Fast radio bursts as a cosmic probe?

We discuss the possibility of using fast radio bursts (FRBs), if cosmological, as a viable cosmic probe. We find out that the contribution of the host galaxies to the detected dispersion measures can be inapparent for the FRBs not from galaxy centers or star forming regions. The inhomogeneity of the intergalactic medium (IGM), however, causes significant deviation of the dispersion measure from that predicted in the simplified homogeneous IGM model for individual event. Fortunately, with sufficient FRBs along different sightlines but within a very narrow redshift interval (e.g., $Δz \sim 0.05$ or $Δz \sim 0.05(1+z)$), the mean from averaging observed dispersion measures does not suffer such a problem and hence may be used as a cosmic probe. We show that in the optimistic case (e.g., tens FRBs in each $Δz$ have been measured; the most distant FRBs were at redshift $\geq 3$; the host galaxies and the FRB sources contribute little to the detected dispersion measures) and with all the uncertainties (i.e. the inhomogeneity of the IGM, the contribution and uncertainty of host galaxies as well as the evolution and error of $f_{\rm IGM}$) considered, FRBs could help constrain the equation of state of dark energy.

A Multi-parent Memetic Algorithm for the Linear Ordering Problem

In this paper, we present a multi-parent memetic algorithm (denoted by MPM) for solving the classic Linear Ordering Problem (LOP). The MPM algorithm integrates in particular a multi-parent recombination operator for generating offspring solutions and a distance-and-quality based criterion for pool updating. Our MPM algorithm is assessed on 8 sets of 484 widely used LOP instances and compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms in the literature, showing the efficacy of the MPM algorithm. Specifically, for the 255 instances whose optimal solutions are unknown, the MPM is able to detect better solutions than the previous best-known ones for 66 instances, while matching the previous best-known results for 163 instances. Furthermore, some additional experiments are carried out to analyze the key elements and important parameters of MPM.

The typical manners of dynamic crack propagation along the metal/ceramics interfaces: A molecular dynamics study

This letter addresses the issue of interfacial crack propagation mechanisms on various interfaces with using molecular dynamics. Four different interfacial crack propagation manners are recognized by MD simulations: 1, the crack propagates along the interface strictly; 2, the nucleation of a twinning at the crack tip leads to the crack tip blunting; 3, the daughter crack appears ahead of the main crack and then coalesces to the mother crack; 4, the crack tip blunts with stacking fault nucleation at the crack tip. Furthermore, the adhesive strength coefficient λis used to identify the type of the interface. Interface with λ> 0.9 means an ordered interface, and interfacial crack propagates in mode I or mode II. While λ< 0.9 represents a disordered interface, and mode III and mode IV of the interfacial cracks are preferred. This work illustrates the effect of adhesive strength of interface on the mechanism of crack propagation along the interface of metal/ceramics nano-composites.

Acyclic edge coloring of graphs

An {\em acyclic edge coloring} of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring such that the subgraph induced by any two color classes is a linear forest (an acyclic graph with maximum degree at most two). The {\em acyclic chromatic index} $\chiup_{a}'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the least number of colors needed in an acyclic edge coloring of $G$. Fiamčík (1978) conjectured that $\chiup_{a}'(G) \leq Δ(G) + 2$, where $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. This conjecture is well known as Acyclic Edge Coloring Conjecture (AECC). A graph $G$ with maximum degree at most $κ$ is {\em $κ$-deletion-minimal} if $\chiup_{a}'(G) > κ$ and $\chiup_{a}'(H) \leq κ$ for every proper subgraph $H$ of $G$. The purpose of this paper is to provide many structural lemmas on $κ$-deletion-minimal graphs. By using the structural lemmas, we firstly prove that AECC is true for the graphs with maximum average degree less than four (\autoref{NMAD4}). We secondly prove that AECC is true for the planar graphs without triangles adjacent to cycles of length at most four, with an additional condition that every $5$-cycle has at most three edges contained in triangles (\autoref{NoAdjacent}), from which we can conclude some known results as corollaries. We thirdly prove that every planar graph $G$ without intersecting triangles satisfies $\chiup_{a}'(G) \leq Δ(G) + 3$ (\autoref{NoIntersect}). Finally, we consider one extreme case and prove it: if $G$ is a graph with $Δ(G) \geq 3$ and all the $3^{+}$-vertices are independent, then $\chiup_{a}'(G) = Δ(G)$. We hope the structural lemmas will shed some light on the acyclic edge coloring problems.

Inflow Problem for the One-dimensional Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations under Large Initial Perturbation

This paper is concerned with the inflow problem for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. For such a problem, Matsumura and Nishihara showed in [A. Matsumura and K. Nishihara, Large-time behaviors of solutions to an inflow problem in the half space for a one-dimensional system of compressible viscous gas. Comm. Math. Phys. 222 (2001), 449-474] that there exists boundary layer solution to the inflow problem and both the boundary layer solution, the rarefaction wave, and the superposition of boundary layer solution and rarefaction wave are nonlinear stable under small initial perturbation. The main purpose of this paper is to show that similar stability results for the boundary layer solution and the supersonic rarefaction wave still hold for a class of large initial perturbation which can allow the initial density to have large oscillation. The proofs are given by an elementary energy method and the key point is to deduce the desired lower and upper bounds on the density function.

