Robust Object Tracking with a Hierarchical Ensemble Framework

Autonomous robots enjoy a wide popularity nowadays and have been applied in many applications, such as home security, entertainment, delivery, navigation and guidance. It is vital to robots to track objects accurately in these applications, so it is necessary to focus on tracking algorithms to improve the robustness and accuracy. In this paper, we propose a robust object tracking algorithm based on a hierarchical ensemble framework which can incorporate information including individual pixel features, local patches and holistic target models. The framework combines multiple ensemble models simultaneously instead of using a single ensemble model individually. A discriminative model which accounts for the matching degree of local patches is adopted via a bottom ensemble layer, and a generative model which exploits holistic templates is used to search for the object through the middle ensemble layer as well as an adaptive Kalman filter. We test the proposed tracker on challenging benchmark image sequences. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations demonstrate that the proposed tracker performs superiorly against several state-of-the-art algorithms, especially when the appearance changes dramatically and the occlusions occur.

Global minimizers of the Allen-Cahn equation in dimension $n\geq 8$

We prove the existence of global minimizers of Allen-Cahn equation in dimensions $8$ and above. More precisely, given any strictly area-minimizing Lawson's cones, there are global minimizers whose nodal sets are asymptotic to the cones. As a consequence of Jerison-Monneau's program we establish the existence of many counter-examples to the De Giorgi's conjecture different from the Bombierie-De Giorgi-Giusti minimal graph.

On Helmholtz equation and Dancer's type entire solutions for nonlinear elliptic equations

Starting from a bound state (positive or sign-changing) solution to $$ -Δω_m =|ω_m|^{p-1} ω_m -ω_m \ \ \mbox{in}\ \R^n, \ ω_m \in H^2 (\R^n)$$ and solutions to the Helmholtz equation $$ Δu_0 + λu_0=0 \ \ \mbox{in} \ \R^n, \ λ>0, $$ we build new Dancer's type entire solutions to the nonlinear scalar equation $$ -Δu =|u|^{p-1} u-u \ \ \mbox{in} \ \R^{m+n}. $$

Simple and Efficient Learning using Privileged Information

The Support Vector Machine using Privileged Information (SVM+) has been proposed to train a classifier to utilize the additional privileged information that is only available in the training phase but not available in the test phase. In this work, we propose an efficient solution for SVM+ by simply utilizing the squared hinge loss instead of the hinge loss as in the existing SVM+ formulation, which interestingly leads to a dual form with less variables and in the same form with the dual of the standard SVM. The proposed algorithm is utilized to leverage the additional web knowledge that is only available during training for the image categorization tasks. The extensive experimental results on both Caltech101 andWebQueries datasets show that our proposed method can achieve a factor of up to hundred times speedup with the comparable accuracy when compared with the existing SVM+ method.

Interface Condition for the Darcy Velocity at the Water-oil Flood Front in the Porous Medium

Flood front is the jump interface where fluids distribute discontinuously, whose interface condition is the theoretical basis of a mathematical model of the multiphase flow in porous medium. The conventional interface condition at the jump interface is expressed as the continuous Darcy velocity and fluid pressure (named CVCM ). Our study has inspected this conclusions. First, it is revealed that the principle of mass conservation has no direct relation to the velocity conservation, and the former is not the true foundation of the later, because the former only reflects the kinetic characteristic of the fluid particles at one position(the interface), but not the neighborhood of the interface which required by the later. Then the reasonableness of CVCM is queried from the following three aspects:(1)Using Mukat's two phase seepage equation and the mathematical method of apagoge, we have disproved the continuity of each fluid velocity;(2)Since the analytical solution of the equation of Buckley-Leveret equations is acquirable, its velocity jumps at the flood front presents an appropriate example to disprove the CVCM;(3) The numerical simulation model gives impractical result that flood front would stop moving if CVCM were used to calculate the velocities at the interface between two gridcells. Subsequently, a new one, termed as Jump Velocity Condition Model (JVCM), is deduced from Muskat's two phase seepage equations and Darcy's law without taking account of the capillary force and compressibility of rocks and fluids. Finally, several cases are presented. And the comparisons of the velocity, pressure difference and the front position, which are given by JVCM, CVCM and SPU, have shown that the result of JVCM is the closest to the exact solution.

