Localizing Anatomical Landmarks in Ocular Images using Zoom-In Attentive Networks

Localizing anatomical landmarks are important tasks in medical image analysis. However, the landmarks to be localized often lack prominent visual features. Their locations are elusive and easily confused with the background, and thus precise localization highly depends on the context formed by their surrounding areas. In addition, the required precision is usually higher than segmentation and object detection tasks. Therefore, localization has its unique challenges different from segmentation or detection. In this paper, we propose a zoom-in attentive network (ZIAN) for anatomical landmark localization in ocular images. First, a coarse-to-fine, or "zoom-in" strategy is utilized to learn the contextualized features in different scales. Then, an attentive fusion module is adopted to aggregate multi-scale features, which consists of 1) a co-attention network with a multiple regions-of-interest (ROIs) scheme that learns complementary features from the multiple ROIs, 2) an attention-based fusion module which integrates the multi-ROIs features and non-ROI features. We evaluated ZIAN on two open challenge tasks, i.e., the fovea localization in fundus images and scleral spur localization in AS-OCT images. Experiments show that ZIAN achieves promising performances and outperforms state-of-the-art localization methods. The source code and trained models of ZIAN are available at https://github.com/leixiaofeng-astar/OMIA9-ZIAN.

An Arbitrarily High Order Unfitted Finite Element Method for Elliptic Interface Problems with Automatic Mesh Generation

We consider the reliable implementation of high-order unfitted finite element methods on Cartesian meshes with hanging nodes for elliptic interface problems. We construct a reliable algorithm to merge small interface elements with their surrounding elements to automatically generate the finite element mesh whose elements are large with respect to both domains. We propose new basis functions for the interface elements to control the growth of the condition number of the stiffness matrix in terms of the finite element approximation order, the number of elements of the mesh, and the interface deviation which quantifies the mesh resolution of the geometry of the interface. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the competitive performance of the method.

AdaCM: Adaptive ColorMLP for Real-Time Universal Photo-realistic Style Transfer

Photo-realistic style transfer aims at migrating the artistic style from an exemplar style image to a content image, producing a result image without spatial distortions or unrealistic artifacts. Impressive results have been achieved by recent deep models. However, deep neural network based methods are too expensive to run in real-time. Meanwhile, bilateral grid based methods are much faster but still contain artifacts like overexposure. In this work, we propose the \textbf{Adaptive ColorMLP (AdaCM)}, an effective and efficient framework for universal photo-realistic style transfer. First, we find the complex non-linear color mapping between input and target domain can be efficiently modeled by a small multi-layer perceptron (ColorMLP) model. Then, in \textbf{AdaCM}, we adopt a CNN encoder to adaptively predict all parameters for the ColorMLP conditioned on each input content and style image pair. Experimental results demonstrate that AdaCM can generate vivid and high-quality stylization results. Meanwhile, our AdaCM is ultrafast and can process a 4K resolution image in 6ms on one V100 GPU.

Mixed Valence Pseudobrookite Al$_{1.75}$Ti$_{1.25}$O$_5$: High Temperature Phase Transitions, Magnetism and Resistivity

Dark blue single crystals of Al$_{1.75}^{3+}$ Ti$_{1.0}^{4+}$ Ti$_{0.25}^{3+}$O$_5$ were grown with a novel synthesis method based on the reaction of a Ti3+/Ti4+ containing langbeinite melt and Al$_2$O$_3$. The obtained needles crystallize in the pseudobrookite structure and undergo two reversible phase transitions from orthorhombic Cmcm to C2/m first and subsequently to C2 symmetry. Like the known aluminum titanate pseudobrookites, anistropic thermal expansion is observed. The temperature evolution of the crystal structure reveals some insights into the mechanism leading to the decomposition of the Al$_{1.75}$Ti$_{1.25}$O$_5$ above 725$^\circ$C. The magnetic and electrical properties are discussed and compared to other reported aluminum titanate pseudobrookites.

Layer-refined Graph Convolutional Networks for Recommendation

Recommendation models utilizing Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance, as they can integrate both the node information and the topological structure of the user-item interaction graph. However, these GCN-based recommendation models not only suffer from over-smoothing when stacking too many layers but also bear performance degeneration resulting from the existence of noise in user-item interactions. In this paper, we first identify a recommendation dilemma of over-smoothing and solution collapsing in current GCN-based models. Specifically, these models usually aggregate all layer embeddings for node updating and achieve their best recommendation performance within a few layers because of over-smoothing. Conversely, if we place learnable weights on layer embeddings for node updating, the weight space will always collapse to a fixed point, at which the weighting of the ego layer almost holds all. We propose a layer-refined GCN model, dubbed LayerGCN, that refines layer representations during information propagation and node updating of GCN. Moreover, previous GCN-based recommendation models aggregate all incoming information from neighbors without distinguishing the noise nodes, which deteriorates the recommendation performance. Our model further prunes the edges of the user-item interaction graph following a degree-sensitive probability instead of the uniform distribution. Experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art models significantly on four public datasets with fast training convergence. The implementation code of the proposed method is available at https://github.com/enoche/ImRec.

