A Unified Successive Pseudo-Convex Approximation Framework

In this paper, we propose a successive pseudo-convex approximation algorithm to efficiently compute stationary points for a large class of possibly nonconvex optimization problems. The stationary points are obtained by solving a sequence of successively refined approximate problems, each of which is much easier to solve than the original problem. To achieve convergence, the approximate problem only needs to exhibit a weak form of convexity, namely, pseudo-convexity. We show that the proposed framework not only includes as special cases a number of existing methods, for example, the gradient method and the Jacobi algorithm, but also leads to new algorithms which enjoy easier implementation and faster convergence speed. We also propose a novel line search method for nondifferentiable optimization problems, which is carried out over a properly constructed differentiable function with the benefit of a simplified implementation as compared to state-of-the-art line search techniques that directly operate on the original nondifferentiable objective function. The advantages of the proposed algorithm are shown, both theoretically and numerically, by several example applications, namely, MIMO broadcast channel capacity computation, energy efficiency maximization in massive MIMO systems and LASSO in sparse signal recovery.

Terahertz multi-heterodyne spectroscopy using laser frequency combs

Frequency combs based on terahertz quantum cascade lasers feature broadband coverage and high output powers in a compact package, making them an attractive option for broadband spectroscopy. Here, we demonstrate the first multi-heterodyne spectroscopy using two terahertz quantum cascade laser combs. With just 100 $μ$s of integration time, we achieve peak signal-to-noise ratios exceeding 60 dB and a spectral coverage greater than 250 GHz centered at 2.8 THz. Even with room-temperature detectors we are able to achieve peak signal-to-noise ratios of 50 dB, and as a proof-of-principle we use these combs to measure the broadband transmission spectrum of etalon samples. Finally, we show that with proper signal processing, it is possible to extend the multi-heterodyne spectroscopy to quantum cascade laser combs operating in pulsed mode, greatly expanding the range of quantum cascade lasers that could be suitable for these techniques.

Multidimensional Sparse Recovery for MIMO Channel Parameter Estimation

Multipath propagation is a common phenomenon in wireless communication. Knowledge of propagation path parameters such as complex channel gain, propagation delay or angle-of-arrival provides valuable information on the user position and facilitates channel response estimation. A major challenge in channel parameter estimation lies in its multidimensional nature, which leads to large-scale estimation problems which are difficult to solve. Current approaches of sparse recovery for multidimensional parameter estimation aim at simultaneously estimating all channel parameters by solving one large-scale estimation problem. In contrast to that we propose a sparse recovery method which relies on decomposing the multidimensional problem into successive one-dimensional parameter estimation problems, which are much easier to solve and less sensitive to off-grid effects, while providing proper parameter pairing. Our proposed decomposition relies on convex optimization in terms of nuclear norm minimization and we present an efficient implementation in terms of the recently developed STELA algorithm.

Learning Binary Codes and Binary Weights for Efficient Classification

This paper proposes a generic formulation that significantly expedites the training and deployment of image classification models, particularly under the scenarios of many image categories and high feature dimensions. As a defining property, our method represents both the images and learned classifiers using binary hash codes, which are simultaneously learned from the training data. Classifying an image thereby reduces to computing the Hamming distance between the binary codes of the image and classifiers and selecting the class with minimal Hamming distance. Conventionally, compact hash codes are primarily used for accelerating image search. Our work is first of its kind to represent classifiers using binary codes. Specifically, we formulate multi-class image classification as an optimization problem over binary variables. The optimization alternatively proceeds over the binary classifiers and image hash codes. Profiting from the special property of binary codes, we show that the sub-problems can be efficiently solved through either a binary quadratic program (BQP) or linear program. In particular, for attacking the BQP problem, we propose a novel bit-flipping procedure which enjoys high efficacy and local optimality guarantee. Our formulation supports a large family of empirical loss functions and is here instantiated by exponential / hinge losses. Comprehensive evaluations are conducted on several representative image benchmarks. The experiments consistently observe reduced complexities of model training and deployment, without sacrifice of accuracies.

Asymmetric critical $p$-Laplacian problems

We obtain nontrivial solutions for two types of critical $p$-Laplacian problems with asymmetric nonlinearities in a smooth bounded domain in ${\mathbb R}^N,\, N \ge 2$. For $p < N$, we consider an asymmetric problem involving the critical Sobolev exponent $p^\ast = Np/(N - p)$. In the borderline case $p = N$, we consider an asymmetric critical exponential nonlinearity of the Trudinger-Moser type. In the absence of a suitable direct sum decomposition, we use a linking theorem based on the ${\mathbb Z}_2$-cohomological index to obtain our solutions.