Learning Optimal Social Dependency for Recommendation

Social recommender systems exploit users' social relationships to improve the recommendation accuracy. Intuitively, a user tends to trust different subsets of her social friends, regarding with different scenarios. Therefore, the main challenge of social recommendation is to exploit the optimal social dependency between users for a specific recommendation task. In this paper, we propose a novel recommendation method, named probabilistic relational matrix factorization (PRMF), which aims to learn the optimal social dependency between users to improve the recommendation accuracy, with or without users' social relationships. Specifically, in PRMF, the latent features of users are assumed to follow a matrix variate normal (MVN) distribution. The positive and negative dependency between users are modeled by the row precision matrix of the MVN distribution. Moreover, we have also proposed an efficient alternating algorithm to solve the optimization problem of PRMF. The experimental results on real datasets demonstrate that the proposed PRMF method outperforms state-of-the-art social recommendation approaches, in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE).

A Design of Scintillator Tiles Read Out by Surface-Mounted SiPMs for a Future Hadron Calorimeter

Precision calorimetry using highly granular sampling calorimeters is being developed based on the particle flow concept within the CALICE collaboration. One design option of a hadron calorimeter is based on silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) to detect photons generated in plastic scintillator tiles. Driven by the need of automated mass assembly of around ten million channels stringently required by the high granularity, we developed a design of scintillator tiles directly coupled with surface-mounted SiPMs. A cavity is created in the center of the bottom surface of each tile to provide enough room for the whole SiPM package and to improve collection of the light produced by incident particles penetrating the tile at different positions. The cavity design has been optimized using a GEANT4-based full simulation model to achieve a high response to a Minimum Ionizing Particles (MIP) and also good spatial uniformity. The single-MIP response for scintillator tiles with an optimized cavity design has been measured using cosmic rays, which shows that a SiPM with a sensitive area of only $\mathbf{1\times1~mm^2}$ (Hamamatsu MPPC S12571-025P) reaches a mean response of more than 23 photon equivalents with a dynamic range of many tens of MIPs. A recent uniformity measurement for the same tile design is performed by scanning the tile area using focused electrons from a $\mathbf{^{90}Sr}$ source, which shows that around 97% (80%) of the tile area is within 90% (95%) response uniformity. This optimized design is well beyond the requirements for a precision hadron calorimeter.

Understand Scene Categories by Objects: A Semantic Regularized Scene Classifier Using Convolutional Neural Networks

Scene classification is a fundamental perception task for environmental understanding in today's robotics. In this paper, we have attempted to exploit the use of popular machine learning technique of deep learning to enhance scene understanding, particularly in robotics applications. As scene images have larger diversity than the iconic object images, it is more challenging for deep learning methods to automatically learn features from scene images with less samples. Inspired by human scene understanding based on object knowledge, we address the problem of scene classification by encouraging deep neural networks to incorporate object-level information. This is implemented with a regularization of semantic segmentation. With only 5 thousand training images, as opposed to 2.5 million images, we show the proposed deep architecture achieves superior scene classification results to the state-of-the-art on a publicly available SUN RGB-D dataset. In addition, performance of semantic segmentation, the regularizer, also reaches a new record with refinement derived from predicted scene labels. Finally, we apply our SUN RGB-D dataset trained model to a mobile robot captured images to classify scenes in our university demonstrating the generalization ability of the proposed algorithm.

Noise Robust IOA/CAS Speech Separation and Recognition System For The Third 'CHIME' Challenge

This paper presents the contribution to the third 'CHiME' speech separation and recognition challenge including both front-end signal processing and back-end speech recognition. In the front-end, Multi-channel Wiener filter (MWF) is designed to achieve background noise reduction. Different from traditional MWF, optimized parameter for the tradeoff between noise reduction and target signal distortion is built according to the desired noise reduction level. In the back-end, several techniques are taken advantage to improve the noisy Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) performance including Deep Neural Network (DNN), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long short-term memory (LSTM) using medium vocabulary, Lattice rescoring with a big vocabulary language model finite state transducer, and ROVER scheme. Experimental results show the proposed system combining front-end and back-end is effective to improve the ASR performance.

