Bootstrap Latent Representations for Multi-modal Recommendation

This paper studies the multi-modal recommendation problem, where the item multi-modality information (e.g., images and textual descriptions) is exploited to improve the recommendation accuracy. Besides the user-item interaction graph, existing state-of-the-art methods usually use auxiliary graphs (e.g., user-user or item-item relation graph) to augment the learned representations of users and/or items. These representations are often propagated and aggregated on auxiliary graphs using graph convolutional networks, which can be prohibitively expensive in computation and memory, especially for large graphs. Moreover, existing multi-modal recommendation methods usually leverage randomly sampled negative examples in Bayesian Personalized Ranking (BPR) loss to guide the learning of user/item representations, which increases the computational cost on large graphs and may also bring noisy supervision signals into the training process. To tackle the above issues, we propose a novel self-supervised multi-modal recommendation model, dubbed BM3, which requires neither augmentations from auxiliary graphs nor negative samples. Specifically, BM3 first bootstraps latent contrastive views from the representations of users and items with a simple dropout augmentation. It then jointly optimizes three multi-modal objectives to learn the representations of users and items by reconstructing the user-item interaction graph and aligning modality features under both inter- and intra-modality perspectives. BM3 alleviates both the need for contrasting with negative examples and the complex graph augmentation from an additional target network for contrastive view generation. We show BM3 outperforms prior recommendation models on three datasets with number of nodes ranging from 20K to 200K, while achieving a 2-9X reduction in training time. Our code is available at https://github.com/enoche/BM3.

SelfCF: A Simple Framework for Self-supervised Collaborative Filtering

Collaborative filtering (CF) is widely used to learn informative latent representations of users and items from observed interactions. Existing CF-based methods commonly adopt negative sampling to discriminate different items. Training with negative sampling on large datasets is computationally expensive. Further, negative items should be carefully sampled under the defined distribution, in order to avoid selecting an observed positive item in the training dataset. Unavoidably, some negative items sampled from the training dataset could be positive in the test set. In this paper, we propose a self-supervised collaborative filtering framework (SelfCF), that is specially designed for recommender scenario with implicit feedback. The proposed SelfCF framework simplifies the Siamese networks and can be easily applied to existing deep-learning based CF models, which we refer to as backbone networks. The main idea of SelfCF is to augment the output embeddings generated by backbone networks, because it is infeasible to augment raw input of user/item ids. We propose and study three output perturbation techniques that can be applied to different types of backbone networks including both traditional CF models and graph-based models. The framework enables learning informative representations of users and items without negative samples, and is agnostic to the encapsulated backbones. We conduct comprehensive experiments on four datasets to show that our framework may achieve even better recommendation accuracy than the encapsulated supervised counterpart with a 2$\times$--4$\times$ faster training speed. We also show that SelfCF can boost up the accuracy by up to 17.79% on average, compared with a self-supervised framework BUIR.

Robust and Imperceptible Black-box DNN Watermarking Based on Fourier Perturbation Analysis and Frequency Sensitivity Clustering

Recently, more and more attention has been focused on the intellectual property protection of deep neural networks (DNNs), promoting DNN watermarking to become a hot research topic. Compared with embedding watermarks directly into DNN parameters, inserting trigger-set watermarks enables us to verify the ownership without knowing the internal details of the DNN, which is more suitable for application scenarios. The cost is we have to carefully craft the trigger samples. Mainstream methods construct the trigger samples by inserting a noticeable pattern to the clean samples in the spatial domain, which does not consider sample imperceptibility, sample robustness and model robustness, and therefore has limited the watermarking performance and the model generalization. It has motivated the authors in this paper to propose a novel DNN watermarking method based on Fourier perturbation analysis and frequency sensitivity clustering. First, we analyze the perturbation impact of different frequency components of the input sample on the task functionality of the DNN by applying random perturbation. Then, by K-means clustering, we determine the frequency components that result in superior watermarking performance for crafting the trigger samples. Our experiments show that the proposed work not only maintains the performance of the DNN on its original task, but also provides better watermarking performance compared with related works.

