Real-time quantum state estimation in circuit QED via Bayesian approach

Using a circuit QED device, we present a theoretical study of real-time quantum state estimation via quantum Bayesian approach. Suitable conditions under which the Bayesian approach can accurately update the density matrix of the qubit are analyzed. We also consider the correlation between some basic and physically meaningful parameters of the circuit QED and the performance of the Bayesian approach. Our results advance the understanding of quantum Bayesian approach and pave the way to study quantum feedback control and adaptive control.

ELUCID IV: Galaxy Quenching and its Relation to Halo Mass, Environment, and Assembly Bias

We examine the quenched fraction of central and satellite galaxies as a function of galaxy stellar mass, halo mass, and the matter density of their large scale environment. Matter densities are inferred from our ELUCID simulation, a constrained simulation of local Universe sampled by SDSS, while halo masses and central/satellite classification are taken from the galaxy group catalog of Yang et al. The quenched fraction for the total population increases systematically with the three quantities. We find that the `environmental quenching efficiency', which quantifies the quenched fraction as function of halo mass, is independent of stellar mass. And this independence is the origin of the stellar mass-independence of density-based quenching efficiency, found in previous studies. Considering centrals and satellites separately, we find that the two populations follow similar correlations of quenching efficiency with halo mass and stellar mass, suggesting that they have experienced similar quenching processes in their host halo. We demonstrate that satellite quenching alone cannot account for the environmental quenching efficiency of the total galaxy population and the difference between the two populations found previously mainly arises from the fact that centrals and satellites of the same stellar mass reside, on average, in halos of different mass. After removing these halo-mass and stellar-mass effects, there remains a weak, but significant, residual dependence on environmental density, which is eliminated when halo assembly bias is taken into account. Our results therefore indicate that halo mass is the prime environmental parameter that regulates the quenching of both centrals and satellites.

The Brezis-Nirenberg problem for the fractional $p$-Laplacian involving critical Hardy-Sobolev exponents

We obtain existence, multiplicity, and bifurcation results for the Brezis-Nirenberg problem for the fractional $p$\nobreakdash-Laplacian operator, involving critical Hardy-Sobolev exponents. Our results are mainly extend results in the literature for $α=0$. In the absence of an explicit formula for a minimizer in the fractional Hardy-Sobolev inequality $α\not= 0$, we get around this difficulty by working with certain asymptotic estimates for minimizers recently obtained in \cite{MM}.

Quantum parameter estimation via dispersive measurement in circuit QED

We investigate the quantum parameter estimation in circuit quantum electrodynamics via dispersive measurement. Based on the Metropolis Hastings (MH) algorithm and the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) integration, a new algorithm is proposed to calculate the Fisher information by the stochastic master equation for unknown parameter estimation. Here, the Fisher information is expressed in the form of log-likehood functions and further approximated by the MCMC integration. Numerical results demonstrate that the single evolution of the Fisher information can probably approach the quantum Fisher information. The same phenomenon is observed in the ensemble evolution in the short time interval. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Jointly Attentive Spatial-Temporal Pooling Networks for Video-based Person Re-Identification

Person Re-Identification (person re-id) is a crucial task as its applications in visual surveillance and human-computer interaction. In this work, we present a novel joint Spatial and Temporal Attention Pooling Network (ASTPN) for video-based person re-identification, which enables the feature extractor to be aware of the current input video sequences, in a way that interdependency from the matching items can directly influence the computation of each other's representation. Specifically, the spatial pooling layer is able to select regions from each frame, while the attention temporal pooling performed can select informative frames over the sequence, both pooling guided by the information from distance matching. Experiments are conduced on the iLIDS-VID, PRID-2011 and MARS datasets and the results demonstrate that this approach outperforms existing state-of-art methods. We also analyze how the joint pooling in both dimensions can boost the person re-id performance more effectively than using either of them separately.

