A Survey on Federated Recommendation Systems

Federated learning has recently been applied to recommendation systems to protect user privacy. In federated learning settings, recommendation systems can train recommendation models only collecting the intermediate parameters instead of the real user data, which greatly enhances the user privacy. Beside, federated recommendation systems enable to collaborate with other data platforms to improve recommended model performance while meeting the regulation and privacy constraints. However, federated recommendation systems faces many new challenges such as privacy, security, heterogeneity and communication costs. While significant research has been conducted in these areas, gaps in the surveying literature still exist. In this survey, we-(1) summarize some common privacy mechanisms used in federated recommendation systems and discuss the advantages and limitations of each mechanism; (2) review some robust aggregation strategies and several novel attacks against security; (3) summarize some approaches to address heterogeneity and communication costs problems; (4)introduce some open source platforms that can be used to build federated recommendation systems; (5) present some prospective research directions in the future. This survey can guide researchers and practitioners understand the research progress in these areas.

Efficient and Parallel Solution of High-order Continuous Time Galerkin for Dissipative and Wave Propagation Problems

We propose efficient and parallel algorithms for the implementation of the high-order continuous time Galerkin method for dissipative and wave propagation problems. By using Legendre polynomials as shape functions, we obtain a special structure of the stiffness matrix which allows us to extend the diagonal Padé approximation to solve ordinary differential equations with source terms. The unconditional stability, $hp$ error estimates, and $hp$ superconvergence at the nodes of the continuous time Galerkin method are proved. Numerical examples confirm our theoretical results.

2D-XY ferromagnetism with high transition temperature in Janus monolayer V$_{2}$XN (X = P, As)

Two-dimensional (2D) XY magnets with easy magnetization planes support the nontrivial topological spin textures whose dissipationless transport is highly desirable for 2D spintronic devices. Here, we predicted that Janus monolayer V$_{2}$XN (X = P, As) with a square lattice are 2D-XY ferromagnets by first-principles calculations. Both the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and magnetic shape anisotropy favor an in-plane magnetization, leading to an easy magnetization $xy$-plane in Janus monolayer V$_{2}$XN. Resting on the Monte Carlo simulations, we observed the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition in monolayer V$_{2}$XN with transition temperature $T_{\rm BKT}$ being above the room temperature. Especially, monolayer V$_{2}$AsN has a magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of 292.0 $μ$eV per V atom and a $T_{\rm BKT}$ of 434 K, which is larger than that of monolayer V$_{2}$PN. Moreover, a tensile strain of 5\% can further improve the $T_{\rm BKT}$ of monolayer V$_{2}$XN to be above 500 K. Our results indicated that Janus monolayer V$_{2}$XN (X = P, As) were candidate materials to realize high-temperature 2D-XY ferromagnetism for spintronics applications.

Relation between the eventual continuity and the e-property for Markov-Feller semigroups

We investigate the relation between the e-property and the eventual continuity, or called the asymptotic equicontinuity, which is a generalization of the e-property. We prove that, for any discrete-time or strongly continuous continuous-time eventually continuous Markov-Feller semigroup with an ergodic measure, if the interior of the support of the ergodic measure is nonempty, then the e-property is satisfied on the interior of the support. In particular, it implies that, restricted on the support of each ergodic measure, the e-property and the eventual continuity are equivalent for the discrete-time and the strongly continuous continuous-time Markov-Feller semigroups.

Fuzzy Knowledge Distillation from High-Order TSK to Low-Order TSK

High-order Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy classifiers possess powerful classification performance yet have fewer fuzzy rules, but always be impaired by its exponential growth training time and poorer interpretability owing to High-order polynomial used in consequent part of fuzzy rule, while Low-order TSK fuzzy classifiers run quickly with high interpretability, however they usually require more fuzzy rules and perform relatively not very well. Address this issue, a novel TSK fuzzy classifier embeded with knowledge distillation in deep learning called HTSK-LLM-DKD is proposed in this study. HTSK-LLM-DKD achieves the following distinctive characteristics: 1) It takes High-order TSK classifier as teacher model and Low-order TSK fuzzy classifier as student model, and leverages the proposed LLM-DKD (Least Learning Machine based Decoupling Knowledge Distillation) to distill the fuzzy dark knowledge from High-order TSK fuzzy classifier to Low-order TSK fuzzy classifier, which resulting in Low-order TSK fuzzy classifier endowed with enhanced performance surpassing or at least comparable to High-order TSK classifier, as well as high interpretability; specifically 2) The Negative Euclidean distance between the output of teacher model and each class is employed to obtain the teacher logits, and then it compute teacher/student soft labels by the softmax function with distillating temperature parameter; 3) By reformulating the Kullback-Leibler divergence, it decouples fuzzy dark knowledge into target class knowledge and non-target class knowledge, and transfers them to student model. The advantages of HTSK-LLM-DKD are verified on the benchmarking UCI datasets and a real dataset Cleveland heart disease, in terms of classification performance and model interpretability.

