The role of electron and phonon temperatures in the helicity-independent all-optical switching of GdFeCo

Ultrafast optical heating of the electrons in ferrimagnetic metals can result in all-optical switching (AOS) of the magnetization. Here we report quantitative measurements of the temperature rise of GdFeCo thin films during helicity-independent AOS. Critical switching fluences are obtained as a function of the initial temperature of the sample and for laser pulse durations from 55 fs to 15 ps. We conclude that non-equilibrium phenomena are necessary for helicity-independent AOS, although the peak electron temperature does not play a critical role. Pump-probe time-resolved experiments show that the switching time increases as the pulse duration increases, with 10 ps pulses resulting in switching times of ~sim 13 ps. These results raise new questions about the fundamental mechanism of helicity-independent AOS.

Electron-phonon interaction during optically induced ultrafast magnetization dynamics of Au/GdFeCo bilayers

The temperature evolution of GdFeCo electrons following optical heating plays a key role in all optical switching of GdFeCo and is primarily governed by the strength of coupling between electrons and phonons. Typically, the strength of electron-phonon coupling in a metal is deduced by monitoring changes in reflectance following optical heating and then analyzing the transient reflectance with a simple two-temperature thermal model. In a magnetic metal, the change in reflectance cannot be assumed to depend only the electron and phonon temperatures because a metal's reflectance also depends on the magnetization. To deduce the electron-phonon coupling constant in GdFeCo, we analyze thermal transport in Au and GdFeCo bilayers following optical heating of the GdFeCo electrons. We use the reflectance of the Au layer to monitor the temperature evolution of the Au phonons. By interpreting the response of the bilayer to heating with a thermal model, we determine the electron-phonon coupling constant in GdFeCo to be 6 x 10^17 W/(m^3-K) corresponding to an electron-phonon relaxation time in GdFeCo of ~150 fs.

Applications of CGO Solutions on Coupled-Physics Inverse Problems

This paper surveys inverse problems arising in several coupled-physics imaging modalities for both medical and geophysical purposes. These include Photo-acoustic Tomography (PAT), Thermo-acoustic Tomography (TAT), Electro-Seismic Conversion, Transient Elastrography (TE) and Acousto-Electric Tomography (AET). These inverse problems typically consists of multiple inverse steps, each of which corresponds to one of the wave propagations involved. The review focus on those steps known as the inverse problems with internal data, in which the complex geometrical optics (CGO) solutions to the underlying equations turn out to be useful in showing the uniqueness and stability in determining the desired information.

Observability transition in real networks

We consider the observability model in networks with arbitrary topologies. We introduce a system of coupled nonlinear equations, valid under the locally tree-like ansatz, to describe the size of the largest observable cluster as a function of the fraction of directly observable nodes present in the network. We perform a systematic analysis on 95 real-world graphs and compare our theoretical predictions with numerical simulations of the observability model. Our method provides almost perfect predictions in the majority of the cases, even for networks with very large values of the clustering coefficient. Potential applications of our theory include the development of efficient and scalable algorithms for real-time surveillance of social networks, and monitoring of technological networks.

A Time-constraint Satisfying and Cost-reducing node evaluation metric for Message Routing in Mobile Crowd Sensing Networks

In mobile crowd sensing networks data forwarding through opportunistic contacts between participants. Data is replicated to encountered participants. For optimizing data delivery ratio and reducing redundant data a lot of data forwarding schemes, which selectively replicate data to encountered participants through node's data forwarding metric are proposed. However most of them neglect a kind of redundant data whose Time-To-Live is expired. For reducing this kind of redundant data we proposed a new method to evaluate node's data forwarding metric, which is used to measure the node's probability of forwarding data to destination within data's constraint time. The method is divided into two parts. The first is evaluating nodes whether have possibility to contact destination within time constraint based on transient cluster. We propose a method to detect node's transient cluster, which is based on node's contact rate. Only node, which has possibility to contact destination, has chances to the second step. It effectively reduces the computational complexity. The second is calculating data forwarding probability of node to destination according to individual ICT (inter contact time) distribution. Evaluation results show that our proposed transient cluster detection method is more simple and quick. And from two aspects of data delivery ratio and network overhead our approach outperforms other existing data forwarding approach.

