On the diameter of total domination vertex critical graphs

In this paper, we consider various types of domination vertex critical graphs, including total domination vertex critical graphs, independent domination vertex critical graphs and connected domination vertex critical graphs. We provide upper bounds on the diameter of them, two of which are sharp.

Further result on acyclic chromatic index of planar graphs

An acyclic edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring such that every cycle is colored with at least three colors. The acyclic chromatic index $\chiup_{a}'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the least number of colors in an acyclic edge coloring of $G$. It was conjectured that $\chiup'_{a}(G)\leq Δ(G) + 2$ for any simple graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)$. In this paper, we prove that every planar graph $G$ admits an acyclic edge coloring with $Δ(G) + 6$ colors.

Strong chromatic index of k-degenerate graphs

A {\em strong edge coloring} of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring in which every color class is an induced matching. The {\em strong chromatic index} $\chiup_{s}'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of colors in a strong edge coloring of $G$. In this note, we improve a result by D{\k e}bski \etal [Strong chromatic index of sparse graphs, arXiv:1301.1992v1] and show that the strong chromatic index of a $k$-degenerate graph $G$ is at most $(4k-2) \cdot Δ(G) - 2k^{2} + 1$. As a direct consequence, the strong chromatic index of a $2$-degenerate graph $G$ is at most $6Δ(G) - 7$, which improves the upper bound $10Δ(G) - 10$ by Chang and Narayanan [Strong chromatic index of 2-degenerate graphs, J. Graph Theory 73 (2013) (2) 119--126]. For a special subclass of $2$-degenerate graphs, we obtain a better upper bound, namely if $G$ is a graph such that all of its $3^{+}$-vertices induce a forest, then $\chiup_{s}'(G) \leq 4 Δ(G) -3$; as a corollary, every minimally $2$-connected graph $G$ has strong chromatic index at most $4 Δ(G) - 3$. Moreover, all the results in this note are best possible in some sense.

The Star-Formation Main Sequence: The Dependence of Specific Star Formation Rate and Its Dispersion on Galaxy Stellar Mass

The dispersion of the star-formation main sequence (SFMS) reflects the diversity of star formation histories and variation in star formation rates (SFRs) in star-forming galaxies (SFGs) with similar stellar masses ($M^\ast$). We examine the dispersion of local SFMS using a complete sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxies at 0.01$ $8.8. The SFRs are estimated from H$α$ in combination with 22$μm$ observation from WISE. The catalog of bulge+disk decomposition from Simard et al. (2011) is available for the sample galaxies. We measure the dispersion of specific SFR (SSFR) as a function of $M^*$. We confirm that the dispersion increases with $M^*$ from 0.37$\pm0.01$dex at $\log(M^\ast/M_\odot)<$9.6 to 0.51$\pm0.02$dex at $\log(M^\ast/M_\odot)>$10.2. Despite star formation is mostly associated with disks, the dispersion of disk SSFR still increases with $M^*$. We conclude that the presence of bulges/bars is likely responsible for the large dispersion of SSFR in massive SFGs while low-mass SFGs are mostly disk-dominated and thus with small dispersion. Our results suggest that star formation on galactic scales is dramatically affected by central dense structures through both enhancing and/or quenching processes; while lower-mass SFGs tend to have less bursty star formation histories. However, the dispersion of SSFR becomes significantly smaller and remains constant when only disk-dominated SFGs are counted. This finding implies that the impact of stochastic stellar feedback on star formation is likely to follow the same pattern in all disk galaxies, showing no correlation with halo potential.

On Joint Estimation of Gaussian Graphical Models for Spatial and Temporal Data

In this paper, we first propose a Bayesian neighborhood selection method to estimate Gaussian Graphical Models (GGMs). We show the graph selection consistency of this method in the sense that the posterior probability of the true model converges to one. When there are multiple groups of data available, instead of estimating the networks independently for each group, joint estimation of the networks may utilize the shared information among groups and lead to improved estimation for each individual network. Our method is extended to jointly estimate GGMs in multiple groups of data with complex structures, including spatial data, temporal data and data with both spatial and temporal structures. Markov random field (MRF) models are used to efficiently incorporate the complex data structures. We develop and implement an efficient algorithm for statistical inference that enables parallel computing. Simulation studies suggest that our approach achieves better accuracy in network estimation compared with methods not incorporating spatial and temporal dependencies when there are shared structures among the networks, and that it performs comparably well otherwise. Finally, we illustrate our method using the human brain gene expression microarray dataset, where the expression levels of genes are measured in different brain regions across multiple time periods.

