Optimized spin-injection efficiency and spin MOSFET operation based on low-barrier ferromagnet/insulator/n-Si tunnel contact

We theoretically investigate the spin injection in different FM/I/n-Si tunnel contacts by using the lattice NEGF method. We find that the tunnel contacts with low barrier materials such as TiO$_2$ and Ta$_{2}$O$_{5}$, have much lower resistances than the conventional barrier materials, resulting in a wider and attainable optimum parameters window for improving the spin injection efficiency and MR ratio of a vertical spin MOSFET. Additionally, we find the spin asymmetry coefficient of TiO$_2$ tunnel contact has a negative value, while that of Ta$_{2}$O$_{5}$ contact can be tuned between positive and negative values, by changing the parameters.

Electrostatic properties and current transport of two-dimensional Schottky barrier diode

Recently demonstrated metal-semiconductor heterojunctions with few-atom thickness show their promise as 2D Schottky contacts for future integrated circuits and nanoelectronics. The theory for 3D Schottky contacts, however, fails on these low-dimensional systems. Here, we propose a new model that yields carrier distribution and potential profile across the 2D metal-semiconductor heterojunction under the equilibrium condition, based on the input from first-principle calculations. Our calculation also suggests that, at the same forward bias, the current density of a stack of 2D graphene-phosphorene Schottky diodes may be ten thousand times higher than that of a traditional 3D Schottky diode and offer less energy dissipation.

Codebook Design for Channel Feedback in Lens-Based Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Systems

The number of radio frequency (RF) chains can be reduced through beam selection in lens-based millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems, where the equivalent channel between RF chains and multiple users is required at the BS to achieve the multi-user multiplexing gain. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no dedicated codebook for the equivalent channel feedback in such systems. In this paper, we propose the dimension-reduced subspace codebook, which achieves a significant reduction of the feedback overhead and codebook size. Specifically, we firstly utilize the limited scattering property of mmWave channels to generate the high-dimensional vectors in the channel subspace. Then, according to the function of lens and beam selector, we propose the dimension-reduced subspace codebook to quantize the equivalent channel vector. Moreover, the performance analysis of the proposed codebook is also provided. Finally, simulation results show the superior performance of the proposed dimension-reduced subspace codebook compared with conventional codebooks.

Vulnerability and co-susceptibility determine the size of network cascades

In a network, a local disturbance can propagate and eventually cause a substantial part of the system to fail, in cascade events that are easy to conceptualize but extraordinarily difficult to predict. Here, we develop a statistical framework that can predict cascade size distributions by incorporating two ingredients only: the vulnerability of individual components and the co-susceptibility of groups of components (i.e., their tendency to fail together). Using cascades in power grids as a representative example, we show that correlations between component failures define structured and often surprisingly large groups of co-susceptible components. Aside from their implications for blackout studies, these results provide insights and a new modeling framework for understanding cascades in financial systems, food webs, and complex networks in general.

3-D phononic crystals with ultra-wide band gaps

In this paper gradient based topology optimization (TO) is used to discover 3-D phononic structures that exhibit ultra-wide normalized all-angle all-mode band gaps. The challenging computational task of repeated 3-D phononic band-structure evaluations is accomplished by a combination of a fast mixed variational eigenvalue solver and distributed Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) parallel computations. The TO algorithm utilizes the material distribution-based approach and a gradient-based optimizer. The design sensitivity for the mixed variational eigenvalue problem is derived using the adjoint method and is implemented through highly efficient vectorization techniques. We present optimized results for two-material simple cubic (SC), body centered cubic (BCC), and face centered cubic (FCC) crystal structures and show that in each of these cases different initial designs converge to single inclusion network topologies within their corresponding primitive cells. The optimized results show that large phononic stop bands for bulk wave propagation can be achieved at lower than close packed spherical configurations leading to lighter unit cells. For tungsten carbide - epoxy crystals we identify all angle all mode normalized stop bands exceeding 100%, which is larger than what is possible with only spherical inclusions.

