A standalone simulation framework of the MRPC detector read out in waveforms

Dedicated detector simulations are very important for the success of high energy physics experiments. They not only bring benefits to the optimization of the detectors, but can also improve the precision of the physics results. To design a Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) with a very good time resolution, a detailed monte-carlo simulation of the detector is needed and described in this paper. The simulation can produce detector signal waveforms which contain a complete information about the events. The detector performance filled with different gas mixtures is studied, and comparison between simulation and experimental results show a good agreement.

Neutrino Signatures in Primordial Non-Gaussianities

We study the cosmological collider phenomenology of neutrinos in an effective field theory. The mass spectrum of neutrinos and their characteristic oscillatory signatures in the squeezed limit bispectrum are computed. Both dS-covariant and slow-roll corrections are considered, so is the scenario of electroweak symmetry breaking during inflation. Interestingly, we show that the slow-roll background of the inflaton provides a chemical potential for the neutrino production. The chemical potential greatly amplifies the oscillatory signal and makes the signal observably large for heavy neutrinos without the need of fine tuning.

Nonuniqueness for a fully nonlinear boundary Yamabe-type problem via bifurcation theory

One way to generalize the boundary Yamabe problem posed by Escobar is to ask if a given metric on a compact manifold with boundary can be conformally deformed to have vanishing $σ_k$-curvature in the interior and constant $H_k$-curvature on the boundary. When restricting to the closure of the positive $k$-cone, this is a fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic boundary value problem with fully nonlinear Robin-type boundary condition. We prove a general bifurcation theorem which allows us to construct examples of compact Riemannian manifolds $(X,g)$ for which this problem admits multiple non-homothetic solutions in the case when $2k<\dim X$. Our examples are all such that the boundary with its induced metric is a Riemannian product of a round sphere with an Einstein manifold.

Approximation in higher-order Sobolev spaces and Hodge systems

Let $d\geq 2$ be an integer, $1\leq l\leq d-1$ and $φ$ be a differential $l$-form on ${\mathbb R}^d$ with $\dot{W}^{1,d}$ coefficients. It was proved by Bourgain and Brezis (\cite[Theorem 5]{MR2293957}) that there exists a differential $l$-form $ψ$ on ${\mathbb R}^d$ with coefficients in $L^{\infty}\cap \dot{W}^{1,d}$ such that $dφ=dψ$. Bourgain and Brezis also asked whether this result can be extended to differential forms with coefficients in the fractional Sobolev space $\dot{W}^{s,p}$ with $sp=d$. We give a positive answer to this question, in the more general context of Triebel-Lizorkin spaces, provided that $d-κ\leq l\leq d-1$, where $κ$ is the largest positive integer such that $κ<\min(p,d)$. The proof relies on an approximation result for functions in $\dot{W}^{s,p}$ by functions in $\dot{W}^{s,p}\cap L^{\infty}$, even though $\dot{W}^{s,p}$ does not embed into $L^{\infty}$ in this critical case.

A Probabilistic Extension of Action Language BC+

We present a probabilistic extension of action language BC+. Just like BC+ is defined as a high-level notation of answer set programs for describing transition systems, the proposed language, which we call pBC+, is defined as a high-level notation of LPMLN programs---a probabilistic extension of answer set programs. We show how probabilistic reasoning about transition systems, such as prediction, postdiction, and planning problems, as well as probabilistic diagnosis for dynamic domains, can be modeled in pBC+ and computed using an implementation of LPMLN.

Energy Optimization for Cellular-Connected Multi-UAV Mobile Edge Computing Systems with Multi-Access Schemes

In this paper, a cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) mobile edge computing system is studied in which the multiple UAVs are served by terrestrial base station (TBS) for computation task offloading. Our goal is to minimize the total UAVs energy consumption, including propulsion energy, computation energy and communication energy, while ensuring that the total number of bits of UAVs are completely computed. For tackling the large amount of bits for computation, we propose a resource partitioning strategy where one portion of tasks is migrated to TBS for computation and the other portion of tasks is locally computed at UAV. For deeply comprehending the impacts of access manners on the system performance, we consider four access schemes in the uplink transmission, i.e., time division multiple access (TDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), One-by-One access and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The problem of jointly optimizing bit allocation, power allocation, resource partitioning as well as UAV trajectory under TBS's energy budget is formulated and tackled by means of successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. The numerical results show that the proposed schemes save much energy compared with benchmark schemes.