TcGAN: Semantic-Aware and Structure-Preserved GANs with Individual Vision Transformer for Fast Arbitrary One-Shot Image Generation

One-shot image generation (OSG) with generative adversarial networks that learn from the internal patches of a given image has attracted world wide attention. In recent studies, scholars have primarily focused on extracting features of images from probabilistically distributed inputs with pure convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, it is quite difficult for CNNs with limited receptive domain to extract and maintain the global structural information. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel structure-preserved method TcGAN with individual vision transformer to overcome the shortcomings of the existing one-shot image generation methods. Specifically, TcGAN preserves global structure of an image during training to be compatible with local details while maintaining the integrity of semantic-aware information by exploiting the powerful long-range dependencies modeling capability of the transformer. We also propose a new scaling formula having scale-invariance during the calculation period, which effectively improves the generated image quality of the OSG model on image super-resolution tasks. We present the design of the TcGAN converter framework, comprehensive experimental as well as ablation studies demonstrating the ability of TcGAN to achieve arbitrary image generation with the fastest running time. Lastly, TcGAN achieves the most excellent performance in terms of applying it to other image processing tasks, e.g., super-resolution as well as image harmonization, the results further prove its superiority.

Continuous-Time Fixed-Lag Smoothing for LiDAR-Inertial-Camera SLAM

Localization and mapping with heterogeneous multi-sensor fusion have been prevalent in recent years. To adequately fuse multi-modal sensor measurements received at different time instants and different frequencies, we estimate the continuous-time trajectory by fixed-lag smoothing within a factor-graph optimization framework. With the continuous-time formulation, we can query poses at any time instants corresponding to the sensor measurements. To bound the computation complexity of the continuous-time fixed-lag smoother, we maintain temporal and keyframe sliding windows with constant size, and probabilistically marginalize out control points of the trajectory and other states, which allows preserving prior information for future sliding-window optimization. Based on continuous-time fixed-lag smoothing, we design tightly-coupled multi-modal SLAM algorithms with a variety of sensor combinations, like the LiDAR-inertial and LiDAR-inertial-camera SLAM systems, in which online timeoffset calibration is also naturally supported. More importantly, benefiting from the marginalization and our derived analytical Jacobians for optimization, the proposed continuous-time SLAM systems can achieve real-time performance regardless of the high complexity of continuous-time formulation. The proposed multi-modal SLAM systems have been widely evaluated on three public datasets and self-collect datasets. The results demonstrate that the proposed continuous-time SLAM systems can achieve high-accuracy pose estimations and outperform existing state-of-the-art methods. Adaptive Value Decomposition with Greedy Marginal Contribution Computation for Cooperative Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

Real-world cooperation often requires intensive coordination among agents simultaneously. This task has been extensively studied within the framework of cooperative multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), and value decomposition methods are among those cutting-edge solutions. However, traditional methods that learn the value function as a monotonic mixing of per-agent utilities cannot solve the tasks with non-monotonic returns. This hinders their application in generic scenarios. Recent methods tackle this problem from the perspective of implicit credit assignment by learning value functions with complete expressiveness or using additional structures to improve cooperation. However, they are either difficult to learn due to large joint action spaces or insufficient to capture the complicated interactions among agents which are essential to solving tasks with non-monotonic returns. To address these problems, we propose a novel explicit credit assignment method to address the non-monotonic problem. Our method, Adaptive Value decomposition with Greedy Marginal contribution (AVGM), is based on an adaptive value decomposition that learns the cooperative value of a group of dynamically changing agents. We first illustrate that the proposed value decomposition can consider the complicated interactions among agents and is feasible to learn in large-scale scenarios. Then, our method uses a greedy marginal contribution computed from the value decomposition as an individual credit to incentivize agents to learn the optimal cooperative policy. We further extend the module with an action encoder to guarantee the linear time complexity for computing the greedy marginal contribution. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves significant performance improvements in several non-monotonic domains.

