Diffuse PeV neutrino emission from Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies

Ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are the most luminous and intense starburst galaxies in the Universe. Both their star-formation rate (SFR) and gas surface mass density are very high, implying a high supernovae rate and an efficient energy conversion of energetic protons. A small fraction of these supernovae is the so-called hypernovae with a typical kinetic energy ~1e52 erg and a shock velocity >=1e9 cm/s. The strong shocks driven by hypernovae are able to accelerate cosmic ray protons up to 1e17 eV. These energetic protons lose a good fraction of their energy through proton-proton collision when ejected into very dense interstellar medium, and as a result, produce high energy neutrinos (<=5 PeV). Recent deep infrared surveys provide solid constraints on the number density of ULIRGs across a wide redshift range 0<z<2.3, allowing us to derive the flux of diffuse neutrinos from hypernovae. We find that at PeV energies, the diffuse neutrinos contributed by ULIRGs are comparable with the atmosphere neutrinos with the flux of 2e-9GeV cm^-2/s/sr, by assuming the injected cosmic ray power law spectrum with an index of -2.

Weighted Sum Rate Maximization for Downlink OFDMA with Subcarrier-pair based Opportunistic DF Relaying

This paper addresses a weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization problem for downlink OFDMA aided by a decode-and-forward (DF) relay under a total power constraint. A novel subcarrier-pair based opportunistic DF relaying protocol is proposed. Specifically, user message bits are transmitted in two time slots. A subcarrier in the first slot can be paired with a subcarrier in the second slot for the DF relay-aided transmission to a user. In particular, the source and the relay can transmit simultaneously to implement beamforming at the subcarrier in the second slot. Each unpaired subcarrier in either the first or second slot is used for the source's direct transmission to a user. A benchmark protocol, same as the proposed one except that the transmit beamforming is not used for the relay-aided transmission, is also considered. For each protocol, a polynomial-complexity algorithm is developed to find at least an approximately optimum resource allocation (RA), by using continuous relaxation, the dual method, and Hungarian algorithm. Instrumental to the algorithm design is an elegant definition of optimization variables, motivated by the idea of regarding the unpaired subcarriers as virtual subcarrier pairs in the direct transmission mode. The effectiveness of the RA algorithm and the impact of relay position and total power on the protocols' performance are illustrated by numerical experiments. The proposed protocol always leads to a maximum WSR equal to or greater than that for the benchmark one, and the performance gain of using the proposed one is significant especially when the relay is in close proximity to the source and the total power is low. Theoretical analysis is presented to interpret these observations.

Power minimization for OFDM Transmission with Subcarrier-pair based Opportunistic DF Relaying

This paper develops a sum-power minimized resource allocation (RA) algorithm subject to a sum-rate constraint for cooperative orthogonal frequency division modulation (OFDM) transmission with subcarrier-pair based opportunistic decode-and-forward (DF) relaying. The improved DF protocol first proposed in [1] is used with optimized subcarrier pairing. Instrumental to the RA algorithm design is appropriate definition of variables to represent source/relay power allocation, subcarrier pairing and transmission-mode selection elegantly, so that after continuous relaxation, the dual method and the Hungarian algorithm can be used to find an (at least approximately) optimum RA with polynomial complexity. Moreover, the bisection method is used to speed up the search of the optimum Lagrange multiplier for the dual method. Numerical results are shown to illustrate the power-reduction benefit of the improved DF protocol with optimized subcarrier pairing.

