Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces for THz Communications: Fundamentals, Key Solutions, and System Prototyping

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) have emerged as a cost-effective technology for terahertz (THz) communications by enabling programmable control of the wireless environment. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of IRSs-aided THz communications, covering hardware designs, advanced signal processing techniques, and practical deployment strategies. It first examines key THz reconfigurable metasurface architectures, including electronic, optical, phase-change material, and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS)-based implementations, highlighting their reconfiguration mechanisms and challenges. Then, fundamental effects including near field and beam squint in wideband THz systems are analyzed, along with their impacts on system performance. The paper further explores conventional and beam-squint-assisted channel estimation methods, innovative beam management strategies, and deployment considerations across large- and small-scale scenarios. Practical experiments at 220 gigahertz (GHz) validate the effectiveness of IRS in improving signal strength and communication reliability for both single-user and multi-user setups.

A Flexible Design for Beam Squint Effect Suppression in IRS-Aided THz Communications

In this paper, we study employing movable components on both base station (BS) and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in a wideband terahertz (THz) multiple-input-single-output (MISO) system, where the BS is equipped with a movable antenna (MA) array and the IRS consists of movable subarrays. To alleviate double beam squint effect caused by the coupling of beam squint at the BS and IRS, we propose to maximize the minimal received power across a wide THz spectrum by delicately configuring the positions of MAs and IRS subarrays, which is highly challenging. By adopting majorization-minimization (MM) methodology, we develop an algorithm to tackle the aforementioned optimization. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm and the benefit of utilizing movable components on the BS and IRS to mitigate double beam squint effect in wideband THz communications.

Joint Beamforming and Position Optimization for IRS-Aided SWIPT with Movable Antennas

Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) has been envisioned as a promising technology to support ubiquitous connectivity and reliable sustainability in Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks, which, however, generally suffers from severe attenuation caused by long distance propagation, leading to inefficient wireless power transfer (WPT) for energy harvesting receivers (EHRs). This paper proposes to introduce emerging intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and movable antenna (MA) technologies into SWIPT systems aiming at enhancing information transmission for information decoding receivers (IDRs) and improving receive power of EHRs. We consider to maximize the weighted sum-rate of IDRs via jointly optimizing the active and passive beamforming at the base station (BS) and IRS, respectively, as well as the positions of MAs, while guaranteeing the requirements of all EHRs. To tackle this challenging task due to the non-convexity of associated optimization, we develop an efficient algorithm combining weighted minimal mean square error (WMMSE), block coordinate descent (BCD), majorization-minimization (MM), and penalty duality decomposition (PDD) frameworks. Besides, we present a feasibility characterization method to examine the achievability of EHRs' requirements. Simulation results demonstrate the significant benefits of our proposed solutions. Particularly, the optimized IRS configuration may exhibit higher performance gain than MA counterpart under our considered scenario.

Wireless Communication with Cross-Linked Rotatable Antenna Array: Architecture Design and Rotation Optimization

Rotatable antenna (RA) technology can harness additional spatial degrees of freedom by enabling the dynamic three-dimensional orientation control of each antenna. Unfortunately, the hardware cost and control complexity of traditional RA systems is proportional to the number of RAs. To address the issue, we consider a cross-linked (CL) RA structure, which enables the coordinated rotation of multiple antennas, thereby offering a cost-effective solution. To evaluate the performance of the CL-RA array, we investigate a CL-RA-aided uplink system. Specifically, we first establish system models for both antenna element-level and antenna panel-level rotation. Then, we formulate a sum rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the receive beamforming at the base station and the rotation angles. For the antenna element-level rotation, we derive the optimal solution of the CL-RA array under the single-user case. Subsequently, for two rotation schemes, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm to solve the formulated problem in the multi-user case, where the receive beamforming and the antenna rotation angles are obtained by applying the minimum mean square error method and feasible direction method, respectively. In addition, considering the hardware limitations, we apply the genetic algorithm to address the discrete rotation angles selection problem. Simulation results show that by carefully designing the row-column partition scheme, the performance of the CL-RA architecture is quite close to that of the flexible antenna orientation scheme. Moreover, the CL antenna element-level scheme surpasses the CL antenna panel-level scheme by 25% and delivers a 128% performance improvement over conventional fixed-direction antennas.

