High precision atom interferometer-based dynamic gravimeter measurement by eliminating the cross-coupling effect

A dynamic gravimeter with an atomic interferometer (AI) can perform absolute gravity measurements with high precision. AI-based dynamic gravity measurement is a type of joint measurement that uses AI sensors and a classical accelerometer. The coupling of the two sensors may degrade the measurement precision. In this study, we analyzed the cross-coupling effect and introduced a recovery vector to suppress this effect. We improved the phase noise of the interference fringe by a factor of 1.9 by performing marine gravity measurements using an AI-based gravimeter and optimizing the recovery vector. Marine gravity measurements were performed, and high gravity measurement precision was achieved. The external and inner coincidence accuracies of the gravity measurement are 0.42 mGal and 0.46 mGal, which were improved by factors of 4.18 and 4.21 by optimizing the cross-coupling effect.

In-Hand 3D Object Reconstruction from a Monocular RGB Video

Our work aims to reconstruct a 3D object that is held and rotated by a hand in front of a static RGB camera. Previous methods that use implicit neural representations to recover the geometry of a generic hand-held object from multi-view images achieved compelling results in the visible part of the object. However, these methods falter in accurately capturing the shape within the hand-object contact region due to occlusion. In this paper, we propose a novel method that deals with surface reconstruction under occlusion by incorporating priors of 2D occlusion elucidation and physical contact constraints. For the former, we introduce an object amodal completion network to infer the 2D complete mask of objects under occlusion. To ensure the accuracy and view consistency of the predicted 2D amodal masks, we devise a joint optimization method for both amodal mask refinement and 3D reconstruction. For the latter, we impose penetration and attraction constraints on the local geometry in contact regions. We evaluate our approach on HO3D and HOD datasets and demonstrate that it outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of reconstruction surface quality, with an improvement of $52\%$ on HO3D and $20\%$ on HOD. AEDFL: Efficient Asynchronous Decentralized Federated Learning with Heterogeneous Devices

Federated Learning (FL) has achieved significant achievements recently, enabling collaborative model training on distributed data over edge devices. Iterative gradient or model exchanges between devices and the centralized server in the standard FL paradigm suffer from severe efficiency bottlenecks on the server. While enabling collaborative training without a central server, existing decentralized FL approaches either focus on the synchronous mechanism that deteriorates FL convergence or ignore device staleness with an asynchronous mechanism, resulting in inferior FL accuracy. In this paper, we propose an Asynchronous Efficient Decentralized FL framework, i.e., AEDFL, in heterogeneous environments with three unique contributions. First, we propose an asynchronous FL system model with an efficient model aggregation method for improving the FL convergence. Second, we propose a dynamic staleness-aware model update approach to achieve superior accuracy. Third, we propose an adaptive sparse training method to reduce communication and computation costs without significant accuracy degradation. Extensive experimentation on four public datasets and four models demonstrates the strength of AEDFL in terms of accuracy (up to 16.3% higher), efficiency (up to 92.9% faster), and computation costs (up to 42.3% lower).

FedASMU: Efficient Asynchronous Federated Learning with Dynamic Staleness-aware Model Update

As a promising approach to deal with distributed data, Federated Learning (FL) achieves major advancements in recent years. FL enables collaborative model training by exploiting the raw data dispersed in multiple edge devices. However, the data is generally non-independent and identically distributed, i.e., statistical heterogeneity, and the edge devices significantly differ in terms of both computation and communication capacity, i.e., system heterogeneity. The statistical heterogeneity leads to severe accuracy degradation while the system heterogeneity significantly prolongs the training process. In order to address the heterogeneity issue, we propose an Asynchronous Staleness-aware Model Update FL framework, i.e., FedASMU, with two novel methods. First, we propose an asynchronous FL system model with a dynamical model aggregation method between updated local models and the global model on the server for superior accuracy and high efficiency. Then, we propose an adaptive local model adjustment method by aggregating the fresh global model with local models on devices to further improve the accuracy. Extensive experimentation with 6 models and 5 public datasets demonstrates that FedASMU significantly outperforms baseline approaches in terms of accuracy (0.60% to 23.90% higher) and efficiency (3.54% to 97.98% faster).

