Neutrino decay as a possible interpretation to the MiniBooNE observation with unparticle scenario

In a new measurement on neutrino oscillation $ν_μ\toν_e$, the MiniBooNE Collaboration observes an excess of electron-like events at low energy and the phenomenon may demand an explanation which obviously is beyond the oscillation picuture. We propose that heavier neutrino $ν_2$ decaying into a lighter one $ν_1$ via the transition process $ν_μ\to ν_e+X$ where $X$ denotes any light products, could be a natural mechanism. The theoretical model we employ here is the unparticle scenario established by Georgi. We have studied two particular modes $ν_μ\to ν_e+\Un$ and $ν_μ\to ν_e+\barν_e+ν_e$. Unfortunately, the number coming out from the computation is too small to explain the observation. Moreover, our results are consistent with the cosmology constraint on the neutrino lifetime and the theoretical estimation made by other groups, therefore we can conclude that even though neutrino decay seems plausible in this case, it indeed cannot be the source of the peak at lower energy observed by the MiniBooNE collaboration and there should be other mechanisms responsible for the phenomenon.

Cascade Training Technique for Particle Identification

The cascade training technique which was developed during our work on the MiniBooNE particle identification has been found to be a very efficient way to improve the selection performance, especially when very low background contamination levels are desired. The detailed description of this technique is presented here based on the MiniBooNE detector Monte Carlo simulations, using both artifical neural networks and boosted decision trees as examples.

Integrated Cell Manipulation Systems

A new type of microfluidic system for biological cell manipulation, a CMOS/microfluidic hybrid, is demonstrated. The hybrid system starts with a custom-designed CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) chip fabricated in a semiconductor foundry using standard integration circuit technology. A microfluidic channel is post-fabricated on top of the CMOS chip to provide biocompatible environment. The motion of individual biological cells that are tagged with magnetic beads is directly controlled by the CMOS chip that generates localized magnetic filed patterns using an on-chip array of micro-electromagnets. The speed and the programmability of the CMOS chip further allow for the dynamic reconfiguration of the magnetic fields, substantially increasing the manipulation capability of the hybrid system. The concept of a hybrid system is verified by simultaneously manipulating individual biological cells with microscopic resolution. A new operation protocol that exploits the fast speed of electronics to trap and move a large number of cells with less power consumption is also demonstrated. Combining the advantages of microelectronics, the CMOS/microfluidic hybrid approach presents a new model for a multifunctional lab-on-a chip for biological and medical applications.

Pathwise stationary solutions of stochastic Burgers equations with $L^2[0,1]$-noise and stochastic Burgers integral equations on infinite horizon

In this paper, we show the existence and uniqueness of the stationary solution $u(t,ω)$ and stationary point $Y(ω)$ of the differentiable random dynamical system $U:R\times L^2[0,1]\times Ω\to L^2[0,1]$ generated by the stochastic Burgers equation with $L^2[0,1]$-noise and large viscosity, especially, $u(t,ω)=U(t,Y(ω),ω)=Y(θ(t,ω))$, and $Y(ω) \in H^1[0,1]$ is the unique solution of the following equation in $L^2[0,1]$ $$ Y(ω)={1/2}\int_{-\infty}^0T_ν(-s)\frac{\partial (Y(θ(s,ω))^2}{\partial x}ds +\int_{-\infty}^0T_ν(-s)dW_s(ω), $$ where $θ$ is the group of $P$-preserving ergodic transformation on the canonical probability pace $(Ω, {\cal F}, P)$ such that $θ(t,ω)(s)=W(t+s)-W(t)$.

Boosted Decision Trees as an Alternative to Artificial Neural Networks for Particle Identification

The efficacy of particle identification is compared using artificial neutral networks and boosted decision trees. The comparison is performed in the context of the MiniBooNE, an experiment at Fermilab searching for neutrino oscillations. Based on studies of Monte Carlo samples of simulated data, particle identification with boosting algorithms has better performance than that with artificial neural networks for the MiniBooNE experiment. Although the tests in this paper were for one experiment, it is expected that boosting algorithms will find wide application in physics.

Atmospheric neutrino flux from 3-dimensional simulation

The atmospheric muon and neutrino flux have been simulated using the same approach which successfully accounted for the recent secondary proton, electron and positron flux measurements in orbit by the AMS experiment. For the muon flux, a good agreement is obtained with the CAPRICE and HEAT data for altitudes ranging from sea level up to about 38 km. The general features of the calculated atmospheric neutrino flux are reported and discussed. The flux obtained at the Super-Kamiokande experiment location are reported and compared with other calculations. For low neutrino energies the flux obtained is significantly smaller than that used in the data analysis of underground experiment. The simulation results for the SOUDAN experiment site are also reported.

Secondary electrons and positrons in near earth orbit

The secondary e+ and e- populations in near earth's orbit have been calculated by simulation. The results are in very good agreement with the recent AMS measurements. The e$^+$ over e$^-$ flux ratio for particles below the geomagnetic cutoff appears to be due to the geomagnetic East-West effect.

Analytic Expression for Exact Ground State Energy Based on an Operator Method for a Class of Anharmonic Potentials

A general procedure based on shift operators is formulated to deal with anharmonic potentials. It is possible to extract the ground state energy analytically using our method provided certain consistency relations are satisfied. Analytic expressions for the exact ground state energy have also been derived specifically for a large class of the one-dimensional oscillator with cubic-quartic anharmonic terms. Our analytical results can be used to check the accuracy of existing numerical methods, for instance the method of state-dependent diagonalization. Our results also agree with the asymptotic behavior in the divergent pertubative expansion of quartic harmonic oscillator.