Joint Transmit and Receive Antenna Orientation Design for Secure MIMO Communications

Physical layer security (PLS) is a promising paradigm for safeguarding 6G wireless networks by exploiting the inherent characteristics of wireless channels. However, the efficiency of conventional PLS is often limited by fixed orientation antennas. This paper investigates a rotatable antenna (RA)-aided secure multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system, where both the transmitter and the receiver are equipped with RAs in the presence of an eavesdropper. By dynamically optimizing the orientations of RAs, we can proactively reshape the effective MIMO channels to enhance legitimate transmission while simultaneously suppressing information leakage to the eavesdropper. We formulate a secrecy rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming, artificial noise (AN) covariance matrix, and the transmit/receive RA orientations, subject to the transmit power budget and antenna orientation constraints. To tackle the resulting highly coupled and non-convex problem, we first study a simplified single-input single-output (SISO) case to reveal the structure of the optimal RA orientation. For the general MIMO case, we develop an alternating optimization algorithm by reformulating the original problem through the minimum mean-square error framework. In particular, the transmit beamforming and AN covariance matrix are derived in semi-closed forms, while the RA orientations are updated via the Riemannian Frank-Wolfe method. The proposed design is further extended to the multi-receiver secure transmission scenario. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme converges rapidly and achieves significant secrecy rate gains over the conventional fixed-orientation scheme.

Convergence-Latency-Aware Adaptive Modulation and Resource Allocation in RIS-Assisted Wireless Federated Learning

Federated learning (FL) over wireless networks suffers from significant training latency and degraded convergence due to unreliable wireless transmission, especially under blocked propagation environments. Although reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can improve communication reliability, existing wireless FL studies rarely characterize the trade-off between learning convergence and communication delay under modulation-dependent transmission errors. In this paper, we consider a wireless FL system operating under RIS-assisted blocked-link propagation scenarios, and focus on adaptive modulation and sub-channel allocation for convergence-latency aware communication design. By characterizing the effect of symbol errors on uploaded local gradients, we derive a convergence-related upper bound that reveals the impact of symbol error rate (SER) on FL loss decay. Based on this result, we formulate a joint convergence-latency optimization problem, which is cast as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, and solve it using a low-complexity hybrid alternating optimization framework. Extensive experiments on MNIST, CIFAR-10, and Speech Commands show that the proposed scheme consistently achieves faster convergence and higher test accuracy than existing adaptive communication schemes, especially in complex tasks and challenging wireless scenarios.

Transmissive RIS Transceiver-Empowered ISAC Systems: Energy Efficiency Optimization for Perfect and Imperfect CSI

In this paper, a novel transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (TRIS) transceiver is employed to enable an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system supporting both communication and sensing. Under both perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI), we study the transmit beamforming design for the TRIS transceiver to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE), subject to per-user minimum-rate guarantees, a minimum beampattern gain toward the sensing target, and per-antenna power constraints. The corresponding EE maximization problems are challenging to solve due to the fractional objective and non-convex constraints. In particular, under imperfect CSI, the resulting semi-infinite constraints further complicate the problem. For the perfect CSI case, we first apply the fractional programming (FP) methodology to obtain more tractable reformulations of the rate functions, and then propose an iterative algorithm based on the majorization-minimization (MM) framework. For the imperfect CSI case, we utilize the S-Procedure to transform the semi-infinite inequality constraints into linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), and further develop an efficient MM-based algorithm with the aid of slack variables. Numerical results demonstrate the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and validate the EE gains of the TRIS transceiver-enabled ISAC system.

Transmit Beamforming Design for Integrated Sensing and Communication Using Transmissive RIS Transceiver

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a key technology for future wireless networks, calling for hardware-efficient architectures to jointly support communication and sensing. In this paper, a transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (TRIS) transceiver is leveraged to enable an ISAC system. Under the considered system model, we investigate transmit beamforming design for the TRIS transceiver to maximize the sum-rate/beampattern gain, subject to the predefined sensing beampattern gain/communication rate thresholds and the per-unit power constraints of the TRIS transceiver. Since the objective functions and constraints are non-convex, the above two optimization problems are highly challenging. To resolve the difficult optimization problems, we combine the fractional programming (FP) method and the majorization-minimization (MM) framework to develop second-order cone programming (SOCP)-based solutions. Since the per-element power constraints introduce a large number of constraints, this increases the complexity of solving the optimization problems. By splitting the coupling constraints and applying the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework, we propose two analytic-based algorithms for efficiently updating the beamformer configurations in the sum-rate and beampattern gain maximization problems, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms, and show that the low-complexity algorithms achieve performance close to the SOCP-based benchmarks with substantially reduced computational complexity.

