Observation of long phase-coherence length in epitaxial La-doped CdO thin films

The search for long electron phase coherence length, which is the length that an electron can keep its quantum wave-like properties, has attracted considerable interest in the last several decades. Here, we report the long phase coherence length of ~ 3.7 micro meters in La-doped CdO thin films at 2 K. Systematical investigations of the La doping and the temperature dependences of the electron mobility and the electron phase coherence length reveal contrasting scattering mechanisms for these two physical properties. Furthermore, these results show that the oxygen vacancies could be the dominant scatters in CdO thin films that break the electron phase coherence, which would shed light on further investigation of phase coherence properties in oxide materials.

Low-Temperature Conductivity of Weakly Interacting Quantum Spin Hall Edges in Strained-Layer InAs/GaInSb

We report low-temperature transport measurements in strained InAs/Ga0.68In0.32Sb quantum wells, which supports time-reversal symmetry-protected helical edge states. The temperature and bias voltage dependence of the helical edge conductance for devices of various sizes are consistent with the theoretical expectation of a weakly interacting helical edge state. Moreover, we found that the magnetoresistance of the helical edge states is related to the edge interaction effect and the disorder strength.

Ising Superconductivity and Quantum Phase Transition in Macro-Size Monolayer NbSe2

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have a range of unique physics properties and could be used in the development of electronics, photonics, spintronics and quantum computing devices. The mechanical exfoliation technique of micro-size TMD flakes has attracted particular interest due to its simplicity and cost effectiveness. However, for most applications, large area and high quality films are preferred. Furthermore, when the thickness of crystalline films is down to the 2D limit (monolayer), exotic properties can be expected due to the quantum confinement and symmetry breaking. In this paper, we have successfully prepared macro-size atomically flat monolayer NbSe2 films on bilayer graphene terminated surface of 6H-SiC(0001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method. The films exhibit an onset superconducting critical transition temperature above 6 K, 2 times higher than that of mechanical exfoliated NbSe2 flakes. Simultaneously, the transport measurements at high magnetic fields reveal that the parallel characteristic field Bc// is at least 4.5 times higher than the paramagnetic limiting field, consistent with Zeeman-protected Ising superconductivity mechanism. Besides, by ultralow temperature electrical transport measurements, the monolayer NbSe2 film shows the signature of quantum Griffiths singularity when approaching the zero-temperature quantum critical point.

Stability of the $N = 2$ bubble states in Corbino geometry under a tilted field

We measured the activation energy gap of the N = 2 bubble states using tilted-field technique in two GaAs/AlGaAs samples with Corbino geometry, and observed monotonically decreasing energy gaps with the increasing total magnetic field. The observed tilt angle dependence is discussed based on magneto-orbital coupling and finite-size effect. We also found a bubble state at an uncommon filling factor of 4.67, with an unanticipated energy gap of up to 5.35 K and opposite in-plane field dependence.

Competing ν= 5/2 fractional quantum Hall states in confined geometry

Some theories predict that the filling factor 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state can exhibit non-Abelian statistics, which makes it a candidate for fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. Although the non-Abelian Pfaffian state and its particle-hole conjugate, the anti-Pfaffian state, are the most plausible wave functions for the 5/2 state, there are a number of alternatives with either Abelian or non-Abelian statistics. Recent experiments suggest that the tunneling exponents are more consistent with an Abelian state rather than a non-Abelian state. Here, we present edge-current-tunneling experiments in geometrically confined quantum point contacts, which indicate that Abelian and non-Abelian states compete at filling factor 5/2. Our results are consistent with a transition from an Abelian state to a non-Abelian state in a single quantum point contact when the confinement is tuned. Our observation suggests that there is an intrinsic non-Abelian 5/2 ground state, but that the appropriate confinement is necessary to maintain it. This observation is important not only for understanding the physics of the 5/2 state, but also for the design of future topological quantum computation devices.

Nonlinear Transport of Graphene in the Quantum Hall Regime

We have studied the breakdown of the integer quantum Hall (QH) effect with fully broken symmetry, in an ultra-high mobility graphene device sandwiched between two single crystal hexagonal boron nitride substrates. The evolution and stabilities of the QH states are studied quantitatively through the nonlinear transport with dc Hall voltage bias. The mechanism of the QH breakdown in graphene and the movement of the Fermi energy with the electrical Hall field are discussed. This is the first study in which the stabilities of fully symmetry broken QH states are probed all together. Our results raise the possibility that the v=6 states might be a better target for the quantum resistance standard.

