Visual Environment Assessment for Safe Autonomous Quadrotor Landing

Autonomous identification and evaluation of safe landing zones are of paramount importance for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of aerial robots in the event of system failures, low battery, or the successful completion of specific tasks. In this paper, we present a novel approach for detection and assessment of potential landing sites for safe quadrotor landing. Our solution efficiently integrates 2D and 3D environmental information, eliminating the need for external aids such as GPS and computationally intensive elevation maps. The proposed pipeline combines semantic data derived from a Neural Network (NN), to extract environmental features, with geometric data obtained from a disparity map, to extract critical geometric attributes such as slope, flatness, and roughness. We define several cost metrics based on these attributes to evaluate safety, stability, and suitability of regions in the environments and identify the most suitable landing area. Our approach runs in real-time on quadrotors equipped with limited computational capabilities. Experimental results conducted in diverse environments demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively assess and identify suitable landing areas, enabling the safe and autonomous landing of a quadrotor.

LLM Inference Unveiled: Survey and Roofline Model Insights

The field of efficient Large Language Model (LLM) inference is rapidly evolving, presenting a unique blend of opportunities and challenges. Although the field has expanded and is vibrant, there hasn't been a concise framework that analyzes the various methods of LLM Inference to provide a clear understanding of this domain. Our survey stands out from traditional literature reviews by not only summarizing the current state of research but also by introducing a framework based on roofline model for systematic analysis of LLM inference techniques. This framework identifies the bottlenecks when deploying LLMs on hardware devices and provides a clear understanding of practical problems, such as why LLMs are memory-bound, how much memory and computation they need, and how to choose the right hardware. We systematically collate the latest advancements in efficient LLM inference, covering crucial areas such as model compression (e.g., Knowledge Distillation and Quantization), algorithm improvements (e.g., Early Exit and Mixture-of-Expert), and both hardware and system-level enhancements. Our survey stands out by analyzing these methods with roofline model, helping us understand their impact on memory access and computation. This distinctive approach not only showcases the current research landscape but also delivers valuable insights for practical implementation, positioning our work as an indispensable resource for researchers new to the field as well as for those seeking to deepen their understanding of efficient LLM deployment. The analyze tool, LLM-Viewer, is open-sourced.

VideoGigaGAN: Towards Detail-rich Video Super-Resolution

Video super-resolution (VSR) approaches have shown impressive temporal consistency in upsampled videos. However, these approaches tend to generate blurrier results than their image counterparts as they are limited in their generative capability. This raises a fundamental question: can we extend the success of a generative image upsampler to the VSR task while preserving the temporal consistency? We introduce VideoGigaGAN, a new generative VSR model that can produce videos with high-frequency details and temporal consistency. VideoGigaGAN builds upon a large-scale image upsampler -- GigaGAN. Simply inflating GigaGAN to a video model by adding temporal modules produces severe temporal flickering. We identify several key issues and propose techniques that significantly improve the temporal consistency of upsampled videos. Our experiments show that, unlike previous VSR methods, VideoGigaGAN generates temporally consistent videos with more fine-grained appearance details. We validate the effectiveness of VideoGigaGAN by comparing it with state-of-the-art VSR models on public datasets and showcasing video results with $8\times$ super-resolution.

Human-Machine Interaction in Automated Vehicles: Reducing Voluntary Driver Intervention

This paper develops a novel car-following control method to reduce voluntary driver interventions and improve traffic stability in Automated Vehicles (AVs). Through a combination of experimental and empirical analysis, we show how voluntary driver interventions can instigate substantial traffic disturbances that are amplified along the traffic upstream. Motivated by these findings, we present a framework for driver intervention based on evidence accumulation (EA), which describes the evolution of the driver's distrust in automation, ultimately resulting in intervention. Informed through the EA framework, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based car-following control for AVs that is strategically designed to mitigate unnecessary driver intervention and improve traffic stability. Numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control model.