Constrained Tensor Decomposition-Based Target Sensing for Sparse Non-Uniform Array-Enabled AFDM ISAC Systems

Sparse non-uniform array-enabled affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) is a promising candidate for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), while its performance critically depends on accurate target parameter estimation. In this paper, we propose a constrained tensor decomposition-based sensing framework for delay, Doppler, and angle estimation. Specifically, a manifold-constrained alternating least squares (ALS) algorithm is developed by exploiting the sparse array geometry structure, enabling robust factor matrix extraction and direct angle estimation. From the decomposed factor matrices, we further apply an iterative one dimensional golden section search to refine delay and Doppler shift. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm nearly attains Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) and significantly outperforms unconstrained ALS and conventional methods, validating its effectiveness for sparse non-uniform array-enabled AFDM ISAC systems.

Reconfigurable Holographic Surface for Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer

In this paper, we propose to use a novel reconfigurable holographic surface (RHS) to improve the performance of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) by exploiting the additional spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs) enabled by the holographic interference principle. Specifically, we study an RHS-empowered SWIPT system in which the digital beamformer at the base station (BS) and the holographic beamformer at the RHS are jointly optimized to maximize the weighted sum-rate of information-decoding (ID) users while guaranteeing a minimum harvested energy requirement for each energy-harvesting (EH) user. Due to the non-convexity of the optimization problem, the weighted sum-rate maximization problem is challenging to solve. We first adopt the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) method to transform the objective into a more tractable form. We then develop an iterative optimization framework, where the BS digital beamforming and the RHS holographic beamforming subproblems are solved via the majorization-minimization (MM) method. Since solving each subproblem can incur prohibitive complexity as the variable dimension increases, we further propose low-complexity solutions for the two subproblems based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) methodology. Numerical results validate the convergence behavior of the proposed algorithms and demonstrate that the RHS-aided BS achieves significant performance gains over a conventional fully-digital BS benchmark. Moreover, the proposed low-complexity algorithms substantially reduce computational complexity while maintaining nearly the same performance.

Spacelike-Collinear Scattering by the Method of Regions

We study the spacelike-collinear limit of gauge-theory scattering amplitudes using the Method of Regions. The corresponding splitting amplitude violates strict collinear factorisation through its dependence on the non-collinear partons. While the associated colour dependence has long been known, starting at two loops the splitting amplitude also acquires dependence on their kinematics. We show that this kinematic dependence originates from a unique hidden region present in the asymptotic expansion of the five-point amplitude in the spacelike-collinear limit, but absent in the timelike limit. More generally, we propose that hidden regions provide the mechanism by which crossing-related asymptotic limits cease to be analytically connected. We develop a general algorithm for the systematic identification of hidden regions. Applying it to the five-point amplitude in super Yang-Mills theory, we compute the hidden-region contributions to the complete set of basis integrals and recover the exact kinematically dependent factorisation-violating splitting amplitude. In momentum space, the hidden region is characterised by soft and Glauber loop momenta. This explains why the Wilson-line calculation captures the complete kinematic dependence, thereby accounting for the observed universality across gauge theories.

The light carrying orbital angular momentum through time-varying scattering media using dual orthogonal-polarization channels

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light can be used as a degree of freedom for optical communication. However, the reliable transmission of OAM beams through time-varying scattering media remains challenging. In this paper, we report an approach for OAM transmission through time-varying scattering media using dual orthogonal-polarization channels. A perfect vortex beam (PVB) is generated and transmitted at one channel, and the plane wave is employed as a reference beam at another channel. With the cross-correlation obtained between the recorded speckle patterns at each single-shot measurement, the data can be retrieved without prior knowledge about time-varying scattering media. It is revealed that the multiplexed PVB can be applied to generate recognizable coherent-superposition patterns in cross-correlation images. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can be applied to transmit the data through time-varying scattering media, and high robustness can be achieved. The proposed method could open up an avenue for the development of OAM transmission in harsh environments.