Place classification with a graph regularized deep neural network model

Place classification is a fundamental ability that a robot should possess to carry out effective human-robot interactions. It is a nontrivial classification problem which has attracted many research. In recent years, there is a high exploitation of Artificial Intelligent algorithms in robotics applications. Inspired by the recent successes of deep learning methods, we propose an end-to-end learning approach for the place classification problem. With the deep architectures, this methodology automatically discovers features and contributes in general to higher classification accuracies. The pipeline of our approach is composed of three parts. Firstly, we construct multiple layers of laser range data to represent the environment information in different levels of granularity. Secondly, each layer of data is fed into a deep neural network model for classification, where a graph regularization is imposed to the deep architecture for keeping local consistency between adjacent samples. Finally, the predicted labels obtained from all the layers are fused based on confidence trees to maximize the overall confidence. Experimental results validate the effective- ness of our end-to-end place classification framework in which both the multi-layer structure and the graph regularization promote the classification performance. Furthermore, results show that the features automatically learned from the raw input range data can achieve competitive results to the features constructed based on statistical and geometrical information.

Specific Heat Investigation for Line Nodes in Heavily Overdoped Ba1-xKxFe2As2

The pairing symmetry in the iron-based superconductor Ba1-xKxFe2As2 may change from nodeless s-wave near x~0.4 and Tc>30 K, to nodal (either d-wave or s-wave) at x=1 and Tc<4 K. Theoretical interest has been focused on this possibility, where in the transition region both order parameters would be present and time reversal symmetry would be broken. We report specific heat in magnetic fields down to 0.4 K of three single crystals, free of low temperature magnetic anomalies, of heavily overdoped Ba1-xKxFe2As2, x= 0.91, 0.88, and 0.81, Tc(mid) ~ 5.6, 7.2 and 13 K and Hc2 ~ 4.5, 6, and 20 T respectively. The data can be analyzed in a two gap scenario, Delta2/Delta1 ~ 4, with the field dependence of gamma (=C/T as T->0) showing an S-shape vs H, with the suppression of the lower gap by 1 T and gamma ~ H**1/2 overall. Although such a non-linear gamma vs H is consistent with deep minima or nodes in the gap, it is not clear evidence for one, or both, of the gaps being nodal. Following the established analysis of the specific heat of d-wave cuprate superconductors containing line nodes, we present the specific heat/H**1/2 vs T/H**1/2 of these Ba1-xKxFe2As2 samples which all, due to the absence of magnetic impurities, convincingly show the scaling for line node behavior for the larger gap. There is however no clear observation of the nodal behavior C ~ alpha*T**2 in zero field at low temperatures, with alpha ~ 2 mJ/molK**3 being consistent with the data. This, with the scaling, leaves the possibility of extreme anisotropy in a nodeless larger gap, Delta2, such that the scaling works for fields above 0.25 to 0.5 T (0.2 to 0.4 K in temperature units), where this an estimate for the size of the deep minima in the Delta2 ~ 20-25 K gap. Thus, the change from nodeless to nodal gaps in Ba1-xKxFe2As2 may be closer to the KFe2As2 endpoint than x=0.91.

Two-end solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$

In this paper we consider the Allen-Cahn equation $$ -Δu = u-u^3 \ \mbox{in} \ {\mathbb R}^3 $$ We prove that for each $k\in\left( \sqrt{2},+\infty\right),$ there exists a solution to the equation which has growth rate $k$, i.e. $$ \| u-H(\cdot -k \ln r + c_k) \|_{L^\infty} \to 0$$ The main ingredients of our proof consist: (1) compactness of solutions with growth $k$, (2) moduli space theory of analytical variety of formal dimension one.

In situ observation of phase separation and hierarchical microstructure of KxFe2-ySe2 single crystals

The nature of the phase separation in KxFe2-ySe2 single crystals is not well understood. Here, temperature dependent SEM images provide compelling evidence that phase separation corresponds to a nucleation and growth process rather than a spinodal decomposition. The superconducting phase is the remnant of high temperature phase after iron vacancy order-disorder transition. Three-dimension (3D) spatial distribution of superconducting phase in the iron vacancy ordered matrix was revealed by using focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM). Our results clearly show that superconducting phase forms a hierarchical structure. Understanding the formation of this hierarchical structure not only can guide the synthesis of bulk superconductors in the future, but also greatly enrich our knowledge about the interplay between phase separation and solid-state phase transformations.