Spatial-wise Dynamic Distillation for MLP-like Efficient Visual Fault Detection of Freight Trains

Despite the successful application of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in object detection tasks, their efficiency in detecting faults from freight train images remains inadequate for implementation in real-world engineering scenarios. Existing modeling shortcomings of spatial invariance and pooling layers in conventional CNNs often ignore the neglect of crucial global information, resulting in error localization for fault objection tasks of freight trains. To solve these problems, we design a spatial-wise dynamic distillation framework based on multi-layer perceptron (MLP) for visual fault detection of freight trains. We initially present the axial shift strategy, which allows the MLP-like architecture to overcome the challenge of spatial invariance and effectively incorporate both local and global cues. We propose a dynamic distillation method without a pre-training teacher, including a dynamic teacher mechanism that can effectively eliminate the semantic discrepancy with the student model. Such an approach mines more abundant details from lower-level feature appearances and higher-level label semantics as the extra supervision signal, which utilizes efficient instance embedding to model the global spatial and semantic information. In addition, the proposed dynamic teacher can jointly train with students to further enhance the distillation efficiency. Extensive experiments executed on six typical fault datasets reveal that our approach outperforms the current state-of-the-art detectors and achieves the highest accuracy with real-time detection at a lower computational cost. DINO-Mix: Enhancing Visual Place Recognition with Foundational Vision Model and Feature Mixing

Utilizing visual place recognition (VPR) technology to ascertain the geographical location of publicly available images is a pressing issue for real-world VPR applications. Although most current VPR methods achieve favorable results under ideal conditions, their performance in complex environments, characterized by lighting variations, seasonal changes, and occlusions caused by moving objects, is generally unsatisfactory. In this study, we utilize the DINOv2 model as the backbone network for trimming and fine-tuning to extract robust image features. We propose a novel VPR architecture called DINO-Mix, which combines a foundational vision model with feature aggregation. This architecture relies on the powerful image feature extraction capabilities of foundational vision models. We employ an MLP-Mixer-based mix module to aggregate image features, resulting in globally robust and generalizable descriptors that enable high-precision VPR. We experimentally demonstrate that the proposed DINO-Mix architecture significantly outperforms current state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. In test sets having lighting variations, seasonal changes, and occlusions (Tokyo24/7, Nordland, SF-XL-Testv1), our proposed DINO-Mix architecture achieved Top-1 accuracy rates of 91.75%, 80.18%, and 82%, respectively. Compared with SOTA methods, our architecture exhibited an average accuracy improvement of 5.14%.

Tell2Design: A Dataset for Language-Guided Floor Plan Generation

We consider the task of generating designs directly from natural language descriptions, and consider floor plan generation as the initial research area. Language conditional generative models have recently been very successful in generating high-quality artistic images. However, designs must satisfy different constraints that are not present in generating artistic images, particularly spatial and relational constraints. We make multiple contributions to initiate research on this task. First, we introduce a novel dataset, \textit{Tell2Design} (T2D), which contains more than $80k$ floor plan designs associated with natural language instructions. Second, we propose a Sequence-to-Sequence model that can serve as a strong baseline for future research. Third, we benchmark this task with several text-conditional image generation models. We conclude by conducting human evaluations on the generated samples and providing an analysis of human performance. We hope our contributions will propel the research on language-guided design generation forward.

A Generic Stochastic Hybrid Car-following Model Based on Approximate Bayesian Computation

Car following (CF) models are fundamental to describing traffic dynamics. However, the CF behavior of human drivers is highly stochastic and nonlinear. As a result, identifying the best CF model has been challenging and controversial despite decades of research. Introduction of automated vehicles has further complicated this matter as their CF controllers remain proprietary, though their behavior appears different than human drivers. This paper develops a stochastic learning approach to integrate multiple CF models, rather than relying on a single model. The framework is based on approximate Bayesian computation that probabilistically concatenates a pool of CF models based on their relative likelihood of describing observed behavior. The approach, while data-driven, retains physical tractability and interpretability. Evaluation results using two datasets show that the proposed approach can better reproduce vehicle trajectories for both human driven and automated vehicles than any single CF model considered.