Upper triangular matrices and Billiard Arrays

Fix a nonnegative integer $d$, a field $\mathbb{F}$, and a vector space $V$ over $\mathbb{F}$ with dimension $d+1$. Let $T$ denote an invertible upper triangular matrix in ${\rm Mat}_{d+1}(\mathbb{F})$. Using $T$ we construct three flags on $V$. We find a necessary and sufficient condition on $T$ for these three flags to be totally opposite. In this case, we use these three totally opposite flags to construct a Billiard Array $B$ on $V$. It is known that $B$ is determined up to isomorphism by a certain triangular array of scalar parameters called the $B$-values. We compute these $B$-values in terms of the entries of $T$. We describe the set of isomorphism classes of Billiard Arrays in terms of upper triangular matrices.

$N$-Laplacian problems with critical Trudinger-Moser nonlinearities

We prove existence and multiplicity results for a $N$-Laplacian problem with a critical exponential nonlinearity that is a natural analog of the Brezis-Nirenberg problem for the borderline case of the Sobolev inequality. This extends results in the literature for the semilinear case $N = 2$ to all $N \ge 2$. When $N > 2$ the nonlinear operator $- Δ_N$ has no linear eigenspaces and hence this extension requires new abstract critical point theorems that are not based on linear subspaces. We prove new abstract results based on the ${\mathbb Z}_2$-cohomological index and a related pseudo-index that are applicable here.

Identifying the closeness of eigenstates in quantum many-body systems

We propose a new quantity called modulus fidelity to measure the closeness of two quantum pure states. Especially, we use it to investigate the closeness of eigenstates of quantum many-body systems. When the system is integrable, the modulus fidelity of neighbor eigenstates displays a large fluctuation. But the modulus fidelity is close to a constant when system becomes non-integrable with fluctuation reduced drastically. Average modulus fidelity of neighbor eigenstates increases with the increase of parameters that destroy the integrability, which also indicates the integrable-chaos transition. In non-integrable case, it is found two eigenstates are closer to each other if their level spacing is small. We also show that the closeness of eigenstates in non-integrable domain is the underlying mechanism of \emph{eigenstate thermalization hypothesis} (ETH) which explains the thermalization in nonintegrable system we studied.

User Mobility Evaluation for 5G Small Cell Networks Based on Individual Mobility Model

With small cell networks becoming core parts of the fifth generation (5G) cellular networks, it is an important problem to evaluate the impact of user mobility on 5G small cell networks. However, the tendency and clustering habits in human activities have not been considered in traditional user mobility models. In this paper, human tendency and clustering behaviors are first considered to evaluate the user mobility performance for 5G small cell networks based on individual mobility model (IMM). As key contributions, user pause probability, user arrival and departure probabilities are derived in this paper for evaluat-ing the user mobility performance in a hotspot-type 5G small cell network. Furthermore, coverage probabilities of small cell and macro cell BSs are derived for all users in 5G small cell networks, respectively. Compared with the traditional random waypoint (RWP) model, IMM provides a different viewpoint to investigate the impact of human tendency and clustering behaviors on the performance of 5G small cell networks.

Simultaneous observation of small- and large-energy-transfer electron-electron scattering in three dimensional indium oxide thick films

In three dimensional (3D) disordered metals, the electron-phonon (\emph{e}-ph) scattering is the sole significant inelastic process. Thus the theoretical predication concerning the electron-electron (\emph{e}-\emph{e}) scattering rate $1/τ_φ$ as a function of temperature $T$ in 3D disordered metal has not been fully tested thus far, though it was proposed 40 years ago [A. Schmid, Z. Phys. \textbf{271}, 251 (1974)]. We report here the simultaneous observation of small- and large-energy-transfer \emph{e}-\emph{e} scattering in 3D indium oxide thick films. In temperature region of $T\gtrsim100$\,K, the temperature dependence of resistivities curves of the films obey Bloch-Grüneisen law, indicating the films possess degenerate semiconductor characteristics in electrical transport property. In the low temperature regime, $1/τ_φ$ as a function of $T$ for each film can not be ascribed to \emph{e}-ph scattering. To quantitatively describe the temperature behavior of $1/τ_φ$, both the 3D small- and large-energy-transfer \emph{e}-\emph{e} scattering processes should be considered (The small- and large-energy-transfer \emph{e}-\emph{e} scattering rates are proportional to $T^{3/2}$ and $T^2$, respectively). In addition, the experimental prefactors of $T^{3/2}$ and $T^{2}$ are proportional to $k_F^{-5/2}\ell^{-3/2}$ and $E_F^{-1}$ ($k_F$ is the Fermi wave number, $\ell$ is the electron elastic mean free path, and $E_F$ is the Fermi energy), respectively, which are completely consistent with the theoretical predications. Our experimental results fully demonstrate the validity of theoretical predications concerning both small- and large-energy-transfer \emph{e}-\emph{e} scattering rates.

