Anomaly analysis of Hawking radiation from Kaluza-Klein black hole with squashed horizon

Considering gravitational and gauge anomalies at the horizon, a new method that to derive Hawking radiations from black holes has been developed by Wilczek et al. In this paper, we apply this method to non-rotating and rotating Kaluza-Klein black holes with squashed horizon, respectively. For the rotating case, we found that, after the dimensional reduction, an effective U(1) gauge field is generated by an angular isometry. The results show that the gauge current and energy-momentum tensor fluxes are exactly equivalent to Hawking radiation from the event horizon.

Anomaly analysis of Hawking radiation from 2+1 dimensional spinning black hole

Considering gravitational and gauge anomalies at the horizon, a new successful method that to derive Hawking radiations from black holes has been developed recently by Wilczek et al.. By using the dimensional reduction technique, we apply this method to a non-vacuum solution, the 2+1 dimensional spinning black hole. The Hawking temperature and angular velocity on the horizon are obtained. The results may partially imply that this method is independent of the gravity theory, the dimension of spacetime and the topological structure of the event horizon.

High-fidelity universal quantum gates through quantum interference

Twisted rapid passage is a type of non-adiabatic rapid passage that gives rise to controllable quantum interference effects that were first observed experimentally in 2003. We show that twisted rapid passage sweeps can be used to implement a universal set of quantum gates that operate with high-fidelity. For each gate in the universal set, sweep parameter values are provided which simulations indicate will yield a quantum gate with error probability P_{e} < 10**(-4). Note that all gates in this universal set are driven by a **single** type of control field (twisted rapid passage), and the error probability for each gate falls below the rough-and-ready estimate for the accuracy threshold P_{a} ~ 10**(-4). The simulations suggest that the universal gate set produced by twisted rapid passage shows promise for use in a fault-tolerant scheme for quantum computing.

Quantization of Black Hole Entropy from Quasinormal Modes

In Phys. Rev. D 78 (2008) 104018 [arXiv:0807.1481], the conclusion that "entropy eigenvalues of GB black hole are discrete and equally spaced, but the area spacing is not equidistant" was firstly presented by Kothawala, Padmanabhan and Sarkar. In this paper, using the new physical interpretation of quasinormal modes proposed by Maggiore, we calculate the quantum spectra of entropy for various types of non-rotating black holes with no charge. The spectrum is obtained by imposing Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition to the adiabatic invariant quantity. We conjecture that the spacing of entropy spectrum is equidistant and is independent of the dimension of spacetime. However, the spacing of area spectrum depends on gravity theory. In Einstein's gravity, it is equally spaced, otherwise it is non-equidistant. This conjecture agrees with the result of Kothawala, Padmanabhan and Sarkar.

Modeling Galaxy-Galaxy Weak Lensing with SDSS Groups

We use galaxy groups selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) together with mass models for individual groups to study the galaxy-galaxy lensing signals expected from galaxies of different luminosities and morphological types. We compare our model predictions with the observational results obtained from the SDSS by Mandelbaum et al. (2006) for the same samples of galaxies. The observational results are well reproduced in a $Λ$CDM model based on the WMAP 3-year data, but a $Λ$CDM model with higher $σ_8$, such as the one based on the WMAP 1-year data, significantly over-predicts the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal. We model, separately, the contributions to the galaxy-galaxy lensing signals from different galaxies: central versus satellite, early-type versus late-type, and galaxies in halos of different masses. We also examine how the predicted galaxy-galaxy lensing signal depends on the shape, density profile, and the location of the central galaxy with respect to its host halo.

Fermions Tunneling from Apparent Horizon of FRW Universe

In the paper [arXiv:0809.1554], the scalar particles' Hawking radiation from the apparent horizon of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker(FRW) universe was investigated by using the tunneling formalism. They obtained the Hawking temperature associated with the apparent horizon, which was extensively applied in investigating the relationship between the first law of thermodynamics and Friedmann equations. In this paper, we calculate Fermions' Hawking radiation from the apparent horizon of FRW universe via tunneling formalism. Applying WKB approximation to the general covariant Dirac equation in FRW spacetime background, the radiation spectrum and Hawking temperature of apparent horizon are correctly recovered, which supports the arguments presented in the paper [arXiv:0809.1554].

