A "coronal-mass-ejection'' model for flares in Sagittarius A*

High-resolution near infrared observations with GRAVITY instrument have revealed rapid orbital motions of a hot spot around Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole in our Galactic center, during its three bright flares. The projected distances of the spot to the black hole are measured and seems to increase with time. The values of distance, combined with the measured orbiting time, imply that the spot is rotating with a super-Keplerian velocity. These results are hard to understand if the spot stay within the accretion flow thus provide strong constraints on theoretical models for flares. Previously we have proposed a "ME" model for the flares by analogy with the coronal mass ejection model in solar physics. In that model, magnetic reconnection occurred at the surface of the accretion flow results in the formation of flux ropes, which are then ejected out. Energetic electrons accelerated in the current sheet flow into the flux rope region and their radiation is responsible for the flares. In this paper, we apply the model to the interpretation of the GRAVITY results by calculating the dynamics of the ejected flux rope, the evolution of the magnetic field and the energy distribution of accelerated electrons, and the radiation of the system. We find that the model can well explain the observed light curve of the flares, the time-dependent distance and the super-Keplerian motion of the hot spot. It also explains why the light curve of some flares have double peaks.

Strategy to select most efficient RCT samples based on observational data

Randomized experiments can provide unbiased estimates of sample average treatment effects. However, estimates of population treatment effects can be biased when the experimental sample and the target population differ. In this case, the population average treatment effect can be identified by combining experimental and observational data. A good experiment design trumps all the analyses that come after. While most of the existing literature centers around improving analyses after RCTs, we instead focus on the design stage, fundamentally improving the efficiency of the combined causal estimator through the selection of experimental samples. We explore how the covariate distribution of RCT samples influences the estimation efficiency and derive the optimal covariate allocation that leads to the lowest variance. Our results show that the optimal allocation does not necessarily follow the exact distribution of the target cohort, but adjusted for the conditional variability of potential outcomes. We formulate a metric to compare and choose from candidate RCT sample compositions. We also develop variations of our main results to cater for practical scenarios with various cost constraints and precision requirements. The ultimate goal of this paper is to provide practitioners with a clear and actionable strategy to select RCT samples that will lead to efficient causal inference.

Pareto Set Learning for Expensive Multi-Objective Optimization

Expensive multi-objective optimization problems can be found in many real-world applications, where their objective function evaluations involve expensive computations or physical experiments. It is desirable to obtain an approximate Pareto front with a limited evaluation budget. Multi-objective Bayesian optimization (MOBO) has been widely used for finding a finite set of Pareto optimal solutions. However, it is well-known that the whole Pareto set is on a continuous manifold and can contain infinite solutions. The structural properties of the Pareto set are not well exploited in existing MOBO methods, and the finite-set approximation may not contain the most preferred solution(s) for decision-makers. This paper develops a novel learning-based method to approximate the whole Pareto set for MOBO, which generalizes the decomposition-based multi-objective optimization algorithm (MOEA/D) from finite populations to models. We design a simple and powerful acquisition search method based on the learned Pareto set, which naturally supports batch evaluation. In addition, with our proposed model, decision-makers can readily explore any trade-off area in the approximate Pareto set for flexible decision-making. This work represents the first attempt to model the Pareto set for expensive multi-objective optimization. Experimental results on different synthetic and real-world problems demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Pareto Set Learning for Neural Multi-objective Combinatorial Optimization

Multiobjective combinatorial optimization (MOCO) problems can be found in many real-world applications. However, exactly solving these problems would be very challenging, particularly when they are NP-hard. Many handcrafted heuristic methods have been proposed to tackle different MOCO problems over the past decades. In this work, we generalize the idea of neural combinatorial optimization, and develop a learning-based approach to approximate the whole Pareto set for a given MOCO problem without further search procedure. We propose a single preference-conditioned model to directly generate approximate Pareto solutions for any trade-off preference, and design an efficient multiobjective reinforcement learning algorithm to train this model. Our proposed method can be treated as a learning-based extension for the widely-used decomposition-based multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA/D). It uses a single model to accommodate all the possible preferences, whereas other methods use a finite number of solutions to approximate the Pareto set. Experimental results show that our proposed method significantly outperforms some other methods on the multiobjective traveling salesman problem, multiobjective vehicle routing problem, and multiobjective knapsack problem in terms of solution quality, speed, and model efficiency.

