Holography inspired self-controlled reconfigurable intelligent surface

Among various promising candidate technologies for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications, recent advances in microwave metasurfaces have sparked a new research area of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). By controllably reprogramming the wireless propagation channel, RISs are envisioned to achieve low-cost wireless capacity boosting, coverage extension, and enhanced energy efficiency. To reprogram the channel, each meta-atom on RIS needs an external control signal, which is usually generated by base station (BS). However, BS-controlled RISs require complicated control cables, which hamper their massive deployments. Here, we eliminate the need for BS control by proposing a self-controlled RIS (SC-RIS), which is inspired by the optical holography principle. Different from the existing BS-controlled RISs, each meta-atom of SC-RIS is integrated with an additional power detector for holographic recording. By applying the classical Fourier-transform processing to the measured hologram, SC-RIS is capable of retrieving the user's channel state information required for beamforming, thus enabling autonomous RIS beamforming without control cables. Owing to this WiFi-like plug-and-play capability without the BS control, SC-RISs are expected to enable easy and massive deployments in the future 6G systems.

Overcoming Pitfalls in Graph Contrastive Learning Evaluation: Toward Comprehensive Benchmarks

The rise of self-supervised learning, which operates without the need for labeled data, has garnered significant interest within the graph learning community. This enthusiasm has led to the development of numerous Graph Contrastive Learning (GCL) techniques, all aiming to create a versatile graph encoder that leverages the wealth of unlabeled data for various downstream tasks. However, the current evaluation standards for GCL approaches are flawed due to the need for extensive hyper-parameter tuning during pre-training and the reliance on a single downstream task for assessment. These flaws can skew the evaluation away from the intended goals, potentially leading to misleading conclusions. In our paper, we thoroughly examine these shortcomings and offer fresh perspectives on how GCL methods are affected by hyper-parameter choices and the choice of downstream tasks for their evaluation. Additionally, we introduce an enhanced evaluation framework designed to more accurately gauge the effectiveness, consistency, and overall capability of GCL methods.

Multiperson Detection and Vital-Sign Sensing Empowered by Space-Time-Coding RISs

Passive human sensing using wireless signals has attracted increasing attention due to its superiorities of non-contact and robustness in various lighting conditions. However, when multiple human individuals are present, their reflected signals could be intertwined in the time, frequency and spatial domains, making it challenging to separate them. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel system for multiperson detection and monitoring of vital signs (i.e., respiration and heartbeat) with the assistance of space-time-coding (STC) reconfigurable intelligent metasurfaces (RISs). Specifically, the proposed system scans the area of interest (AoI) for human detection by using the harmonic beams generated by the STC RIS. Simultaneously, frequencyorthogonal beams are assigned to each detected person for accurate estimation of their respiration rate (RR) and heartbeat rate (HR). Furthermore, to efficiently extract the respiration signal and the much weaker heartbeat signal, we propose an improved variational mode decomposition (VMD) algorithm to accurately decompose the complex reflected signals into a smaller number of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). We build a prototype to validate the proposed multiperson detection and vital-sign monitoring system. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system can simultaneously monitor the vital signs of up to four persons. The errors of RR and HR estimation using the improved VMD algorithm are below 1 RPM (respiration per minute) and 5 BPM (beats per minute), respectively. Further analysis reveals that the flexible beam controlling mechanism empowered by the STC RIS can reduce the noise reflected from other irrelative objects on the physical layer, and improve the signal-to-noise ratio of echoes from the human chest.

Meanwhile, we would also investigate the benefits that RISs bring to these applications. Furthermore, we explore the application of RISs in human micro-motion sensing, and propose a vital signs monitoring system enhanced by RISs. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the promising potential of RISs in sensing vital signs for manipulating individuals. Finally, we discuss the technical challenges and opportunities in this field.

