Inference-Based Similarity Search in Randomized Montgomery Domains for Privacy-Preserving Biometric Identification

Similarity search is essential to many important applications and often involves searching at scale on high-dimensional data based on their similarity to a query. In biometric applications, recent vulnerability studies have shown that adversarial machine learning can compromise biometric recognition systems by exploiting the biometric similarity information. Existing methods for biometric privacy protection are in general based on pairwise matching of secured biometric templates and have inherent limitations in search efficiency and scalability. In this paper, we propose an inference-based framework for privacy-preserving similarity search in Hamming space. Our approach builds on an obfuscated distance measure that can conceal Hamming distance in a dynamic interval. Such a mechanism enables us to systematically design statistically reliable methods for retrieving most likely candidates without knowing the exact distance values. We further propose to apply Montgomery multiplication for generating search indexes that can withstand adversarial similarity analysis, and show that information leakage in randomized Montgomery domains can be made negligibly small. Our experiments on public biometric datasets demonstrate that the inference-based approach can achieve a search accuracy close to the best performance possible with secure computation methods, but the associated cost is reduced by orders of magnitude compared to cryptographic primitives.

Data-Driven Power Flow Linearization: A Regression Approach

The linearization of a power flow (PF) model is an important approach for simplifying and accelerating the calculation of a power system's control, operation, and optimization. Traditional model-based methods derive linearized PF models by making approximations in the analytical PF model according to the physical characteristics of the power system. Today, more measurements of the power system are available and thus facilitate data-driven approaches beyond model-driven approaches. This work studies a linearized PF model through a data-driven approach. Both a forward regression model ((P, Q) as a function of (theta, V)) and an inverse regression model ((theta, V) as a function of (P, Q)) are proposed. Partial least square (PLS)- and Bayesian linear regression (BLR)-based algorithms are designed to address data collinearity and avoid overfitting. The proposed approach is tested on a series of IEEE standard cases, which include both meshed transmission grids and radial distribution grids, with both Monte Carlo simulated data and public testing data. The results show that the proposed approach can realize a higher calculation accuracy than model-based approaches can. The results also demonstrate that the obtained regression parameter matrices of data-driven models reflect power system physics by demonstrating similar patterns with some power system matrices (e.g., the admittance matrix).

Stability of the Superposition of a Viscous Contact Wave with two Rarefaction Waves to the bipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann System

We investigate the nonlinear stability of the superposition of a viscous contact wave and two rarefaction waves for one-dimensional bipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system, which can be used to describe the transportation of charged particles under the additional electrostatic potential force. Based on a new micro-macro type decomposition around the local Maxwellian related to the bipolar VPB system in our previous work [26], we prove that the superposition of a viscous contact wave and two rarefaction waves is time-asymptotically stable to 1D bipolar VPB system under some smallness conditions on the initial perturbations and wave strength, which implies that this typical composite wave pattern is nonlinearly stable under the combined effects of the binary collisions, the electrostatic potential force, and the mutual interactions of different charged particles. Note that this is the first result about the nonlinear stability of the combination of two different wave patterns for the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system.

Stability of nonlinear wave patterns to the bipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system

The main purpose of the present paper is to investigate the nonlinear stability of viscous shock waves and rarefaction wave for bipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system. To this end, motivated by the micro-macro decomposition to the Boltzmann equation in [21, 23], we first set up a new micro-macro decomposition around the local Maxwellian related to the bipolar VPB system and give a unified framework to study the nonlinear stability of the basic wave patterns to the system. Then, as the applications of this new decomposition, the time-asymptotic stability of the two typical nonlinear wave patterns, viscous shock waves and rarefaction wave, are proved for the 1D bipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system. More precisely, it is first proved that the linear superposition of two Boltzmann shock profiles in the first and third characteristic fields is nonlinearly stable to the 1D bipolar VPB system up to some suitable shifts without the zero macroscopic mass conditions on the initial perturbations. Then the time-asymptotic stability of rarefaction wave fan to compressible Euler equations is proved to 1D bipolar VPB system. These two results are concerned with the nonlinear stability of wave patterns for Boltzmann equation coupled with additional (electric) forces, which together with spectral analysis made in [18] sheds light on understanding the complicated dynamic behaviors around the wave patterns in the transportation of charged particles under the binary collisions, mutual interactions, and the effect of the electrostatic potential forces.