Deep Learning for Vascular Segmentation and Applications in Phase Contrast Tomography Imaging

Automated blood vessel segmentation is vital for biomedical imaging, as vessel changes indicate many pathologies. Still, precise segmentation is difficult due to the complexity of vascular structures, anatomical variations across patients, the scarcity of annotated public datasets, and the quality of images. We present a thorough literature review, highlighting the state of machine learning techniques across diverse organs. Our goal is to provide a foundation on the topic and identify a robust baseline model for application to vascular segmentation in a new imaging modality, Hierarchical Phase Contrast Tomography (HiP CT). Introduced in 2020 at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, HiP CT enables 3D imaging of complete organs at an unprecedented resolution of ca. 20mm per voxel, with the capability for localized zooms in selected regions down to 1mm per voxel without sectioning. We have created a training dataset with double annotator validated vascular data from three kidneys imaged with HiP CT in the context of the Human Organ Atlas Project. Finally, utilising the nnU Net model, we conduct experiments to assess the models performance on both familiar and unseen samples, employing vessel specific metrics. Our results show that while segmentations yielded reasonably high scores such as clDice values ranging from 0.82 to 0.88, certain errors persisted. Large vessels that collapsed due to the lack of hydrostatic pressure (HiP CT is an ex vivo technique) were segmented poorly. Moreover, decreased connectivity in finer vessels and higher segmentation errors at vessel boundaries were observed. Such errors obstruct the understanding of the structures by interrupting vascular tree connectivity. Through our review and outputs, we aim to set a benchmark for subsequent model evaluations using various modalities, especially with the HiP CT imaging database.

A Survey on Multimodal Large Language Models for Autonomous Driving

With the emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Vision Foundation Models (VFMs), multimodal AI systems benefiting from large models have the potential to equally perceive the real world, make decisions, and control tools as humans. In recent months, LLMs have shown widespread attention in autonomous driving and map systems. Despite its immense potential, there is still a lack of a comprehensive understanding of key challenges, opportunities, and future endeavors to apply in LLM driving systems. In this paper, we present a systematic investigation in this field. We first introduce the background of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), the multimodal models development using LLMs, and the history of autonomous driving. Then, we overview existing MLLM tools for driving, transportation, and map systems together with existing datasets and benchmarks. Moreover, we summarized the works in The 1st WACV Workshop on Large Language and Vision Models for Autonomous Driving (LLVM-AD), which is the first workshop of its kind regarding LLMs in autonomous driving. To further promote the development of this field, we also discuss several important problems regarding using MLLMs in autonomous driving systems that need to be solved by both academia and industry.

On the alternating randomized block Kaczmarz method

The block Kaczmarz method and its variants are designed for solving the over-determined linear system. They involve iteratively projecting the current point onto the solution space of a subset of constraints. In this work, by alternately dealing with two subproblems (i.e., linear system with multiple right-hand sides) using the block Kaczmarz method, we propose the {\it Alternating Randomized Block Kaczmarz} (ARBK) method to solve the linear matrix equation $AXB=F$, which incorporates a randomized index selection scheme to determine the subset of constraints. The convergence analysis reveals that the ARBK method has a linear convergence rate bounded by an explicit expression. Several numerical studies have been conducted to validate the theoretical findings.

End of the World Brane meets $T\bar{T}$

End of the world branes in AdS have been recently used to study problems deeply connected to quantum gravity, such as black hole evaporation and holographic cosmology. With non-critical tension and Neumann boundary condition, the end of the world brane often represents part of the degrees of freedom in AdS gravity and geometrically it is only part of the entire boundary. On the other hand, holographic $T\bar{T}$ deformation can also give a boundary as a cutoff surface for AdS gravity. In this paper we consider AdS gravity with both the end of the world boundary and the cutoff boundary. Using partial reduction we obtain a brane world gravity glued to a $T\bar{T}$ deformed bath. We compute both entanglement entropy and Page curve, and find agreement between the holographic results and island formula results.

ContactGen: Generative Contact Modeling for Grasp Generation

This paper presents a novel object-centric contact representation ContactGen for hand-object interaction. The ContactGen comprises three components: a contact map indicates the contact location, a part map represents the contact hand part, and a direction map tells the contact direction within each part. Given an input object, we propose a conditional generative model to predict ContactGen and adopt model-based optimization to predict diverse and geometrically feasible grasps. Experimental results demonstrate our method can generate high-fidelity and diverse human grasps for various objects. Project page: https://stevenlsw.github.io/contactgen/

Rényi Entropy with Surface Defects in Six Dimensions

We compute the surface defect contribution to Rényi entropy and supersymmetric Rényi entropy in six dimensions. We first compute the surface defect contribution to Rényi entropy for free fields, which verifies a previous formula about entanglement entropy with surface defect. Using conformal map to $S^1_β\times H^{d-1}$ we develop a heat kernel approach to compute the defect contribution to Rényi entropy, which is applicable for $p$-dimensional defect in general $d$-dimensional free fields. Using the same geometry $S^1_β\times H^5$ with an additional background field, one can construct the supersymmetric refinement of the ordinary Rényi entropy for six-dimensional $(2,0)$ theories. We find that the surface defect contribution to supersymmetric Rényi entropy has a simple scaling as polynomial of Rényi index in the large $N$ limit. We also discuss how to connect the free field results and large $N$ results.