Rethinking Sensors Modeling: Hierarchical Information Enhanced Traffic Forecasting

With the acceleration of urbanization, traffic forecasting has become an essential role in smart city construction. In the context of spatio-temporal prediction, the key lies in how to model the dependencies of sensors. However, existing works basically only consider the micro relationships between sensors, where the sensors are treated equally, and their macroscopic dependencies are neglected. In this paper, we argue to rethink the sensor's dependency modeling from two hierarchies: regional and global perspectives. Particularly, we merge original sensors with high intra-region correlation as a region node to preserve the inter-region dependency. Then, we generate representative and common spatio-temporal patterns as global nodes to reflect a global dependency between sensors and provide auxiliary information for spatio-temporal dependency learning. In pursuit of the generality and reality of node representations, we incorporate a Meta GCN to calibrate the regional and global nodes in the physical data space. Furthermore, we devise the cross-hierarchy graph convolution to propagate information from different hierarchies. In a nutshell, we propose a Hierarchical Information Enhanced Spatio-Temporal prediction method, HIEST, to create and utilize the regional dependency and common spatio-temporal patterns. Extensive experiments have verified the leading performance of our HIEST against state-of-the-art baselines. We publicize the code to ease reproducibility.

PromptST: Prompt-Enhanced Spatio-Temporal Multi-Attribute Prediction

In the era of information explosion, spatio-temporal data mining serves as a critical part of urban management. Considering the various fields demanding attention, e.g., traffic state, human activity, and social event, predicting multiple spatio-temporal attributes simultaneously can alleviate regulatory pressure and foster smart city construction. However, current research can not handle the spatio-temporal multi-attribute prediction well due to the complex relationships between diverse attributes. The key challenge lies in how to address the common spatio-temporal patterns while tackling their distinctions. In this paper, we propose an effective solution for spatio-temporal multi-attribute prediction, PromptST. We devise a spatio-temporal transformer and a parameter-sharing training scheme to address the common knowledge among different spatio-temporal attributes. Then, we elaborate a spatio-temporal prompt tuning strategy to fit the specific attributes in a lightweight manner. Through the pretrain and prompt tuning phases, our PromptST is able to enhance the specific spatio-temoral characteristic capture by prompting the backbone model to fit the specific target attribute while maintaining the learned common knowledge. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets verify that our PromptST attains state-of-the-art performance. Furthermore, we also prove PromptST owns good transferability on unseen spatio-temporal attributes, which brings promising application potential in urban computing. The implementation code is available to ease reproducibility.

A numerical simulation method of fish adaption behavior based on deep reinforcement learning and fluid-structure coupling-realization of some lateral line functions

Improving the numerical method of fish autonomous swimming behavior in complex environments is of great significance to the optimization of bionic controller, the design of fish passing facilities and the study of fish behavior. This work has built a fish autonomous swimming simulation platform, which adapts the high-precision IB-LBM to simulate the dynamic process of the interaction between the fish and the flow field in real time, and realizes the fish brain motion control through the SAC deep reinforcement learning algorithm.More importantly,in view of the poor generalization of the existing simulation platform,a method to simulate the fish's lateral line function is proposed.By adding the Lateral-line machine and designing the Macro-action system, the intelligent fish has the ability to recognize, classify, memorize and transplant the corresponding swimming strategy in the unsteady field.Using this method, the training and simulation of point-to-point predation swimming and Kamangait test under different inlet velocities are carried out.In the example of point-to-point predation swimming, the fish in random position can adjust the swimming posture and speed autonomously to catch the fast moving food, and has a certain prediction ability on the movement trajectory of the food.In the Kaman-gait test, the trained fish are placed in three different Kamangait flow fields,to study its ability to recognize the flow field and select swimming strategies through experience. The results of numerical experiments show that, comparing with the other value function networks, the SAC algorithm based on maximum entropy has more advantages in convergence speed and training efficiency when simulating fish brain decision-making.The use of the Lateral line Machine and Macro-action system can avoid the waste of experience and improve the adaptability of intelligent fish in the new complex flow field environment.

Topological metasurface: From passive toward active and beyond

Metasurfaces are subwavelength structured thin films consisting of arrays of units that allow the controls of polarization, phase and amplitude of light over a subwavelength thickness. The recent developments in topological photonics have greatly broadened the horizon in designing the metasurfaces for novel functional applications. In this review, we summarize recent progress in the research field of topological metasurfaces, firstly from the perspectives of passive and active in the classical regime, and then in the quantum regime. More specifically, we begin by examining the passive topological phenomena in two-dimensional photonic systems, including both time-reversal broken systems and time-reversal preserved systems. Subsequently, we move to discuss the cutting-edge studies of the active topological metasurfaces, including nonlinear topological metasurfaces and reconfigurable topological metasurfaces. After overviewing the topological metasurfaces in the classical regime, we show how the topological metasurfaces could provide a new platform for quantum information and quantum many-body physics. Finally, we conclude and describe some challenges and future directions of this fast-evolving field.

