Cryogen-free one hundred microKelvin refrigerator

Temperature below 100 microKelvin is achieved in a customized cryogen-free dilution refrigerator with a copper-nuclear demagnetization stage. The lowest temperature of conduction electrons of the demagnetization stage is below 100 microKelvin as measured by a pulsed platinum NMR thermometer and the temperature can remain below 100 microKelvin for over 10 hours. An up to 9 T demagnetization magnetic field and an up to 12 T research magnetic field can be controlled independently, provided by a coaxial room-temperature-bore cryogen-free magnet.

Rhythmic Control of Automated Traffic -- Part II: Grid Network Rhythm and Online Routing

Connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technology is providing urban transportation managers tremendous opportunities for better operation of urban mobility systems. However, there are significant challenges in real-time implementation, as the computational time of the corresponding operations optimization model increases exponentially with increasing vehicle numbers. Following the companion paper (Chen et al., 2020) which proposes a novel automated traffic control scheme for isolated intersections, this study proposes a network-level real-time traffic control framework for CAVs on grid networks. The proposed framework integrates a rhythmic control (RC) method with an online routing algorithm to realize collisionfree control of all CAVs on a network and achieve superior performance in average vehicle delay, network traffic throughput, and computational scalability. Specifically, we construct a preset network rhythm that all CAVs can follow to move on the network and avoid collisions at all intersections. Based on the network rhythm, we then formulate online routing for the CAVs as a mixed integer linear program, which optimizes the entry times of CAVs at all entrances of the network and their time-space routings in real time. We provide a sufficient condition that the linear programming relaxation of the online routing model yields an optimal integer solution. Extensive numerical tests are conducted to show the performance of the proposed operations management framework under various scenarios. It is illustrated that the framework is capable of achieving negligible delays and increased network throughput. Furthermore, the computational time results are also promising. The CPU time for solving a collision-free control optimization problem with 2,000 vehicles is only 0.3 s on an ordinary personal computer.

Rhythmic Control of Automated Traffic -- Part I: Concept and Properties at Isolated Intersections

Leveraging the accuracy and consistency of vehicle motion control enabled by the connected and automated vehicle technology, we propose the rhythmic control (RC) scheme that allows vehicles to pass through an intersection in a conflict-free manner with a preset rhythm. The rhythm enables vehicles to proceed at a constant speed without any stop. The RC is capable of breaking the limitation that right of way can only be allocated to non-conflicting movements at a time. It significantly improves the performance of intersection control for automated traffic. Moreover, the RC with a predetermined rhythm does not require intensive computational efforts to dynamically control vehicles, which may possibly lead to frequent accelerations or decelerations. Assuming stationary vehicle arrivals, we conduct theoretical investigation to show that RC can considerably increase intersection capacity and reduce vehicle delay. Finally, the performance of RC is tested in the simulations with both stationary and non-stationary vehicle arrivals at both symmetric and asymmetric intersections.

Scaling Behavior of the Quantum Phase Transition from a Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulator to an Axion Insulator

The phase transitions from one plateau to the next plateau or to an insulator in quantum Hall and quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) systems have revealed universal scaling behaviors. A magnetic-field-driven quantum phase transition from a QAH insulator to an axion insulator was recently demonstrated in magnetic topological insulator sandwich samples. Here, we show that the temperature dependence of the derivative of the longitudinal resistance on magnetic field at the transition point follows a characteristic power-law that indicates a universal scaling behavior for the QAH to axion insulator phase transition. Similar to the quantum Hall plateau to plateau transition, the QAH to axion insulator transition can also be understood by the Chalker-Coddington network model. We extract a critical exponent k~ 0.38 in agreement with recent high-precision numerical results on the correlation length exponent of the Chalker-Coddington model at v ~ 2.6, rather than the generally-accepted value of 2.33.

