Galaxy-Galaxy Weak Lensing Measurements from SDSS: I. Image Processing and Lensing signals

As the first paper in a series on the study of the galaxy-galaxy lensing from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7), we present our image processing pipeline that corrects the systematics primarily introduced by the Point Spread Function (PSF). Using this pipeline, we processed SDSS DR7 imaging data in $r$ band and generated a background galaxy catalog containing the shape information of each galaxy. Based on our own shape measurements of the galaxy images from SDSS DR7, we extract the galaxy-galaxy (GG) lensing signals around foreground spectroscopic galaxies binned in different luminosity and stellar mass. The overall signals are in good agreement with those obtained by \citet{Mandelbaum2005, Mandelbaum2006} from the SDSS DR4. The results in this paper with higher signal to noise ratio is due to the larger survey area than SDSS DR4, confirm that more luminous/massive galaxies bear stronger GG lensing signal. We also divide the foreground galaxies into red/blue and star forming/quenched subsamples and measured their GG lensing signals, respectively. We find that, at a specific stellar mass/luminosity, the red/quenched galaxies have relatively stronger GG lensing signals than their counterparts especially at large radii. These GG lensing signals can be used to probe the galaxy-halo mass relations and their environmental dependences in the halo occupation or conditional luminosity function framework.

Uplink Spectral Efficiency Analysis of Decoupled Access in Multiuser MIMO Communications

In a heterogeneous network consisting of macro base stations (MBSs) and small base stations (SBSs), the traditional cell association policy, i.e., coupled access (CA), is far from optimal, due to the significant difference between the coverage and transmit powers of MBSs and SBSs. Hence, users may choose to associate with different types of BSs in downlink (DL) and uplink (UL), i.e., decoupled access (DA), to enhance spectral efficiency. In this paper, DA in multiuser MIMO communications is investigated in terms of UL spectral efficiency. Firstly, we obtain the UL association probabilities. In contrast to the CA scenario, association probabilities for DA scenario only depend on the densities of BSs. Hence, DA allows UL and DL to be totally independent. Secondly, we derive lower bounds on the spectral efficiency. The lower bounds show that, different from CA, the UL spectral efficiency for DA scenario is irrelative with the transmit powers of BSs, which implies DA allows users to associate with any BSs that can achieve the highest UL spectral efficiency. Finally, the spectral efficiencies for DA and CA scenarios are compared via simulation results, where it can be concluded that the spectral efficiency in multiuser MIMO systems is improved by DA.

Charged scalar waves from the RN/CFT correspondence

We examine new tests for (non-)extremal Reissner-Nordström/Conformal field theory correspondences (RN/CFT) in this paper. The decay rate of the charged scalar wave sourced by an orbiting star around the black hole is computed and is compared with the decay rate computed in the corresponding CFT. We find that precise matches are achieved.

Time evolutions of scalar field perturbations in $D$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström Anti-de Sitter black holes

Reissner-Nordström Anti-de Sitter (RNAdS) black holes are unstable against the charged scalar field perturbations due to the well-known superradiance phenomenon. We present the time domain analysis of charged scalar field perturbations in the RNAdS black hole background in general dimensions. We show that the instabilities of charged scalar field can be explicitly illustrated from the time profiles of evolving scalar field. By using the Prony method to fit the time evolution data, we confirm the mode that dominates the long time behavior of scalar field is in accordance with the quasinormal mode from the frequency domain analysis. The superradiance origin of the instability can also be demonstrated by comparing the real part of the dominant mode with the superradiant condition of charged scalar field. It is shown that all the unstable modes are superradiant, which is consistent with the analytical result in the frequency domain analysis. Furthermore, we also confirm there exists the rapid exponential growing modes in the RNAdS case, which makes the RNAdS black hole a good test ground to investigate the nonlinear evolution of superradiant instability.

Constraints on the identity of the dark matter from strong gravitational lenses

The cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological model unambigously predicts that a large number of haloes should survive as subhaloes when they are accreted into a larger halo. The CDM model would be ruled out if such substructures were shown not to exist. By contrast, if the dark matter consists of warm particles (WDM), then below a threshold mass that depends on the particle mass far fewer substructures would be present. Finding subhaloes below a certain mass would then rule out warm particle masses below some value. Strong gravitational lensing provides a clean method to measure the subhalo mass function through distortions in the structure of Einstein rings and giant arcs.Using mock lensing observations constructed from high-resolution N-body simulations, we show that measurements of approximately 100 strong lens systems with a detection limit of $10^7 h^{-1} M_{\odot}$ would clearly distinguish CDM from WDM in the case where this consists of 7 keV sterile neutrinos such as those that might be responsible for the 3.5 keV X-ray emission line recently detected in galaxies and clusters.