Asymptotic stability of wave patterns to compressible viscous and heat-conducting gases in the half space

We study the large-time behavior of solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for a viscous and heat-conducting ideal polytropic gas in the one-dimensional half-space. A rarefaction wave and its superposition with a non-degenerate stationary solution are shown to be asymptotically stable for the outflow problem with large initial perturbation and general adiabatic exponent.

Long-Term Stability Analysis of Power Systems with Wind Power Based on Stochastic Differential Equations: Model Development and Foundations

In this paper, the variable wind power is incorporated into the dynamic model for long-term stability analysis. A theory-based method is proposed for power systems with wind power to conduct long-term stability analysis, which is able to provide accurate stability assessments with fast simulation speed. Particularly, the theoretical foundation for the proposed approximation approach is presented. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are illustrated by several numerical examples.

Synchronous Characterization of Semiconductor Microcavity Laser Beam

We report on a high-resolution double-channel imaging method used to synchronously map the intensity- and optical-frequency-distribution of a laser beam in the plane orthogonal to the propagation direction. The synchronous measurement allows us to show that the laser frequency is an inhomogeneous distribution below threshold, but that it becomes homogeneous across the fundamental Gaussian mode above threshold. The beam's tails deviations from the Gaussian shape, however, are accompanied by sizeable fluctuations in the laser wavelength, possibly deriving from manufacturing details and from the influence of spontaneous emission in the very low intensity wings. In addition to the synchronous spatial characterization, a temporal analysis at any given point in the beam cross-section is carried out. Using this method, the beam homogeneity and spatial shape, energy density, energy center and the defects-related spectrum can also be extracted from these high-resolution pictures.

GOODS-HERSCHEL: star formation, dust attenuation and the FIR-radio correlation on the Main Sequence of star-forming galaxies up to z~4

We use deep panchromatic datasets in the GOODS-N field, from GALEX to the deepest Herschel far-infrared and VLA radio continuum imaging, to explore, using mass-complete samples, the evolution of the star formation activity and dust attenuation of star-forming galaxies to z~4. Our main results can be summarized as follows: i) the slope of the SFR-M correlation is consistent with being constant, and equal to ~0.8 at least up to z~1.5, while its normalization keeps increasing with redshift; ii) for the first time here we are able to explore the FIR-radio correlation for a mass-selected sample of star-forming galaxies: the correlation does not evolve up to z~4; iii) we confirm that galaxy stellar mass is a robust proxy for UV dust attenuation in star-forming galaxies, with more massive galaxies being more dust attenuated, strikingly we find that this attenuation relation evolves very weakly with redshift, the amount of dust attenuation increasing by less than 0.3 magnitudes over the redshift range [0.5-4] for a fixed stellar mass, as opposed to a tenfold increase of star formation rate; iv) the correlation between dust attenuation and the UV spectral slope evolves in redshift, with the median UV spectral slope of star-forming galaxies becoming bluer with redshift. By z~3, typical UV slopes are inconsistent, given the measured dust attenuation, with the predictions of commonly used empirical laws. Finally, building on existing results, we show that gas reddening is marginally larger (by a factor of around 1.3) than stellar reddening at all redshifts probed, and also that the amount of dust attenuation at a fixed ISM metallicity increases with redshift. We speculate that our results support evolving ISM conditions of typical star-forming galaxies such that at z~1.5 Main Sequence galaxies have ISM conditions getting closer to those of local starbursts.