Observation of Quantum Griffiths Singularity and Ferromagnetism at Superconducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) Interface

Diverse phenomena emerge at the interface between band insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism, showing an opportunity for potential applications as well as bringing fundamental research interests. Particularly, the two-dimensional electron gas formed at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface offers an appealing platform for quantum phase transition from a superconductor to a weakly localized metal. Here we report the superconductor-metal transition in superconducting two-dimensional electron gas formed at LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) interface driven by a perpendicular magnetic field. Interestingly, when approaching the quantum critical point, the dynamic critical exponent is not a constant but a diverging value, which is a direct evidence of quantum Griffiths singularity raised from quenched disorder at ultralow temperatures. Furthermore, the hysteretic property of magnetoresistance was firstly observed at LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) interfaces, which suggests potential coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism.

Observation of a Helical Luttinger-Liquid in InAs/GaSb Quantum Spin Hall Edges

We report on the observation of a helical Luttinger-liquid in the edge of InAs/GaSb quantum spin Hall insulator, which shows characteristic suppression of conductance at low temperature and low bias voltage. Moreover, the conductance shows power-law behavior as a function of temperature and bias voltage. The results underscore the strong electron-electron interaction effect in transport of InAs/GaSb edge states. Because of the fact that the Fermi velocity of the edge modes is controlled by gates, the Luttinger parameter can be fine tuned. Realization of a tunable Luttinger-liquid offers a one-dimensional model system for future studies of predicted correlation effects.

Recent Experimental Progress of Fractional Quantum Hall Effect: 5/2 Filling State and Graphene

The phenomenon of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) was first experimentally observed 33 years ago. FQHE involves strong Coulomb interactions and correlations among the electrons, which leads to quasiparticles with fractional elementary charge. Three decades later, the field of FQHE is still active with new discoveries and new technical developments. A significant portion of attention in FQHE has been dedicated to filling factor 5/2 state, for its unusual even denominator and possible application in topological quantum computation. Traditionally FQHE has been observed in high mobility GaAs heterostructure, but new materials such as graphene also open up a new area for FQHE. This review focuses on recent progress of FQHE at 5/2 state and FQHE in graphene.

De-Pinning Transition of Bubble Phases in a High Landau Level

While in the lowest Landau level the electron-electron interaction leads to the formation of the Wigner crystal, in higher Landau levels a solid phase with multiple electrons in a lattice site of crystal was predicted, which was called the bubble phase. Reentrant integer quantum Hall states are believed to be the insulating bubble phase pinned by disorder. We carry out nonlinear transport measurements on the reentrant states and study the de-pinning of the bubble phase, which is complementary to previous microwave measurements and provides unique information. In this study, conductivity is directly measured with Corbino geometry. Based on the threshold electric field of de-pinning, a phase diagram of the reentrant state is mapped. We discuss an interaction-driven topological phase transition between the integer quantum Hall state and the reentrant integer quantum Hall state.

Surface Shear Transformation Zones in Amorphous Solids

We perform a systematic study of the characteristics of shear transformation zones (STZs) that nucleate at free surfaces of two-dimensional amorphous solids subject to tensile loading using two different atomistic simulation methods, the standard athermal, quasistatic (AQ) approach and our recently developed self-learning metabasin escape (SLME) method to account for the finite temperature and strain-rate effects. In the AQ, or strain-driven limit, the nonaffine displacement fields of surface STZs decay exponentially away from their centers at similar decay rates as their bulk counterparts, though the direction of maximum nonaffine displacement is tilted away from the tensile axis due to surface effects. Using the SLME method at room temperature and at the high strain rates that are seen in classical molecular dynamics simulations, the characteristics for both bulk and surface STZs are found to be identical to those seen in the AQ simulations. However, using the SLME method at room temperature and experimentally-relevant strain rates, we find a transition in the surface STZ characteristics where a loss in the characteristic angular tensile-compression symmetry is observed. Finally, the thermally-activated surface STZs exhibit a slower decay rate in the nonaffine displacement field than do strain-driven surface STZs, which is characterized by a larger drop in potential energy resulting from STZ nucleation that is enabled by the relative compliance of the surface as compared to the bulk.