Measuring subhalo mass in redMaPPer clusters with CFHT Stripe 82 Survey

We use the shear catalog from the CFHT Stripe-82 Survey to measure the subhalo masses of satellite galaxies in redMaPPer clusters. Assuming a Chabrier Initial Mass Function (IMF) and a truncated NFW model for the subhalo mass distribution, we find that the sub-halo mass to galaxy stellar mass ratio increases as a function of projected halo-centric radius $r_p$, from $M_{\rm sub}/M_{\rm star}=4.43^{+ 6.63}_{- 2.23}$ at $r_p \in [0.1,0.3]$ $h^{-1}Mpc$ to $M_{\rm sub}/M_{\rm star}=75.40^{+ 19.73}_{- 19.09}$ at $r_p \in [0.6,0.9]$ $h^{-1}Mpc$. We also investigate the dependence of subhalo masses on stellar mass by splitting satellite galaxies into two stellar mass bins: $10<\log(M_{\rm star}/M_{\rm sun})<10.5$ and $11<\log(M_{\rm star}/M_{\rm sun})<12$. The best-fit subhalo mass of the more massive satellite galaxy bin is larger than that of the less massive satellites: $\log(M_{\rm sub}/M_{\rm sun})=11.14 ^{+ 0.66 }_{- 0.73}$ ($M_{\rm sub}/M_{\rm star}=19.5^{+19.8}_{-17.9}$) versus $\log(M_{\rm sub}/M_{\rm sun})=12.38 ^{+ 0.16 }_{- 0.16}$ ($M_{\rm sub}/M_{\rm star}=21.1^{+7.4}_{-7.7}$).

Scalar waves from a star orbiting a BTZ black hole

In this paper we compute the decay rates of massless scalar waves excited by a star circularly orbiting around the non-extremal (general) and extremal BTZ black holes. These decay rates are compared with the corresponding quantities computed in the corresponding dual conformal field theories respectively. We find that matches are achieved in both cases.

Assessing the Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion method with the Illustris simulation

We assess the effectiveness of the Jeans-Anisotropic-MGE (JAM) technique with a state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodynamic simulation, the Illustris project. We perform JAM modelling on 1413 simulated galaxies with stellar mass M^* > 10^{10}M_{sun}, and construct an axisymmetric dynamical model for each galaxy. Combined with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation, we recover the projected root-mean-square velocity (V_rms) field of the stellar component, and investigate constraints on the stellar mass-to-light ratio, M^*/L, and the fraction of dark matter f_{DM} within 2.5 effective radii (R_e). We find that the enclosed total mass within 2.5 R_e is well constrained to within 10%. However, there is a degeneracy between the dark matter and stellar components with correspondingly larger individual errors. The 1 sigma scatter in the recovered M^*/L is 30-40% of the true value. The accuracy of the recovery of M^*/L depends on the triaxial shape of a galaxy. There is no significant bias for oblate galaxies, while for prolate galaxies the JAM-recovered stellar mass is on average 18% higher than the input values. We also find that higher image resolutions alleviate the dark matter and stellar mass degeneracy and yield systematically better parameter recovery.

Distinguishing general relativity and $f(R)$ gravity with the gravitational lensing Minkowski functionals

We explore the Minkowski functionals of weak lensing convergence map to distinguish between $f(R)$ gravity and the general relativity (GR). The mock weak lensing convergence maps are constructed with a set of high-resolution simulations assuming different gravity models. It is shown that the lensing MFs of $f(R)$ gravity can be considerably different from that of GR because of the environmentally dependent enhancement of structure formation. We also investigate the effect of lensing noise on our results, and find that it is likely to distinguish F5, F6 and GR gravity models with a galaxy survey of $\sim3000$ degree$^2$ and with a background source number density of $n_g=30~{\rm arcmin}^{-2}$, comparable to an upcoming survey dark energy survey (DES). We also find that the $f(R)$ signal can be partially degenerate with the effect of changing cosmology, but combined use of other observations, such as the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, can help break this degeneracy.