CTSM: Combining Trait and State Emotions for Empathetic Response Model

Empathetic response generation endeavors to empower dialogue systems to perceive speakers' emotions and generate empathetic responses accordingly. Psychological research demonstrates that emotion, as an essential factor in empathy, encompasses trait emotions, which are static and context-independent, and state emotions, which are dynamic and context-dependent. However, previous studies treat them in isolation, leading to insufficient emotional perception of the context, and subsequently, less effective empathetic expression. To address this problem, we propose Combining Trait and State emotions for Empathetic Response Model (CTSM). Specifically, to sufficiently perceive emotions in dialogue, we first construct and encode trait and state emotion embeddings, and then we further enhance emotional perception capability through an emotion guidance module that guides emotion representation. In addition, we propose a cross-contrastive learning decoder to enhance the model's empathetic expression capability by aligning trait and state emotions between generated responses and contexts. Both automatic and manual evaluation results demonstrate that CTSM outperforms state-of-the-art baselines and can generate more empathetic responses. SmartRefine: A Scenario-Adaptive Refinement Framework for Efficient Motion Prediction

Predicting the future motion of surrounding agents is essential for autonomous vehicles (AVs) to operate safely in dynamic, human-robot-mixed environments. Context information, such as road maps and surrounding agents' states, provides crucial geometric and semantic information for motion behavior prediction. To this end, recent works explore two-stage prediction frameworks where coarse trajectories are first proposed, and then used to select critical context information for trajectory refinement. However, they either incur a large amount of computation or bring limited improvement, if not both. In this paper, we introduce a novel scenario-adaptive refinement strategy, named SmartRefine, to refine prediction with minimal additional computation. Specifically, SmartRefine can comprehensively adapt refinement configurations based on each scenario's properties, and smartly chooses the number of refinement iterations by introducing a quality score to measure the prediction quality and remaining refinement potential of each scenario. SmartRefine is designed as a generic and flexible approach that can be seamlessly integrated into most state-of-the-art motion prediction models. Experiments on Argoverse (1 & 2) show that our method consistently improves the prediction accuracy of multiple state-of-the-art prediction models. Specifically, by adding SmartRefine to QCNet, we outperform all published ensemble-free works on the Argoverse 2 leaderboard (single agent track) at submission. Comprehensive studies are also conducted to ablate design choices and explore the mechanism behind multi-iteration refinement. Codes are available at https://github.com/opendilab/SmartRefine/

Template-Free Single-View 3D Human Digitalization with Diffusion-Guided LRM

Reconstructing 3D humans from a single image has been extensively investigated. However, existing approaches often fall short on capturing fine geometry and appearance details, hallucinating occluded parts with plausible details, and achieving generalization across unseen and in-the-wild datasets. We present Human-LRM, a diffusion-guided feed-forward model that predicts the implicit field of a human from a single image. Leveraging the power of the state-of-the-art reconstruction model (i.e., LRM) and generative model (i.e Stable Diffusion), our method is able to capture human without any template prior, e.g., SMPL, and effectively enhance occluded parts with rich and realistic details. Our approach first uses a single-view LRM model with an enhanced geometry decoder to get the triplane NeRF representation. The novel view renderings from the triplane NeRF provide strong geometry and color prior, from which we generate photo-realistic details for the occluded parts using a diffusion model. The generated multiple views then enable reconstruction with high-quality geometry and appearance, leading to superior overall performance comparing to all existing human reconstruction methods.

A Survey of Lottery Ticket Hypothesis

The Lottery Ticket Hypothesis (LTH) states that a dense neural network model contains a highly sparse subnetwork (i.e., winning tickets) that can achieve even better performance than the original model when trained in isolation. While LTH has been proved both empirically and theoretically in many works, there still are some open issues, such as efficiency and scalability, to be addressed. Also, the lack of open-source frameworks and consensual experimental setting poses a challenge to future research on LTH. We, for the first time, examine previous research and studies on LTH from different perspectives. We also discuss issues in existing works and list potential directions for further exploration. This survey aims to provide an in-depth look at the state of LTH and develop a duly maintained platform to conduct experiments and compare with the most updated baselines.

LRM: Large Reconstruction Model for Single Image to 3D

We propose the first Large Reconstruction Model (LRM) that predicts the 3D model of an object from a single input image within just 5 seconds. In contrast to many previous methods that are trained on small-scale datasets such as ShapeNet in a category-specific fashion, LRM adopts a highly scalable transformer-based architecture with 500 million learnable parameters to directly predict a neural radiance field (NeRF) from the input image. We train our model in an end-to-end manner on massive multi-view data containing around 1 million objects, including both synthetic renderings from Objaverse and real captures from MVImgNet. This combination of a high-capacity model and large-scale training data empowers our model to be highly generalizable and produce high-quality 3D reconstructions from various testing inputs, including real-world in-the-wild captures and images created by generative models. Video demos and interactable 3D meshes can be found on our LRM project webpage: https://yiconghong.me/LRM.

