Hybrid Quasi-Single Field Inflation

The decay of massive particles during inflation generates characteristic signals in the squeezed limit of the primordial bispectrum. These signals are in particular distinctive in the regime of the quasi-single field inflation, where particles are oscillating with masses comparable to the Hubble scale. We apply the investigation to a class of scalar particles that experience a so-called waterfall phase transition in the isocurvature direction driven by the symmetry-breaking mechanism based on the hybrid inflation scenario. With a time-varying mass, a novel shape of oscillatory bispectrum is presented as the signature of a waterfall phase transition during inflation.

Connections between Minkowski and Cosmological Correlation Functions

We show how cosmological correlation functions of massless fields can be rewritten in terms of Minkowski correlation functions, by extracting symmetry-breaking operators from the cosmological correlators. This technique simplifies some cosmological calculations. Also, known properties of Minkowski correlation functions can be translated to non-trivial properties of cosmological correlations. To illustrate this idea, inflation to Minkowski and matter bounce to Minkowski relations are presented for the interactions of general single field inflation. And a Minkowski recursion relation is translated to a novel relation for inflation.

Review of Smart Meter Data Analytics: Applications, Methodologies, and Challenges

The widespread popularity of smart meters enables an immense amount of fine-grained electricity consumption data to be collected. Meanwhile, the deregulation of the power industry, particularly on the delivery side, has continuously been moving forward worldwide. How to employ massive smart meter data to promote and enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the power grid is a pressing issue. To date, substantial works have been conducted on smart meter data analytics. To provide a comprehensive overview of the current research and to identify challenges for future research, this paper conducts an application-oriented review of smart meter data analytics. Following the three stages of analytics, namely, descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics, we identify the key application areas as load analysis, load forecasting, and load management. We also review the techniques and methodologies adopted or developed to address each application. In addition, we also discuss some research trends, such as big data issues, novel machine learning technologies, new business models, the transition of energy systems, and data privacy and security.

Combining Probabilistic Load Forecasts

Probabilistic load forecasts provide comprehensive information about future load uncertainties. In recent years, many methodologies and techniques have been proposed for probabilistic load forecasting. Forecast combination, a widely recognized best practice in point forecasting literature, has never been formally adopted to combine probabilistic load forecasts. This paper proposes a constrained quantile regression averaging (CQRA) method to create an improved ensemble from several individual probabilistic forecasts. We formulate the CQRA parameter estimation problem as a linear program with the objective of minimizing the pinball loss, with the constraints that the parameters are nonnegative and summing up to one. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method using two publicly available datasets, the ISO New England data and Irish smart meter data. Comparing with the best individual probabilistic forecast, the ensemble can reduce the pinball score by 4.39% on average. The proposed ensemble also demonstrates superior performance over nine other benchmark ensembles.

Decipher the Three-Dimensional Magnetic Topology of a Great Solar Flare

Three-dimensional magnetic topology of solar flare plays a crucial role in understanding its explosive release of magnetic energy in the corona. However, such three-dimensional coronal magnetic field is still elusive in direct observation. Here we realistically simulate the magnetic evolution during the eruptive process of a great flare, using a numerical magnetohydrodynamic model constrained by observed solar vector magnetogram. The numerical results reveal that the pre-flare corona contains multi-set twisted magnetic flux, which forms a coherent rope during the eruption. The rising flux rope is wrapped by a quasi-separatrix layer, which intersects itself below the rope, forming a hyperbolic flux tube and magnetic reconnection is triggered there. By tracing the footprint of the newly-reconnected field lines, we reproduce both the spatial location and its temporal evolution of flare ribbons with an expected accuracy in comparison of observed images. This scenario strongly confirms the three-dimensional version of standard flare model.

Scale-recurrent Network for Deep Image Deblurring

In single image deblurring, the "coarse-to-fine" scheme, i.e. gradually restoring the sharp image on different resolutions in a pyramid, is very successful in both traditional optimization-based methods and recent neural-network-based approaches. In this paper, we investigate this strategy and propose a Scale-recurrent Network (SRN-DeblurNet) for this deblurring task. Compared with the many recent learning-based approaches in [25], it has a simpler network structure, a smaller number of parameters and is easier to train. We evaluate our method on large-scale deblurring datasets with complex motion. Results show that our method can produce better quality results than state-of-the-arts, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

On the Sobolev-Poincare inequality of CR-manifolds

The purpose is to study the CR-manifold with a contact structure conformal to the Heisenberg group. In our previous work \cite{WY}, we have proved that if the $Q'$-curvature is nonnegative, and the integral of $Q'$-curvature is below the dimensional bound $c_1'$, then we have the isoperimetric inequality. In this paper, we manage to drop the condition on the nonnegativity of the $Q'$-curvature. We prove that the volume form $e^{4u}$ is a strong $A_\infty$ weight. As a corollary, we prove the Sobolev-Poincaré inequality on a class of CR-manifolds with integrable $Q'$-curvature.