Tunable anisotropic superfluidity in an optical kagome superlattice

We study the phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model on the kagome lattice with a broken sublattice symmetry. Such a superlattice structure can naturally be created and tuned by changing the potential offset of one sublattice in the optical generation of the frustrated lattice. The superstructure gives rise to a rich quantum phase diagram, which is analyzed by combining Quantum Monte Carlo simulations with the Generalized Effective Potential Landau Theory. Mott phases with non-integer filling and a characteristic order along stripes are found, which show a transition to a superfluid phase with an anisotropic superfluid density. Surprisingly, the direction of the superfluid anisotropy is changing between different symmetry directions as a function of the particle number or the hopping strength. Finally, we discuss characteristic signatures of anisotropic phases in time-of-flight absorption measurements.

Full Large-Scale Diversity Space Codes for MIMO Optical Wireless Communications

In this paper, we consider a multiple-input-multiple-output optical wireless communication (MIMO-OWC) system suffering from log-normal fading. In this scenario, a general criterion for the design of full large-scale diversity space code (FLDSC) with the maximum likelihood (ML) detector is developed. Based on our criterion, FLDSC is attained if and only if all the entries of the space coding matrix are positive. Particularly for $2\times 2$ MIMO-OWC with unipolar pulse amplitude modulation (PAM), a closed-form linear FLDSC satisfying this criterion is attained by smartly taking advantage of some available properties as well as by developing some new interesting properties on Farey sequences in number theory to rigorously attack the continuous and discrete variables mixed max-min problem. In fact, this specific design not only proves that a repetition code (RC) is the best linear FLDSC, but also uncovers a significant difference between MIMO radio frequency (RF) communications and MIMO-OWC that space-only transmission is sufficient for a full diversity achievement. Computer simulations demonstrate that FLDSC substantially outperforms spatial multiplexing with the same total optical power and spectral efficiency and the latter obtains only the small-scale diversity gain.

An Empirical Evaluation of Deep Learning on Highway Driving

Numerous groups have applied a variety of deep learning techniques to computer vision problems in highway perception scenarios. In this paper, we presented a number of empirical evaluations of recent deep learning advances. Computer vision, combined with deep learning, has the potential to bring about a relatively inexpensive, robust solution to autonomous driving. To prepare deep learning for industry uptake and practical applications, neural networks will require large data sets that represent all possible driving environments and scenarios. We collect a large data set of highway data and apply deep learning and computer vision algorithms to problems such as car and lane detection. We show how existing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can be used to perform lane and vehicle detection while running at frame rates required for a real-time system. Our results lend credence to the hypothesis that deep learning holds promise for autonomous driving.

Variable selection and estimation for semi-parametric multiple-index models

In this paper, we propose a novel method to select significant variables and estimate the corresponding coefficients in multiple-index models with a group structure. All existing approaches for single-index models cannot be extended directly to handle this issue with several indices. This method integrates a popularly used shrinkage penalty such as LASSO with the group-wise minimum average variance estimation. It is capable of simultaneous dimension reduction and variable selection, while incorporating the group structure in predictors. Interestingly, the proposed estimator with the LASSO penalty then behaves like an estimator with an adaptive LASSO penalty. The estimator achieves consistency of variable selection without sacrificing the root-$n$ consistency of basis estimation. Simulation studies and a real-data example illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the new method.

Stability of stationary solutions to the outflow problem for full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with large initial perturbation

We investigate the large-time behavior of solutions to an outflow problem of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the half line. The non-degenerate stationary solution is shown to be asymptotically stable under large initial perturbation with no restriction on the adiabatic exponent $γ$, provided that the boundary strength is sufficiently small. The proofs are based on the standard energy method and the crucial step is to obtain positive lower and upper bounds of the density and the temperature uniformly in time and space.