95 GeV excess in a $CP$-violating $μ$-from-$ν$ SSM

The CMS and ATLAS have recently reported their results searching for light Higgs boson with mass around 95 GeV, based on the full Run 2 data set. In the framework of the CP-violating (CPV) $μν$SSM, we discuss a $\sim$ 2.9$σ$ (local) excess at 95 GeV in the light Higgs boson search in the diphoton decay mode as reported by ATLAS and CMS, together with a $\sim$ 2$σ$ excess (local) in the $b\bar{b}$ final state at LEP in the same mass range. By introducing CPV phases as well as by mixing CP-even Higgs and CP-odd Higgs, a lighter Higgs boson in the $μν$SSM can be produced, which can account for the "di-photon excess".

Deformable One-shot Face Stylization via DINO Semantic Guidance

This paper addresses the complex issue of one-shot face stylization, focusing on the simultaneous consideration of appearance and structure, where previous methods have fallen short. We explore deformation-aware face stylization that diverges from traditional single-image style reference, opting for a real-style image pair instead. The cornerstone of our method is the utilization of a self-supervised vision transformer, specifically DINO-ViT, to establish a robust and consistent facial structure representation across both real and style domains. Our stylization process begins by adapting the StyleGAN generator to be deformation-aware through the integration of spatial transformers (STN). We then introduce two innovative constraints for generator fine-tuning under the guidance of DINO semantics: i) a directional deformation loss that regulates directional vectors in DINO space, and ii) a relative structural consistency constraint based on DINO token self-similarities, ensuring diverse generation. Additionally, style-mixing is employed to align the color generation with the reference, minimizing inconsistent correspondences. This framework delivers enhanced deformability for general one-shot face stylization, achieving notable efficiency with a fine-tuning duration of approximately 10 minutes. Extensive qualitative and quantitative comparisons demonstrate our superiority over state-of-the-art one-shot face stylization methods. Code is available at https://github.com/zichongc/DoesFS

Federated Learning of Large Language Models with Parameter-Efficient Prompt Tuning and Adaptive Optimization

Federated learning (FL) is a promising paradigm to enable collaborative model training with decentralized data. However, the training process of Large Language Models (LLMs) generally incurs the update of significant parameters, which limits the applicability of FL techniques to tackle the LLMs in real scenarios. Prompt tuning can significantly reduce the number of parameters to update, but it either incurs performance degradation or low training efficiency. The straightforward utilization of prompt tuning in the FL often raises non-trivial communication costs and dramatically degrades performance. In addition, the decentralized data is generally non-Independent and Identically Distributed (non-IID), which brings client drift problems and thus poor performance. This paper proposes a Parameter-efficient prompt Tuning approach with Adaptive Optimization, i.e., FedPepTAO, to enable efficient and effective FL of LLMs. First, an efficient partial prompt tuning approach is proposed to improve performance and efficiency simultaneously. Second, a novel adaptive optimization method is developed to address the client drift problems on both the device and server sides to enhance performance further. Extensive experiments based on 10 datasets demonstrate the superb performance (up to 60.8\% in terms of accuracy) and efficiency (up to 97.59\% in terms of training time) of FedPepTAO compared with 9 baseline approaches. Generating Non-Stationary Textures using Self-Rectification

This paper addresses the challenge of example-based non-stationary texture synthesis. We introduce a novel twostep approach wherein users first modify a reference texture using standard image editing tools, yielding an initial rough target for the synthesis. Subsequently, our proposed method, termed "self-rectification", automatically refines this target into a coherent, seamless texture, while faithfully preserving the distinct visual characteristics of the reference exemplar. Our method leverages a pre-trained diffusion network, and uses self-attention mechanisms, to gradually align the synthesized texture with the reference, ensuring the retention of the structures in the provided target. Through experimental validation, our approach exhibits exceptional proficiency in handling non-stationary textures, demonstrating significant advancements in texture synthesis when compared to existing state-of-the-art techniques. Overview of Sensing Attacks on Autonomous Vehicle Technologies and Impact on Traffic Flow