Reconstruction of a Large-scale Pre-flare Coronal Current Sheet Associated with an Homologous X-shaped Flare

As a fundamental magnetic structure in the solar corona, electric current sheets (CSs) can form either prior to or during solar flare, and they are essential for magnetic energy dissipation in the solar corona by enabling magnetic reconnection. However static reconstruction of CS is rare, possibly due to limitation inherent in available coronal field extrapolation codes. Here we present the reconstruction of a large-scale pre-flare CS in solar active region 11967 using an MHD-relaxation model constrained by SDO/HMI vector magnetogram. The CS is found to be associated with a set of peculiar homologous flares that exhibit unique X-shaped ribbons and loops occurring in a quadrupolar magnetic configuration. This is evidenced by that the field lines traced from the CS to the photosphere form an X shape which nearly precisely reproduces the shape of the observed flare ribbons, suggesting that the flare is a product of the dissipation of the CS through reconnection. The CS forms in a hyperbolic flux tube, which is an intersection of two quasi-separatrix layers. The recurrence of the X-shaped flares might be attributed to the repetitive formation and dissipation of the CS, as driven by the photospheric footpoint motions. These results demonstrate the power of data-constrained MHD model in reproducing CS in the corona as well as providing insight into the magnetic mechanism of solar flares.

Almost Automorphically and Almost Periodically Forced Circle Flows of Almost Periodic Parabolic Equations on S^1

We consider the skew-product semiflow which is generated by a scalar reaction-diffusion equation \begin{equation*} u_{t}=u_{xx}+f(t,u,u_{x}),\,\,t>0,\,x\in S^{1}=\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z}, \end{equation*} where $f$ is uniformly almost periodic in $t$. The structure of the minimal set $M$ is thoroughly investigated under the assumption that the center space $V^c(M)$ associated with $M$ is no more than $2$-dimensional. Such situation naturally occurs while, for instance, $M$ is hyperbolic or uniquely ergodic. It is shown in this paper that $M$ is a $1$-cover of the hull $H(f)$ provided that $M$ is hyperbolic (equivalently, ${\rm dim}V^c(M)=0$). If ${\rm dim}V^c(M)=1$ (resp. ${\rm dim}V^c(M)=2$ with ${\rm dim}V^u(M)$ being odd), then either $M$ is an almost $1$-cover of $H(f)$ and topologically conjugate to a minimal flow in $\mathbb{R}\times H(f)$; or $M$ can be (resp. residually) embedded into an almost periodically (resp. almost automorphically) forced circle-flow $S^1\times H(f)$. When $f(t,u,u_x)=f(t,u,-u_x)$ (which includes the case $f=f(t,u)$), it is proved that any minimal set $M$ is an almost $1$-cover of $H(f)$. In particular, any hyperbolic minimal set $M$ is a $1$-cover of $H(f)$. Furthermore, if ${\rm dim}V^c(M)=1$, then $M$ is either a $1$-cover of $H(f)$ or is topologically conjugate to a minimal flow in $\mathbb{R}\times H(f)$. For the general spatially-dependent nonlinearity $f=f(t,x,u,u_{x})$, we show that any stable or linearly stable minimal invariant set $M$ is residually embedded into $\mathbb{R}^2\times H(f)$.

Asymptotic normality of Laplacian coefficients of graphs

Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices and let $$C(G;x)=\sum_{k=0}^n(-1)^{n-k}c(G,k)x^k$$ denote the Laplacian characteristic polynomial of $G$. Then if the size $|E(G)|$ is large compared to the maximum degree $Δ(G)$, Laplacian coefficients $c(G,k)$ are approximately normally distributed (by central and local limit theorems). We show that Laplacian coefficients of the paths, the cycles, the stars, the wheels and regular graphs of degree $d$ are approximately normally distributed respectively. We also point out that Laplacian coefficients of the complete graphs and the complete bipartite graphs are approximately Poisson distributed respectively.