Bulk contribution to magnetotransport properties of low defect-density Bi$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulator thin films

An important challenge in the field of topological materials is to carefully disentangle the electronic transport contribution of the topological surface states from that of the bulk. For Bi$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulator samples, bulk single crystals and thin films exposed to air during fabrication processes are known to be bulk conducting, with the chemical potential in the bulk conduction band. For Bi$_2$Te$_3$ thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy, we combine structural characterization (transmission electron microscopy), chemical surface analysis as function of time (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and magnetotransport analysis to understand the low defect density and record high bulk electron mobility once charge is doped into the bulk by surface degradation. Carrier densities and electronic mobilities extracted from the Hall effect and the quantum oscillations are consistent and reveal a large bulk carrier mobility. Because of the cylindrical shape of the bulk Fermi surface, the angle dependence of the bulk magnetoresistance oscillations is two-dimensional in nature.

Warm Quasi-Single Field Inflation

We study quasi-single field inflation with a warm inflation background. The thermal effects at small scales can sufficiently enhance the magnitude of the primordial standard clock signal. This scenario offers us the possibility of probing the UV physics of the very early universe without the exponentially small Boltzmann factor when the mass of the isocurvaton is much heavier than Hubble. The thermal effects at small scales can be studied using the flat space thermal field theory, connected to an effective description using non-Bunch-Davies vacuum at large scales, with large clock signal.

Efficient Charge-Spin Conversion and Magnetization Switching though Rashba Effect at Topological Insulator/Ag Interface

We report the observation of efficient charge-to-spin conversion in the three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3 and Ag bilayer by the spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance technique. The spin orbit torque ratio in the Bi2Se3/Ag/CoFeB heterostructure shows a significant enhancement as the Ag thickness increases to ~2 nm and reaches a value of 0.5 for 5 nm Ag, which is ~3 times higher than that of Bi2Se3/CoFeB at room temperature. The observation reveals the interfacial effect of Bi2Se3/Ag exceeds that of the topological surface states (TSS) in the Bi2Se3 layer and plays a dominant role in the charge-to-spin conversion in the Bi2Se3/Ag/CoFeB system. Based on the first-principles calculations, we attribute our observation to the large Rashba-splitting bands which wrap the TSS band and has the same net spin polarization direction as TSS of Bi2Se3. Subsequently, we demonstrate for the first time the Rashba induced magnetization switching in Bi2Se3/Ag/Py with a low current density of 5.8 X 10^5 A/cm2.

Enabling Work-conserving Bandwidth Guarantees for Multi-tenant Datacenters via Dynamic Tenant-Queue Binding

Today's cloud networks are shared among many tenants. Bandwidth guarantees and work conservation are two key properties to ensure predictable performance for tenant applications and high network utilization for providers. Despite significant efforts, very little prior work can really achieve both properties simultaneously even some of them claimed so. In this paper, we present QShare, an in-network based solution to achieve bandwidth guarantees and work conservation simultaneously. QShare leverages weighted fair queuing on commodity switches to slice network bandwidth for tenants, and solves the challenge of queue scarcity through balanced tenant placement and dynamic tenant-queue binding. QShare is readily implementable with existing switching chips. We have implemented a QShare prototype and evaluated it via both testbed experiments and simulations. Our results show that QShare ensures bandwidth guarantees while driving network utilization to over 91% even under unpredictable traffic demands.

Implementing Quantum Search Algorithm with Metamaterials

Metamaterials, artificially structured electromagnetic (EM) materials, have enabled the realization of many unconventional electromagnetic properties not found in nature, such as negative refractive index, magnetic response, invisibility cloaking and so on. Based on these man-made materials with novel EM properties, various devices have been designed and realized. However, quantum analog devices based on metamaterials have not been achieved so far. Here we designed and printed metamaterials to perform quantum search algorithm. The structures, comprising of an array of two-dimensional (2D) sub-wavelength air holes with different radii perforated on the dielectric layer, have been fabricated by using 3D printing technique. When an incident wave enters in the designed metamaterials, the profile of beam wavefront is processed iteratively as it propagates through the metamaterial periodically. After roundtrips, precisely the same as the efficiency of quantum search algorithm, searched items will be found with the incident wave all focusing on the marked positions. Such a metamaterial-based quantum searching simulator may lead to remarkable achievements in wave-based signal processors.

