First Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing Measurement of Satellite Halo Mass in the CFHT Stripe-82 Survey

We select satellite galaxies from the galaxy group catalog constructed with the SDSS spectroscopic galaxies and measure the tangential shear around these galaxies with source catalog extracted from CFHT/MegaCam Stripe-82 Survey to constrain the mass of subhalos associated with them. The lensing signal is measured around satellites in groups with masses in the range [10^{13}, 5x10^{14}]h^{-1}M_{sun}, and is found to agree well with theoretical expectation. Fitting the data with a truncated NFW profile, we obtain an average subhalo mass of log M_{sub}= 11.68 \pm 0.67 for satellites whose projected distances to central galaxies are in the range [0.1, 0.3] h^{-1}Mpc, and log M_{sub}= 11.68 \pm 0.76 for satellites with projected halo-centric distance in [0.3, 0.5] h^{-1}Mpc. The best-fit subhalo masses are comparable to the truncated subhalo masses assigned to satellite galaxies using abundance matching and about 5 to 10 times higher than the average stellar mass of the lensing satellite galaxies.

Stability of charged black holes in string theory under charged massive scalar perturbations

Similar to the superradiant effect in Reissner-Nordström black hole, a charged scalar field can be amplified when impinging on the charged black hole in string theory. According to the black-hole bomb mechanism, the mass term of the incident field can works as the reflecting mirror, which may trigger the instability of black hole. We study the possible instability triggered by superradiant effect and demonstrate that the charged black hole in string theory is stable against the massive charged scalar perturbation. The reason is that there is no trapping potential well in the black hole exterior which is separated from the horizon by a potential barrier and there is no bound states in the superradiant regime.

Assembly Bias of Dwarf-sized Dark Matter Haloes

Previous studies indicate that assembly bias effects are stronger for lower mass dark matter haloes. Here we make use of high resolution re-simulations of rich clusters and their surroundings from the Phoenix Project and a large volume cosmological simulation, the Millennium-II run, to quantify assembly bias effects on dwarf-sized dark matter haloes. We find that, in the regions around massive clusters, dwarf-sized haloes ($[10^9,10^{11}]\ms$) form earlier ($Δz \sim 2$ in redshift) and possess larger $V_{\rm max}$ ($\sim20%$) than the field galaxies. We find that this environmental dependence is largely caused by tidal interactions between the ejected haloes and their former hosts, while other large scale effects are less important. Finally we assess the effects of assembly bias on dwarf galaxy formation with a sophisticated semi-analytical galaxy formation model. We find that the dwarf galaxies near massive clusters tend to be redder ($Δ(u-r) = 0.5$) and have three times as much stellar mass compared to the field galaxies with the same halo mass. These features should be seen with observational data.

Generation of Diffraction-Free Optical Beams Using Wrinkled Membranes

We report the first demonstration of wrinkled membranes as a kind of optical focusing devices, which are low cost, light weight and flexible. Our device consists of concentric wrinkle rings on a gold-PDMS bilayer membrane, which converts collimated illuminations to diffraction-free focused beams. Beam diameters of 300-400 μm have been observed in the visible range. By comparing the theoretically calculated and experimentally measured focal spot profiles, we predict a focal spot size as small as around 50 μm if fabrication eccentricity can be eliminated.

Constraining the substructure of dark matter haloes with galaxy-galaxy lensing

With galaxy groups constructed from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we analyze the expected galaxy-galaxy lensing signals around satellite galaxies residing in different host haloes and located at different halo-centric distances. We use Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to explore the potential constraints on the mass and density profile of subhaloes associated with satellite galaxies from SDSS-like surveys and surveys similar to the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). Our results show that for SDSS-like surveys, we can only set a loose constraint on the mean mass of subhaloes. With LSST-like surveys, however, both the mean mass and the density profile of subhaloes can be well constrained.

Analytical study of superradiant instability for five-dimensional Kerr-Gödel black hole

We present an analytical study of superradiant instability of rotating asymptotically Gödel black hole (Kerr-Gödel black hole) in five-dimensional minimal supergravity theory. By employing the matched asymptotic expansion method to solve Klein-Gordon equation of scalar field perturbation, we show that the complex parts of quasinormal frequencies are positive in the regime of superradiance. This implies the growing instability of superradiant modes. The reason for this kind of instability is the Dirichlet boundary condition at asymptotic infinity, which is similar to that of rotating black holes in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime.