Beyond Beamforming: Phase-and-Gain Channel Shaping via Rotatable Antenna Arrays

This paper investigates geometry-reconfigurable transmission for multiuser communication systems enabled by a rotatable antenna array. In contrast to conventional fixed arrays, the proposed architecture jointly exploits array pose adjustment and element-level boresight steering, thereby reshaping both the array-induced phase responses and the direction-dependent channel gains. We formulate a weighted sum-rate maximization problem that jointly optimizes the transmit beamformers, array pose, and element boresights under practical visibility and steering constraints. To reveal the underlying design principles, we first provide a geometric interpretation via zero-forcing analysis, showing that the resulting rates stem from both channel-strength enhancement and spatial-separability improvement. Specifically, array-pose rotation improves inter-user channel orthogonality even with isotropic elements, whereas directional elements introduce a tradeoff between phase-based spatial separation and boresight-dependent gain alignment. Motivated by these insights, we develop an efficient optimization framework that jointly coordinates transmit beamforming, array-pose adaptation, and element-boresight steering to exploit the geometry-induced phase-and-gain channel-shaping capability. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed joint design outperforms fixed-array, pose-only, and boresight-only benchmarks, with larger gains achieved under more directive element patterns and tighter boresight-steering constraints.

Ultra-Low-Cost Hybrid Beamforming: A New Static-Connection Architecture with Sparse Phase-Shifter Sharing

Hybrid beamforming is a promising solution for high-frequency multi-antenna wireless systems, but its implementation is constrained by the cost and complexity of analog phase-shifter (PS) networks. Although sub-connected architectures simplify the analog network, their conventional realization still requires a dedicated PS for each antenna, causing considerable layout area, wiring, calibration, and control overheads. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel static-connection architecture with sparse PSs for ultra-low-cost sub-connected hybrid beamforming, where antennas within each sub-array share a PS through an optimized fixed PS-to-antenna connection matrix. The proposed architecture preserves static connections while enabling dynamic beam control via adaptive PS phase-shift adjustments and digital precoding. For the single-radio-frequency (RF)-chain scenario, the sparse-PS connection design is transformed into an antenna-grouping problem, with analytically characterized structural properties and an efficient algorithm. For the multi-RF-chain scenario, we develop a quality-of-service (QoS)-majorization-minimization (MM) algorithm to handle the mixed discrete-continuous optimization problem. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed architecture reduces the PS count while preserving most beamforming capability of the traditional full-PS sub-connected architecture. In particular, the proposed design achieves PS-count reductions of 37.5% and 62.5% in single-RF-chain and multi-RF-chain systems, respectively, while avoiding deep-null and grating-lobe degradations associated with deterministic connection schemes. These results provide engineering insights into static sparse-PS sharing: the key to hardware-efficient hybrid beamforming is not merely reducing the PS count, but also preserving essential analog-domain degrees of freedom through optimized PS connection topologies.

Low-Altitude UAV Tracking via Sensing-Assisted Predictive Beamforming

Sensing-assisted predictive beamforming shows significant promise for enhancing various future unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. However, the impact of such beamforming technique on the communication reliability was largely unexplored and challenging to characterize. To fill this research gap and tackle this issue, this paper proposes a cellular-connected UAV tracking scheme leveraging extended Kalman filtering (EKF), where the predicted UAV trajectory, sensing duration ratio, and target constant received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are jointly optimized to maximize the outage capacity at each time slot. To address the implicit nature of the objective function, analytical outage probability (OP) approximations are proposed based on second-order Taylor expansions, providing an efficient and full characterization of outage capacity. Subsequently, an efficient algorithm is proposed based on a combination of bisection search and successive convex approximation (SCA) to address the non-convex optimization problem with guaranteed convergence. To further reduce computational complexity, a second efficient algorithm is developed based on alternating optimization (AO). Simulation results validate the accuracy of the derived OP approximations, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms, and the significant outage capacity enhancement over various benchmarks. Furthermore, we show that the optimized predicted UAV trajectory tends to be parallel to the base station's uniform linear array antennas with a nonzero minimum distance, indicating a trade-off between decreasing path loss and enjoying wide beam coverage for outage capacity maximization.