Dimensionality Reduced Antenna Array for Beamforming/steering

Beamforming makes possible a focused communication method. It is extensively employed in many disciplines involving electromagnetic waves, including arrayed ultrasonic, optical, and high-speed wireless communication. Conventional beam steering often requires the addition of separate active amplitude phase control units after each radiating element. The high power consumption and complexity of large-scale phased arrays can be overcome by reducing the number of active controllers, pushing beamforming into satellite communications and deep space exploration. Here, we suggest a brand-new design for a phased array antenna with a dimension reduced cascaded angle offset (DRCAO-PAA). Furthermore, the suggested DRCAO-PAA was compressed by using the concept of singular value deposition. To pave the way for practical application the particle swarm optimization algorithm and deep neural network Transformer were adopted. Based on this theoretical framework, an experimental board was built to verify the theory. Finally, the 16/8/4 -array beam steering was demonstrated by using 4/3/2 active controllers, respectively.

Collaboration in Participant-Centric Federated Learning: A Game-Theoretical Perspective

Federated learning (FL) is a promising distributed framework for collaborative artificial intelligence model training while protecting user privacy. A bootstrapping component that has attracted significant research attention is the design of incentive mechanism to stimulate user collaboration in FL. The majority of works adopt a broker-centric approach to help the central operator to attract participants and further obtain a well-trained model. Few works consider forging participant-centric collaboration among participants to pursue an FL model for their common interests, which induces dramatic differences in incentive mechanism design from the broker-centric FL. To coordinate the selfish and heterogeneous participants, we propose a novel analytic framework for incentivizing effective and efficient collaborations for participant-centric FL. Specifically, we respectively propose two novel game models for contribution-oblivious FL (COFL) and contribution-aware FL (CAFL), where the latter one implements a minimum contribution threshold mechanism. We further analyze the uniqueness and existence for Nash equilibrium of both COFL and CAFL games and design efficient algorithms to achieve equilibrium solutions. Extensive performance evaluations show that there exists free-riding phenomenon in COFL, which can be greatly alleviated through the adoption of CAFL model with the optimized minimum threshold.

Directly wireless communication of human minds via non-invasive brain-computer-metasurface platform

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), invasive or non-invasive, have projected unparalleled vision and promise for assisting patients in need to better their interaction with the surroundings. Inspired by the BCI-based rehabilitation technologies for nerve-system impairments and amputation, we propose an electromagnetic brain-computer-metasurface (EBCM) paradigm, regulated by human's cognition by brain signals directly and non-invasively. We experimentally show that our EBCM platform can translate human's mind from evoked potentials of P300-based electroencephalography to digital coding information in the electromagnetic domain non-invasively, which can be further processed and transported by an information metasurface in automated and wireless fashions. Directly wireless communications of the human minds are performed between two EBCM operators with accurate text transmissions. Moreover, several other proof-of-concept mind-control schemes are presented using the same EBCM platform, exhibiting flexibly-customized capabilities of information processing and synthesis like visual-beam scanning, wave modulations, and pattern encoding.

Enabling Long-Term Cooperation in Cross-Silo Federated Learning: A Repeated Game Perspective

Cross-silo federated learning (FL) is a distributed learning approach where clients of the same interest train a global model cooperatively while keeping their local data private. The success of a cross-silo FL process requires active participation of many clients. Clients in cross-silo FL aim to optimize their long-term benefits by selfishly choosing their participation levels. While there has been some work on incentivizing clients to join FL, the analysis of clients' long-term selfish participation behaviors in cross-silo FL remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we analyze the selfish participation behaviors of heterogeneous clients in cross-silo FL. Specifically, we model clients' long-term selfish participation behaviors as an infinitely repeated game. For the stage game SPFL, we derive the unique Nash equilibrium (NE), and propose a distributed algorithm for each client to calculate its equilibrium participation strategy. We show that at the NE, clients fall into at most three categories: (i) free riders, (ii) a unique partial contributor (if exists), and (iii) contributors. For the long-term interactions among clients, we derive a cooperative strategy for clients which minimizes the number of free riders while increasing the amount of local data for model training. We show that enforced by a punishment strategy, such a cooperative strategy is a subgame perfect Nash equilibrium (SPNE) of the infinitely repeated game, under which some clients who are free riders at the NE of the stage game choose to be (partial) contributors. We further propose an algorithm to calculate the optimal SPNE which minimizes the number of free riders while maximizing the amount of local data for model training. Simulation results show that our derived optimal SPNE can effectively reduce the number of free riders by up to 99.3% and increase the amount of local data for model training by up to 82.3%.