On the Nonexistence of a Strong Minimal Pair

Two nonzero recursively enumerable (r.e.) degrees $\mathbf{a}$ and $\mathbf{b}$ form a strong minimal pair if $\mathbf{a} \wedge \mathbf{b}=\mathbf{0}$ and $\mathbf{b}\vee \mathbf{x}\geq \mathbf{a}$ for any nonzero r.e. degree $\mathbf{x}\leq \mathbf{a}$. We prove that there is no strong minimal pair in the r.e. degrees. Our construction goes beyond the usual $\mathbf{0}'''$-priority arguments and we give some evidence to show that it needs $\mathbf{0}^{(4)}$-priority arguments.

Inductive Graph Transformer for Delivery Time Estimation

Providing accurate estimated time of package delivery on users' purchasing pages for e-commerce platforms is of great importance to their purchasing decisions and post-purchase experiences. Although this problem shares some common issues with the conventional estimated time of arrival (ETA), it is more challenging with the following aspects: 1) Inductive inference. Models are required to predict ETA for orders with unseen retailers and addresses; 2) High-order interaction of order semantic information. Apart from the spatio-temporal features, the estimated time also varies greatly with other factors, such as the packaging efficiency of retailers, as well as the high-order interaction of these factors. In this paper, we propose an inductive graph transformer (IGT) that leverages raw feature information and structural graph data to estimate package delivery time. Different from previous graph transformer architectures, IGT adopts a decoupled pipeline and trains transformer as a regression function that can capture the multiplex information from both raw feature and dense embeddings encoded by a graph neural network (GNN). In addition, we further simplify the GNN structure by removing its non-linear activation and the learnable linear transformation matrix. The reduced parameter search space and linear information propagation in the simplified GNN enable the IGT to be applied in large-scale industrial scenarios. Experiments on real-world logistics datasets show that our proposed model can significantly outperform the state-of-the-art methods on estimation of delivery time. Deep Domain Adversarial Adaptation for Photon-efficient Imaging

Photon-efficient imaging with the single-photon light detection and ranging (LiDAR) captures the three-dimensional (3D) structure of a scene by only a few detected signal photons per pixel. However, the existing computational methods for photon-efficient imaging are pre-tuned on a restricted scenario or trained on simulated datasets. When applied to realistic scenarios whose signal-to-background ratios (SBR) and other hardware-specific properties differ from those of the original task, the model performance often significantly deteriorates. In this paper, we present a domain adversarial adaptation design to alleviate this domain shift problem by exploiting unlabeled real-world data, with significant resource savings. This method demonstrates superior performance on simulated and real-world experiments using our home-built up-conversion single-photon imaging system, which provides an efficient approach to bypass the lack of ground-truth depth information in implementing computational imaging algorithms for realistic applications.

Visual-based Kinematics and Pose Estimation for Skid-Steering Robots

To build commercial robots, skid-steering mechanical design is of increased popularity due to its manufacturing simplicity and unique mechanism. However, these also cause significant challenges on software and algorithm design, especially for the pose estimation (i.e., determining the robot's rotation and position) of skid-steering robots, since they change their orientation with an inevitable skid. To tackle this problem, we propose a probabilistic sliding-window estimator dedicated to skid-steering robots, using measurements from a monocular camera, the wheel encoders, and optionally an inertial measurement unit (IMU). Specifically, we explicitly model the kinematics of skid-steering robots by both track instantaneous centers of rotation (ICRs) and correction factors, which are capable of compensating for the complexity of track-to-terrain interaction, the imperfectness of mechanical design, terrain conditions and smoothness, etc. To prevent performance reduction in robots' long-term missions, the time- and location- varying kinematic parameters are estimated online along with pose estimation states in a tightly-coupled manner. More importantly, we conduct in-depth observability analysis for different sensors and design configurations in this paper, which provides us with theoretical tools in making the correct choice when building real commercial robots. In our experiments, we validate the proposed method by both simulation tests and real-world experiments, which demonstrate that our method outperforms competing methods by wide margins.