Possible Superconductivity in Electron-doped Chromium Pnictide LaOCrAs

We constructed an effective tight-binding model with five Cr $3d$ orbitals for LaOCrAs according to first-principles calculations. Basing on this model, we investigated possible superconductivity induced by correlations in doped LaOCrAs using the functional renormalization group (FRG). We find that there are two domes of superconductivity in electron-doped LaOCrAs. With increasing electron doping, the ground state of the system evolves from G-type antiferromagnetism in the parent compound to an incipient $s_\pm$-wave superconducting phase dominated by electron bands derived from the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbital as the filling is above $4.2$ electrons per site on the $d$-orbitals of Cr. The gap function has strong octet anisotropy on the Fermi pocket around the zone center and diminishes on the other pockets. In electron over-doped LaOCrAs, the system develops $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting phase and the active band derives from the $d_{xy}$ orbital. Inbetween the two superconducting domes, a time-reversal symmetry breaking $s+id$ SC phase is likely to occur. We also find $s_\pm$-wave superconducting phase in the hole-doped case.

Elasticity, Flexibility and Ideal Strength of Borophenes

We study the mechanical properties of two-dimensional (2D) boron, borophenes, by first-principles calculations. The recently synthesized borophene with 1/6 concentration of hollow hexagons (HH) is shown to have in-plane modulus C up to 210 N/m and bending stiffness as low as D = 0.39 eV. Thus, its Foppl-von Karman number per unit area, defined as C/D, reaches 568 nm-2, over twofold higher than graphene's value, establishing the borophene as one of the most flexible materials. Yet, the borophene has a specific modulus of 346 m2/s2 and ideal strengths of 16 N/m, rivaling those (453 m2/s2 and 34 N/m) of graphene. In particular, its structural fluxionality enabled by delocalized multi-center chemical bonding favors structural phase transitions under tension, which result in exceptionally small breaking strains yet highly ductile breaking behavior. These mechanical properties can be further tailored by varying the HH concentration, and the boron sheet without HHs can even be stiffer than graphene against tension. The record high flexibility combined with excellent elasticity in boron sheets can be utilized for designing composites and flexible systems.

The Unfolding and Control of Network Cascades

A characteristic property of networks is their ability to propagate influences, such as infectious diseases, behavioral changes, and failures. An especially important class of such contagious dynamics is that of cascading processes. These processes include, for example, cascading failures in infrastructure systems, extinctions cascades in ecological networks, and information cascades in social systems. In this review, we discuss recent progress and challenges associated with the modeling, prediction, detection, and control of cascades in networks.

Channel Measurements and Models for High-Speed Train Wireless Communication Systems in Tunnel Scenarios: A Survey

The rapid developments of high-speed trains (HSTs) introduce new challenges to HST wireless communication systems. Realistic HST channel models play a critical role in designing and evaluating HST communication systems. Due to the length limitation, bounding of tunnel itself, and waveguide effect, channel characteristics in tunnel scenarios are very different from those in other HST scenarios. Therefore, accurate tunnel channel models considering both large-scale and small-scale fading characteristics are essential for HST communication systems. Moreover, certain characteristics of tunnel channels have not been investigated sufficiently. This article provides a comprehensive review of the measurement campaigns in tunnels and presents some tunnel channel models using various modeling methods. Finally, future directions in HST tunnel channel measurements and modeling are discussed.

Recurrent Image Captioner: Describing Images with Spatial-Invariant Transformation and Attention Filtering

Along with the prosperity of recurrent neural network in modelling sequential data and the power of attention mechanism in automatically identify salient information, image captioning, a.k.a., image description, has been remarkably advanced in recent years. Nonetheless, most existing paradigms may suffer from the deficiency of invariance to images with different scaling, rotation, etc.; and effective integration of standalone attention to form a holistic end-to-end system. In this paper, we propose a novel image captioning architecture, termed Recurrent Image Captioner (\textbf{RIC}), which allows visual encoder and language decoder to coherently cooperate in a recurrent manner. Specifically, we first equip CNN-based visual encoder with a differentiable layer to enable spatially invariant transformation of visual signals. Moreover, we deploy an attention filter module (differentiable) between encoder and decoder to dynamically determine salient visual parts. We also employ bidirectional LSTM to preprocess sentences for generating better textual representations. Besides, we propose to exploit variational inference to optimize the whole architecture. Extensive experimental results on three benchmark datasets (i.e., Flickr8k, Flickr30k and MS COCO) demonstrate the superiority of our proposed architecture as compared to most of the state-of-the-art methods.