Superconductivity in Li8Au electride

Located at crystal voids, interstitial anion electrons (IAEs) have diverse topologies, which may be tuned to achieve new properties. Elucidating the role of IAEs in electron-phonon coupling (EPC), and using it to design new electride superconductors, leads to the current prediction of superconducting Li8Au at high pressure. We suggest that the occurence of high-temperature superconductivity in electrides requires high-symmetry structures with hydrogen-like cages, an electron acceptor element to balance charges, and isolated IAEs coupled with medium-frequency vibrations. The uniquely designed Li8Au electride has a NaCl-type (B1) lattice, with atomic Au and cubic Li8 cages as bases. Isolated IAEs are formed at the cage centers, with extra charges taken up by Au. These octahedrally coordinated IAEs have a p-orbital-like attribute and are strongly coupled with atomic vibrations in the Li8 cages. The strong EPC in Li8Au results in a calculated Tc of 73.1 K at 250 GPa, which is the highest Tc reported to date for all the electrides. A slight substitutional Pt doping can enhance the Tc of Li8Au to exceed liquid nitrogen temperature.

Operation-level Progressive Differentiable Architecture Search

Differentiable Neural Architecture Search (DARTS) is becoming more and more popular among Neural Architecture Search (NAS) methods because of its high search efficiency and low compute cost. However, the stability of DARTS is very inferior, especially skip connections aggregation that leads to performance collapse. Though existing methods leverage Hessian eigenvalues to alleviate skip connections aggregation, they make DARTS unable to explore architectures with better performance. In the paper, we propose operation-level progressive differentiable neural architecture search (OPP-DARTS) to avoid skip connections aggregation and explore better architectures simultaneously. We first divide the search process into several stages during the search phase and increase candidate operations into the search space progressively at the beginning of each stage. It can effectively alleviate the unfair competition between operations during the search phase of DARTS by offsetting the inherent unfair advantage of the skip connection over other operations. Besides, to keep the competition between operations relatively fair and select the operation from the candidate operations set that makes training loss of the supernet largest. The experiment results indicate that our method is effective and efficient. Our method's performance on CIFAR-10 is superior to the architecture found by standard DARTS, and the transferability of our method also surpasses standard DARTS. We further demonstrate the robustness of our method on three simple search spaces, i.e., S2, S3, S4, and the results show us that our method is more robust than standard DARTS. Our code is available at https://github.com/zxunyu/OPP-DARTS.

FG-Depth: Flow-Guided Unsupervised Monocular Depth Estimation

The great potential of unsupervised monocular depth estimation has been demonstrated by many works due to low annotation cost and impressive accuracy comparable to supervised methods. To further improve the performance, recent works mainly focus on designing more complex network structures and exploiting extra supervised information, e.g., semantic segmentation. These methods optimize the models by exploiting the reconstructed relationship between the target and reference images in varying degrees. However, previous methods prove that this image reconstruction optimization is prone to get trapped in local minima. In this paper, our core idea is to guide the optimization with prior knowledge from pretrained Flow-Net. And we show that the bottleneck of unsupervised monocular depth estimation can be broken with our simple but effective framework named FG-Depth. In particular, we propose (i) a flow distillation loss to replace the typical photometric loss that limits the capacity of the model and (ii) a prior flow based mask to remove invalid pixels that bring the noise in training loss. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of each component, and our approach achieves state-of-the-art results on both KITTI and NYU-Depth-v2 datasets.

A high order explicit time finite element method for the acoustic wave equation with discontinuous coefficients

In this paper, we propose a novel high order unfitted finite element method on Cartesian meshes for solving the acoustic wave equation with discontinuous coefficients having complex interface geometry. The unfitted finite element method does not require any penalty to achieve optimal convergence. We also introduce a new explicit time discretization method for the ODE system resulting from the spatial discretization of the wave equation. The strong stability and optimal $hp$-version error estimates both in time and space are established. Numerical examples confirm our theoretical results.

History-Aware Hierarchical Transformer for Multi-session Open-domain Dialogue System

With the evolution of pre-trained language models, current open-domain dialogue systems have achieved great progress in conducting one-session conversations. In contrast, Multi-Session Conversation (MSC), which consists of multiple sessions over a long term with the same user, is under-investigated. In this paper, we propose History-Aware Hierarchical Transformer (HAHT) for multi-session open-domain dialogue. HAHT maintains a long-term memory of history conversations and utilizes history information to understand current conversation context and generate well-informed and context-relevant responses. Specifically, HAHT first encodes history conversation sessions hierarchically into a history memory. Then, HAHT leverages historical information to facilitate the understanding of the current conversation context by encoding the history memory together with the current context with attention-based mechanisms. Finally, to explicitly utilize historical information, HAHT uses a history-aware response generator that switches between a generic vocabulary and a history-aware vocabulary. Experimental results on a large-scale MSC dataset suggest that the proposed HAHT model consistently outperforms baseline models. Human evaluation results support that HAHT generates more human-like, context-relevant and history-relevant responses than baseline models.