Satellite Kinematics II: The Halo Mass-Luminosity Relation of Central Galaxies in SDSS

The kinematics of satellite galaxies reflect the masses of the extended dark matter haloes in which they orbit, and thus shed light on the mass-luminosity relation (MLR) of their corresponding central galaxies. In this paper we select a large sample of centrals and satellites from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and measure the kinematics (velocity dispersions) of the satellite galaxies as a function of the $r$-band luminosity of the central galaxies. Using the analytical framework presented in Paper I, we use these data to infer {\it both} the mean and the scatter of the MLR of central galaxies, carefully taking account of selection effects and biases introduced by the stacking procedure. As expected, brighter centrals on average reside in more massive haloes. In addition, we find that the scatter in halo masses for centrals of a given luminosity, $σ_{\log M}$, also increases with increasing luminosity. As we demonstrate, this is consistent with $σ_{\log L}$, which reflects the scatter in the conditional probability function $P(L_c|M)$, being independent of halo mass. Our analysis of the satellite kinematics yields $σ_{\log L}=0.16\pm0.04$, in excellent agreement with constraints from clustering and group catalogues, and with predictions from a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation. We thus conclude that the amount of stochasticity in galaxy formation, which is characterized by $σ_{\log L}$, is well constrained, is independent of halo mass, and is in good agreement with current models of galaxy formation.

Galaxy Clustering & Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing: A Promising Union to Constrain Cosmological Parameters

Galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing probe the connection between galaxies and their dark matter haloes in complementary ways. On one hand, the halo occupation statistics inferred from the observed clustering properties of galaxies are degenerate with the adopted cosmology. Consequently, different cosmologies imply different mass-to-light ratios for dark matter haloes. On the other hand, galaxy-galaxy lensing yields direct constraints on the actual mass-to-light ratios and it can be used to break this degeneracy, and thus to constrain cosmological parameters. In this paper we establish the link between galaxy luminosity and dark matter halo mass using the conditional luminosity function (CLF). We constrain the CLF parameters using the galaxy luminosity function and the luminosity dependence of the correlation lengths of galaxies. The resulting CLF models are used to predict the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal. For a cosmology with $(Ω_{\rm m},σ_8)=(0.238,0.734)$, the model accurately fits the galaxy-galaxy lensing data obtained from the SDSS. For a comparison cosmology with $(Ω_{\rm m},σ_8)=(0.3,0.9)$, however, we can accurately fit the luminosity function and clustering properties of the galaxy population, but the model predicts mass-to-light ratios that are too high, resulting in a strong overprediction of the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal. We conclude that the combination of galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing is a powerful probe of the galaxy-dark matter connection, with the potential to yield tight constraints on cosmological parameters. Since this method mainly probes the mass distribution on non-linear scales, it is complementary to constraints obtained from the galaxy power-spectrum, which mainly probes the large-scale (linear) matter distribution.

Hawking radiation of Dirac particles via tunneling from Kerr black hole

We investigated Dirac Particles' Hawking radiation from event horizon of Kerr black hole in terms of the tunneling formalism. Applying WKB approximation to the general covariant Dirac equation in Kerr spacetime background, we obtain the tunneling probability for fermions and Hawking temperature of Kerr black hole. The result obtained by taking the fermion tunneling into account is consistent with the previous literatures.

The results obtained by taking the fermion tunneling into account is consistent with the previous literatures.

A New Route to the Interpretation of Hopf Invariant

We discuss an object from algebraic topology, Hopf invariant, and reinterpret it in terms of the $ϕ$-mapping topological current theory. The main purpose in this paper is to present a new theoretical framework which can directly give the relationship between Hopf invariant and the linking numbers of the higher dimensional submanifolds of Euclidean space $R^{2n-1}$. For the sake of this purpose we introduce a topological tensor current which can naturally deduce the $(n-1)$ dimensional topological defect in $R^{2n-1}$ space. If these $(n-1)$ dimensional topological defects are closed oriented submanifolds of $R^{2n-1}$, they are just the $(n-1)$ dimensional knots. The linking number of these knots is well defined. Using the inner structure of the topological tensor current, the relationship between Hopf invariant and the linking numbers of the higher dimensional knots can be constructed.