Intrinsic ferromagnetic axion states and a single pair of Weyl fermions in the stable-state Mn\emph{X}$_{2}$\emph{B}$_{2}$\emph{T}$_{6}$-family materials

The intrinsic ferromagnetic (FM) axion insulators and Weyl semimetals (WSMs) with only single pair of Weyl points have drawn intensive attention but so far remain rare and elusive in real materials. Here, we propose a new class of Mn\emph{X}$_{2}$\emph{B}$_{2}$\emph{T}$_{6}$-B (\emph{X}=Ge, Sn, or Pb; \emph{B}=Sb or Bi; \emph{T}=Se or Te) family that is the stable structural form of this system. We find that the Mn\emph{X}$_{2}$\emph{B}$_{2}$\emph{T}$_{6}$-B family has not only the intrinsic FM axion insulators MnGe$_{2}$Bi$_{2}$Te$_{6}$-B, MnSn$_{2}$Bi$_{2}$Te$_{6}$-B, and MnPb$_{2}$Bi$_{2}$Te$_{6}$-B, but also the intrinsic WSM MnSn$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{6}$-B with only a single pair of Weyl points. Thus, the Mn\emph{X}$_{2}$\emph{B}$_{2}$\emph{T}$_{6}$-B family can provide an ideal platform to explore the exotic topological magnetoelectric effect and the intrinsic properties related to Weyl points.

Global Spectral Filter Memory Network for Video Object Segmentation

This paper studies semi-supervised video object segmentation through boosting intra-frame interaction. Recent memory network-based methods focus on exploiting inter-frame temporal reference while paying little attention to intra-frame spatial dependency. Specifically, these segmentation model tends to be susceptible to interference from unrelated nontarget objects in a certain frame. To this end, we propose Global Spectral Filter Memory network (GSFM), which improves intra-frame interaction through learning long-term spatial dependencies in the spectral domain. The key components of GSFM is 2D (inverse) discrete Fourier transform for spatial information mixing. Besides, we empirically find low frequency feature should be enhanced in encoder (backbone) while high frequency for decoder (segmentation head). We attribute this to semantic information extracting role for encoder and fine-grained details highlighting role for decoder. Thus, Low (High) Frequency Module is proposed to fit this circumstance. Extensive experiments on the popular DAVIS and YouTube-VOS benchmarks demonstrate that GSFM noticeably outperforms the baseline method and achieves state-of-the-art performance. Besides, extensive analysis shows that the proposed modules are reasonable and of great generalization ability. Our source code is available at https://github.com/workforai/GSFM.

Predictive Edge Caching through Deep Mining of Sequential Patterns in User Content Retrievals

Edge caching plays an increasingly important role in boosting user content retrieval performance while reducing redundant network traffic. The effectiveness of caching ultimately hinges on the accuracy of predicting content popularity in the near future. However, at the network edge, content popularity can be extremely dynamic due to diverse user content retrieval behaviors and the low-degree of user multiplexing. It's challenging for the traditional reactive caching systems to keep up with the dynamic content popularity patterns. In this paper, we propose a novel Predictive Edge Caching (PEC) system that predicts the future content popularity using fine-grained learning models that mine sequential patterns in user content retrieval behaviors, and opportunistically prefetches contents predicted to be popular in the near future using idle network bandwidth. Through extensive experiments driven by real content retrieval traces, we demonstrate that PEC can adapt to highly dynamic content popularity, and significantly improve cache hit ratio and reduce user content retrieval latency over the state-of-art caching policies. More broadly, our study demonstrates that edge caching performance can be boosted by deep mining of user content retrieval behaviors.

Generative Model Watermarking Based on Human Visual System

Intellectual property protection of deep neural networks is receiving attention from more and more researchers, and the latest research applies model watermarking to generative models for image processing. However, the existing watermarking methods designed for generative models do not take into account the effects of different channels of sample images on watermarking. As a result, the watermarking performance is still limited. To tackle this problem, in this paper, we first analyze the effects of embedding watermark information on different channels. Then, based on the characteristics of human visual system (HVS), we introduce two HVS-based generative model watermarking methods, which are realized in RGB color space and YUV color space respectively. In RGB color space, the watermark is embedded into the R and B channels based on the fact that HVS is more sensitive to G channel. In YUV color space, the watermark is embedded into the DCT domain of U and V channels based on the fact that HVS is more sensitive to brightness changes. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed work, which improves the fidelity of the model to be protected and has good universality compared with previous methods.