NeRF-Loc: Visual Localization with Conditional Neural Radiance Field

We propose a novel visual re-localization method based on direct matching between the implicit 3D descriptors and the 2D image with transformer. A conditional neural radiance field(NeRF) is chosen as the 3D scene representation in our pipeline, which supports continuous 3D descriptors generation and neural rendering. By unifying the feature matching and the scene coordinate regression to the same framework, our model learns both generalizable knowledge and scene prior respectively during two training stages. Furthermore, to improve the localization robustness when domain gap exists between training and testing phases, we propose an appearance adaptation layer to explicitly align styles between the 3D model and the query image. Experiments show that our method achieves higher localization accuracy than other learning-based approaches on multiple benchmarks. Code is available at \url{https://github.com/JenningsL/nerf-loc}.

An improved complex fourth moment theorem

For a series of univariate or multivariate complex multiple Wiener-Itô integrals, we appreciably improve the previously known contractions condition of complex Fourth Moment Theorem (FMT) and present a fourth moment type Berry-Esséen bound under Wasserstein distance. Note that in some special cases of univariate complex multiple Wiener-Itô integral, the Berry-Esséen bound we acquired is optimal. A remarkable fact is that the Berry-Esséen bound of multivariate complex multiple Wiener-Itô integral is related to the partially order of the index of the complex multiple Wiener-Itô integral, which has no real counterparts as far as we know. As an application, we explore the asymptotic property for the numerator of a ratio process which originates from the classical Chandler wobble model.

TimesNet: Temporal 2D-Variation Modeling for General Time Series Analysis

Time series analysis is of immense importance in extensive applications, such as weather forecasting, anomaly detection, and action recognition. This paper focuses on temporal variation modeling, which is the common key problem of extensive analysis tasks. Previous methods attempt to accomplish this directly from the 1D time series, which is extremely challenging due to the intricate temporal patterns. Based on the observation of multi-periodicity in time series, we ravel out the complex temporal variations into the multiple intraperiod- and interperiod-variations. To tackle the limitations of 1D time series in representation capability, we extend the analysis of temporal variations into the 2D space by transforming the 1D time series into a set of 2D tensors based on multiple periods. This transformation can embed the intraperiod- and interperiod-variations into the columns and rows of the 2D tensors respectively, making the 2D-variations to be easily modeled by 2D kernels. Technically, we propose the TimesNet with TimesBlock as a task-general backbone for time series analysis. TimesBlock can discover the multi-periodicity adaptively and extract the complex temporal variations from transformed 2D tensors by a parameter-efficient inception block. Our proposed TimesNet achieves consistent state-of-the-art in five mainstream time series analysis tasks, including short- and long-term forecasting, imputation, classification, and anomaly detection. RIFormer: Keep Your Vision Backbone Effective While Removing Token Mixer

This paper studies how to keep a vision backbone effective while removing token mixers in its basic building blocks. Token mixers, as self-attention for vision transformers (ViTs), are intended to perform information communication between different spatial tokens but suffer from considerable computational cost and latency. However, directly removing them will lead to an incomplete model structure prior, and thus brings a significant accuracy drop. To this end, we first develop an RepIdentityFormer base on the re-parameterizing idea, to study the token mixer free model architecture. And we then explore the improved learning paradigm to break the limitation of simple token mixer free backbone, and summarize the empirical practice into 5 guidelines. Equipped with the proposed optimization strategy, we are able to build an extremely simple vision backbone with encouraging performance, while enjoying the high efficiency during inference. Extensive experiments and ablative analysis also demonstrate that the inductive bias of network architecture, can be incorporated into simple network structure with appropriate optimization strategy. We hope this work can serve as a starting point for the exploration of optimization-driven efficient network design. Project page: https://techmonsterwang.github.io/RIFormer/.