Binary Subspace Coding for Query-by-Image Video Retrieval

The query-by-image video retrieval (QBIVR) task has been attracting considerable research attention recently. However, most existing methods represent a video by either aggregating or projecting all its frames into a single datum point, which may easily cause severe information loss. In this paper, we propose an efficient QBIVR framework to enable an effective and efficient video search with image query. We first define a similarity-preserving distance metric between an image and its orthogonal projection in the subspace of the video, which can be equivalently transformed to a Maximum Inner Product Search (MIPS) problem. Besides, to boost the efficiency of solving the MIPS problem, we propose two asymmetric hashing schemes, which bridge the domain gap of images and videos. The first approach, termed Inner-product Binary Coding (IBC), preserves the inner relationships of images and videos in a common Hamming space. To further improve the retrieval efficiency, we devise a Bilinear Binary Coding (BBC) approach, which employs compact bilinear projections instead of a single large projection matrix. Extensive experiments have been conducted on four real-world video datasets to verify the effectiveness of our proposed approaches as compared to the state-of-the-arts.

Chinese/English mixed Character Segmentation as Semantic Segmentation

OCR character segmentation for multilingual printed documents is difficult due to the diversity of different linguistic characters. Previous approaches mainly focus on monolingual texts and are not suitable for multilingual-lingual cases. In this work, we particularly tackle the Chinese/English mixed case by reframing it as a semantic segmentation problem. We take advantage of the successful architecture called fully convolutional networks (FCN) in the field of semantic segmentation. Given a wide enough receptive field, FCN can utilize the necessary context around a horizontal position to determinate whether this is a splitting point or not. As a deep neural architecture, FCN can automatically learn useful features from raw text line images. Although trained on synthesized samples with simulated random disturbance, our FCN model generalizes well to real-world samples. The experimental results show that our model significantly outperforms the previous methods.

Analysis of Link Formation, Persistence and Dissolution in NetSense Data

We study a unique behavioral network data set (based on periodic surveys and on electronic logs of dyadic contact via smartphones) collected at the University of Notre Dame. The participants are a sample of members of the entering class of freshmen in the fall of 2011 whose opinions on a wide variety of political and social issues and activities on campus were regularly recorded - at the beginning and end of each semester - for the first three years of their residence on campus. We create a communication activity network implied by call and text data, and a friendship network based on surveys. Both networks are limited to students participating in the NetSense surveys. We aim at finding student traits and activities on which agreements correlate well with formation and persistence of links while disagreements are highly correlated with non-existence or dissolution of links in the two social networks that we created. Using statistical analysis and machine learning, we observe several traits and activities displaying such correlations, thus being of potential use to predict social network evolution.

Embedding Deep Metric for Person Re-identication A Study Against Large Variations

Person re-identification is challenging due to the large variations of pose, illumination, occlusion and camera view. Owing to these variations, the pedestrian data is distributed as highly-curved manifolds in the feature space, despite the current convolutional neural networks (CNN)'s capability of feature extraction. However, the distribution is unknown, so it is difficult to use the geodesic distance when comparing two samples. In practice, the current deep embedding methods use the Euclidean distance for the training and test. On the other hand, the manifold learning methods suggest to use the Euclidean distance in the local range, combining with the graphical relationship between samples, for approximating the geodesic distance. From this point of view, selecting suitable positive i.e. intra-class) training samples within a local range is critical for training the CNN embedding, especially when the data has large intra-class variations. In this paper, we propose a novel moderate positive sample mining method to train robust CNN for person re-identification, dealing with the problem of large variation. In addition, we improve the learning by a metric weight constraint, so that the learned metric has a better generalization ability. Experiments show that these two strategies are effective in learning robust deep metrics for person re-identification, and accordingly our deep model significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on several benchmarks of person re-identification. Therefore, the study presented in this paper may be useful in inspiring new designs of deep models for person re-identification.