Rapid manufacturing of color-based hemispherical soft tactile fingertips

Tactile sensing can provide access to information about the contact (i.e. slippage, surface feature, friction), which is out of reach of vision but crucial for manipulation. To access this information, a dense measurement of the deformation of soft fingertips is necessary. Recently, tactile sensors that rely on a camera looking at a deformable membrane have demonstrated that a dense measurement of the contact is possible. However, their manufacturing can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. Here, we show a new design method that uses multi-color additive manufacturing and silicone casting to efficiently manufacture soft marker-based tactile sensors that are able to capture with high-resolution the three-dimensional deformation field at the interface. Each marker is composed of two superimposed color filters. The subtractive color mixing encodes the normal deformation of the membrane, and the lateral deformation is found by centroid detection. With this manufacturing method, we can reach a density of 400 markers on a 21 mm radius hemisphere, allowing for regular and dense measurement of the deformation. We calibrated and validated the approach by finding the curvature of objects with a threefold increase in accuracy as compared to previous implementations. The results demonstrate a simple yet effective approach to manufacturing artificial fingertips for capturing a rich image of the tactile interaction at the location of contact.

Gate-tunability of the superconducting state at the $EuO/KTaO_3 (111)$ interface

The recent discovery of superconducting interfaces in the $KTaO_3 (111)$-based heterostructures is intriguing, since a much higher superconducting critical temperature (TC ~ 2 K) is achieved compared to that in the $SrTiO_3$ heterostructures (~ 300 mK). In this paper, we report the superconducting properties of $EuO/KTaO_3 (111)$ interface as a function of the interface carrier density ($n_s$). The maximum T_C is observed to be ~ 2 K at $n_s$ ~ $1\times10^{14}$ cm-2. In addition, we show that the critical current density and the upper critical magnetic field can be effectively tuned by the back gate voltage. Interestingly, the gate dependence of the upper critical magnetic field exhibits a trend opposite to that of TC in the underdoped region, suggesting a relatively larger Cooper pairing potential.

Template NeRF: Towards Modeling Dense Shape Correspondences from Category-Specific Object Images

We present neural radiance fields (NeRF) with templates, dubbed Template-NeRF, for modeling appearance and geometry and generating dense shape correspondences simultaneously among objects of the same category from only multi-view posed images, without the need of either 3D supervision or ground-truth correspondence knowledge. The learned dense correspondences can be readily used for various image-based tasks such as keypoint detection, part segmentation, and texture transfer that previously require specific model designs. Our method can also accommodate annotation transfer in a one or few-shot manner, given only one or a few instances of the category. Using periodic activation and feature-wise linear modulation (FiLM) conditioning, we introduce deep implicit templates on 3D data into the 3D-aware image synthesis pipeline NeRF. By representing object instances within the same category as shape and appearance variation of a shared NeRF template, our proposed method can achieve dense shape correspondences reasoning on images for a wide range of object classes. We demonstrate the results and applications on both synthetic and real-world data with competitive results compared with other methods based on 3D information.

Extrinsic and Intrinsic Anomalous Metallic States in Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Ising Superconductors

The metallic ground state in two-dimensional (2D) superconductors has attracted much attention but is still under intense scrutiny. Especially, the measurements in ultralow temperature region are challenging for 2D superconductors due to the sensitivity to external perturbations. In this work, the resistance saturation induced by external noise, named as "extrinsic anomalous metallic state", is observed in 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductor 4Ha-TaSe2 nanodevices. However, with further decreasing temperature, credible evidence of intrinsic anomalous metallic state is obtained by adequately filtering external radiation. Our work indicates that at ultralow temperatures the anomalous metallic state can be experimentally revealed as the quantum ground state in 2D crystalline TMD superconductors. Besides, Ising superconductivity revealed by ultrahigh in-plane critical field (Bc2//) going beyond the Pauli paramagnetic limit (Bp) is detected in 4Ha-TaSe2, from one-unit-cell device to bulk situation, which might be due to the weak coupling between the TaSe2 sub-monolayers.

The observation of in-plane quantum Griffiths singularity in two-dimensional crystalline superconductors

Quantum Griffiths singularity (QGS) reveals the profound influence of quenched disorder on the quantum phase transitions, characterized by the divergence of the dynamical critical exponent at the boundary of the vortex glass-like phase, named as quantum Griffiths phase. However, in the absence of vortices, whether the QGS can exist under parallel magnetic field remains a puzzle. Here we study the magnetic field induced superconductor-metal transition in ultrathin crystalline PdTe2 films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Remarkably, the QGS emerges under both perpendicular and parallel magnetic field in 4-monolayer PdTe2 films. The direct activated scaling analysis with a new irrelevant correction has been proposed, providing important evidence of QGS. With increasing film thickness to 6 monolayers, the QGS disappears under perpendicular field but persists under parallel field, and this discordance may originate from the differences in microscopic processes. Our work demonstrates the universality of parallel field induced QGS and can stimulate further investigations on novel quantum phase transitions under parallel magnetic field.