Minimal counterexamples and discharging method

Recently, the author found that there is a common mistake in some papers by using minimal counterexample and discharging method. We first discuss how the mistake is generated, and give a method to fix the mistake. As an illustration, we consider total coloring of planar or toroidal graphs, and show that: if $G$ is a planar or toroidal graph with maximum degree at most $κ- 1$, where $κ\geq 11$, then the total chromatic number is at most $κ$.

Long properly colored cycles in edge colored complete graphs

Let $K_{n}^{c}$ denote a complete graph on $n$ vertices whose edges are colored in an arbitrary way. Let $Δ^{\mathrm{mon}} (K_{n}^{c})$ denote the maximum number of edges of the same color incident with a vertex of $K_{n}^{c}$. A properly colored cycle (path) in $K_{n}^{c}$ is a cycle (path) in which adjacent edges have distinct colors. B. Bollobás and P. Erdös (1976) proposed the following conjecture: if $Δ^{\mathrm{mon}} (K_{n}^{c})<\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor$, then $K_{n}^{c}$ contains a properly colored Hamiltonian cycle. Li, Wang and Zhou proved that if $Δ^{\mathrm{mon}} (K_{n}^{c})< \lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor$, then $K_{n}^{c}$ contains a properly colored cycle of length at least $\lceil \frac{n+2}{3}\rceil+1$. In this paper, we improve the bound to $\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil + 2$.

Energy-aware Vehicle Routing in Networks with Charging Nodes

We study the problem of routing vehicles with energy constraints through a network where there are at least some charging nodes. We seek to minimize the total elapsed time for vehicles to reach their destinations by determining routes as well as recharging amounts when the vehicles do not have adequate energy for the entire journey. For a single vehicle, we formulate a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem and derive properties of the optimal solution allowing it to be decomposed into two simpler problems. For a multi-vehicle problem, where traffic congestion effects are included, we use a similar approach by grouping vehicles into subflows. We also provide an alternative flow optimization formulation leading to a computationally simpler problem solution with minimal loss in accuracy. Numerical results are included to illustrate these approaches.

Selection and Mid-infrared Spectroscopy of Ultraluminous Star-Forming Galaxies at z~2

Starting from a sample of 24 \micron\ sources in the Extended Groth Strip, we use 3.6 to 8 \micron\ color criteria to select ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at $z\sim2$. Spectroscopy from 20-38 \micron\ of 14 objects verifies their nature and gives their redshifts. Multi-wavelength data for these objects imply stellar masses ${>}10^{11}$ \Msun\ and star formation rates $\ge$410 \Msun yr$^{-1}$. Four objects of this sample observed at 1.6 \micron\ (rest-frame visible) with {\it HST}/WFC3 show diverse morphologies, suggesting that multiple formation processes create ULIRGs. Four of the 14 objects show signs of active galactic nuclei, but the luminosity appears to be dominated by star formation in all cases.

Tuning the Quantum Phase Transition of Bosons in Optical Lattices via Periodic Modulation of s-Wave Scattering Length

We consider interacting bosons in a 2D square and a 3D cubic optical lattice with a periodic modulation of the s-wave scattering length. At first we map the underlying periodically driven Bose-Hubbard model for large enough driving frequencies approximately to an effective time-independent Hamiltonian with a conditional hopping. Combining different analytical approaches with quantum Monte Carlo simulations then reveals that the superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition still exists despite the periodic driving and that the location of the quantum phase boundary turns out to depend quite sensitively on the driving amplitude. A more detailed quantitative analysis shows even that the effect of driving can be described within the usual Bose-Hubbard model provided that the hopping is rescaled appropriately with the driving amplitude. This finding indicates that the Bose-Hubbard model with a periodically driven s-wave scattering length and the usual Bose-Hubbard model belong to the same universality class from the point of view of critical phenomena.

Plasmon scattering from holes: from single hole scattering to Young's experiment

In this article, the scattering of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) into photons at holes is investigated. A local, electrically excited source of SPPs using a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) produces an outgoing circular plasmon wave on a thick (200 nm) gold film on glass containing holes of 250, 500 and 1000 nm diameter. Fourier plane images of the photons from hole-scattered plasmons show that the larger the hole diameter, the more directional the scattered radiation. These results are confirmed by a model where the hole is considered as a distribution of horizontal dipoles whose relative amplitudes, directions, and phases depend linearly on the local SPP electric field. An SPP-Young's experiment is also performed, where the STM-excited SPP-wave is incident on a pair of 1 $μ$m diameter holes in the thick gold film. The visibility of the resulting fringes in the Fourier plane is analyzed to show that the polarization of the electric field is maintained when SPPs scatter into photons. From this SPP-Young's experiment, an upper bound of $\approx$ 200 nm for the radius of this STM-excited source of surface plasmon polaritons is determined.