Simulation Comparisons of Vehicle-based and Phase-based Traffic Control for Autonomous Vehicles at Isolated Intersections

With the advent of autonomous driving technologies, traffic control at intersections is expected to experience revolutionary changes. Various novel intersection control methods have been proposed in the existing literature, and they can be roughly divided into two categories: vehicle-based traffic control and phase-based traffic control. Phase-based traffic control can be treated as updated versions of the current intersection signal control with the incorporation of the performance of autonomous vehicle functions. Meanwhile, vehicle-based traffic control utilizes some brand-new methods, mostly in real-time fashion, to organize traffic at intersections for safe and efficient vehicle passages. However, to date, no systematic comparison between these two control categories has been performed to suggest their advantages and disadvantages. This paper conducts a series of numerical simulations under various traffic scenarios to perform a fair comparison of their performances. Specifically, we allow trajectory adjustments of incoming vehicles under phasebased traffic control, while for its vehicle-based counterpart, we implement two strategies, i.e., the first-come-first-serve strategy and the conflict-point based rolling-horizon optimization strategy. Overall, the simulation results show that vehicle-based traffic control generally incurs a negligible delay when traffic demand is low but lead to an excessive queuing time as the traffic volume becomes high. However, performance of vehicle-based traffic control may benefit from reduction in conflicting vehicle pairs. We also discovered that when autonomous driving technologies are not mature, the advantages of phase-based traffic control are much more distinct.

Type-II Ising superconductivity and anomalous metallic state in macro-size ambient-stable ultrathin crystalline films

Recent emergence of two-dimensional (2D) crystalline superconductors has provided a promising platform to investigate novel quantum physics and potential applications. To reveal essential quantum phenomena therein, ultralow temperature transport investigation on high quality ultrathin superconducting films is critically required, although it has been quite challenging experimentally. Here we report a systematic transport study on the ultrathin crystalline PdTe2 films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Interestingly, a new type of Ising superconductivity in 2D centrosymmetric materials is revealed by the detection of large in-plane critical field more than 7 times Pauli limit. Remarkably, in perpendicular magnetic field, we provide solid evidence of anomalous metallic state characterized by the resistance saturation at low temperatures with high quality filters. The robust superconductivity with intriguing quantum phenomena in the macro-size ambient-stable ultrathin PdTe2 films remains almost the same for 20 months, showing great potentials in electronic and spintronic applications.

Finite-thickness effect and spin polarization of the even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states

The spin-polarized even-denominator fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states in the second Landau level (LL), i.e. 5/2 and 7/2, may possess novel quasi-particle excitations obeying non-Abelian statistics. However, the spin polarization of the 7/2 FQH state has not been investigated experimentally and the spin polarization of the 5/2 FQH state from tilted field experiments remains controversial. Using a piezo-driven sample rotator with the lowest electron temperature down to 25 mK, we studied the energy gap of the even-denominator FQH states in the second LL by precise control of the tilted angles with a resolution less than 0.1°. We observed two different energy gap dependences on the in-plane magnetic field for 5/2, 7/2, other FQH states (7/3 and 8/3) in the second LL and reentrant integer quantum Hall (RIQH) states in the third LL. Though the transition fields vary from states, their corresponding in-plane magnetic lengths are comparable to the quantum well thickness of the sample, which may result from the influence of the finite-thickness effect. At low in-plane magnetic fields, before the conjectured finite-thickness effect starts to dominate, the energy gaps of both 5/2 and 7/2 states show a non-decreasing behavior, supporting spin-polarized ground states. Our results also suggest that the 7/3, 8/3 FQH states, and the RIQH states in the third LL are spin-polarized or partially spin-polarized.

Pareto Multi-Task Learning

Multi-task learning is a powerful method for solving multiple correlated tasks simultaneously. However, it is often impossible to find one single solution to optimize all the tasks, since different tasks might conflict with each other. Recently, a novel method is proposed to find one single Pareto optimal solution with good trade-off among different tasks by casting multi-task learning as multiobjective optimization. In this paper, we generalize this idea and propose a novel Pareto multi-task learning algorithm (Pareto MTL) to find a set of well-distributed Pareto solutions which can represent different trade-offs among different tasks. The proposed algorithm first formulates a multi-task learning problem as a multiobjective optimization problem, and then decomposes the multiobjective optimization problem into a set of constrained subproblems with different trade-off preferences. By solving these subproblems in parallel, Pareto MTL can find a set of well-representative Pareto optimal solutions with different trade-off among all tasks. Practitioners can easily select their preferred solution from these Pareto solutions, or use different trade-off solutions for different situations. Experimental results confirm that the proposed algorithm can generate well-representative solutions and outperform some state-of-the-art algorithms on many multi-task learning applications.