Dynamic ordering transitions in charged solid

The phenomenon of group motion is common in nature, ranging from the schools of fish, birds and insects, to avalanches, landslides and sand drift. If we treat objects as collectively moving particles, such phenomena can be studied from a physical point of view, and the research on many-body systems has proved that marvelous effects can arise from the simplest individuals. The motion of numerous individuals presents different dynamic phases related to the ordering of the system. However, it is usually difficult to study the dynamic ordering and their transitions through experiments. Electron bubble states formed in a two-dimensional electron gas, as a type of electron solids, can be driven by an external electric field and provide a platform to study the dynamic collective behaviors. Here, we demonstrate that noise spectrum is a powerful method to investigate the dynamics of bubble states. We observed not only the phenomena from dynamically ordered and disordered structures, but also unexpected alternations between them. Our results show that a dissipative system can convert between chaotic structures and ordered structures when tuning global parameters, which is concealed in conventional transport measurements of resistance or conductance. Moreover, charging the objects to study electrical noise spectrum in collective motions can be an additional approach to revealing dynamic ordering transitions.

Controllable Pareto Multi-Task Learning

A multi-task learning (MTL) system aims at solving multiple related tasks at the same time. With a fixed model capacity, the tasks would be conflicted with each other, and the system usually has to make a trade-off among learning all of them together. For many real-world applications where the trade-off has to be made online, multiple models with different preferences over tasks have to be trained and stored. This work proposes a novel controllable Pareto multi-task learning framework, to enable the system to make real-time trade-off control among different tasks with a single model. To be specific, we formulate the MTL as a preference-conditioned multiobjective optimization problem, with a parametric mapping from preferences to the corresponding trade-off solutions. A single hypernetwork-based multi-task neural network is built to learn all tasks with different trade-off preferences among them, where the hypernetwork generates the model parameters conditioned on the preference. For inference, MTL practitioners can easily control the model performance based on different trade-off preferences in real-time. Experiments on different applications demonstrate that the proposed model is efficient for solving various MTL problems.

Aggregate Modeling and Equilibrium Analysis of the Crowdsourcing Market for Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have the potential of reshaping the human mobility in a wide variety of aspects. This paper focuses on a new possibility that the AV owners have the option of "renting" their AVs to a company, which can use these collected AVs to provide on-demand ride services without any drivers. We call such a mobility market with AV renting options the "AV crowdsourcing market". This paper establishes an aggregate equilibrium model with multiple transport modes to analyze the AV crowdsourcing market. The modeling framework can capture the customers' mode choices and AV owners' rental decisions with the presence of traffic congestion. Then, we explore different scenarios that either maximize the crowdsourcing platform's profit or maximize social welfare. Gradient-based optimization algorithms are designed for solving the problems. The results obtained by numerical examples reveal the welfare enhancement and the strong profitability of the AV crowdsourcing service. However, when the crowdsourcing scale is small, the crowdsourcing platform might not be profitable. A second-best pricing scheme is able to avoid such undesirable cases. The insights generated from the analyses provide guidance for regulators, service providers and citizens to make future decisions regarding the utilization of the AV crowdsourcing markets for serving the good of the society.

Network-level rhythmic control of heterogeneous automated traffic with buses

Guaranteeing the quality of transit service is of great importance to promote the attractiveness of buses and alleviate urban traffic issues such as congestion and pollution. Emerging technologies of automated driving and V2X communication have the potential to enable the accurate control of vehicles and the efficient organization of traffic to enhance both the schedule adherence of buses and the overall network mobility. This study proposes an innovative network-level control scheme for heterogeneous automated traffic composed of buses and private cars under a full connected and automated environment. Inheriting the idea of network-level rhythmic control proposed by Lin et al. (2020), an augmented rhythmic control scheme for heterogeneous traffic, i.e., RC-H, is established to organize the mixed traffic in a rhythmic manner. Realized virtual platoons are designed for accommodating vehicles to pass through the network, including dedicated virtual platoons for buses to provide exclusive right-of-ways (ROWs) on their trips and regular virtual platoons for private cars along with an optimal assignment plan to minimize the total travel cost. A mixed-integer linear program (MILP) is formulated to optimize the RC-H scheme and a bilevel heuristic solution method is designed to relieve the computational burden of MILP. Numerical examples and simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the RC-H scheme under different scenarios. The results show that the bus operation can be guaranteed and the travel delay can be minimized under various demand levels with transit priority. Moreover, compared with traffic signal control strategies, the RC-H scheme has significant advantages in handling massive traffic demand, in terms of both vehicle delay and network throughput.