Time domain analysis of superradiant instability for the charged stringy black hole-mirror system

It has been proved that the charged stringy black holes are stable under the perturbations of massive charged scalar fields. However, superradiant instability can be generated by adding the mirror-like boundary condition to the composed system of charged stringy black hole and scalar field. The unstable boxed quasinormal modes have been calculated by using both analytical and numerical method. In this paper, we further provide a time domain analysis by performing a long time evolution of charged scalar field configuration in the background of the charged stringy black hole with the mirror-like boundary condition imposed. We have used the ingoing Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates to derive the evolution equation, and adopted Pseudo-spectral method and the forth-order Runge-Kutta method to evolve the scalar field with the initial Gaussian wave packet. It is shown by our numerical scheme that Fourier transforming the evolution data coincides well with the unstable modes computed from frequency domain analysis. The existence of the rapid growth mode makes the charged stringy black hole a good test ground to study the nonlinear development of superradiant instability.

Cosmological Constraints From Weak Lensing Peak Statistics With CFHT Stripe 82 Survey

We derived constraints on cosmological parameters using weak lensing peak statistics measured on the $\sim130~{\rm deg}^2$ of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Stripe 82 Survey (CS82). This analysis demonstrates the feasibility of using peak statistics in cosmological studies. For our measurements, we considered peaks with signal-to-noise ratio in the range of $ν=[3,6]$. For a flat $Λ$CDM model with only $(Ω_{\rm m}, σ_8)$ as free parameters, we constrained the parameters of the following relation $Σ_8=σ_8(Ω_{\rm m}/0.27)^α$ to be: $Σ_8=0.82 \pm 0.03 $ and $α=0.43\pm 0.02$. The $α$ value found is considerably smaller than the one measured in two-point and three-point cosmic shear correlation analyses, showing a significant complement of peak statistics to standard weak lensing cosmological studies. The derived constraints on $(Ω_{\rm m}, σ_8)$ are fully consistent with the ones from either WMAP9 or Planck. From the weak lensing peak abundances alone, we obtained marginalised mean values of $Ω_{\rm m}=0.38^{+0.27}_{-0.24}$ and $σ_8=0.81\pm 0.26$. Finally, we also explored the potential of using weak lensing peak statistics to constrain the mass-concentration relation of dark matter halos simultaneously with cosmological parameters.

Superradiant instability of D-dimensional Reissner-Nordström black hole mirror system

We analytically study the superradiant instability of a charged massless scalar field in the background of D-dimensional Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole caused by the mirror's boundary condition. By using the asymptotic matching method to solve the Klein-Gordon equation that govern the dynamics of the scalar field, we have derived the expressions of the complex parts of the boxed quasinormal frequencies, and shown they are positive in the regime of superradiance. This indicates the charged scalar field is unstable in D-dimensional Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole surrounded by mirror. The numerical work to calculate the boxed quasinormal frequencies in this system is still required in the future.

Scalar clouds in charged stringy black hole-mirror system

It is reported that massive scalar fields can form bound states around Kerr black holes [C. Herdeiro, and E. Radu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 221101 (2014)]. These bound states are called scalar clouds, which have a real frequency $ω=mΩ_H$, where $m$ is the azimuthal index and $Ω_H$ is the horizon angular velocity of Kerr black hole. In this paper, we study scalar clouds in a spherically symmetric background, i.e. charged stringy black holes, with the mirror-like boundary condition. These bound states satisfy the superradiant critical frequency condition $ω=qΦ_H$ for the charged scalar field, where $q$ is the charge of scalar field, and $Φ_H$ is the horizon electrostatic potential. We show that, for the specific set of black hole and scalar field parameters, the clouds are only possible for the specific mirror locations $r_m$. It is shown that the analytical results of mirror location $r_m$ for the clouds are perfectly coincide with the numerical results. We also show that the scalar clouds are also possible when the mirror locations are close to the horizon. At last, we provide an analytical calculation of the specific mirror locations $r_m$ for the scalar clouds in the $qQ\gg 1$ regime.

Numerical study of superradiant instability for charged stringy black hole-mirror system

We numerically study the superradiant instability of charged massless scalar field in the background of charged stringy black hole with mirror-like boundary condition. We compare the numerical result with the previous analytical result and show the dependencies of this instability upon various parameters of black hole charge $Q$, scalar field charge $q$, and mirror radius $r_m$. Especially, we have observed that imaginary part of BQN frequencies grows with the scalar field charge $q$ rapidly.