Prediction of interesting ferromagnetism in Janus semiconducting Cr$_2$AsP monolayer

Two-dimensional (2D) half-metallic materials that have sparked intense interest in advanced spintronic applications are essential to the developing next-generation nanospintronic devices. Here we have adopted a first-principles calculation method to predict the magnetic properties of intrinsic, Se-doped, and biaxial strain tuning Cr$_2$AsP monolayer. The Janus Cr$_2$AsP monolayer is proved to be an intrinsic ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductor with a exchange splitting bandgap of 0.15 eV at the PBE+U level. Concentration-dependent Se doping such as Cr$_2$As$_{1-x}$Se$_x$P (x = 0.25, 0.50, 0.75) can regulate Cr$_2$AsP from FM semiconductor to FM half-metallicity. Specifically, the spin-up channel crosses the Fermi level, while the spin-down channel has a bandgap. More interestingly, the wide half-metallic bandgaps and spin bandgaps make them have important implications for the preparation of spintronic devices. At last, we also explore the effect of biaxial strain from -14% to 10% on the magnetism of the Cr$_2$AsP monolayer. There appears a transition from FM to antiferromagnetic (AFM) at a compressive strain of -10.7%, originating from the competition between the indirect FM superexchange interaction and the direct AFM interaction between the nearest-neighbor Cr atoms. Additionally, when the compressive strain to -2% or the tensile strain to 6%, the semiconducting Cr$_2$AsP becomes a half-metallic material. These charming properties render the Janus Cr$_2$AsP monolayer with great potential for applications in spintronic devices.

Robust Neural Architecture Search

Neural Architectures Search (NAS) becomes more and more popular over these years. However, NAS-generated models tends to suffer greater vulnerability to various malicious attacks. Lots of robust NAS methods leverage adversarial training to enhance the robustness of NAS-generated models, however, they neglected the nature accuracy of NAS-generated models. In our paper, we propose a novel NAS method, Robust Neural Architecture Search (RNAS). To design a regularization term to balance accuracy and robustness, RNAS generates architectures with both high accuracy and good robustness. To reduce search cost, we further propose to use noise examples instead adversarial examples as input to search architectures. Extensive experiments show that RNAS achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on both image classification and adversarial attacks, which illustrates the proposed RNAS achieves a good tradeoff between robustness and accuracy.

Revisiting the Spatial and Temporal Modeling for Few-shot Action Recognition

Spatial and temporal modeling is one of the most core aspects of few-shot action recognition. Most previous works mainly focus on long-term temporal relation modeling based on high-level spatial representations, without considering the crucial low-level spatial features and short-term temporal relations. Actually, the former feature could bring rich local semantic information, and the latter feature could represent motion characteristics of adjacent frames, respectively. In this paper, we propose SloshNet, a new framework that revisits the spatial and temporal modeling for few-shot action recognition in a finer manner. First, to exploit the low-level spatial features, we design a feature fusion architecture search module to automatically search for the best combination of the low-level and high-level spatial features. Next, inspired by the recent transformer, we introduce a long-term temporal modeling module to model the global temporal relations based on the extracted spatial appearance features. Meanwhile, we design another short-term temporal modeling module to encode the motion characteristics between adjacent frame representations. After that, the final predictions can be obtained by feeding the embedded rich spatial-temporal features to a common frame-level class prototype matcher. We extensively validate the proposed SloshNet on four few-shot action recognition datasets, including Something-Something V2, Kinetics, UCF101, and HMDB51. It achieves favorable results against state-of-the-art methods in all datasets.

Better "CMOS" Produces Clearer Images: Learning Space-Variant Blur Estimation for Blind Image Super-Resolution

Most of the existing blind image Super-Resolution (SR) methods assume that the blur kernels are space-invariant. However, the blur involved in real applications are usually space-variant due to object motion, out-of-focus, etc., resulting in severe performance drop of the advanced SR methods. To address this problem, we firstly introduce two new datasets with out-of-focus blur, i.e., NYUv2-BSR and Cityscapes-BSR, to support further researches of blind SR with space-variant blur. Based on the datasets, we design a novel Cross-MOdal fuSion network (CMOS) that estimate both blur and semantics simultaneously, which leads to improved SR results. It involves a feature Grouping Interactive Attention (GIA) module to make the two modalities interact more effectively and avoid inconsistency. GIA can also be used for the interaction of other features because of the universality of its structure. Qualitative and quantitative experiments compared with state-of-the-art methods on above datasets and real-world images demonstrate the superiority of our method, e.g., obtaining PSNR/SSIM by +1.91/+0.0048 on NYUv2-BSR than MANet.