Spin-orbit phase behaviors of Na2Co2TeO6 at low temperatures

We present a comprehensive study of single crystals of Na2Co2TeO6, a putative Kitaev honeycomb magnet, focusing on its low-temperature phase behaviors. A new thermal phase transition is identified at 31.0 K, below which the system develops a two-dimensional (2D) long-range magnetic order. This order precedes the well-known 3D order below 26.7 K, and is likely driven by strongly anisotropic interactions. Surprisingly, excitations from the 3D order do not support the order's commonly accepted "zigzag" nature, and are instead consistent with a "triple-q" description. The 3D order exerts a fundamental feedback on high-energy excitations that likely involve orbital degrees of freedom, and it remains highly frustrated until a much lower temperature is reached. These findings render Na2Co2TeO6 a spin-orbit entangled frustrated magnet that hosts very rich physics.

Superconductor-metal quantum transition at the EuO-KTaO3 interface

Superconductivity has been one of the most fascinating quantum states of matter for over several decades. Among the superconducting materials, LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface is of particularly interest since superconductivity exists between two insulating materials, which provides it with various unique applications compared with bulk superconductors and makes it a suitable platform to study the quantum Hall effect, charge density wave, superconductivity and magnetism in one device. Therefore, a lot of efforts have been made to search new superconducting oxide interface states with higher superconducting critical temperature (TC). Recently, a superconducting state with TC ~ 2 K has been found at the interface between a ferromagnetic insulator EuO and a band insulator (111)-KTaO3. Here, we report the experimental investigation of the superconductor-metal quantum phase transition of the EuO/KTaO3 interface. Around the transition, a divergence of the dynamical critical exponent is observed, which supports the quantum Griffiths singularity in the EuO/KTaO3 interface. The quantum Griffiths singularity could be attributed to large rare superconducting regions and quenched disorders at the interface. Our results could pave the way for studying the exotic superconducting properties at the EuO/KTaO3 interface.

A Data-Driven Sparse Polynomial Chaos Expansion Method to Assess Probabilistic Total Transfer Capability for Power Systems with Renewables

The increasing uncertainty level caused by growing renewable energy sources (RES) and aging transmission networks poses a great challenge in the assessment of total transfer capability (TTC) and available transfer capability (ATC). In this paper, a novel data-driven sparse polynomial chaos expansion (DDSPCE) method is proposed for estimating the probabilistic characteristics (e.g., mean, variance, probability distribution) of probabilistic TTC (PTTC). Specifically, the proposed method, requiring no pre-assumed probabilistic distributions of random inputs, exploits data sets directly in estimating the PTTC. Besides, a sparse scheme is integrated to improve the computational efficiency. Numerical studies on the modified IEEE 118-bus system demonstrate that the proposed DDSPCE method can achieve accurate estimation for the probabilistic characteristics of PTTC with a high efficiency. Moreover, numerical results reveal the great significance of incorporating discrete random inputs in PTTC and ATC assessment, which nevertheless was not given sufficient attention.

Multi-Vehicle Routing Problems with Soft Time Windows: A Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Approach

Multi-vehicle routing problem with soft time windows (MVRPSTW) is an indispensable constituent in urban logistics distribution systems. Over the past decade, numerous methods for MVRPSTW have been proposed, but most are based on heuristic rules that require a large amount of computation time. With the current rapid increase of logistics demands, traditional methods incur the dilemma between computational efficiency and solution quality. To efficiently solve the problem, we propose a novel reinforcement learning algorithm called the Multi-Agent Attention Model that can solve routing problem instantly benefit from lengthy offline training. Specifically, the vehicle routing problem is regarded as a vehicle tour generation process, and an encoder-decoder framework with attention layers is proposed to generate tours of multiple vehicles iteratively. Furthermore, a multi-agent reinforcement learning method with an unsupervised auxiliary network is developed for the model training. By evaluated on four synthetic networks with different scales, the results demonstrate that the proposed method consistently outperforms Google OR-Tools and traditional methods with little computation time. In addition, we validate the robustness of the well-trained model by varying the number of customers and the capacities of vehicles.