Mask-Guided Image Person Removal with Data Synthesis

As a special case of common object removal, image person removal is playing an increasingly important role in social media and criminal investigation domains. Due to the integrity of person area and the complexity of human posture, person removal has its own dilemmas. In this paper, we propose a novel idea to tackle these problems from the perspective of data synthesis. Concerning the lack of dedicated dataset for image person removal, two dataset production methods are proposed to automatically generate images, masks and ground truths respectively. Then, a learning framework similar to local image degradation is proposed so that the masks can be used to guide the feature extraction process and more texture information can be gathered for final prediction. A coarse-to-fine training strategy is further applied to refine the details. The data synthesis and learning framework combine well with each other. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of our method quantitatively and qualitatively, and the trained network proves to have good generalization ability either on real or synthetic images.

UniInst: Unique Representation for End-to-End Instance Segmentation

Existing instance segmentation methods have achieved impressive performance but still suffer from a common dilemma: redundant representations (e.g., multiple boxes, grids, and anchor points) are inferred for one instance, which leads to multiple duplicated predictions. Thus, mainstream methods usually rely on a hand-designed non-maximum suppression (NMS) post-processing step to select the optimal prediction result, which hinders end-to-end training. To address this issue, we propose a box-free and NMS-free end-to-end instance segmentation framework, termed UniInst, that yields only one unique representation for each instance. Specifically, we design an instance-aware one-to-one assignment scheme, namely Only Yield One Representation (OYOR), which dynamically assigns one unique representation to each instance according to the matching quality between predictions and ground truths. Then, a novel prediction re-ranking strategy is elegantly integrated into the framework to address the misalignment between the classification score and the mask quality, enabling the learned representation to be more discriminative. With these techniques, our UniInst, the first FCN-based box-free and NMS-free instance segmentation framework, achieves competitive performance, e.g., 39.0 mask AP using ResNet-50-FPN and 40.2 mask AP using ResNet-101-FPN, against mainstream methods on COCO test-dev 2017. Moreover, the proposed instance-aware method is robust to occlusion scenes, outperforming common baselines by remarkable mask AP on the heavily-occluded OCHuman benchmark. Exemplar-Based Image Colorization with A Learning Framework

Image learning and colorization are hot spots in multimedia domain. Inspired by the learning capability of humans, in this paper, we propose an automatic colorization method with a learning framework. This method can be viewed as a hybrid of exemplar-based and learning-based method, and it decouples the colorization process and learning process so as to generate various color styles for the same gray image. The matching process in the exemplar-based colorization method can be regarded as a parameterized function, and we employ a large amount of color images as the training samples to fit the parameters. During the training process, the color images are the ground truths, and we learn the optimal parameters for the matching process by minimizing the errors in terms of the parameters for the matching function. To deal with images with various compositions, a global feature is introduced, which can be used to classify the images with respect to their compositions, and then learn the optimal matching parameters for each image category individually. What's more, a spatial consistency based post-processing is design to smooth the extracted color information from the reference image to remove matching errors. Extensive experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the method, and it achieves comparable performance against the state-of-the-art colorization algorithms.

Class-Aware Contrastive Semi-Supervised Learning

Pseudo-label-based semi-supervised learning (SSL) has achieved great success on raw data utilization. However, its training procedure suffers from confirmation bias due to the noise contained in self-generated artificial labels. Moreover, the model's judgment becomes noisier in real-world applications with extensive out-of-distribution data. To address this issue, we propose a general method named Class-aware Contrastive Semi-Supervised Learning (CCSSL), which is a drop-in helper to improve the pseudo-label quality and enhance the model's robustness in the real-world setting. Rather than treating real-world data as a union set, our method separately handles reliable in-distribution data with class-wise clustering for blending into downstream tasks and noisy out-of-distribution data with image-wise contrastive for better generalization. Furthermore, by applying target re-weighting, we successfully emphasize clean label learning and simultaneously reduce noisy label learning. Despite its simplicity, our proposed CCSSL has significant performance improvements over the state-of-the-art SSL methods on the standard datasets CIFAR100 and STL10. On the real-world dataset Semi-iNat 2021, we improve FixMatch by 9.80% and CoMatch by 3.18%. Code is available https://github.com/TencentYoutuResearch/Classification-SemiCLS.

Towards Sharp Analysis for Distributed Learning with Random Features

In recent studies, the generalization properties for distributed learning and random features assumed the existence of the target concept over the hypothesis space. However, this strict condition is not applicable to the more common non-attainable case. In this paper, using refined proof techniques, we first extend the optimal rates for distributed learning with random features to the non-attainable case. Then, we reduce the number of required random features via data-dependent generating strategy, and improve the allowed number of partitions with additional unlabeled data. Theoretical analysis shows these techniques remarkably reduce computational cost while preserving the optimal generalization accuracy under standard assumptions. Finally, we conduct several experiments on both simulated and real-world datasets, and the empirical results validate our theoretical findings.