While perception systems in Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), which encompass both communication technologies and advanced sensors, promise to significantly reduce human driving errors, they also expose CAVs to various cyberattacks. These include both communication and sensing attacks, which potentially jeopardize not only individual vehicles but also overall traffic safety and efficiency. While much research has focused on communication attacks, sensing attacks, which are equally critical, have garnered less attention. To address this gap, this study offers a comprehensive review of potential sensing attacks and their impact on target vehicles, focusing on commonly deployed sensors in CAVs such as cameras, LiDAR, Radar, ultrasonic sensors, and GPS. Based on this review, we discuss the feasibility of integrating hardware-in-the-loop experiments with microscopic traffic simulations. We also design baseline scenarios to analyze the macro-level impact of sensing attacks on traffic flow. This study aims to bridge the research gap between individual vehicle sensing attacks and broader macroscopic impacts, thereby laying the foundation for future systemic understanding and mitigation.

ActAnywhere: Subject-Aware Video Background Generation

Generating video background that tailors to foreground subject motion is an important problem for the movie industry and visual effects community. This task involves synthesizing background that aligns with the motion and appearance of the foreground subject, while also complies with the artist's creative intention. We introduce ActAnywhere, a generative model that automates this process which traditionally requires tedious manual efforts. Our model leverages the power of large-scale video diffusion models, and is specifically tailored for this task. ActAnywhere takes a sequence of foreground subject segmentation as input and an image that describes the desired scene as condition, to produce a coherent video with realistic foreground-background interactions while adhering to the condition frame. We train our model on a large-scale dataset of human-scene interaction videos. Extensive evaluations demonstrate the superior performance of our model, significantly outperforming baselines. Moreover, we show that ActAnywhere generalizes to diverse out-of-distribution samples, including non-human subjects. Please visit our project webpage at https://actanywhere.github.io.

Jump Cut Smoothing for Talking Heads

A jump cut offers an abrupt, sometimes unwanted change in the viewing experience. We present a novel framework for smoothing these jump cuts, in the context of talking head videos. We leverage the appearance of the subject from the other source frames in the video, fusing it with a mid-level representation driven by DensePose keypoints and face landmarks. To achieve motion, we interpolate the keypoints and landmarks between the end frames around the cut. We then use an image translation network from the keypoints and source frames, to synthesize pixels. Because keypoints can contain errors, we propose a cross-modal attention scheme to select and pick the most appropriate source amongst multiple options for each key point. By leveraging this mid-level representation, our method can achieve stronger results than a strong video interpolation baseline. We demonstrate our method on various jump cuts in the talking head videos, such as cutting filler words, pauses, and even random cuts. Our experiments show that we can achieve seamless transitions, even in the challenging cases where the talking head rotates or moves drastically in the jump cut.

Entanglement Structure Detection via Computer Vision

Quantum entanglement plays a pivotal role in various quantum information processing tasks. However, there still lacks a universal and effective way to detecting entanglement structures, especially for high-dimensional and multipartite quantum systems. Noticing the mathematical similarities between the common representations of many-body quantum states and the data structures of images, we are inspired to employ advanced computer vision technologies for data analysis. In this work, we propose a hybrid CNN-Transformer model for both the classification of GHZ and W states and the detection of various entanglement structures. By leveraging the feature extraction capabilities of CNNs and the powerful modeling abilities of Transformers, we can not only effectively reduce the time and computational resources required for the training process but also obtain high detection accuracies. Through numerical simulation and physical verification, it is confirmed that our hybrid model is more effective than traditional techniques and thus offers a powerful tool for independent detection of multipartite entanglement.

Understanding Heterogeneity of Automated Vehicles and Its Traffic-level Impact: A Stochastic Behavioral Perspective

This paper develops a stochastic and unifying framework to examine variability in car-following (CF) dynamics of commercial automated vehicles (AVs) and its direct relation to traffic-level dynamics. The asymmetric behavior (AB) model by Chen at al. (2012a) is extended to accommodate a range of CF behaviors by AVs and compare with the baseline of human-driven vehicles (HDVs). The parameters of the extended AB (EAB) model are calibrated using an adaptive sequential Monte Carlo method for Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC-ASMC) to stochastically capture various uncertainties including model mismatch resulting from unknown AV CF logic. The estimated posterior distributions of the parameters reveal significant differences in CF behavior (1) between AVs and HDVs, and (2) across AV developers, engine modes, and speed ranges, albeit to a lesser degree. The estimated behavioral patterns and simulation experiments further reveal mixed platoon dynamics in terms of traffic throughout reduction and hysteresis.