Room temperature magnetization switching in topological insulator-ferromagnet heterostructures by spin-orbit torques

Topological insulators (TIs) with spin momentum locked topological surface states (TSS) are expected to exhibit a giant spin-orbit torque (SOT) in the TI/ferromagnet systems. To date, the TI SOT driven magnetization switching is solely reported in a Cr doped TI at 1.9 K. Here, we directly show giant SOT driven magnetization switching in a Bi2Se3/NiFe heterostructure at room temperature captured using a magneto-optic Kerr effect microscope. We identify a large charge to spin conversion efficiency of ~1-1.75 in the thin TI films, where the TSS is dominant. In addition, we find the current density required for the magnetization switching is extremely low, ~6x10^5 A cm-2, which is one to two orders of magnitude smaller than that with heavy metals. Our demonstration of room temperature magnetization switching of a conventional 3d ferromagnet using Bi2Se3 may lead to potential innovations in TI based spintronic applications.

On the Effective Field Theory for Quasi-Single Field Inflation

We study the effective field theory (EFT) description of the virtual particle effects in quasi-single field inflation, which unifies the previous results on large mass and large mixing cases. By using a horizon crossing approximation and matching with known limits, approximate expressions for the power spectrum and the spectral index are obtained. The error of the approximate solution is within 10% in dominate parts of the parameter space, which corresponds to less-than-0.1% error in the $n_s$-$r$ diagram. The quasi-single field corrections on the $n_s$-$r$ diagram are plotted for a few inflation models. Especially, the quasi-single field correction drives $m^2ϕ^2$ inflation to the best fit region on the $n_s$-$r$ diagram, with an amount of equilateral non-Gaussianity which can be tested in future experiments.

Effective Blog Pages Extractor for Better UGC Accessing

Blog is becoming an increasingly popular media for information publishing. Besides the main content, most of blog pages nowadays also contain noisy information such as advertisements etc. Removing these unrelated elements can improves user experience, but also can better adapt the content to various devices such as mobile phones. Though template-based extractors are highly accurate, they may incur expensive cost in that a large number of template need to be developed and they will fail once the template is updated. To address these issues, we present a novel template-independent content extractor for blog pages. First, we convert a blog page into a DOM-Tree, where all elements including the title and body blocks in a page correspond to subtrees. Then we construct subtree candidate set for the title and the body blocks respectively, and extract both spatial and content features for elements contained in the subtree. SVM classifiers for the title and the body blocks are trained using these features. Finally, the classifiers are used to extract the main content from blog pages. We test our extractor on 2,250 blog pages crawled from nine blog sites with obviously different styles and templates. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of our extractor.

A First-principles approach to predict Seebeck coefficients: Application to La3-xTe4

Theoretical descriptions of the Seebeck coefficient in terms of the differential electrical conductivity given by Cutler and Mott is the foundation of later works in terms of transmission function from the thermoelectric transport theory. On the other hand, recent studies in the literature have shown the relation between the Seebeck coefficient and chemical potential of electrons. In this work, this relation is rigorously derived from fundamental thermodynamics, and an formalism for the parameter-free calculation of the Seebeck coefficient based on the electronic density-of-states from first-principles calculations is presented. Numerical results are given using the n-type La3-xTe4 thermoelectric material as the prototype. With the rigid band approximation, the calculated temperature dependences of the Seebeck coefficients of La3-xTe4 as a function of carrier concentration show excellent agreements with experimental data.

Experimental study of extrinsic spin Hall effect in CuPt alloy

We have experimentally studied the effects on the spin Hall angle due to systematic addition of Pt into the light metal Cu. We perform spin torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements on Py/CuPt bilayer and find that as the Pt concentration increases, the spin Hall angle of CuPt alloy increases. Moreover, only 28% Pt in CuPt alloy can give rise to a spin Hall angle close to that of Pt. We further extract the spin Hall resistivity of CuPt alloy for different Pt concentrations and find that the contribution of skew scattering is larger for lower Pt concentrations, while the side-jump contribution is larger for higher Pt concentrations. From technological perspective, since the CuPt alloy can sustain high processing temperatures and Cu is the most common metallization element in the Si platform, it would be easier to integrate the CuPt alloy based spintronic devices into existing Si fabrication technology.