Development of a Practical Multicomponent Density Functional for Electron-Proton Correlation to Produce Accurate Proton Densities

Multicomponent density functional theory (DFT) enables the consistent quantum mechanical treatment of both electrons and protons. A major challenge has been the design of electron-proton correlation functionals that produce even qualitatively accurate proton densities. Herein an electron-proton correlation functional, epc17, is derived analogously to the Colle-Salvetti formalism for electron correlation and is implemented within the nuclear-electronic orbital (NEO) framework. The NEO-DFT/epc17 method produces accurate proton densities efficiently and is promising for diverse applications.

Cross-Domain Image Retrieval with Attention Modeling

With the proliferation of e-commerce websites and the ubiquitousness of smart phones, cross-domain image retrieval using images taken by smart phones as queries to search products on e-commerce websites is emerging as a popular application. One challenge of this task is to locate the attention of both the query and database images. In particular, database images, e.g. of fashion products, on e-commerce websites are typically displayed with other accessories, and the images taken by users contain noisy background and large variations in orientation and lighting. Consequently, their attention is difficult to locate. In this paper, we exploit the rich tag information available on the e-commerce websites to locate the attention of database images. For query images, we use each candidate image in the database as the context to locate the query attention. Novel deep convolutional neural network architectures, namely TagYNet and CtxYNet, are proposed to learn the attention weights and then extract effective representations of the images. Experimental results on public datasets confirm that our approaches have significant improvement over the existing methods in terms of the retrieval accuracy and efficiency.

In search of inliers: 3d correspondence by local and global voting

We present a method for finding correspondence between 3D models. From an initial set of feature correspondences, our method uses a fast voting scheme to separate the inliers from the outliers. The novelty of our method lies in the use of a combination of local and global constraints to determine if a vote should be cast. On a local scale, we use simple, low-level geometric invariants. On a global scale, we apply covariant constraints for finding compatible correspondences. We guide the sampling for collecting voters by downward dependencies on previous voting stages. All of this together results in an accurate matching procedure. We evaluate our algorithm by controlled and comparative testing on different datasets, giving superior performance compared to state of the art methods. In a final experiment, we apply our method for 3D object detection, showing potential use of our method within higher-level vision.

Single shot ultrafast all optical magnetization switching of ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayers

In a number of recent experiments, it has been shown that femtosecond laser pulses can control magnetization on picosecond timescales, which is at least an order of magnitude faster compared to conventional magnetization dynamics. Among these demonstrations, one material system (GdFeCo ferromagnetic films) is particularly interesting, as deterministic toggle-switching of the magnetic order has been achieved without the need of any symmetry breaking magnetic field. This phenomenon is often referred to as all optical switching (AOS). However, so far, GdFeCo remains the only material system where such deterministic switching has been observed. When extended to ferromagnetic systems, which are of greater interest in many technological applications, only a partial effect can be achieved, which in turn requires repeated laser pulses for full switching. However, such repeated pulsing is not only energy hungry, it also negates the speed advantage of AOS. Motivated by this problem, we have developed a general method for single-shot, picosecond timescale, complete all optical switching of ferromagnetic materials. We demonstrate that in exchange-coupled layers of Co/Pt and GdFeCo, single shot, switching of the ferromagnetic Co/Pt layer is achieved within 7 picoseconds after irradiation by a femtosecond laser pulse. We believe that this approach will greatly expand the range of materials and applications for ultrafast magnetic switching.

Penalized pairwise pseudo likelihood for variable selection with nonignorable missing data

The regularization approach for variable selection was well developed for a completely observed data set in the past two decades. In the presence of missing values, this approach needs to be tailored to different missing data mechanisms. In this paper, we focus on a flexible and generally applicable missing data mechanism, which contains both ignorable and nonignorable missing data mechanism assumptions. We show how the regularization approach for variable selection can be adapted to the situation under this missing data mechanism. The computational and theoretical properties for variable selection consistency are established. The proposed method is further illustrated by comprehensive simulation studies and real data analyses, for both low and high dimensional settings.