Cooperative trajectory planning algorithm of USV-UAV with hull dynamic constraints

Efficient trajectory generation in complex dynamic environments remains an open problem in the unmanned surface vehicle (USV). The perception of the USV is usually interfered with by the swing of the hull and the ambient weather, making it challenging to plan the optimal USV trajectories. In this paper, a cooperative trajectory planning algorithm for the coupled USV-UAV system is proposed to ensure that USV can execute a safe and smooth path in the process of autonomous advance in multi-obstacle maps. Specifically, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) plays the role of a flight sensor, providing real-time global map and obstacle information with a lightweight semantic segmentation network and 3D projection transformation. And then, an initial obstacle avoidance trajectory is generated by a graph-based search method. Concerning the unique under-actuated kinematic characteristics of the USV, a numerical optimization method based on hull dynamic constraints is introduced to make the trajectory easier to be tracked for motion control. Finally, a motion control method based on NMPC with the lowest energy consumption constraint during execution is proposed. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the whole system, and the generated trajectory is locally optimal for USV with considerable tracking accuracy.

Data Heterogeneity Differential Privacy: From Theory to Algorithm

Traditionally, the random noise is equally injected when training with different data instances in the field of differential privacy (DP). In this paper, we first give sharper excess risk bounds of DP stochastic gradient descent (SGD) method. Considering most of the previous methods are under convex conditions, we use Polyak-Łojasiewicz condition to relax it in this paper. Then, after observing that different training data instances affect the machine learning model to different extent, we consider the heterogeneity of training data and attempt to improve the performance of DP-SGD from a new perspective. Specifically, by introducing the influence function (IF), we quantitatively measure the contributions of various training data on the final machine learning model. If the contribution made by a single data instance is so little that attackers cannot infer anything from the model, we do not add noise when training with it. Based on this observation, we design a `Performance Improving' DP-SGD algorithm: PIDP-SGD. Theoretical and experimental results show that our proposed PIDP-SGD improves the performance significantly.

Rethinking Dimensionality Reduction in Grid-based 3D Object Detection

Bird's eye view (BEV) is widely adopted by most of the current point cloud detectors due to the applicability of well-explored 2D detection techniques. However, existing methods obtain BEV features by simply collapsing voxel or point features along the height dimension, which causes the heavy loss of 3D spatial information. To alleviate the information loss, we propose a novel point cloud detection network based on a Multi-level feature dimensionality reduction strategy, called MDRNet. In MDRNet, the Spatial-aware Dimensionality Reduction (SDR) is designed to dynamically focus on the valuable parts of the object during voxel-to-BEV feature transformation. Furthermore, the Multi-level Spatial Residuals (MSR) is proposed to fuse the multi-level spatial information in the BEV feature maps. Extensive experiments on nuScenes show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. The code will be available upon publication.

BSNet: Lane Detection via Draw B-spline Curves Nearby

Curve-based methods are one of the classic lane detection methods. They learn the holistic representation of lane lines, which is intuitive and concise. However, their performance lags behind the recent state-of-the-art methods due to the limitation of their lane representation and optimization. In this paper, we revisit the curve-based lane detection methods from the perspectives of the lane representations' globality and locality. The globality of lane representation is the ability to complete invisible parts of lanes with visible parts. The locality of lane representation is the ability to modify lanes locally which can simplify parameter optimization. Specifically, we first propose to exploit the b-spline curve to fit lane lines since it meets the locality and globality. Second, we design a simple yet efficient network BSNet to ensure the acquisition of global and local features. Third, we propose a new curve distance to make the lane detection optimization objective more reasonable and alleviate ill-conditioned problems. The proposed methods achieve state-of-the-art performance on the Tusimple, CULane, and LLAMAS datasets, which dramatically improved the accuracy of curve-based methods in the lane detection task while running far beyond real-time (197FPS).

Converse Attention Knowledge Transfer for Low-Resource Named Entity Recognition

In recent years, great success has been achieved in many tasks of natural language processing (NLP), e.g., named entity recognition (NER), especially in the high-resource language, i.e., English, thanks in part to the considerable amount of labeled resources. However, most low-resource languages do not have such an abundance of labeled data as high-resource English, leading to poor performance of NER in these low-resource languages. Inspired by knowledge transfer, we propose Converse Attention Network, or CAN in short, to improve the performance of NER in low-resource languages by leveraging the knowledge learned in pretrained high-resource English models. CAN first translates low-resource languages into high-resource English using an attention based translation module. In the process of translation, CAN obtain the attention matrices that align the two languages. Furthermore, CAN use the attention matrices to align the high-resource semantic features from a pretrained high-resource English model with the low-resource semantic features. As a result, CAN obtains aligned high-resource semantic features to enrich the representations of low-resource languages. Experiments on four low-resource NER datasets show that CAN achieves consistent and significant performance improvements, which indicates the effectiveness of CAN.