A Keyframe-based Continuous Visual SLAM for RGB-D Cameras via Nonparametric Joint Geometric and Appearance Representation

This paper reports on a robust RGB-D SLAM system that performs well in scarcely textured and structured environments. We present a novel keyframe-based continuous visual odometry that builds on the recently developed continuous sensor registration framework. A joint geometric and appearance representation is the result of transforming the RGB-D images into functions that live in a Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS). We solve both registration and keyframe selection problems via the inner product structure available in the RKHS. We also extend the proposed keyframe-based odometry method to a SLAM system using indirect ORB loop-closure constraints. The experimental evaluations using publicly available RGB-D benchmarks show that the developed keyframe selection technique using continuous visual odometry outperforms its robust dense (and direct) visual odometry equivalent. In addition, the developed SLAM system has better generalization across different training and validation sequences; it is robust to the lack of texture and structure in the scene; and shows comparable performance with the state-of-the-art SLAM systems.

3/2 Fractional Quantum Hall Plateau in Confined Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

Even-denominator fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, such as 5/2 and 7/2, have been well known in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) for decades and are still investigated as candidates of non-Abelian statistics. In this paper, we present the observation of a 3/2 FQH plateau in a single-layer 2DEG with lateral confinement at a bulk filling factor of 5/3. The 3/2 FQH plateau is quantized at (h/e^2 )/(3/2) within 0.02%, and can survive up to 300 mK. This even-denominator FQH plateau may imply intriguing edge structure and excitation in FQH system with lateral confinement. The observations in this work demonstrate that understanding the effect of the lateral confinement on the many-body system is critical in the pursuit of important theoretical proposals involving edge physics, such as the demonstration of non-Abelian statistics and the realization of braiding for fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Re-Symmetrizing the Broken Symmetry with Isotropic Hydrostatic Pressure

Recent progresses in condensed matter physics, such as graphene, topological insulator and Weyl semimetal, often origin from the specific topological symmetries of their lattice structures. Quantum states with different degrees of freedom, e.g. spin, valley, layer, etc., arise from these symmetries, and the coherent superpositions of these states form multiple energy subbands. The pseudospin, a concept analogy to the Dirac spinor matrices, is a successful description of such multi-subband systems. When the electron-electron interaction dominates, many-body quantum phases arise. They usually have digitized pseudospin polarizations and exhibit sharp phase transitions at certain universal critical pseudospin energy splittings. In this manuscript, we present our remarkable discovery of hydrostatic pressure induced degeneracy between the two lowest Landau levels. This degeneracy is evidenced by the pseudospin polarization transitions of the fragile correlated quantum liquid phases near Landau level filling factor $ν$ = 3/2. Benefitted from the constant hole concentration and the sensitive nature of these transitions, we can study the fine-tuning effect of the hydrostatic pressure of the order of 10 $μ$eV, well beyond the meV-level state-of-the-art resolution of other techniques.

Piezo-driven sample rotation system with ultra-low electron temperature

Piezo-driven rotator is convenient for tilted magnetic field experiments due to its precise angle control. However, the rotator itself and the sample mounted on it are difficult to be cooled down because of extra heat leaks and presumably bad thermal contacts from the piezo. Here, we report a piezo-driven sample rotation system designed for ultra-low temperature environment. The sample, as well as the rotating sample holder, can be cooled to as low as 25 mK by customized thermal links and thermal contacts. More importantly, the electron temperature in the electrical transport measurements can also be cooled down to 25 mK with the help of home-made filters. To demonstrate the application of our rotation system at ultra-low electron temperature, a measurement revealing tilt-induced localization and delocalization in the second Landau level of two-dimensional electron gas is provided.

Nonlinear Collaborative Scheme for Deep Neural Networks

Conventional research attributes the improvements of generalization ability of deep neural networks either to powerful optimizers or the new network design. Different from them, in this paper, we aim to link the generalization ability of a deep network to optimizing a new objective function. To this end, we propose a \textit{nonlinear collaborative scheme} for deep network training, with the key technique as combining different loss functions in a nonlinear manner. We find that after adaptively tuning the weights of different loss functions, the proposed objective function can efficiently guide the optimization process. What is more, we demonstrate that, from the mathematical perspective, the nonlinear collaborative scheme can lead to (i) smaller KL divergence with respect to optimal solutions; (ii) data-driven stochastic gradient descent; (iii) tighter PAC-Bayes bound. We also prove that its advantage can be strengthened by nonlinearity increasing. To some extent, we bridge the gap between learning (i.e., minimizing the new objective function) and generalization (i.e., minimizing a PAC-Bayes bound) in the new scheme. We also interpret our findings through the experiments on Residual Networks and DenseNet, showing that our new scheme performs superior to single-loss and multi-loss schemes no matter with randomization or not.