Novel Subcarrier-pair based Opportunistic DF Protocol for Cooperative Downlink OFDMA

A novel subcarrier-pair based opportunistic DF protocol is proposed for cooperative downlink OFDMA transmission aided by a decode-and-forward (DF) relay. Specifically, user message bits are transmitted in two consecutive equal-duration time slots. A subcarrier in the first slot can be paired with a subcarrier in the second slot for the DF relay-aided transmission to a user. In particular, the source and the relay can transmit simultaneously to implement beamforming at the subcarrier in the second slot for the relay-aided transmission. Each unpaired subcarrier in either the first or second slot is used by the source for direct transmission to a user without the relay's assistance. The sum rate maximized resource allocation (RA) problem is addressed for this protocol under a total power constraint. It is shown that the novel protocol leads to a maximum sum rate greater than or equal to that for a benchmark one, which does not allow the source to implement beamforming at the subcarrier in the second slot for the relay-aided transmission. Then, a polynomial-complexity RA algorithm is developed to find an (at least approximately) optimum resource allocation (i.e., source/relay power, subcarrier pairing and assignment to users) for either the proposed or benchmark protocol. Numerical experiments illustrate that the novel protocol can lead to a much greater sum rate than the benchmark one.

On Murty-Simon Conjecture II

A graph is diameter two edge-critical if its diameter is two and the deletion of any edge increases the diameter. Murty and Simon conjectured that the number of edges in a diameter two edge-critical graph on $n$ vertices is at most $\lfloor \frac{n^{2}}{4} \rfloor$ and the extremal graph is the complete bipartite graph $K_{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor, \lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil}$. In the series papers [7-9], the Murty-Simon Conjecture stated by Haynes et al. is not the original conjecture, indeed, it is only for the diameter two edge-critical graphs of even order. In this paper, we completely prove the Murty-Simon Conjecture for the graphs whose complements have vertex connectivity $\ell$, where $\ell = 1, 2, 3$; and for the graphs whose complements have an independent vertex cut of cardinality at least three.

On the SCALE Algorithm for Multiuser Multicarrier Power Spectrum Management

This paper studies the successive convex approximation for low complexity (SCALE) algorithm, which was proposed to address the weighted sum rate (WSR) maximized dynamic power spectrum management (DSM) problem for multiuser multicarrier systems. To this end, we first revisit the algorithm, and then present geometric interpretation and properties of the algorithm. A geometric programming (GP) implementation approach is proposed and compared with the low-complexity approach proposed previously. In particular, an analytical method is proposed to set up the default lower-bound constraints added by a GP solver. Finally, numerical experiments are used to illustrate the analysis and compare the two implementation approaches.

CANDELS: Correlations of SEDs and Morphologies with Star-formation Status for Massive Galaxies at z ~ 2

We present a study on Spectral Energy Distributions, Morphologies, and star formation for an IRAC-selected extremely red object sample in the GOODS Chandra Deep Field-South. This work was enabled by new HST/WFC3 near-IR imaging from the CANDELS survey as well as the deepest available X-ray data from Chandra 4 Ms observations. This sample consists of 133 objects with the 3.6um limiting magnitude of [3.6] = 21.5, and is approximately complete for galaxies with M >10^{11}M_sun at 1.5 < z < 2.5. We classify this sample into two types, quiescent and star-forming galaxies, in the observed infrared color-color ([3.6]-[24] vs K-[3.6]) diagram. The further morphological study of this sample show a consistent result with the observed color classification. The classified quiescent galaxies are bulge dominated and star-forming galaxies in the sample have disk or irregular morphologies. Our observed infrared color classification is also consistent with the rest-frame color (U-V vs V-J) classification. We also found that quiescent and star-forming galaxies are well separated in the nonparametric morphology parameter (Gini vs M_{20}) diagram measuring their concentration and clumpiness: quiescent galaxies have Gini coefficient higher than 0.58 and star forming galaxies have Gini coefficient lower that 0.58. We argue that the star formation quenching process must lead to or be accompanied by the increasing galaxy concentration. One prominent morphological feature of this sample is that disks are commonly seen in this massive galaxy sample at 1.5 < z < 2.5: 30% of quiescent galaxies and 70% of star forming galaxies with M >10^{11}M_sun have disks in their rest-frame optical morphologies. The prevalence of these extended, relatively undisturbed disks challenges the merging scenario as the main mode of massive galaxy formation.