Very Large Array multi-band monitoring observations of M 31*

The Andromeda galaxy (M\,31) hosts one of the nearest and most quiescent super-massive black holes, which provides a rare, but promising opportunity for studying the physics of black hole accretion at the lowest state. We have conducted a multi-frequency, multi-epoch observing campaign, using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in its extended configurations in 2011-2012, to advance our knowledge of the still poorly known radio properties of M\,31*. For the first time, we detect M\,31* at 10, 15 and 20 GHz, and measure its spectral index, $α\approx -0.45\pm0.08$ (S$_ν$ $\varpropto$ $ν^α$), over the frequency range of 5-20 GHz. The relatively steep spectrum suggests that the observed radio flux is dominated by the optically-thin part of a putative jet, which is located at no more than a few thousand Schwarzschild radii from the black hole. On the other hand, our sensitive radio images show little evidence for an extended component, perhaps except for several parsec-scale "plumes", the nature of which remains unclear. Our data also reveal significant (a few tens of percent) flux variation of M\,31* at 6 GHz, on timescales of hours to days. Furthermore, a curious decrease of the mean flux density, by $\sim$50\%, is found between VLA observations taken during 2002-2005 and our new observations, which might be associated with a substantial increase in the mean X-ray flux of M\,31* starting in 2006.

Bound-preserving discontinuous Galerkin method for compressible miscible displacement in porous media

In this paper, we develop bound-preserving discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the coupled system of compressible miscible displacement problems. We consider the problem with two components and the (volumetric) concentration of the $i$th component of the fluid mixture, $c_i$, should be between $0$ and $1$. However, $c_i$ does not satisfy the maximum principle. Therefore, the numerical techniques introduced in (X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, Journal of Computational Physics, 229 (2010), 3091-3120) cannot be applied directly. The main idea is to apply the positivity-preserving techniques to both $c_1$ and $c_2$, respectively and enforce $c_1+c_2=1$ simultaneously to obtain physically relevant approximations. By doing so, we have to treat the time derivative of the pressure $dp/dt$ as a source in the concentration equation. Moreover, $c_i's$ are not the conservative variables, as a result, the classical bound-preserving limiter in (X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, Journal of Computational Physics, 229 (2010), 3091-3120) cannot be applied. Therefore, another limiter will be introduced. Numerical experiments will be given to demonstrate the accuracy in $L^\infty$-norm and good performance of the numerical technique.

Ultrafast Magnetic Switching of GdFeCo with Electronic Heat Currents

We report the magnetic response of Au/GdFeCo bilayers to optical irradiation of the Au surface. For bilayers with Au thickness greater than 50 nm, the great majority of energy is absorbed by the Au electrons, creating an initial temperature differential of thousands of Kelvin between the Au and GdFeCo layers. The resulting electronic heat currents between the Au and GdFeCo layers last for several picoseconds with energy flux in excess of 2 TW m-2, and provide sufficient heating to the GdFeCo electrons to induce deterministic reversal of the magnetic moment.

Electric Current Induced Ultrafast Demagnetization

We report the magnetic response of Co/Pt multilayers to picosecond electrical heating. Using photoconductive Auston switches, we generate electrical pulses with 5.5 picosecond duration and hundreds of pico-Joules to pass through Co/Pt multilayers. The electrical pulse heats the electrons in the Co/Pt multilayers and causes an ultrafast reduction in the magnetic moment. A comparison between optical and electrically induced demagnetization of the Co/Pt multilayers reveals significantly different dynamics for optical vs. electrical heating. We attribute the disparate dynamics to the dependence of the electron-phonon interaction on the average energy and total number of initially excited electrons.