Zero-Shot Hashing via Transferring Supervised Knowledge

Hashing has shown its efficiency and effectiveness in facilitating large-scale multimedia applications. Supervised knowledge e.g. semantic labels or pair-wise relationship) associated to data is capable of significantly improving the quality of hash codes and hash functions. However, confronted with the rapid growth of newly-emerging concepts and multimedia data on the Web, existing supervised hashing approaches may easily suffer from the scarcity and validity of supervised information due to the expensive cost of manual labelling. In this paper, we propose a novel hashing scheme, termed \emph{zero-shot hashing} (ZSH), which compresses images of "unseen" categories to binary codes with hash functions learned from limited training data of "seen" categories. Specifically, we project independent data labels i.e. 0/1-form label vectors) into semantic embedding space, where semantic relationships among all the labels can be precisely characterized and thus seen supervised knowledge can be transferred to unseen classes. Moreover, in order to cope with the semantic shift problem, we rotate the embedded space to more suitably align the embedded semantics with the low-level visual feature space, thereby alleviating the influence of semantic gap. In the meantime, to exert positive effects on learning high-quality hash functions, we further propose to preserve local structural property and discrete nature in binary codes. Besides, we develop an efficient alternating algorithm to solve the ZSH model. Extensive experiments conducted on various real-life datasets show the superior zero-shot image retrieval performance of ZSH as compared to several state-of-the-art hashing methods.

Bidirectional Long-Short Term Memory for Video Description

Video captioning has been attracting broad research attention in multimedia community. However, most existing approaches either ignore temporal information among video frames or just employ local contextual temporal knowledge. In this work, we propose a novel video captioning framework, termed as \emph{Bidirectional Long-Short Term Memory} (BiLSTM), which deeply captures bidirectional global temporal structure in video. Specifically, we first devise a joint visual modelling approach to encode video data by combining a forward LSTM pass, a backward LSTM pass, together with visual features from Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Then, we inject the derived video representation into the subsequent language model for initialization. The benefits are in two folds: 1) comprehensively preserving sequential and visual information; and 2) adaptively learning dense visual features and sparse semantic representations for videos and sentences, respectively. We verify the effectiveness of our proposed video captioning framework on a commonly-used benchmark, i.e., Microsoft Video Description (MSVD) corpus, and the experimental results demonstrate that the superiority of the proposed approach as compared to several state-of-the-art methods.

The Formation and Imprinting of Network Effects Among the Business Elite

The business elite constitutes a small but strikingly influential subset of the population, oftentimes affecting important societal outcomes such as the consolidation of political power, the adoption of corporate governance practices, and the stability of national economies more broadly. Here we analyze a unique dataset of all MBA students at a top 5 MBA program. After matching students on all available characteristics (e.g., age, grade scores, industry experience, etc.) - i.e. creating twin pairs - we find that the distinguishing characteristics between students who do well in job placement and those who do not is their network. Further, we find that the network differences between the successful and unsuccessful students develops within the first month of class and persists thereafter, suggesting a network imprinting that is persistent. Finally, we find that these effects are pronounced for students who are at the extreme ends of the distribution on other measures of success - students with the best expected job placement do particularly poorly without the right network (descenders), whereas students with worst expected job placement pull themselves to the top of the placement hierarchy (ascenders) with the right network.

Computational multiheterodyne spectroscopy

Dual comb spectroscopy allows for high-resolution spectra to be measured over broad bandwidths, but an essential requirement for coherent integration is the availability of a phase reference. Usually, this means that the combs' phase and timing errors must be measured and either minimized by stabilization or removed by correction, limiting the technique's applicability. In this work, we demonstrate that it is possible to extract the phase and timing signals of a multiheterodyne spectrum completely computationally, without any extra measurements or optical elements. These techniques are viable even when the relative linewidth exceeds the repetition rate difference, and can tremendously simplify any dual comb system. By reconceptualizing frequency combs in terms of the temporal structure of their phase noise, not their frequency stability, we are able to greatly expand the scope of multiheterodyne techniques.

Influence Activation Model: A New Perspective in Social Influence Analysis and Social Network Evolution

What drives the propensity for the social network dynamics? Social influence is believed to drive both off-line and on-line human behavior, however it has not been considered as a driver of social network evolution. Our analysis suggest that, while the network structure affects the spread of influence in social networks, the network is in turn shaped by social influence activity (i.e., the process of social influence wherein one person's attitudes and behaviors affect another's). To that end, we develop a novel model of network evolution where the dynamics of network follow the mechanism of influence propagation, which are not captured by the existing network evolution models. Our experiments confirm the predictions of our model and demonstrate the important role that social influence can play in the process of network evolution. As well exploring the reason of social network evolution, different genres of social influence have been spotted having different effects on the network dynamics. These findings and methods are essential to both our understanding of the mechanisms that drive network evolution and our knowledge of the role of social influence in shaping the network structure.