Dynamics of center-periphery patterns in knowledge networks - the case of China's biotech science and technology system

Science and technology systems - and their epistemic communities - are usually hierarchical and composed of a number of strong, large, leading organizations, along with a number of smaller and less influential ones. Moreover, these hierarchical patterns have a spatial structure: the leading organizations are concentrated in a few places, creating a science and technology center, whereas the majority of locations are peripheral. In the example of biotech research in China, we found dynamic changes in center-periphery patterns. These results are based on a network analysis of evolving co-authorship networks from 2001 to 2009 that were built combining national and international databases. Therefore, our results are not only relevant for evaluating the spatial structure and dynamics in the Chinese biotech system and its integration into the global knowledge network, but also revive a discussion on persistence and processes of change in the systems theory for sciencebased industries.

On the Nature of the Progenitor of the Type Ia SN2011fe in M101

The explosion of a Type Ia supernova, SN 2011ef, in the nearby Pinwheel galaxy (M101 at 6.4 Mpc) provides an opportunity to study pre-explosion images and search for the progenitor, which should consist of a white dwarf (WD), possibly surrounded by an accretion disk, in orbit with another star. We report on our use of deep Chandra observations to limit the luminosity and temperature of the pre-explosion white dwarf (WD). It is found that if the spectrum was a blackbody, then WDs of highest possible temperatures and luminosities are excluded but, even if the WD was emitting at the Eddington luminosity, values of kT less than roughly 60 eV are permitted. This allows the progenitor to be an accreting nuclear-burning WD with an expanded photosphere. Pre-SN HST observations were used to derive a lower limit of about 10 eV for the expanded photosphere. Li et al.\, (2011) have already ruled out the possibility of a giant donor. We consider the combined emission from the WD, disk, and donor, and find that even the combined emission from a bright subgiant, WD and disk would not likely have been observed prior to explosion, and neither would some local candidates for the nuclear-burning WD model.

High resolution cathodoluminescence hyperspectral imaging of surface features in InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well structures

InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) have been studied by using cathodoluminescence hyperspectral imaging with high spatial resolution. Variations in peak emission energies and intensities across trench-like features and V-pits on the surface of the MQWs are investigated. The MQW emission from the region inside trench-like features is red-shifted by approximately 45 meV and more intense than the surrounding planar regions of the sample, whereas emission from the V-pits is blue-shifted by about 20 meV and relatively weaker. By employing this technique to the studied nanostructures it is possible to investigate energy and intensity shifts on a 10 nm length scale.

Oxford SWIFT IFS and multi-wavelength observations of the Eagle galaxy at z=0.77

The `Eagle' galaxy at a redshift of 0.77 is studied with the Oxford Short Wavelength Integral Field Spectrograph (SWIFT) and multi-wavelength data from the All-wavelength Extended Groth strip International Survey (AEGIS). It was chosen from AEGIS because of the bright and extended emission in its slit spectrum. Three dimensional kinematic maps of the Eagle reveal a gradient in velocity dispersion which spans 35-75 +/- 10 km/s and a rotation velocity of 25 +/- 5 km/s uncorrected for inclination. Hubble Space Telescope images suggest it is close to face-on. In comparison with galaxies from AEGIS at similar redshifts, the Eagle is extremely bright and blue in the rest-frame optical, highly star-forming, dominated by unobscured star-formation, and has a low metallicity for its size. This is consistent with its selection. The Eagle is likely undergoing a major merger and is caught in the early stage of a star-burst when it has not yet experienced metal enrichment or formed the mass of dust typically found in star-forming galaxies.

WSR Maximized Resource Allocation in Multiple DF Relays Aided OFDMA Downlink Transmission

This paper considers the weighted sum rate (WSR) maximized resource allocation (RA) constrained by a system sum power in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) downlink transmission system assisted by multiple decode-and-forward (DF) relays. In particular, multiple relays may cooperate with the source for every relay-aided transmission. A two-step algorithm is proposed to find the globally optimum RA. In the first step, the optimum source/relay power and assisting relays that maximize the rate is found for every combination of subcarrier and destination, assuming a sum power is allocated to the transmission at that subcarrier to that destination in the relay-aided transmission mode and the direct mode, respectively. In the second step, a convex-optimization based algorithm is designed to find the globally optimum assignment of destination, transmission mode, and sum power for each subcarrier to maximize the WSR. Combining the RAs found in the two steps, the globally optimum RA can be found. In addition, we show that the optimum RA in the second step can readily be derived when the system sum power is very high. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is illustrated by numerical experiments.