The unexpected magnetism in 2D group-IV-doped GaN for spintronic applications

In this study, the structural and magnetic properties of group-IV-doped monolayer GaN were systematically investigated by first-principles calculations. Among all the group-IV dopants, only Ge and Sn atoms prefer to substitute the Ga atom of monolayer GaN and form a buckling structure with a magnetic moment of 1 $μ_B$ per dopant. The N-rich growth conditions are more desirable for such a substitution process than the Ga-rich grow conditions. With a large diffusion barrier vertical to the monolayer GaN, both Ge and Sn atoms tend to stay on the same side of monolayer GaN with an antiferromagnetic coupling between them. When intrinsic vacancies exist in monolayer GaN, the magnetic moments of group-IV dopants vanish due to the charge transferring from the dopants to Ga or N vacancies. The precondition creation of Ga vacancies, a plentiful supply of Ge or Sn dopants, and the N-rich conditions can be adopted to maintain the magnetic properties of group-IV-doped monolayer GaN. These theoretical results help to promote the applications of 2D GaN-based materials in spintronics.

MHCCL: Masked Hierarchical Cluster-Wise Contrastive Learning for Multivariate Time Series

Learning semantic-rich representations from raw unlabeled time series data is critical for downstream tasks such as classification and forecasting. Contrastive learning has recently shown its promising representation learning capability in the absence of expert annotations. However, existing contrastive approaches generally treat each instance independently, which leads to false negative pairs that share the same semantics. To tackle this problem, we propose MHCCL, a Masked Hierarchical Cluster-wise Contrastive Learning model, which exploits semantic information obtained from the hierarchical structure consisting of multiple latent partitions for multivariate time series. Motivated by the observation that fine-grained clustering preserves higher purity while coarse-grained one reflects higher-level semantics, we propose a novel downward masking strategy to filter out fake negatives and supplement positives by incorporating the multi-granularity information from the clustering hierarchy. In addition, a novel upward masking strategy is designed in MHCCL to remove outliers of clusters at each partition to refine prototypes, which helps speed up the hierarchical clustering process and improves the clustering quality. We conduct experimental evaluations on seven widely-used multivariate time series datasets. The results demonstrate the superiority of MHCCL over the state-of-the-art approaches for unsupervised time series representation learning.

Learning Federated Visual Prompt in Null Space for MRI Reconstruction

Federated Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) reconstruction enables multiple hospitals to collaborate distributedly without aggregating local data, thereby protecting patient privacy. However, the data heterogeneity caused by different MRI protocols, insufficient local training data, and limited communication bandwidth inevitably impair global model convergence and updating. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm, FedPR, to learn federated visual prompts in the null space of global prompt for MRI reconstruction. FedPR is a new federated paradigm that adopts a powerful pre-trained model while only learning and communicating the prompts with few learnable parameters, thereby significantly reducing communication costs and achieving competitive performance on limited local data. Moreover, to deal with catastrophic forgetting caused by data heterogeneity, FedPR also updates efficient federated visual prompts that project the local prompts into an approximate null space of the global prompt, thereby suppressing the interference of gradients on the server performance. Extensive experiments on federated MRI show that FedPR significantly outperforms state-of-the-art FL algorithms with <6% of communication costs when given the limited amount of local training data.