The Herschel view of the dominant mode of galaxy growth from z=4 to the present day

We present an analysis of the deepest Herschel images in four major extragalactic fields GOODS-North, GOODS-South, UDS and COSMOS obtained within the GOODS-Herschel and CANDELS-Herschel key programs. The picture provided by 10497 individual far-infrared detections is supplemented by the stacking analysis of a mass-complete sample of 62361 star-forming galaxies from the CANDELS-HST H band-selected catalogs and from two deep ground-based Ks band-selected catalogs in the GOODS-North and the COSMOS-wide fields, in order to obtain one of the most accurate and unbiased understanding to date of the stellar mass growth over the cosmic history. We show, for the first time, that stacking also provides a powerful tool to determine the dispersion of a physical correlation and describe our method called "scatter stacking" that may be easily generalized to other experiments. We demonstrate that galaxies of all masses from z=4 to 0 follow a universal scaling law, the so-called main sequence of star-forming galaxies. We find a universal close-to-linear slope of the logSFR-logM* relation with evidence for a flattening of the main sequence at high masses (log(M*/Msun) > 10.5) that becomes less prominent with increasing redshift and almost vanishes by z~2. This flattening may be due to the parallel stellar growth of quiescent bulges in star-forming galaxies. Within the main sequence, we measure a non varying SFR dispersion of 0.3 dex. The specific SFR (sSFR=SFR/M*) of star-forming galaxies is found to continuously increase from z=0 to 4. Finally we discuss the implications of our findings on the cosmic SFR history and show that more than 2/3 of present-day stars must have formed in a regime dominated by the main sequence mode. As a consequence we conclude that, although omnipresent in the distant Universe, galaxy mergers had little impact in shaping the global star formation history over the last 12.5 Gyr.

On Heterogeneous Neighbor Discovery in Wireless Sensor Networks

Neighbor discovery plays a crucial role in the formation of wireless sensor networks and mobile networks where the power of sensors (or mobile devices) is constrained. Due to the difficulty of clock synchronization, many asynchronous protocols based on wake-up scheduling have been developed over the years in order to enable timely neighbor discovery between neighboring sensors while saving energy. However, existing protocols are not fine-grained enough to support all heterogeneous battery duty cycles, which can lead to a more rapid deterioration of long-term battery health for those without support. Existing research can be broadly divided into two categories according to their neighbor-discovery techniques---the quorum based protocols and the co-primality based protocols. In this paper, we propose two neighbor discovery protocols, called Hedis and Todis, that optimize the duty cycle granularity of quorum and co-primality based protocols respectively, by enabling the finest-grained control of heterogeneous duty cycles. We compare the two optimal protocols via analytical and simulation results, which show that although the optimal co-primality based protocol (Todis) is simpler in its design, the optimal quorum based protocol (Hedis) has a better performance since it has a lower relative error rate and smaller discovery delay, while still allowing the sensor nodes to wake up at a more infrequent rate.

Entanglement entropy, fidelity and the phase transition of one-dimensional hard-core bosonic system with three-body interactions

We study the one-dimensional hard-core Bose-Hubbard model with three-body interactions. In previous work[1], the two-thirds filling solid with both bond-wave order (BOW) and charge-density wave order (CDW) is found and it undergoes a second order phase transition to the superfluid phase. However, in recent work[2], we found the BOW not independent with CDW order. Thus, by utilizing the density matrix renormalization group, we make use of both entanglement entropy and fidelity susceptibility to detect the phase transition. In two-thirds filling, the extreme point of the entanglement entropy also indicates the superfluid phase transition point. However, the pairwise entanglement entropy drop quickly after additional critical point, such disentangled behaviour demonstrates another melting point to the CDW phase. Thus, a novel intermediate phase between CDW phase and superfluid phase is found. At last, we analyzed the half filling case with entanglement entropy.

Voting for Deceptive Opinion Spam Detection

Consumers' purchase decisions are increasingly influenced by user-generated online reviews. Accordingly, there has been growing concern about the potential for posting deceptive opinion spam fictitious reviews that have been deliberately written to sound authentic, to deceive the readers. Existing approaches mainly focus on developing automatic supervised learning based methods to help users identify deceptive opinion spams. This work, we used the LSI and Sprinkled LSI technique to reduce the dimension for deception detection. We make our contribution to demonstrate what LSI is capturing in latent semantic space and reveal how deceptive opinions can be recognized automatically from truthful opinions. Finally, we proposed a voting scheme which integrates different approaches to further improve the classification performance.