Wireless Fractal Cellular Networks

With the seamless coverage of wireless cellular networks in modern society, it is interesting to consider the shape of wireless cellular coverage. Is the shape a regular hexagon, an irregular polygon, or another complex geometrical shape? Based on fractal theory, the statistical characteristic of the wireless cellular coverage boundary is determined by the measured wireless cellular data collected from Shanghai, China. The measured results indicate that the wireless cellular coverage boundary presents an extremely irregular geometrical shape, which is also called a statistical fractal shape. Moreover, the statistical fractal characteristics of the wireless cellular coverage boundary have been validated by values of the Hurst parameter estimated in angular scales. The statistical fractal characteristics of the wireless cellular coverage boundary can be used to evaluate and design the handoff scheme of mobile user terminals in wireless cellular networks.

Ultrafast Magnetization Reversal by Picosecond Electrical Pulses

The field of spintronics involves the study of both spin and charge transport in solid state devices with a view toward increasing their functionality and efficiency. Alternatively, the field of ultrafast magnetism focuses on the use of femtosecond laser pulses to excite electrons in magnetic materials, which allows the magnetic order to be dramatically changed on unprecedented sub-picosecond time-scales. Here, we unite these two distinct research activities by using picosecond electrical pulses to rapidly excite electrons in a magnetic metal. We are able to deterministically and repetitively reverse the magnetization of a GdFeCo film with sub-10 picosecond electrical pulses. The magnetization reverses in ~10ps, which is more than an order of magnitude faster than any other electrically controlled magnetic switching. We attribute the deterministic switching of the magnetization to ultrafast excitation of the electrons, a fundamentally different mechanism from other current driven switching mechanisms such as spin-transfer-torque (STT) or spin-orbit-torque (SOT). The energy density required for switching is measured and the process is found to be efficient, projecting to only 4 fJ needed to switch a (20 nm)^3 cell, which is comparable to other state-of-the-art STT-MRAM memory devices. This discovery will launch a new field of research into picosecond spintronic phenomena and devices.

A Unified Model for Differential Expression Analysis of RNA-seq Data via L1-Penalized Linear Regression

The RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) is becoming increasingly popular for quantifying gene expression levels. Since the RNA-seq measurements are relative in nature, between-sample normalization of counts is an essential step in differential expression (DE) analysis. The normalization of existing DE detection algorithms is ad hoc and performed once for all prior to DE detection, which may be suboptimal since ideally normalization should be based on non-DE genes only and thus coupled with DE detection. We propose a unified statistical model for joint normalization and DE detection of log-transformed RNA-seq data. Sample-specific normalization factors are modeled as unknown parameters in the gene-wise linear models and jointly estimated with the regression coefficients. By imposing sparsity-inducing L1 penalty (or mixed L1/L2-norm for multiple treatment conditions) on the regression coefficients, we formulate the problem as a penalized least-squares regression problem and apply the augmented lagrangian method to solve it. Simulation studies show that the proposed model and algorithms outperform existing methods in terms of detection power and false-positive rate when more than half of the genes are differentially expressed and/or when the up- and down-regulated genes among DE genes are unbalanced in amount.

The Inverse Problem for the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on Lorentzian manifolds

We consider the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map $Λ$ on a cylinder-like Lorentzian manifold related to the wave equation related to the metric $g$, a magnetic field $A$ and a potential $q$. We show that we can recover the jet of $g,A,q$ on the boundary from $Λ$ up to a gauge transformation in a stable way. We also show that $Λ$ recovers the following three invariants in a stable way: the lens relation of $g$, and the light ray transforms of $A$ and $q$. Moreover, $Λ$ is an FIO away from the diagonal with a canonical relation given by the lens relation. We present applications for recovery of $A$ and $q$ in a logarithmically stable way in the Minkowski case, and uniqueness with partial data.