Adaptive Assignment for Geometry Aware Local Feature Matching

The detector-free feature matching approaches are currently attracting great attention thanks to their excellent performance. However, these methods still struggle at large-scale and viewpoint variations, due to the geometric inconsistency resulting from the application of the mutual nearest neighbour criterion (\ie, one-to-one assignment) in patch-level matching.Accordingly, we introduce AdaMatcher, which first accomplishes the feature correlation and co-visible area estimation through an elaborate feature interaction module, then performs adaptive assignment on patch-level matching while estimating the scales between images, and finally refines the co-visible matches through scale alignment and sub-pixel regression module.Extensive experiments show that AdaMatcher outperforms solid baselines and achieves state-of-the-art results on many downstream tasks. Additionally, the adaptive assignment and sub-pixel refinement module can be used as a refinement network for other matching methods, such as SuperGlue, to boost their performance further. The code will be publicly available at https://github.com/AbyssGaze/AdaMatcher.

Lifetime-based Optimization for Simulating Quantum Circuits on a New Sunway Supercomputer

High-performance classical simulator for quantum circuits, in particular the tensor network contraction algorithm, has become an important tool for the validation of noisy quantum computing. In order to address the memory limitations, the slicing technique is used to reduce the tensor dimensions, but it could also lead to additional computation overhead that greatly slows down the overall performance. This paper proposes novel lifetime-based methods to reduce the slicing overhead and improve the computing efficiency, including an interpretation method to deal with slicing overhead, an in-place slicing strategy to find the smallest slicing set and an adaptive tensor network contraction path refiner customized for Sunway architecture. Experiments show that in most cases the slicing overhead with our in-place slicing strategy would be less than the cotengra, which is the most used graph path optimization software at present. Finally, the resulting simulation time is reduced to 96.1s for the Sycamore quantum processor RQC, with a sustainable single-precision performance of 308.6Pflops using over 41M cores to generate 1M correlated samples, which is more than 5 times performance improvement compared to 60.4 Pflops in 2021 Gordon Bell Prize work.

A Unified BEV Model for Joint Learning of 3D Local Features and Overlap Estimation

Pairwise point cloud registration is a critical task for many applications, which heavily depends on finding correct correspondences from the two point clouds. However, the low overlap between input point clouds causes the registration to fail easily, leading to mistaken overlapping and mismatched correspondences, especially in scenes where non-overlapping regions contain similar structures. In this paper, we present a unified bird's-eye view (BEV) model for jointly learning of 3D local features and overlap estimation to fulfill pairwise registration and loop closure. Feature description is performed by a sparse UNet-like network based on BEV representation, and 3D keypoints are extracted by a detection head for 2D locations, and a regression head for heights. For overlap detection, a cross-attention module is applied for interacting contextual information of input point clouds, followed by a classification head to estimate the overlapping region. We evaluate our unified model extensively on the KITTI dataset and Apollo-SouthBay dataset. The experiments demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms existing methods on overlap estimation, especially in scenes with small overlaps. It also achieves top registration performance on both datasets in terms of translation and rotation errors.

Medical Phrase Grounding with Region-Phrase Context Contrastive Alignment

Medical phrase grounding (MPG) aims to locate the most relevant region in a medical image, given a phrase query describing certain medical findings, which is an important task for medical image analysis and radiological diagnosis. However, existing visual grounding methods rely on general visual features for identifying objects in natural images and are not capable of capturing the subtle and specialized features of medical findings, leading to sub-optimal performance in MPG. In this paper, we propose MedRPG, an end-to-end approach for MPG. MedRPG is built on a lightweight vision-language transformer encoder and directly predicts the box coordinates of mentioned medical findings, which can be trained with limited medical data, making it a valuable tool in medical image analysis. To enable MedRPG to locate nuanced medical findings with better region-phrase correspondences, we further propose Tri-attention Context contrastive alignment (TaCo). TaCo seeks context alignment to pull both the features and attention outputs of relevant region-phrase pairs close together while pushing those of irrelevant regions far away. This ensures that the final box prediction depends more on its finding-specific regions and phrases. Experimental results on three MPG datasets demonstrate that our MedRPG outperforms state-of-the-art visual grounding approaches by a large margin. Additionally, the proposed TaCo strategy is effective in enhancing finding localization ability and reducing spurious region-phrase correlations.