Schwinger-Keldysh Diagrammatics for Primordial Perturbations

We present a systematic introduction to the diagrammatic method for practical calculations in inflationary cosmology, based on Schwinger-Keldysh path integral formalism. We show in particular that the diagrammatic rules can be derived directly from a classical Lagrangian even in the presence of derivative couplings. Furthermore, we use quasi-single-field inflation as an example to show how this formalism, combined with the trick of mixed propagator, can significantly simplify the calculation of some in-in correlation functions. The resulting bispectrum includes the lighter scalar case ($m<3H/2$) that has been previously studied, and the heavier scalar case ($m>3H/2$) that has not been explicitly computed for this model. The latter provides a concrete example of quantum primordial standard clocks, in which the clock signals can be observably large.

Computing LPMLN Using ASP and MLN Solvers

LPMLN is a recent addition to probabilistic logic programming languages. Its main idea is to overcome the rigid nature of the stable model semantics by assigning a weight to each rule in a way similar to Markov Logic is defined. We present two implementations of LPMLN, $\text{LPMLN2ASP}$ and $\text{LPMLN2MLN}$. System $\text{LPMLN2ASP}$ translates LPMLN programs into the input language of answer set solver $\text{CLINGO}$, and using weak constraints and stable model enumeration, it can compute most probable stable models as well as exact conditional and marginal probabilities. System $\text{LPMLN2MLN}$ translates LPMLN programs into the input language of Markov Logic solvers, such as $\text{ALCHEMY}$, $\text{TUFFY}$, and $\text{ROCKIT}$, and allows for performing approximate probabilistic inference on LPMLN programs. We also demonstrate the usefulness of the LPMLN systems for computing other languages, such as ProbLog and Pearl's Causal Models, that are shown to be translatable into LPMLN. Strongly Coupled Quasi-Single Field Inflation

We study the power spectrum of quasi-single field inflation where strong coupling is considered. The contribution from the massive propagator can be divided into local and non-local contributions. The local one is the leading contribution and is power-law suppressed as a function of mass, while the non-local contribution is exponentially suppressed in the large mass limit. For the local contribution, it is possible to use the effective field theory approach to study the power spectrum in the strongly coupled region of the parameter space. For the non-local contribution, we developed a partial effective field theory method to simplify the calculation: When there are multiple massive propagators, one can fully compute it after integrating out all but one massive propagator by effective field theory. The result retains the "standard clock" signal, which is interesting for probing the expansion history of the primordial universe and the physics of a "cosmological collider". The error involved compared to the full calculation is power law suppressed by the effective mass of the heavy field.

First-Principles Thermodynamic Theory of Seebeck Coefficients

Thermoelectric effects, measured by the Seebeck coefficients, refer to the phenomena in which a temperature difference or gradient imposed across a thermoelectric material induces an electrical potential difference or gradient, and vice versa, enabling the direct conversion of thermal and electric energies. All existing understanding and first-principles calculations of Seebeck coefficients have been based on the Boltzmann kinetic transport theory. Here we demonstrate that the Seebeck coefficient is a well-defined thermodynamic quantity that can be determined from the change in the chemical potential of electrons induced by the temperature change and thus can be efficiently computed solely based on the electronic density of states through first-principles calculations at different temperatures. The proposed approach is demonstrated using the prototype PbTe and SnSe thermoelectric materials. The proposed thermodynamic approach dramatically simplifies the calculations of Seebeck coefficients, making it possible to search for high performance thermoelectric materials using high-throughput first-principles calculations.

Room Temperature Giant Charge-to-Spin Conversion at SrTiO3/LaAlO3 Oxide Interface

Two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at the interface between SrTiO3 (STO) and LaAlO3 (LAO) insulating layer is supposed to possess strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. To date, the inverse Edelstein effect (i.e. spin-to-charge conversion) in the 2DEG layer is reported. However, the direct effect of charge-to-spin conversion, an essential ingredient for spintronic devices in a current induced spin-orbit torque scheme, has not been demonstrated yet. Here we show, for the first time, a highly efficient spin generation with the efficiency of ~6.3 in the STO/LAO/CoFeB structure at room temperature by using spin torque ferromagnetic resonance. In addition, we suggest that the spin transmission through the LAO layer at high temperature range is attributed to the inelastic tunneling via localized states in the LAO band gap. Our findings may lead to potential applications in the oxide insulator based spintronic devices.