Sensing for Reliable UAV Communication: Robust Trajectory and Resource Optimization in Low-Altitude Networks

In low-altitude wireless networks, sensing-aided communication has emerged as a promising integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) paradigm for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) tracking and communication. This paper investigates reliable sensing-aided communication for multiple cellular-connected UAVs under mobility uncertainties. Specifically, we maximize the minimum outage capacity among UAVs by jointly optimizing their real-time predicted positions, as well as the base station (BS) transmit power and bandwidth allocations. To address the non-convex and intractable maximum tolerable outage probability (OP) constraints, two robust optimization schemes are proposed based on a continuous confidence ellipse (CE) and discretized inverse-whitened sectors (IWSs), respectively. For the CE-based scheme, an efficient algorithm is proposed to optimize the predicted UAV positions individually via block successive convex approximation, followed by convex resource allocation. For the IWS-based scheme, an IWS-based OP approximation is proposed to facilitate the robust optimization, based on which a low-complexity IWS selection method is proposed to decouple the optimization variables. Then, a similar sequential optimization algorithm is proposed based on the projected gradient descent approach. The two algorithms are further unified into a common trajectory-resource optimization framework, revealing a low-complexity structure for robust UAV trajectory and resource management. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of our proposed OP approximation, demonstrate the significant outage capacity improvement of the proposed robust optimization schemes over benchmark schemes, and illustrate the superiority of the IWS-based scheme over the CE-based scheme.

Enhancing VLBI Capability with the SKA-Mid and the Jingdong 120-m Radio Telescope

The Jingdong Radio Telescope (JRT) is a 120-meter fully steerable radio telescope currently under construction in Jingdong County, Yunnan Province, China. Located at a relatively low latitude (24.5 degree), the JRT will enable observations of nearly 90% of the sky. Equipped with two broadband single-pixel receivers covering 1-8 GHz and 6-18 GHz, and a powerful digital backend, the telescope will support single-dish studies of various radio sources-particularly millisecond pulsars for enhancing the detection of nanohertz gravitational waves. In addition to single-dish capabilities, the JRT is expected to contribute approximately 800 hours annually to international Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations via a standard VLBI backend. When operating in conjunction with the phased-up SKA-Mid, the JRT will significantly enhance the technical and scientific capabilities of existing VLBI networks. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the JRT's VLBI module and explores its potential to improve joint VLBI observations with current VLBI networks. Our analysis suggests that coordinated VLBI observations involving both the SKA-Mid and the JRT have the potential to significantly advance the field. For early sciences, we also highlight a few highly promising scientific cases, e.g. measuring the distance to PSR J0437-4715 with <1 ly accuracy and exploring jet formation with an event-horizon-scale resolution in M60*.

A Jet from a Nearly Dormant Black Hole

Most galaxies host supermassive black holes (SMBHs) that remain weakly accreting or dormant for much of their lifetimes. At the lowest accretion rates, these systems may represent the transition between active nuclei and dormant black holes, but whether they can still launch collimated jets remains unclear. The nuclei in our Galaxy (\sgra) and M31 are key examples of this regime, although no clear jet structure has yet been detected in either source. Here we report multi-frequency very long baseline interferometric observations of \Msixty\ (NGC~4649), a nearby elliptical galaxy hosting a nearly dormant SMBH with an Eddington ratio of $\sim10^{-8}$. We detect a compact two-sided jet with an unusually steep synchrotron spectrum, demonstrating that collimated outflows can persist even under nearly dormant accretion conditions. The apparent radio core exhibits an unprecedentedly steep frequency-dependent position shift toward the SMBH, locating the central engine only $\sim57\,μ$as, corresponding to a projected distance of $\sim10$ Schwarzschild radii, upstream of the 8.37-GHz core. The observed jet morphology and steep core-shift behaviour are reproduced by general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic and radiative-transfer simulations, indicating a magnetically dominated, non-equipartition jet-launching region that departs from the standard conical equipartition picture. These results provide direct observational evidence that jet production can survive near the dormant SMBHs and establish \Msixty\ as a unique laboratory for probing jet formation on event-horizon scales in the lowest-accretion SMBH regime.