Muon Tomography imaging improvement using optimized scattering tracks data based on Maximum Likelihood Method

Point of colsest Approche algorithm (PoCA) based on the formalism of muon radiogra- phy using Multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS) as information source is previously used to obtain the reconstruction image of high Z material. The low accuracy of reconstruction image is caused by two factors: the flux of natural muon and the assumption of single scattering in PoCA algo- rithm. In this paper, the maximum likelihood method based on the characteristics of Gaussian-like distribution of muon tracks by MCS is used to predict the optimal track of outgoing muon. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and the localization ROC (LROC) are used as two analysis methods to evaluate the quality of reconstruction image. From the results of simulation, the perfect discrimination of longitudinal materials could be well achieved by maximum likelihood algorithm and the discriminate ratio that is predicted by the maximum likelihood method is about 15% higher than that of predicted by PoCA algorithm method. It is seen that the maximum likelihood method can greatly improve the accuracy of reconstruction image.

Generalized Robust Bayesian Committee Machine for Large-scale Gaussian Process Regression

In order to scale standard Gaussian process (GP) regression to large-scale datasets, aggregation models employ factorized training process and then combine predictions from distributed experts. The state-of-the-art aggregation models, however, either provide inconsistent predictions or require time-consuming aggregation process. We first prove the inconsistency of typical aggregations using disjoint or random data partition, and then present a consistent yet efficient aggregation model for large-scale GP. The proposed model inherits the advantages of aggregations, e.g., closed-form inference and aggregation, parallelization and distributed computing. Furthermore, theoretical and empirical analyses reveal that the new aggregation model performs better due to the consistent predictions that converge to the true underlying function when the training size approaches infinity.

Direct visualization of current induced spin accumulation in topological insulators

Charge-to-spin conversion in various material systems is the key for the fundamental understanding of spin-orbitronis as well as the development of efficient means to manipulate the magnetization. We report the direct spatial imaging of current induced spin accumulation at the channel edges of Bi2Se3 and BiSbTeSe2 topological insulators by a scanning photovoltage microscope at room temperature. The spin polarization is along the out-of-plane direction with opposite signs for the two channel edges. The accumulated spin direction reverses sign upon changing the current direction and the detected spin signal shows a linear dependence on the magnitude of currents, which indicates that our observed phenomena are the current induced effects. The spin Hall angle of Bi2Se3 and BiSbTeSe2 is determined to be 0.0085 and 0.0616, respectively. We further image the current induced spin accumulation in a Pt heavy metal. Our results open up the possibility of optically detecting the current induced spin accumulations, and thus point towards a better understanding of the interaction between spins and circularly polarized light.

FMR-related phenomena in spintronic devices

Spintronic devices, such as non-volatile magnetic random access memories and logic devices, have attracted considerable attention as potential candidates for future high efficient data storage and computing technology. In a heavy metal or other emerging material with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the charge currents induce spin currents or spin accumulations via SOC. The generated spin currents can exert spin-orbit torques (SOTs) on an adjacent ferromagnet, which opens up a new way to realize magnetization dynamics and switching of the ferromagnetic layer for spintronic devices. In the SOT scheme, the charge-to-spin interconversion efficiency (SOT efficiency) is an important figure of merit for applications. For the effective characterization of this efficiency, the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) based methods, such as the spin transfer torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) and the spin pumping, are common utilized in addition to low frequency harmonic or dc measurements. In this review, we focus on the ST-FMR measurements for the evaluation of the SOT efficiency. We provide a brief summary of the different ST-FMR setups and data analysis methods. We then discuss ST-FMR and SOT studies in various materials, including heavy metals and alloys, topological insulators, two dimensional (2D) materials, interfaces with strong Rashba effect, antiferromagnetic materials, two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in oxide materials and oxidized nonmagnetic materials.

Wireless Network Coding in Network MIMO: A New Design for 5G and Beyond

Physical layer network coding (PNC) has been studied to serve wireless network MIMO systems with much lower backhaul load than approaches such as Cloud Radio Access Network (Cloud-RAN) and coordinated multipoint (CoMP). In this paper, we present a design guideline of engineering applicable PNC to fulfil the request of high user densities in 5G wireless RAN infrastructure. Unlike compute-and-forward and PNC design criteria for two-way relay channels, the proposed guideline is designed for uplink of network MIMO (N-MIMO) systems. We show that the proposed design criteria guarantee that 1) the whole system operates over binary system; 2) the PNC functions utilised at each access point overcome all singular fade states; 3) the destination can unambiguously recover all source messages while the overall backhaul load remains at the lowest level. We then develop a two-stage search algorithm to identify the optimum PNC mapping functions which greatly reduces the real-time computational complexity. The impact of estimated channel information and reduced number of singular fade states in different QAM modulation schemes is studied in this paper. In addition, a sub-optimal search method based on lookup table mechanism to achieve further reduced computational complexity with limited performance loss is presented. Numerical results show that the proposed schemes achieve low outage probability with reduced backhaul load.