Learning Efficient Image Representation for Person Re-Identification

Color names based image representation is successfully used in person re-identification, due to the advantages of being compact, intuitively understandable as well as being robust to photometric variance. However, there exists the diversity between underlying distribution of color names' RGB values and that of image pixels' RGB values, which may lead to inaccuracy when directly comparing them in Euclidean space. In this paper, we propose a new method named soft Gaussian mapping (SGM) to address this problem. We model the discrepancies between color names and pixels using a Gaussian and utilize the inverse of covariance matrix to bridge the gap between them. Based on SGM, an image could be converted to several soft Gaussian maps. In each soft Gaussian map, we further seek to establish stable and robust descriptors within a local region through a max pooling operation. Then, a robust image representation based on color names is obtained by concatenating the statistical descriptors in each stripe. When labeled data are available, one discriminative subspace projection matrix is learned to build efficient representations of an image via cross-view coupling learning. Experiments on the public datasets - VIPeR, PRID450S and CUHK03, demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Joint and Competitive Caching Designs in Large-Scale Multi-Tier Wireless Multicasting Networks

Caching and multicasting are two promising methods to support massive content delivery in multi-tier wireless networks. In this paper, we consider a random caching and multicasting scheme with caching distributions in the two tiers as design parameters, to achieve efficient content dissemination in a two-tier large-scale cache-enabled wireless multicasting network. First, we derive tractable expressions for the successful transmission probabilities in the general region as well as the high SNR and high user density region, respectively, utilizing tools from stochastic geometry. Then, for the case of a single operator for the two tiers, we formulate the optimal joint caching design problem to maximize the successful transmission probability in the asymptotic region, which is nonconvex in general. By using the block successive approximate optimization technique, we develop an iterative algorithm, which is shown to converge to a stationary point. Next, for the case of two different operators, one for each tier, we formulate the competitive caching design game where each tier maximizes its successful transmission probability in the asymptotic region. We show that the game has a unique Nash equilibrium (NE) and develop an iterative algorithm, which is shown to converge to the NE under a mild condition. Finally, by numerical simulations, we show that the proposed designs achieve significant gains over existing schemes.

Finite-dimensional irreducible $\square_q$-modules and their Drinfel'd polynomials

Let $\mathbb{F}$ denote an algebraically closed field with characteristic $0$, and let $q$ denote a nonzero scalar in $\mathbb{F}$ that is not a root of unity. Let $\mathbb{Z}_4$ denote the cyclic group of order $4$. Let $\square_q$ denote the unital associative $\mathbb{F}$-algebra defined by generators $\{x_i\}_{i\in \mathbb{Z}_4}$ and relations \begin{gather*} \frac{qx_ix_{i+1}-q^{-1}x_{i+1}x_i}{q-q^{-1}}=1, \\ x_i^3x_{i+2}-[3]_qx_i^2x_{i+2}x_i+[3]_qx_ix_{i+2}x_i^2-x_{i+2}x_i^3=0, \end{gather*} where $[3]_q=(q^3-q^{-3})/(q-q^{-1})$. There exists an automorphism $ρ$ of $\square_q$ that sends $x_i\mapsto x_{i+1}$ for $i\in \mathbb{Z}_4$. Let $V$ denote a finite-dimensional irreducible $\square_q$-module of type $1$. To $V$ we attach a polynomial called the Drinfel'd polynomial. In our main result, we explain how the following are related: (i) the Drinfel'd polynomial for the $\square_q$-module $V$; (ii) the Drinfel'd polynomial for the $\square_q$-module $V$ twisted via $ρ$. Specifically, we show that the roots of (i) are the inverses of the roots of (ii). We discuss how $\square_q$ is related to the quantum loop algebra $U_q(L(\mathfrak{sl}_2))$, its positive part $U_q^+$, the $q$-tetrahedron algebra $\boxtimes_q$, and the $q$-geometric tridiagonal pairs.

New Optimal Binary Sequences with Period $4p$ via Interleaving Ding-Helleseth-Lam Sequences

Binary sequences with optimal autocorrelation play important roles in radar, communication, and cryptography. Finding new binary sequences with optimal autocorrelation has been an interesting research topic in sequence design. Ding-Helleseth-Lam sequences are such a class of binary sequences of period $p$, where $p$ is an odd prime with $p\equiv 1(\bmod~4)$. The objective of this letter is to present a construction of binary sequences of period $4p$ via interleaving four suitable Ding-Helleseth-Lam sequences. This construction generates new binary sequences with optimal autocorrelation which can not be produced by earlier ones.