Superradiant instability of charged massive scalar field in Kerr-Newman-anti-de Sitter black hole

We study the superradiance instability of charged massive scalar field in the background of Kerr-Newman-anti-de Sitter black hole. By employing the asymptotic matching technique to solve Klein-Gordon equation analytically, the complex parts of quasinormal frequencies are shown to be positive in the regime of superradiance. Because the calculation is performed in the approximation of small black hole, the result indicates that small Kerr-Newman-anti-de Sitter black hole is unstable against the massive scalar field perturbation with small charge.

Analytical studies of Hawking radiation and quasinormal modes in rotating linear dilatonic black hole

The rotating linear dilatonic black hole is an asymptotically non-flat solution to Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion gravity theory due to the existence of non-trivial matter fields. We have analytically studied the wave equation of scalar field in this background and shown that the radial wave equation can be solved in terms of hypergeometric function. By determining the ingoing and the outgoing fluxes at the asymptotic infinity, we have found the analytical expressions for reflection coefficient and greybody factor for certain scalar modes. In the high frequency regime, we obtain the Hawking temperature by comparing the blackbody spectrum with the radiation spectrum resulting from reflection coefficient. It is shown that the Hawking temperature, which depends only on the linear dilatonic background parameter, does not agree with the temperature calculated from surface gravity. At last, the quasinormal modes of scalar field perturbation are presented, which shows that the rotating linear dilationic black hole is unstable for certain modes apart from the superradiant modes.

Holographic description of three dimensional Godel black hole

Three dimensional Gödel black hole is a solution to Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with a negative cosmological constant. We have studied the hidden conformal symmetry for massive scalar field without any additional condition in the background of three dimensional non-extremal and extremal Gödel black holes. This conformal symmetry is uncovered by the observation that the radial wave equations in both cases can all be rewritten in the form of $SL(2, R)$ Casimir operators through introducing two sets of conformal coordinates to write the $SL(2, R)$ generators. At last, we give the holographic dual descriptions of Bekenstein-Hawking entropies of non-extremal and extremal black holes from Cardy formula of conformal field theory.

Quasinormal modes and entropy spectrum of three dimensional Godel black hole

We have studied perturbations of scalar and spinor field in the background of three dimensional Gödel black hole. The wave equations are shown to be exactly solvable in terms of hypergeometric functions. The quasinormal modes are analytically calculated by imposing the Dirichlet boundary condition at spatial infinity, which are shown to be of the same form in both cases. By considering the physical interpretation of quasinormal modes, we obtain the consistent transition frequencies from the quasinormal modes of scalar and spinor field. As an application of quasinormal modes, we have also investigated the area and entropy quantization of three dimensional Gödel black hole. By choosing the conserved mass of Gödel black hole properly, the entropy spectrum are shown to be equally-spaced.

Robust high-fidelity universal set of quantum gates through non-adiabatic rapid passage

We show how a robust high-fidelity universal set of quantum gates can be implemented using a single form of non-adiabatic rapid passage whose parameters are optimized to maximize gate fidelity and reward gate robustness. Each gate in the universal set is found to operate with a fidelity F in the range 0.99988 < F < 0.99999, and to require control parameters with no more than 14-bit (1 part in 10,000) precision. Such precision is within reach of commercially available arbitrary waveform generators, so that an experimental study of this approach to high-fidelity universal quantum control appears feasible.