Hawking Temperature of Dilaton Black Holes from Tunneling

Recently, it has been suggested that Hawking radiation can be derived from quantum tunnelling methods. In this letter, we calculated Hawking temperature of dilatonic black holes from tunnelling formalism. The two semi-classical methods adopted here are: the null-geodesic method proposed by Parikh and Wilczek and the Hamilton-Jacobi method propsed by Angheben et al. We apply the two methods to anylysis the Hawking temperature of the static spherical symmetric dilatonic black hole, the rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole, and the rotating Kerr-Sen black hole.

Unified First Law and Thermodynamics of Dynamical Black Hole in n-dimensional Vaidya Spacetime

As a simple but important example of dynamical black hole, we analysis the dynamical black hole in $n$-dimensional Vaidya spacetime in detail. We investigated the thermodynamics of field equation in $n$-dimensional Vaidya spacetime. The unified first law was derived in terms of the methods proposed by Sean A Hayward. The first law of dynamical black hole was obtained by projecting the unified first law along the trapping horizon. At last, the second law of dynamical black hole is also discussed.

Inner topological structure of Hopf invariant

In light of $ϕ$-mapping topological current theory, the inner topological structure of Hopf invariant is investigated. It is revealed that Hopf invariant is just the winding number of Gauss mapping. According to the inner structure of topological current, a precise expression for Hopf invariant is also presented. It is the total sum of all the self-linking and all the linking numbers of the knot family.

Vector and Spinor Decomposition of SU(2) Gauge Potential, their quivalence and Knot Structure in SU(2) Chern-Simons Theory

In this paper, spinor and vector decomposition of SU(2) gauge potential are presented and their equivalence is constructed using a simply proposal. We also obtain the action of Faddeev nonlinear O(3) sigma model from the SU(2) massive gauge field theory which is proposed according to the gauge invariant principle. At last, the knot structure in SU(2) Chern-Simons filed theory is discussed in terms of the $ϕ$--mapping topological current theory. The topological charge of the knot is characterized by the Hopf indices and the Brouwer degrees of $ϕ$-mapping.

High Fidelity Single-Qubit Gates Using Non-adiabatic Rapid Passage

Numerical simulation results are presented which suggest that a class of non-adiabatic rapid passage sweeps first realized experimentally in 1991 should be capable of implementing a set of quantum gates that is universal for one-qubit unitary operations and whose elements operate with error probabilities per operation P < 10^{-4}. The sweeps are non-composite and generate controllable quantum interference effects which allow the one-qubit gates produced to operate non-adiabatically while maintaining high accuracy. The simulations suggest that the one-qubit gates produced by these sweeps show promise as possible elements of a fault-tolerant scheme for quantum computing.

Lanthanum-Cerium Based Bulk Metallic Glasses with Superior Glass-Forming Ability

A quinary (La0.5Ce0.5)65Al10(Co0.6Cu0.4)25 alloy with superior glass-forming ability (GFA), identified by the formation of fully glassy rod of 32 mm in diameter by tilt-pour casting, was reported. By comparing with the GFA of quarternary (La0.5Ce0.5)65Al10TM25 and ternary Ln65Al10TM25 alloys (Ln = La or Ce; TM = Co or Cu), we suggest that the strong frustration of crystallization by utilizing the coexistence of La-Ce and Co-Cu to complicate competing crystalline phases is helpful to construct BMG component with superior GFA.

Influence of Similar Atom Substitution on Glass Formation in (La-Ce)-Al-Co Bulk Metallic Glasses

The glass-formation range of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) based on lanthanum and cerium was pinpointed in La-Al-Co, Ce-Al-Co and pseudo-ternary (La-Ce)-Al-Co system respectively by copper mold casting. Through the stepwise substitution of La for solvent Ce in (LaxCe1-x)65Al10Co25 alloys (0<x<1), the fully glassy rods of the (La0.7Ce0.3)65Al10Co25 alloy can be successfully produced up to 25 mm in diameter by tilt-pour casting. Comparing with the glass-forming ability (GFA) of single-lanthanide based alloys, La65Al10Co25 and Ce65Al10Co25, the coexistence of La and Ce with similar atomic size and various valence electronic structure can obviously improve the GFA of (LaxCe1-x)65Al10Co25 BMGs, which can't be explained by the former GFA criteria for BMGs, e.g. atomic size mismatch and negative heats of mixing. A thermodynamic model was proposed to evaluate this substitution effect, which gives a reasonable explanation for the obvious improvement of GFA induced by the coexistence of similar atoms.