Nowhere-zero $3$-flow of graphs with small independence number

Tutte's $3$-flow conjecture states that every $4$-edge-connected graph admits a nowhere-zero $3$-flow. In this paper, we characterize all graphs with independence number at most $4$ that admit a nowhere-zero $3$-flow. The characterization of $3$-flow verifies Tutte's $3$-flow conjecture for graphs with independence number at most $4$ and with order at least $21$. In addition, we prove that every odd-$5$-edge-connected graph with independence number at most $3$ admits a nowhere-zero $3$-flow. To obtain these results, we introduce a new reduction method to handle odd wheels.

Integrability of scalar curvature and normal metric on conformally flat manifolds

On a manifold $(\mathbb{R}^n, e^{2u} |dx|^2)$, we say $u$ is normal if the $Q$-curvature equation that $u$ satisfies $(-Δ)^{\frac{n}{2}} u = Q_g e^{nu}$ can be written as the integral form $u(x)=\frac{1}{c_n}\int_{\mathbb R^n}\log\frac{|y|}{|x-y|}Q_g(y)e^{nu(y)}dy+C$. In this paper, we show that the integrability assumption on the negative part of the scalar curvature implies the metric is normal. As an application, we prove a bi-Lipschitz equivalence theorem for conformally flat metrics.

Boundary operators associated to the $σ_k$-curvature

We study conformal deformation problems on manifolds with boundary which include prescribing $σ_k\equiv0$ in the interior. In particular, we prove a Dirichlet principle when the induced metric on the boundary is fixed and an Obata-type theorem on the upper hemisphere. We introduce some conformally covariant multilinear operators as a key technical tool.

Bipartite bi-Cayley graphs over metacyclic groups of odd prime-power order

A graph $Γ$ is a bi-Cayley graph over a group $G$ if $G$ is a semiregular group of automorphisms of $Γ$ having two orbits. Let $G$ be a non-abelian metacyclic $p$-group for an odd prime $p$, and let $Γ$ be a connected bipartite bi-Cayley graph over the group $G$. In this paper, we prove that $G$ is normal in the full automorphism group ${\rm Aut}(Γ)$ of $Γ$ when $G$ is a Sylow $p$-subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(Γ)$. As an application, we classify half-arc-transitive bipartite bi-Cayley graphs over the group $G$ of valency less than $2p$. Furthermore, it is shown that there are no semisymmetric and no arc-transitive bipartite bi-Cayley graphs over the group $G$ of valency less than $p$.

Massive Fields as Systematics for Single Field Inflation

During inflation, massive fields can contribute to the power spectrum of curvature perturbation via a dimension-5 operator. This contribution can be considered as a bias for the program of using $n_s$ and $r$ to select inflation models. Even the dimension-5 operator is suppressed by $Λ= M_p$, there is still a significant shift on the $n_s$-$r$ diagram if the massive fields have $m\sim H$. On the other hand, if the heavy degree of freedom appears only at the same energy scale as the suppression scale of the dimension-5 operator, then significant shift on the $n_s$-$r$ diagram takes place at $m=Λ\sim 70H$, which is around the inflationary time-translation symmetry breaking scale. Hence, the systematics from massive fields pose a greater challenge for future high precision experiments for inflationary model selection. This result can be thought of as the impact of UV sensitivity to inflationary observables.

Standard Model Background of the Cosmological Collider

The inflationary universe can be viewed as a "Cosmological Collider" with energy of Hubble scale, producing very massive particles and recording their characteristic signals in primordial non-Gaussianities. To utilize this collider to explore any new physics at very high scales, it is a prerequisite to understand the background signals from the particle physics Standard Model. In this paper we describe the Standard Model background of the Cosmological Collider.