Sum Rate Maximized Resource Allocation in Multiple DF Relays Aided OFDM Transmission

In relay-aided wireless transmission systems, one of the key issues is how to decide assisting relays and manage the energy resource at the source and each individual relay, to maximize a certain objective related to system performance. This paper addresses the sum rate maximized resource allocation (RA) problem in a point to point orthogonal frequency division modulation (OFDM) transmission system assisted by multiple decode-and-forward (DF) relays, subject to the individual sum power constraints of the source and the relays. In particular, the transmission at each subcarrier can be in either the direct mode without any relay assisting, or the relay-aided mode with one or several relays assisting. We propose two RA algorithms which optimize the assignment of transmission mode and source power for every subcarrier, as well as the assisting relays and the power allocation to them for every {relay-aided} subcarrier. First, it is shown that the considered RA problem has zero Lagrangian duality gap when there is a big number of subcarriers. In this case, a duality based algorithm that finds a globally optimum RA is developed. Second, a coordinate-ascent based iterative algorithm, which finds a suboptimum RA but is always applicable regardless of the duality gap of the RA problem, is developed. The effectiveness of these algorithms has been illustrated by numerical experiments.

Cramér-Rao Bound for Localization with A Priori Knowledge on Biased Range Measurements

This paper derives a general expression for the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) of wireless localization algorithms using range measurements subject to bias corruption. Specifically, the a priori knowledge about which range measurements are biased, and the probability density functions (PDF) of the biases are assumed to be available. For each range measurement, the error due to estimating the time-of-arrival of the detected signal is modeled as a Gaussian distributed random variable with zero mean and known variance. In general, the derived CRB expression can be evaluated numerically. An approximate CRB expression is also derived when the bias PDF is very informative. Using these CRB expressions, we study the impact of the bias distribution on the mean square error (MSE) bound corresponding to the CRB. The analysis is corroborated by numerical experiments.

Equivalence between Extendibility and Factor-Criticality

In this paper, we show that if $k\geq (ν+2)/4$, where $ν$ denotes the order of a graph, a non-bipartite graph $G$ is $k$-extendable if and only if it is $2k$-factor-critical. If $k\geq (ν-3)/4$, a graph $G$ is $k\ 1/2$-extendable if and only if it is $(2k+1)$-factor-critical. We also give examples to show that the two bounds are best possible. Our results are answers to a problem posted by Favaron [3] and Yu [11].

Every planar graph without adjacent short cycles is 3-colorable

Two cycles are {\em adjacent} if they have an edge in common. Suppose that $G$ is a planar graph, for any two adjacent cycles $C_{1}$ and $C_{2}$, we have $|C_{1}| + |C_{2}| \geq 11$, in particular, when $|C_{1}| = 5$, $|C_{2}| \geq 7$. We show that the graph $G$ is 3-colorable.

Matching and Factor-Critical Property in 3-Dominating-Critical Graphs

Let $γ(G)$ be the domination number of a graph $G$. A graph $G$ is \emph{domination-vertex-critical}, or \emph{$γ$-vertex-critical}, if $γ(G-v)< γ(G)$ for every vertex $v \in V(G)$. In this paper, we show that: Let $G$ be a $γ$-vertex-critical graph and $γ(G)=3$. (1) If $G$ is of even order and $K_{1,6}$-free, then $G$ has a perfect matching; (2) If $G$ is of odd order and $K_{1,7}$-free, then $G$ has a near perfect matching with only three exceptions. All these results improve the known results.
