect in junctions formed between single crystals of SrFe1.74Co0.26As2 and Ba0.23K0.77Fe2As2. I-V curves showed resistively-shunted junction characteristics, and the ac Josephson effect was observed under microwave irradiation. By applying an in-plane magnetic field, the critical current is completely modulated and shows a relatively symmetric diffraction pattern, consistent with the intermediate junction limit. The observation of the Josephson effect in the p-n bicrystal structure not only has significant implications for designing phase-sensitive junctions to probe the pairing symmetry of iron pnictide superconductors, but also represents an important step in developing all iron pnictide devices for applications.

The Maximum Wiener Index of Trees with Given Degree Sequences

The Wiener index of a connected graph is the sum of topological distances between all pairs of vertices. Since Wang gave a mistake result on the maximum Wiener index for given tree degree sequence, in this paper, we investigate the maximum Wiener index of trees with given degree sequences and extremal trees which attain the maximum value.

Observation of the Josephson effect in Pb/(Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystal junctions

We have fabricated c-axis Josephson junctions on single crystals of (Ba,K)Fe2As2 by using Pb as the counter electrode in two geometries, planar and point contact. Junctions in both geometries show resistively shunted junction I-V curves below the Tc of the counter electrode. Microwave induced steps were observed in the I-V curves, and the critical currents are suppressed with an in-plane magnetic field in a manner consistent with the small junction limit. ICRN products of up to 0.3 mV have been observed in these junctions at 4.2 K. The observation of Josephson coupling along the c-axis between (Ba,K)Fe2As2 and a conventional superconductor suggests the existence of a s-wave superconducting order parameter in this class of iron pnictide superconductors.

Embedding Data within Knowledge Spaces

The promise of e-Science will only be realized when data is discoverable, accessible, and comprehensible within distributed teams, across disciplines, and over the long-term--without reliance on out-of-band (non-digital) means. We have developed the open-source Tupelo semantic content management framework and are employing it to manage a wide range of e-Science entities (including data, documents, workflows, people, and projects) and a broad range of metadata (including provenance, social networks, geospatial relationships, temporal relations, and domain descriptions). Tupelo couples the use of global identifiers and resource description framework (RDF) statements with an aggregatable content repository model to provide a unified space for securely managing distributed heterogeneous content and relationships.

Evidence for Coexistence of Superconductivity and Magnetism in Single Crystals of Co-doped SrFe$_2$As$_2$

In order to investigate whether magnetism and superconductivity coexist in Co-doped SrFe$_2$As$_2$, we have prepared single crystals of SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$, $x$ = 0 and 0.4, and characterized them via X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity in zero and applied field up to 9 T as well as at ambient and applied pressure up to 1.6 GPa, and magnetic susceptibility. At $x$ = 0.4, there is both magnetic and resistive evidence for a spin density wave transition at 120 K, while $T_c$ = 19.5 K - indicating coexistent magnetism and superconductivity. A discussion of how these results compare with reported results, both in SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ and in other doped 122 compounds, is given.

Current-voltage characteristics of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 and NdFeAsO0.85 superconductors

The vortex phase diagrams of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 and NdFeAsO0.85 superconductors are determined from the analysis of resistivity and current-voltage (I-V) measurements in magnetic fields up to 9 T. A clear vortex glass to liquid transition is identified only in the oxygen deficient NdFeAsO0.85, in which I-V curves can be well scaled onto liquid and glass branches consistent with the vortex glass theory. With increasing magnetic field, the activation energy U0, deduced from the Arrhenius plots of resistivity based on the thermally activated flux-flow model (TAFF), decays more quickly for NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 than for NdFeAsO0.85. Moreover, the irreversibility field Hirr of NdFeAsO0.85 increases more rapidly than that of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 with decreasing temperature. These observations evidence the strong vortex pinning effects, presumably caused by the enhanced defects and disorders in the oxygen deficient NdFeAsO0.85. It is inferred that the enhanced defects and disorder can be also responsible for the vortex glass to liquid transition in the NdFeAsO0.85.