Crossover in the magnetic response of single-crystalline Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and Lifshitz critical point evidenced by Hall effect measurements

We report the doping evolution of magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ and Hall coefficient $R_H$ in high quality Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($0.13 \leq x \leq 1$) single crystals. It is found that the normal-state magnetic susceptibility of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ compounds undergoes a crossover from linear-$T$ dependence in the undoped and underdoped samples into KFe$_2$As$_2$-type magnetic response in the overdoped samples with increasing K content. Hall coefficient $R_H$ of underdoped sample $x$=0.22 shows a rapid increase above spin-density-wave transition temperature $T_{SDW}$. Below $T_{SDW}$, it increases slowly. $R_H$ of optimally doped and slightly overdoped samples ($0.34 \leq x \leq 0.65$) shows relative weak temperature dependence and saturation tendency below 150 K. However, $R_H$ of K heavily overdoped samples ($0.80 \leq x \leq 1$) increases rapidly below 150 K. Meanwhile, Hall angle $cot θ_H$ displays a concave temperature dependence within the doping range $0.22 \leq x \leq 0.55$, whereas it changes to a convex temperature dependence within the doping range $0.65 \leq x \leq 1$. The dramatic change coincides with Lifshitz transition occurred around the critical doping $x$=0.80, where ARPES measurements had confirmed that electron pocket disappears with excess hole doping in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ system. It is suggested that the characteristic temperature $T$* at around $120 \sim 150$ K observed in susceptibility and Hall coefficient, as well as previously reported resistivity data, may indicate an incoherence-coherence crossover in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ system.

Upper critical field of KFe2As2 under pressure: A test for the change in the superconducting gap structure

We report measurements of electrical resistivity under pressure to 5.8 GPa, magnetization to 6.7 GPa,and ac susceptibility to 7.1 GPa in KFe2As2. The previously reported change of slope in the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc(p) at a pressure p0=1.8 GPa is confirmed, and Tc(p) is found to be nearly constant above p0 up to 7.1 GPa. The T-p phase diagram is very sensitive to the pressure conditions as a consequence of the anisotropic uniaxial pressure dependence of Tc. Across p0, a change in the behavior of the upper critical field is revealed through a scaling analysis of the slope of Hc2 with the effective mass as determined from the A coefficient of the T2 term of the temperature-dependent resistivity. We show that this scaling provides a quantitative test for the changes of the superconducting gap structure and suggests the development of a kz modulation of the superconducting gap above p0 as a most likely explanation.

Preparation of magnetic tips for spin-polarized STM on Fe_{1+y}Te

The interplay of electronic nematic modulations, magnetic order, superconductivity and structural distortions in strongly correlated electron materials calls for methods which allow characterizing them simultaneously - to allow establishing directly the relationship between these different phenomena. Spin-polarized STM enables studying both, electronic excitations as well as magnetic structure in the same measurement at the atomic scale. Here we demonstrate preparation of magnetic tips, both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, on single crystals of FeTe. This opens up preparation of spin-polarized tips without the need for sophisticated ultra-high vacuum preparation.

On the fourth moment theorem for the complex multiple Wiener-Itô integrals

In this paper, a product formula of Hermite polynomials is given and then the relation between the real Wiener-Itô chaos and the complex Wiener-Itô chaos (or: multiple integrals) is shown. By this relation and the known multivariate extension of the fourth moment theorem for the real multiple integrals, the fourth moment theorem (or say: the Nualart-Peccati criterion) for the complex Wiener-Itô multiple integrals is obtained.

Fermi surface reconstruction in (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ (0.44 $\leq x \leq$ 1) probed by thermoelectric power measurements

We report in-plane thermoelectric power measurements on single crystals of (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ (0.44 $\leq x \leq$ 1). We observe a minimum in the S$|_{T=const}$ versus x at x ~ 0.55 that can be associated with the change in the topology of the Fermi surface, a Lifshitz transition, related to the electron pockets at the center of M point crossing the Fermi level. This feature is clearly observable below ~ 75 K. Thermoelectric power also shows a change in the x ~ 0.8 - 0.9 range, where maximum in the thermoelectric power collapses into a plateau. This Lifshitz transition is most likely related to the reconstruction of the Fermi surface associated with the transformation of the hole pockets at the M point into four blades as observed by ARPES measurements.