A Batched Scalable Multi-Objective Bayesian Optimization Algorithm

The surrogate-assisted optimization algorithm is a promising approach for solving expensive multi-objective optimization problems. However, most existing surrogate-assisted multi-objective optimization algorithms have three main drawbacks: 1) cannot scale well for solving problems with high dimensional decision space, 2) cannot incorporate available gradient information, and 3) do not support batch optimization. These drawbacks prevent their use for solving many real-world large scale optimization problems. This paper proposes a batched scalable multi-objective Bayesian optimization algorithm to tackle these issues. The proposed algorithm uses the Bayesian neural network as the scalable surrogate model. Powered with Monte Carlo dropout and Sobolov training, the model can be easily trained and can incorporate available gradient information. We also propose a novel batch hypervolume upper confidence bound acquisition function to support batch optimization. Experimental results on various benchmark problems and a real-world application demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Multistep Speed Prediction on Traffic Networks: A Graph Convolutional Sequence-to-Sequence Learning Approach with Attention Mechanism

Multistep traffic forecasting on road networks is a crucial task in successful intelligent transportation system applications. To capture the complex non-stationary temporal dynamics and spatial dependency in multistep traffic-condition prediction, we propose a novel deep learning framework named attention graph convolutional sequence-to-sequence model (AGC-Seq2Seq). In the proposed deep learning framework, spatial and temporal dependencies are modeled through the Seq2Seq model and graph convolution network separately, and the attention mechanism along with a newly designed training method based on the Seq2Seq architecture is proposed to overcome the difficulty in multistep prediction and further capture the temporal heterogeneity of traffic pattern. We conduct numerical tests to compare AGC-Seq2Seq with other benchmark models using a real-world dataset. The results indicate that our model yields the best prediction performance in terms of various prediction error measures. Furthermore, the variation of spatiotemporal correlation of traffic conditions under different perdition steps and road segments is revealed through sensitivity analyses.

Anomalous quantum Griffiths singularity in ultrathin crystalline lead films

We study the magnetic field induced superconductor-metal transition (SMT) in ultrathin crystalline Pb films. By performing ultralow temperature transport measurement, the divergent critical exponent as an indication of quantum Griffiths singularity (QGS) is observed when approaching zero temperature quantum critical point. Distinctively, the phase boundary of SMT exhibits an anomalous behavior in low temperature regime that the onset critical field decreases with decreasing temperatures, which distinguishes our observation from earlier reports of QGS in various two-dimensional superconductors. We demonstrate that this observed anomalous phase boundary has its origin from the superconducting fluctuations in ultrathin Pb films. Our findings reveal a novel aspect of the QGS of SMT in two-dimentional superconducting systems with anomalous phase boundary.

Experimental Signatures of Spin Superfluid Ground State in Canted Antiferromagnet Cr2O3 via Nonlocal Spin Transport

Spin superfluid is a novel emerging quantum matter arising from the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of spin-1 bosons. We demonstrate the spin superfluid ground state in canted antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 thin film at low temperatures via nonlocal spin transport. A large enhancement of the nonlocal spin signal is observed below ~ 20 K, and it saturates from ~ 5 K down to 2 K. We show that the spins can propagate over very long distances (~ 20 micro meters) in such spin superfluid ground state and the nonlocal spin signal decreases very slowly as the spacing increases with an inverse relationship, which is consistent with theoretical prediction. Furthermore, spin superfluidity has been investigated in the canted antiferromagnetic phase of the (11-20)-oriented Cr2O3 film, where the magnetic field dependence of the associated critical temperature follows a two-thirds power law near the critical point. The experimental demonstration of the spin superfluid ground state in canted antiferromagnet will be extremely important for the fundamental physics on the BEC of spin-1 bosons and paves the way for future spin supercurrent devices, such as spin-Josephson junctions.

Stability of the 5/2 Fractional Quantum Hall State in a Corbino Disc Sample with In-plane Electric Fields

Among the various geometries to study the fractional quantum Hall effect in two dimensional electron gas, the Corbino disc owns the advantage to probe the bulk properties directly. In this work we explore the influence of in-plane electric fields on the stability of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state realized in Corbino geometry. The effect of weak electric fields is investigated at ultra-low temperatures in order to compare with a theoretical proposal of enhanced Pfaffian state under weak electric fields.