Superradiant instability of the charged scalar field in stringy black hole mirror system

It has been shown that the mass of the scalar field in the charged stringy black hole is never able to generate a potential well outside the event horizon to trap the superradiant modes. This is to say that the charged stringy black hole is stable against the massive charged scalar perturbation. In this paper we will study the superradiant instability of the massless scalar field in the background of charged stringy black hole due to a mirror-like boundary condition. The analytical expression of the unstable superradiant modes is derived by using the asymptotic matching method. It is also pointed out that the black hole mirror system becomes extremely unstable for a large charge $q$ of scalar field and the small mirror radius $r_m$.

The Size Evolution of Elliptical Galaxies

Recent work has suggested that the amplitude of the size mass relation of massive early type galaxies evolves with redshift. Here we use a semi-analytical galaxy formation model to study the size evolution of massive early type galaxies. We find this model is able to reproduce the amplitude of present day amplitude and slope of the relation between size and stellar mass for these galaxies, as well as its evolution. The amplitude of this relation reflects the typical compactness of dark halos at the time when most of the stars are formed. This link between size and star formation epoch is propagated in galaxy mergers. Mergers of high or moderate mass ratio (less than 1:3) become increasingly important with increasing present day stellar mass for galaxies more massive than $10^{11.4}M_{\odot}$. At lower masses, low mass ratio mergers play a more important role. In situ star formation contribute more to the size growth than it does to stellar mass growth. We also find that, for ETGs identified at $z=2$, minor mergers dominate subsequent growth both for stellar mass and in size, consistent with earlier theoretical results.

Trimer superfluid induced by photoassocation on the state-dependent optical lattice

We use the mean-field method, the Quantum Monte-carlo method and the Density matrix renormalization group method to study the trimer superfluid phase and the quantum phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model in an optical lattice, with explicit trimer tunneling term. Theoretically, we derive the explicit trimer hopping terms, such as $a_i^{3\dagger}a_j^3$, by the Schrieffer-Wolf transformation. In practice, the trimer super\-fluid described by these terms is driven by photoassociation. The phase transition between the trimer super\-fluid phase and other phases are also studied. Without the on-site interaction, the phase transition between the trimer superfluid phase and the Mott Insulator phase is continuous. Turning on the on-site interaction, the phase transitions are first order with Mott insulators of atom filling $1$ and $2$. With nonzero atom tunneling, the phase transition is first order from the atom superfluid to the trimer superfluid. In the trimer superfluid phase, the win\-ding numbers can be divided by three without any remainders. In the atom superfluid and pair superfluid, the vorticities are $1$ and $1/2$, respectively. However, the vorticity is $1/3$ for the trimer superfluid. The power law decay exponents is $1/2$ for the non diagonal correlation $a_i^{\dagger 3} a_j^{3}$, i.e. the same as the exponent of the correlation $a_i^{\dagger}a_j$ in hardcore bosons. The density dependent atom-tunneling term $n_i^2a_i^{\dagger}a_j$ and pair tunneling term $n_ia_i^{\dagger2}a_j^2$ are also studied. With these terms, the phase transition from the empty phase to atom superfluid is first order and different from the cases without the density dependent terms. The ef\-fects of temperature are studied. Our results will be helpful in realizing the trimer superfluid by a cold atom experiment.

Measuring the X-ray luminosities of SDSS DR7 clusters from RASS

We use ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) broadband X-ray images and the optical clusters identified from SDSS DR7 to estimate the X-ray luminosities around $\sim 65,000$ candidate clusters with masses $\ga 10^{13}\msunh$ based on an Optical to X-ray (OTX) code we develop. We obtain a catalogue with X-ray luminosity for each cluster. This catalog contains 817 clusters (473 at redshift $z\le 0.12$) with $S/N> 3$ in X-ray detection. We find about $65\%$ of these X-ray clusters have their most massive member located near the X-ray flux peak; for the rest $35\%$, the most massive galaxy is separated from the X-ray peak, with the separation following a distribution expected from a NFW profile. We investigate a number of correlations between the optical and X-ray properties of these X-ray clusters, and find that: the cluster X-ray luminosity is correlated with the stellar mass (luminosity) of the clusters, as well as with the stellar mass (luminosity) of the central galaxy and the mass of the halo, but the scatter in these correlations is large. Comparing the properties of X-ray clusters of similar halo masses but having different X-ray luminosities, we find that massive halos with masses $\ga 10^{14}\msunh$ contain a larger fraction of red satellite galaxies when they are brighter in X-ray. ... A cluster catalog containing the optical properties of member galaxies and the X-ray luminosity is available at {\it http://gax.shao.ac.cn/data/Group.html}.