Quantum Standard Clocks in the Primordial Trispectrum

We calculate the primordial trispectrum of curvature perturbation in quasi-single field inflation, with general sound speeds for both the inflaton and the massive scalar. Special attention is paid to various soft limits of the trispectrum, where the shape function shows characteristic oscillatory pattern (known as the quantum primordial standard clock signal) as a function of the momentum ratio. Our calculation is greatly simplified by using the "mixed propagator" developed under a diagrammatic representation of the in-in formalism.

Status of technology of MRPC time of flight system

Time of flight system (TOF) based on MRPC technology is widely used in modern physics experiments, and it also plays an important role in particle identification. With the increase of accelerator energy and luminosity, TOF system is required to indentify definite particles precisely under high rate environment. The MRPC technology TOF system can be defined as three generations. The first generation TOF is based on float glass MRPC and its time resolution is around 80ps, but the rate is relatively low (typically lower than 100Hz/cm2). The typical systems are TOF of RHIC-STAR, LHC-ALICE and BES III endcap. For the second generation TOF, its time resolution is in the same order with the first generation, but the rate capability is much higher. Its rate capability can reach 30kHz/cm2. The typical experiment with this high rate TOF is FAIR-CBM. The biggest challenge is on the third generation TOF. For example, the momentum upper limit of K/PI separation is around 7GeV/c for JLab-SoLID TOF system under high particle rate as high as 20kHz/cm2, the time requirement is around 20ps. The readout electronics of first two generations is based on time over threshold method and pulse shape sampling technology will be used in the third generation TOF. In the same time, the machine learning technology is also designed to analysis the time performance. In this paper, we will describe the evolution of MRPC TOF technology and key technology of each generation TOF.

An Adaptive Optimal Mapping Selection Algorithm for PNC using Variable QAM Modulation

Fifth generation (5G) wireless networks will need to serve much higher user densities than existing 4G networks, and will therefore require an enhanced radio access network (RAN) infrastructure. Physical layer network coding (PNC) has been shown to enable such high densities with much lower backhaul load than approaches such as Cloud-RAN and coordinated multipoint (CoMP). In this letter, we present an engineering applicable PNC scheme which allows different cooperating users to use different modulation schemes, according to the relative strength of their channels to a given access point. This is in contrast with compute-and-forward and previous PNC schemes which are designed for two-way relay channel. A two-stage search algorithm to identify the optimum PNC mappings for given channel state information and modulation is proposed in this letter. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme achieves low bit error rate with reduced backhaul load.

A neural network based algorithm for MRPC time reconstruction

Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber(MRPC) is a widely used timing detector with a typical time resolution of about 60 ps. This makes MRPC an optimal choice for the time of flight(ToF) system in many large physics experiments. The prior work on improving the time resolution is mainly focused on altering the detector geometry, and therefore the improvement of the data analysis algorithm has not been fully explored. This paper proposes a new time reconstruction algorithm based on the deep neural networks(NN) and improves the MRPC time resolution by about 10 ps. Since the development of the high energy physics experiments has pushed the timing requirements for the MRPC to a higher level, this algorithm could become a potential substitution of the time over threshold(ToT) method to achieve a time resolution below 30 ps.

A Physical Layer Network Coding Design for 5G Network MIMO

This paper presents a physical layer network coding (PNC) approach for network MIMO (N-MIMO) systems to release the heavy burden of backhaul load. The proposed PNC approach is applied for uplink scenario in binary systems, and the design guideline serves multiple mobile terminals (MTs) and guarantees unambiguous recovery of the message from each MT. We present a novel PNC design criterion first based on binary matrix theories, followed by an adaptive optimal mapping selection algorithm based on the proposed design criterion. In order to reduce the real-time computational complexity, a two-stage search algorithm for the optimal binary PNC mapping matrix is developed. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme achieves lower outage probability with reduced backhaul load compared to practical CoMP schemes which quantize the estimated symbols from a log-likelihood ratio (LLR) based multiuser detector into binary bits at each access point (AP).

Monolithic quantum-dot distributed feedback laser array on silicon

Electrically-pumped lasers directly grown on silicon are key devices interfacing silicon microelectronics and photonics. We report here, for the first time, an electrically-pumped, room-temperature, continuous-wave (CW) and single-mode distributed feedback (DFB) laser array fabricated in InAs/GaAs quantum-dot (QD) gain material epitaxially grown on silicon. CW threshold currents as low as 12 mA and single-mode side mode suppression ratios (SMSRs) as high as 50 dB have been achieved from individual devices in the array. The laser array, compatible with state-of-the-art coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) systems, has a well-aligned channel spacing of 20 0.2 nm and exhibits a record wavelength coverage range of 100 nm, the full span of the O-band. These results indicate that, for the first time, the performance of lasers epitaxially grown on silicon is elevated to a point approaching real-world CWDM applications, demonstrating the great potential of this technology.