Strain-rate and temperature dependence of yield stress of amorphous solids via self-learning metabasin escape algorithm

A general self-learning metabasin escape (SLME) algorithm~\citep{caoPRE2012} is coupled in this work with continuous shear deformations to probe the yield stress as a function of strain rate and temperature for a binary Lennard-Jones (LJ) amorphous solid. The approach is shown to match the results of classical molecular dynamics (MD) at high strain rates where the MD results are valid, but, importantly, is able to access experimental strain rates that are about ten orders of magnitude slower than MD. In doing so, we find in agreement with previous experimental studies that a substantial decrease in yield stress is observed with decreasing strain rate. At room temperature and laboratory strain rates, the activation volume associated with yield is found to contain about 10 LJ particles, while the yield stress is as sensitive to a $1.5\%T_{\rm g}$ increase in temperature as it is to a one order of magnitude decrease in strain rate. Moreover, our SLME results suggest the SLME and extrapolated results from MD simulations follow distinctly different energetic pathways during the applied shear deformation at low temperatures and experimental strain rates, which implies that extrapolation of the governing deformation mechanisms from MD strain rates to experimental may not be valid.

Electronic phase diagram in the new BiS2-based Sr1-xLaxFBiS2 system

In this paper, we systematically study the electron doping effect in a new BiS2-based system Sr1-xLaxFBiS2(0 0.3, reaching its maximal superconducting transition temperature Tc=3.5 K at x=0.55. In the normal state of superconducting samples, it is clearly seen that there exists a crossover from metallic to semiconducting state below a temperature Tmin, which shifts to lower temperatures with increasing La content. Based on these measurements, the associated electronic phase diagram of Sr1-xLaxFBiS2 system has thus been established.

Strain-rate and temperature-driven transition in the shear transformation zone for two-dimensional amorphous solids

We couple the recently developed self-learning metabasin escape algorithm, which enables efficient exploration of the potential energy surface (PES), with shear deformation to elucidate strain-rate and temperature effects on the shear transformation zone (STZ) characteristics in two-dimensional amorphous solids. In doing so, we report a transition in the STZ characteristics that can be obtained through either increasing the temperature or decreasing the strain rate. The transition separates regions having two distinct STZ characteristics. Specifically, at high temperatures and high strain rates, we show that the STZs have characteristics identical to those that emerge from purely strain-driven, athermal quasistatic atomistic calculations. At lower temperatures and experimentally relevant strain rates, we use the newly coupled PES + shear deformation method to show that the STZs have characteristics identical to those that emerge from a purely thermally activated state. The specific changes in STZ characteristics that occur in moving from the strain-driven to thermally activated STZ regime include a 33% increase in STZ size, faster spatial decay of the displacement field, a change in the deformation mechanism inside the STZ from shear to tension, a reduction in the stress needed to nucleate the first STZ, and finally a notable loss in characteristic quadrupolar symmetry of the surrounding elastic matrix that has previously been seen in athermal, quasistatic shear studies of STZs.

Superconductivity induced by La doping in Sr1-xLaxFBiS2 system

Through a combination of X-ray diffraction, electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements, we report the effect of La doping on Sr in the newly discovered SrFBiS2 system. Superconducting transition with critical temperature Tc of 2.8 K, developed from a semiconducting-like normal state, was found in Sr0.5La0.5FBiS2. A strong diamagnetic signal and a clear specific heat anomaly associated with this transition were observed, confirming bulk superconductivity. The upper critical field Hc2(0) was estimated to be 1 Tesla by using the Ginzburg-Landau approach. Our experiments therefore demonstrate that bulk superconductivity can be achieved by electron doping in the SrFBiS2 system.

Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory with Ultrasoft Pseudopotential: Real-Time Electron Propagation across Molecular Junction

A practical computational scheme based on time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and ultrasoft pseudopotential (USPP) is developed to study electron dynamics in real time. A modified Crank-Nicolson time-stepping algorithm is adopted, under planewave basis. The scheme is validated by calculating the optical absorption spectra for sodium dimer and benzene molecule. As an application of this USPP-TDDFT formalism, we compute the time evolution of a test electron packet at the Fermi energy of the left metallic lead crossing a benzene-(1,4)-dithiolate junction. A transmission probability of 5-7%, corresponding to a conductance of 4.0-5.6muS, is obtained. These results are consistent with complex band structure estimates, and Green's function calculation results at small bias voltages.

Optimization of Quantum Monte Carlo Wave Functions Using Analytical Energy Derivatives

An algorithm is proposed to optimize quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) wave functions based on New ton's method and analytical computation of the first and second derivatives of the variati onal energy. This direct application of the variational principle yields significantly low er energy than variance minimization methods when applied to the same trial wave function. Quadratic convergence to the local minimum of the variational parameters is achieved. A g eneral theorem is presented, which substantially simplifies the analytic expressions of de rivatives in the case of wave function optimization. To demonstrate the method, the ground state energies of the first-row elements are calculated.