Constrained Deep Metric Learning for Person Re-identification

Person re-identification aims to re-identify the probe image from a given set of images under different camera views. It is challenging due to large variations of pose, illumination, occlusion and camera view. Since the convolutional neural networks (CNN) have excellent capability of feature extraction, certain deep learning methods have been recently applied in person re-identification. However, in person re-identification, the deep networks often suffer from the over-fitting problem. In this paper, we propose a novel CNN-based method to learn a discriminative metric with good robustness to the over-fitting problem in person re-identification. Firstly, a novel deep architecture is built where the Mahalanobis metric is learned with a weight constraint. This weight constraint is used to regularize the learning, so that the learned metric has a better generalization ability. Secondly, we find that the selection of intra-class sample pairs is crucial for learning but has received little attention. To cope with the large intra-class variations in pedestrian images, we propose a novel training strategy named moderate positive mining to prevent the training process from over-fitting to the extreme samples in intra-class pairs. Experiments show that our approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods on several benchmarks of person re-identification.

Modeling the Interplay Between Individual Behavior and Network Distributions

It is well-known that many networks follow a power-law degree distribution; however, the factors that influence the formation of their distributions are still unclear. How can one model the connection between individual actions and network distributions? How can one explain the formation of group phenomena and their evolutionary patterns? In this paper, we propose a unified framework, M3D, to model human dynamics in social networks from three perspectives: macro, meso, and micro. At the micro-level, we seek to capture the way in which an individual user decides whether to perform an action. At the meso-level, we study how group behavior develops and evolves over time, based on individual actions. At the macro-level, we try to understand how network distributions such as power-law (or heavy-tailed phenomena) can be explained by group behavior. We provide theoretical analysis for the proposed framework, and discuss the connection of our framework with existing work. The framework offers a new, flexible way to explain the interplay between individual user actions and network distributions, and can benefit many applications. To model heavy-tailed distributions from partially observed individual actions and to predict the formation of group behaviors, we apply M3D to three different genres of networks: Tencent Weibo, Citation, and Flickr. We also use information-burst prediction as a particular application to quantitatively evaluate the predictive power of the proposed framework. Our results on the Weibo indicate that M3D's prediction performance exceeds that of several alternative methods by up to 30\%.

$(N,q)$-Laplacian problems with critical Trudinger-Moser nonlinearities

We obtain nontrivial solutions of a $(N,q)$-Laplacian problem with a critical Trudinger-Moser nonlinearity in a bounded domain. In addition to the usual difficulty of the loss of compactness associated with problems involving critical nonlinearities, this problem lacks a direct sum decomposition suitable for applying the classical linking theorem. We show that every Palais-Smale sequence at a level below a certain energy threshold admits a subsequence that converges weakly to a nontrivial critical point of the variational functional. Then we prove an abstract critical point theorem based on a cohomological index and use it to construct a minimax level below this threshold.

Accurate atomic quantum defects from particle-particle random phase approximation

The accuracy of calculations of atomic Rydberg excitations cannot be judged by the usual measures, such as mean unsigned errors of many transitions. We show how to use quantum defect theory to (a) separate errors due to approximate ionization potentials, (b) extract smooth quantum defects to compare with experiment, and (c) quantify those defects with a few characteristic parameters. The particle-particle random phase approximation (pp-RPA) produces excellent Rydberg transitions that are an order of magnitude more accurate than those of time-dependent density functional theory with standard approximations. We even extract reasonably accurate defects from the lithium Rydberg series, despite the reference being open-shell. Our methodology can be applied to any Rydberg series of excitations with 4 transitions or more to extract the underlying threshold energy and characteristic quantum defect parameters. Our pp-RPA results set a demanding challenge for other excitation methods to match.

Novel primary photoexcitations in $π$-conjugated donor-acceptor copolymers probed by transient magneto-photoinduced-absorption

The saga of the primary photoexcitations in $π$-conjugated polymers has been a source of extraordinary scientific curiosity that has lasted for more than three decades. From soliton excitations in trans-polyacetylene, to singlet and triplet excitons and polarons in other polymers, to charge transfer excitons in blends of polymers and fullerenes, the field has been rich with a variety of different photoexcitation species. Here we show the photogeneration of a novel primary intrachain photoexcitation species, namely the composite multi-exciton (CME) in $π$-conjugated donor-acceptor (DA)-copolymers used in organic photovoltaic (OPV) solar cells. We utilized the magnetic field response of the transient photoinduced absorption from sub-picosecond to millisecond to show in pristine DA-copolymer early photogeneration of the CME species that is composed of four coupled spin 1/2 particles, having unique optical and magnetic signatures. This species decomposes into two independent triplets in the microsecond time domain. Importantly in copolymer/fullerene blends the CME ionization generates photocarriers by a unique process that may enhance the photocurrent in OPV solar cells.