Probing Hot Gas in Galaxy Groups through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect

We investigate the potential of exploiting the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE) to study the properties of hot gas in galaxy groups. It is shown that, with upcoming SZE surveys, one can stack SZE maps around galaxy groups of similar halo masses selected from large galaxy redshift surveys to study the hot gas in halos represented by galaxy groups. We use various models for the hot halo gas to study how the expected SZE signals are affected by gas fraction, equation of state, halo concentration, and cosmology. Comparing the model predictions with the sensitivities expected from the SPT, ACT and Planck surveys shows that a SPT-like survey can provide stringent constraints on the hot gas properties for halos with masses M ~> 10^{13} h^{-1}Msun. We also explore the idea of using the cross correlation between hot gas and galaxies of different luminosity to probe the hot gas in dark matter halos without identifying galaxy groups to represent dark halos. Our results show that, with a galaxy survey as large as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and with the help of the conditional luminosity function (CLF) model, one can obtain stringent constraints on the hot gas properties in halos with masses down to 10^{13} h^{-1}Msun. Thus, the upcoming SZE surveys should provide a very promising avenue to probe the hot gas in relatively low-mass halos where the majority of L*-galaxies reside.

Hidden Conformal Symmetry of Self-Dual Warped AdS_3 Black Holes in Topological Massive Gravity

We extend the recently proposal of hidden conformal symmetry to the self-dual warped AdS$_3$ black holes in topological massive gravity. It is shown that the wave equation of massive scalar field with sufficient small angular momentum can be reproduced by the SL(2, R) Casimir quadratic operator. Due to the periodic identification in the $ϕ$ direction, it is found that only the left section of hidden conformal symmetry is broken to U(1), while the right section is unbroken, which only gives the left temperature of dual CFT. As a check of the dual CFT conjecture of self-warped AdS$_3$ black hole, we further compute the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and absorption cross section and quasinormal modes of scalar field perturbation and show these are just of the forms predicted by the dual CFT.

Quasinormal Modes of Self-Dual Warped AdS$_3$ Black Hole in Topological Massive Gravity

We consider the various perturbations of self-dual warped AdS$_3$ black hole and obtain the exact expressions of quasinormal modes by imposing the vanishing Dirichlet boundary condition at asymptotic infinity. It is expected that the quasinormal modes agree with the poles of retarded Green's functions of the dual CFT. Our results provide a quantitative test of the warped AdS/CFT correspondence.

High-fidelity universal quantum gates through group-symmetrized rapid passage

Twisted rapid passage is a type of non-adiabatic rapid passage that generates controllable quantum interference effects that were first observed experimentally in 2003. It is shown that twisted rapid passage sweeps can be used to implement a universal set of quantum gates that operate with high-fidelity. The gate set consists of the Hadamard and NOT gates, together with variants of the phase, pi/8, and controlled-phase gates. For each gate g in the universal set, sweep parameter values are provided which numerical simulations indicate will produce a unitary operation that approximates g with error probability less than 10**(-4). Note that all gates in the universal set are implemented using a single family of control-field, and the error probability for each gate falls below the rough-and-ready estimate for the accuracy threshold of 10**(-4).

Entropy of Kaluza-Klein Black Hole from Kerr/CFT Correspondence

We extend the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence to examine the dual conformal field theory of Kaluza-Klein black hole. For the extremal Kaluza-Klein black hole, the central charge and temperature of the dual conformal field are calculated, and the microscopic entropy calculated by using Cardy formula agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of extremal Kaluza-Klein black hole. For the non-extremal case, we investigate the hidden conformal symmetry of Kaluza-Klein black hole by studying the near-region wave equation of a neutral massless scalar field, and find the left and right temperatures of dual conformal field theory. Furthermore, the entropy of non-extremal Kaluza-Klein black hole is reproduced by using Cardy formula.

Hawking Radiation of Fermionic Field and Anomaly in 2+1 Dimensional Black Holes

The method of anomaly cancellation to derive Hawking radiation initiated by Robinson and Wilczek is applied to 2+1 dimensional stationary black holes. Using the dimensional reduction technique, we find that the near-horizon physics for the fermionic field in the background of the general 2+1 dimensional stationary black hole can be approximated by an infinite collection of two component fermionic fields in 1+1 dimensional spacetime background coupled with dilaton field and U(1) gauge field. By restoring the gauge invariance and the general coordinate covariance for the reduced two dimensional theory, Hawking flux and temperature of black hole are obtained. We apply this method to two types of black holes in three dimensional spacetime, which are BTZ black hole in Einstein gravity and a rotating black hole in Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend (BHT) massive gravity.