Approximation algorithms for $k$-submodular maximization subject to a knapsack constraint

In this paper, we study the problem of maximizing $k$-submodular functions subject to a knapsack constraint. For monotone objective functions, we present a $\frac{1}{2}(1-e^{-2})\approx 0.432$ greedy approximation algorithm. For the non-monotone case, we are the first to consider the knapsack problem and provide a greedy-type combinatorial algorithm with approximation ratio $\frac{1}{3}(1-e^{-3})\approx 0.317$.

Graph-Based Interaction-Aware Multimodal 2D Vehicle Trajectory Prediction using Diffusion Graph Convolutional Networks

Predicting vehicle trajectories is crucial for ensuring automated vehicle operation efficiency and safety, particularly on congested multi-lane highways. In such dynamic environments, a vehicle's motion is determined by its historical behaviors as well as interactions with surrounding vehicles. These intricate interactions arise from unpredictable motion patterns, leading to a wide range of driving behaviors that warrant in-depth investigation. This study presents the Graph-based Interaction-aware Multi-modal Trajectory Prediction (GIMTP) framework, designed to probabilistically predict future vehicle trajectories by effectively capturing these interactions. Within this framework, vehicles' motions are conceptualized as nodes in a time-varying graph, and the traffic interactions are represented by a dynamic adjacency matrix. To holistically capture both spatial and temporal dependencies embedded in this dynamic adjacency matrix, the methodology incorporates the Diffusion Graph Convolutional Network (DGCN), thereby providing a graph embedding of both historical states and future states. Furthermore, we employ a driving intention-specific feature fusion, enabling the adaptive integration of historical and future embeddings for enhanced intention recognition and trajectory prediction. This model gives two-dimensional predictions for each mode of longitudinal and lateral driving behaviors and offers probabilistic future paths with corresponding probabilities, addressing the challenges of complex vehicle interactions and multi-modality of driving behaviors. Validation using real-world trajectory datasets demonstrates the efficiency and potential.

Simulation study of BESIII with stitched CMOS pixel detector using ACTS

Reconstruction of tracks of charged particles with high precision is very crucial for HEP experiments to achieve their physics goals. As the tracking detector of BESIII experiment, the BESIII drift chamber has suffered from aging effects resulting in degraded tracking performance after operation for about 15 years. To preserve and enhance the tracking performance of BESIII, one of the proposals is to add one layer of thin CMOS pixel sensor in cylindrical shape based on the state-of-the-art stitching technology, between the beam pipe and the drift chamber. The improvement of tracking performance of BESIII with such an additional pixel detector compared to that with only the existing drift chamber is studied using the modern common tracking software ACTS, which provides a set of detector-agnostic and highly performant tracking algorithms that have demonstrated promising performance for a few high energy physics and nuclear physics experiments.

Prompting Vision Language Model with Knowledge from Large Language Model for Knowledge-Based VQA

Knowledge-based visual question answering is a very challenging and widely concerned task. Previous methods adopts the implicit knowledge in large language models (LLM) to achieve excellent results, but we argue that existing methods may suffer from biasing understanding of the image and insufficient knowledge to solve the problem. In this paper, we propose PROOFREAD -PROmpting vision language model with knOwledge From laRgE lAnguage moDel, a novel, lightweight and efficient kowledge-based VQA framework, which make the vision language model and the large language model cooperate to give full play to their respective strengths and bootstrap each other. In detail, our proposed method uses LLM to obtain knowledge explicitly, uses the vision language model which can see the image to get the knowledge answer, and introduces knowledge perceiver to filter out knowledge that is harmful for getting the correct final answer. Experimental results on two datasets prove the effectiveness of our approach. Our method outperforms all state-of-the-art methods on the A-OKVQA dataset in two settings and also achieves relatively good performance on the OKVQA dataset.