Noncyclic geometric phase for neutrino oscillation

We provide explicit formulae for the noncyclic geometric phases or Pancharatnam phases of neutrino oscillations. Since Pancharatnam phase is a generalization of the Berry phase, our results generalize the previous findings for Berry phase in a recent paper [Phys. Lett. B, 466 (1999) 262]. Unlike the Berry phase, the noncyclic geometric phase offers distinctive advantage in terms of measurement and prediction. In particular, for three-flavor mixing, our explicit formula offers an alternative means of determining the CP-violating phase. Our results can also be extended easily to explore geometric phase associated with neutron-antineutron oscillations.

About the Mixing and CP Violation in Neutrino System

Suppose the geometrical explaination to the weak CP phase in quark sector is also valid for neutrinos, the mixing and CP violation in neutrino system are discussed. We find a larger $J_{CP}$ than $3\times 10^{-3}$ implys the large-mixing solution for solar neutrino problem. In case of bi-maximal mixing, we predict relative large CP violation with $J_{CP}$ larger than $10^{-3}$ in neutrino system, except the third mixing angle approachs to 0 or $π/2$ very closely.

On the Geometry Origin of Weak CP Phase

In this work, the postulation that weak CP phase originates in a certain geometry, is further discussed. Some intrinsic and strict constraints on the mixing angles, weak CP phase, and the Wolfenstein's parameters $ρ$ and $η$ are given by present data and the postulation itself. Especially, we predict $0.0076 \leq |V_{td}| \leq 0.0093, 74.9^o \leq γ\leq 75.7^o$ when the corresponding inputs are at the $90% C. L.$. The comparison of the predictions to the relevant experimental and theoretical results is listed. All the predictions coincide with the present experimental results and theoretical analysis very well.

Two Time-dependent Solutions of Magnetic field Annihilation in Two Dimensions

In this paper, two classes of exact analytic time-dependent soultion of magnetic annihilation for incompressible magnetic fluid, have been obtained by solving the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations directly. The solutions derived here possess scaling property with time $t$ as the scale factor. Based on these two solutions, we find that, for some given inflow fields, the evolution of the annihilating magnetic field can be described by the solutions of certain ordinary differential equations whose variables are dilated simply by time $t$. The relevant evolution characteristics in the process of magnetic annihilation are also revealed.

Estimate of Wolfenstein's Parameters rho and eta Based on a Geometry Viewpoint to the Weak CP Phase

Based on a geometric postulation on the weak CP phase in Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, a positive rho is asserted. Besides, 0.18<eta<0.54 and 0.048<rho<0.140 are permitted by the present data. The corresponding geometric constraint on Wolfenstein's parameters is also worked out. We find that, according to the geometry viewpoint, eta and rho satisfy an approximate linear relation. These results can be put to the more precisely tests in near future.

CP violation in neutrino mixing matrix and leptogenesis

The CP violation required in leptogenesis may have different origin, but in an effective theory they all are related to the rephasing invariant CP violating measure in the mixing matrix of the leptonic sector. We point out that the maximum amount of CP violation in some models can be estimated with our present knowledge of the neutrino mixing angles, which can help us understand the CP violation in the generation of the lepton asymmetry of the universe. For example, the possibility of leptogenesis may be ruled out in some models from an knowledge of the effective neutrino mass matrix.

Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Matrix, Unitarity Triangle and Geometry Origin of the Weak CP Phase

In this work, the postulation that weak CP phase originates in a certain geometry, is further discussed. According to this postulation, the weak CP phase is determined by three mixing angles. So, if we can determine experimentally three elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, we can then determine the whole CKM matrix and correspondingly, the unitarity triangle. We find that the angle gamma is about pi/2 and the weak CP phase delta (delta_{13}) only can exist in the first or fourth quadrant. The conclusions coincide with the relevant analysis. Some other predictions are given in this paper, the comparison of the predictions based on the postulation to the relevant experimental and theoretical results is listed. All the predictions are consistent with the present experimental results.

Determine the parameter Bk of the K0-K0bar system by means of the precise Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements

Taking use of the relation between weak CP phase and the other three mixing angles in Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix postulated by us before, the uncertainty coming from the weak interaction can be reduced, furthermore, by means of the relation between the calculation result about mixing parameter epsilon from the box diagrams and the related experimental data in K0-K0bar system, the parameter Bk can be extracted. We take Vud, Vub and Vtb as inputs, when we let them vary in the ranges 0.9745<=Vud<=0.9760, 0.0018<=Vub<=0.0045 and 0.9991<=Vtb<=0.9993, we find the permitted window for Bk is 0.444<=Bk<=1.242. With the more precise measurment on the CKM matrix elements in the future, we can determine Bk more precisely.

Does Weak CP Phase Originate from a Certain Geometry ?

We further investigate the probability that, weak CP phase originates in a certain geometry. We find that our postulation on weak CP Phase gives strict constraints on angle gamma in unitarity triangle DB and the element Vtd in Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. The predicted Vtd is about 0.0086 and gamma about 75.3^o with the very narrow window respectively. These two parameters can be used to test our postulation precisely in near future.