Modeling Attractiveness and Multiple Clicks in Sponsored Search Results

Click models are an important tool for leveraging user feedback, and are used by commercial search engines for surfacing relevant search results. However, existing click models are lacking in two aspects. First, they do not share information across search results when computing attractiveness. Second, they assume that users interact with the search results sequentially. Based on our analysis of the click logs of a commercial search engine, we observe that the sequential scan assumption does not always hold, especially for sponsored search results. To overcome the above two limitations, we propose a new click model. Our key insight is that sharing information across search results helps in identifying important words or key-phrases which can then be used to accurately compute attractiveness of a search result. Furthermore, we argue that the click probability of a position as well as its attractiveness changes during a user session and depends on the user's past click experience. Our model seamlessly incorporates the effect of externalities (quality of other search results displayed in response to a user query), user fatigue, as well as pre and post-click relevance of a sponsored search result. We propose an efficient one-pass inference scheme and empirically evaluate the performance of our model via extensive experiments using the click logs of a large commercial search engine.

Transformed sufficient dimension reduction

A novel general framework is proposed in this paper for dimension reduction in regression to fill the gap between linear and fully nonlinear dimension reduction. The main idea is to transform first each of the raw predictors monotonically, and then search for a low-dimensional projection in the space defined by the transformed variables. Both user-specified and data-driven transformations are suggested. In each case, the methodology is discussed first in a general manner, and a representative method, as an example, is then proposed and evaluated by simulation. The proposed methods are applied to a real data set for illustration.

On the Optimum Energy Efficiency for Flat-fading Channels with Rate-dependent Circuit Power

This paper investigates the optimum energy efficiency (EE) and the corresponding spectral efficiency (SE) for a communication link operating over a flat-fading channel. The EE is evaluated by the total energy consumption for transmitting per message bit. Three channel cases are considered, namely static channel with channel state information available at transmitter (CSIT), fast-varying (FV) channel with channel distribution information available at transmitter (CDIT), and FV channel with CSIT. A general circuit power model is considered. For all the three channel cases, the tradeoff between the EE and SE is studied. It is shown that the EE improves strictly as the SE increases from 0 to the optimum SE, and then strictly degrades as the SE increases beyond the optimum SE. The impact of κ, ρ and other system parameters on the optimum EE and corresponding SE is investigated to obtain insight. Some of the important and interesting results for all the channel cases include: (1) when κ increases the SE corresponding to the optimum EE should keep unchanged if ϕ(R) = R, but reduced if ϕ(R) is strictly convex of R; (2) when the rate-independent circuit power ρ increases, the SE corresponding to the optimum EE has to be increased. A polynomial-complexity algorithm is developed with the bisection method to find the optimum SE. The insight is corroborated and the optimum EE for the three cases are compared by simulation results.

Generalized Effective Potential Landau Theory for Bosonic Quadratic Superlattices

We study the properties of the Bose-Hubbard model for a quadratic optical superlattice. To this end we generalize a recently established effective potential Landau theory for a single component to the case of multi components and find not only the characteristic incompressible solid phases with fractional filling, but also obtain the underlying quantum phase diagram in the whole parameter region at zero temperature. Comparing our analytic results with corresponding ones from quantum Monte Carlo simulations demonstrates the high accuracy of the generalized effective potential Landau theory (GEPLT). Finally, we comment on the advantages and disadvantages of the GEPLT in view of a direct comparison with a corresponding decoupled mean-field theory.

Global Existence and Decay of Solutions to the Fokker-Planck-Boltzmann Equation

The Cauchy problem to the Fokker-Planck-Boltzmann equation under Grad's angular cut-off assumption is investigated. When the initial data is a small perturbation of an equilibrium state, global existence and optimal temporal decay estimates of classical solutions are established. Our analysis is based on the coercivity of the Fokker-Planck operator and an elementary weighted energy method.

The viscosity of silica fibres

The viscosity of an optical fibre over 1000 to 1150 °C is studied by inscribing an optical fibre Bragg grating that can withstand temperatures up to 1200 °C and monitoring fibre elongation under load through the Bragg wavelength shift. This optical interrogation offers high accuracy and reliability compared to direct measurements of elongation, particularly at lower temperatures, thus avoiding significant experimental error. An excellent Arrhenius fit is obtained from which an activation energy for viscous flow of Ea = 450 kJ/mol is extracted; addition of an additional temperature dependent pre-exponential does not change this value. This value is less than that idealised by some literature but consistent with other literature. The log plot of viscosity is overall found to be consistent with that reported in the literature for silica measurements on rod and beams, but substantially higher to past work reported for optical fibres. The discrepancy from an idealised activation energy Ea ~ 700 kJ/mol may be explained by noting the higher fictive temperature of the fibre. On the other hand, past optical fibre results obtained by beam bending with much lower values leave questions regarding the method of viscosity measurement and the time taken for structural equilibration. We note that because regenerated gratings already involve post-annealing to stabilise their operation at higher temperature, the structures are much more relaxed compared to normal fibres. This work highlights the need to stabilize components for operation in harsh environments before their application, despite some mechanical compromise. Given the increasing expectation of all-optical waveguide technologies operating above 1000 °C, the need to study the behaviour of glass over the long term brings added significance to the basic understanding of glass in this regime.