Gender Differences in Communication Behaviors, Spatial Proximity Patterns, and Mobility Habits

The existence of gender differences in the structure and composition of social networks is a well established finding in the social and behavioral sciences, but researchers continue to debate whether structural, dispositional, or life course factors are the primary driver of these differences. In this paper we extend work on gender differences in social networks to patterns of interaction, propinquity, and connectivity captured via a social sensing platform comprised of an ensemble of individuals' phone calls, text messaging, face-to-face interactions, and traces of their mobility activities. We attempt to isolate dispositional from other factors by focusing on a relatively homogeneous population on a relatively closed setting at the same stage in the life course. Analysis across three different networks along with mobility data reveals systematic gender differences in terms of communicative, distributional, mobility, and spatial proximity tendencies. Most importantly, some patterns observed in the communication network (e.g. stronger same-gender preference for women) are found to be reversed in the spatial proximity context, with men displaying a greater tendency to spend time in a narrower (and thus more predictable) range of spaces with same-gender peers than women. These findings provide robust and novel evidence for the powerful effect of gender in structuring behavior across a wide range of communication and mobility behaviors, validating and extending recent work pointing to differences of socio-cultural and evolutionary origin in the styles of sociability and interaction characteristic of men and women.

Towards Empathetic Human-Robot Interactions

Since the late 1990s when speech companies began providing their customer-service software in the market, people have gotten used to speaking to machines. As people interact more often with voice and gesture controlled machines, they expect the machines to recognize different emotions, and understand other high level communication features such as humor, sarcasm and intention. In order to make such communication possible, the machines need an empathy module in them which can extract emotions from human speech and behavior and can decide the correct response of the robot. Although research on empathetic robots is still in the early stage, we described our approach using signal processing techniques, sentiment analysis and machine learning algorithms to make robots that can "understand" human emotion. We propose Zara the Supergirl as a prototype system of empathetic robots. It is a software based virtual android, with an animated cartoon character to present itself on the screen. She will get "smarter" and more empathetic through its deep learning algorithms, and by gathering more data and learning from it. In this paper, we present our work so far in the areas of deep learning of emotion and sentiment recognition, as well as humor recognition. We hope to explore the future direction of android development and how it can help improve people's lives.

Covalent Functionalization and Passivation of Exfoliated Black Phosphorus via Aryl Diazonium Chemistry

Functionalization of atomically thin nanomaterials enables the tailoring of their chemical, optical, and electronic properties. Exfoliated black phosphorus, a layered two-dimensional semiconductor exhibiting favorable charge carrier mobility, tunable bandgap, and highly anisotropic properties, is chemically reactive and degrades rapidly in ambient conditions. In contrast, here we show that covalent aryl diazonium functionalization suppresses the chemical degradation of exfoliated black phosphorus even following weeks of ambient exposure. This chemical modification scheme spontaneously forms phosphorus-carbon bonds, has a reaction rate sensitive to the aryl diazonium substituent, and alters the electronic properties of exfoliated black phosphorus, ultimately yielding a strong, tunable p-type doping that simultaneously improves field-effect transistor mobility and on/off current ratio. This chemical functionalization pathway controllably modifies the properties of exfoliated black phosphorus, thus improving its prospects for nanoelectronic applications.

Model for multi-shot all-thermal all-optical switching in ferromagnets

All optical magnetic switching (AOS) is a recently observed rich and puzzling phenomenon that offers promis- ing technological applications. However, fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanisms remains elusive. Here we present a new model for multi-shot helicity-dependent AOS in ferromagnetic materials based on a purely heat-driven mechanism in the presence of Magnetic Circular Dichroism (MCD). We predict that AOS should be possible with as little as 0.5% of MCD, after a minimum number of laser shots. Finally, we re- produce previous AOS results by simulating the sweeping of a laser beam on an FePtC granular ferromagnetic film.

Vehicular Communications for 5G Cooperative Small Cell Networks

The cooperative transmission is an effective approach for vehicular communications to improve the wireless transmission capacity and reliability in the fifth generation (5G) small cell networks. Based on distances between the vehicle and cooperative small cell BSs, the cooperative probability and the coverage probability have been derived for 5G cooperative small cell networks where small cell base stations (BSs) follow Poisson point process distributions. Furthermore, the vehicular handoff rate and the vehicular overhead ratio have been proposed to evaluate the vehicular mobility performance in 5G cooperative small cell networks. To balance the vehicular communication capacity and the vehicular handoff ratio, an optimal vehicular overhead ratio can be achieved by adjusting the cooperative threshold of 5G cooperative small cell networks.