Multiple Dynamic Pricing for Demand Response with Adaptive Clustering-based Customer Segmentation in Smart Grids

In this paper, we propose a realistic multiple dynamic pricing approach to demand response in the retail market. First, an adaptive clustering-based customer segmentation framework is proposed to categorize customers into different groups to enable the effective identification of usage patterns. Second, customized demand models with important market constraints which capture the price-demand relationship explicitly, are developed for each group of customers to improve the model accuracy and enable meaningful pricing. Third, the multiple pricing based demand response is formulated as a profit maximization problem subject to realistic market constraints. The overall aim of the proposed scalable and practical method aims to achieve 'right' prices for 'right' customers so as to benefit various stakeholders in the system such as grid operators, customers and retailers. The proposed multiple pricing framework is evaluated via simulations based on real-world datasets.

MulDE: Multi-teacher Knowledge Distillation for Low-dimensional Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Link prediction based on knowledge graph embeddings (KGE) aims to predict new triples to automatically construct knowledge graphs (KGs). However, recent KGE models achieve performance improvements by excessively increasing the embedding dimensions, which may cause enormous training costs and require more storage space. In this paper, instead of training high-dimensional models, we propose MulDE, a novel knowledge distillation framework, which includes multiple low-dimensional hyperbolic KGE models as teachers and two student components, namely Junior and Senior. Under a novel iterative distillation strategy, the Junior component, a low-dimensional KGE model, asks teachers actively based on its preliminary prediction results, and the Senior component integrates teachers' knowledge adaptively to train the Junior component based on two mechanisms: relation-specific scaling and contrast attention. The experimental results show that MulDE can effectively improve the performance and training speed of low-dimensional KGE models. The distilled 32-dimensional model is competitive compared to the state-of-the-art high-dimensional methods on several widely-used datasets.

Reputation and Pricing Dynamics in Online Markets

We study the economic interactions among sellers and buyers in online markets. In such markets, buyers have limited information about the product quality, but can observe the sellers' reputations which depend on their past transaction histories and ratings from past buyers. Sellers compete in the same market through pricing, while considering the impact of their heterogeneous reputations. We consider sellers with limited as well as unlimited capacities, which correspond to different practical market scenarios. In the unlimited seller capacity scenario, buyers prefer the seller with the highest reputation-price ratio. If the gap between the highest and second highest seller reputation levels is large enough, then the highest reputation seller dominates the market as a monopoly. If sellers' reputation levels are relatively close to each other, then those sellers with relatively high reputations will survive at the equilibrium, while the remaining relatively low reputation sellers will get zero market share. In the limited seller capacity scenario, we further consider two different cases. If each seller can only serve one buyer, then it is possible for sellers to set their monopoly prices at the equilibrium while all sellers gain positive market shares; if each seller can serve multiple buyers, then it is possible for sellers to set maximum prices at the equilibrium. Simulation results show that the dynamics of reputations and prices in the longer-term interactions will converge to stable states, and the initial buyer ratings of the sellers play the critical role in determining sellers' reputations and prices at the stable state.

Reduced Ionic Diffusion by the Dynamic Electron-Ion Collisions in Warm Dense Hydrogen

The dynamic electron-ion collisions play an important rolein determining the static and transport properties of warmdense matter (WDM). Electron force field (eFF) method is applied to study the ionic transport properties of warm densehydrogen. Compared with the results from quantum moleculardynamics and orbital-free molecular dynamics, the ionicdiffusions are largely reduced by involving the dynamic collisions of electrons and ions. This physics is verified by quantum Langevin molecular dynamics (QLMD) simulations, which includes electron-ion collisions induced friction(EI-CIF) into the dynamic equation of ions. Based on these new results, we proposed a model including the correctionof collisions induced friction of the ionic diffusion. The CIF model has been verified to be valid at a wide range ofdensity and temperature. We also compare the results with the Yukawa one component plasma (YOCP) model andEffective OCP (EOCP) model. We proposed to calculate the self-diffusion coefficients using the EOCP model modifiedby the CIF model to introduce the dynamic electron-ion collisions effect.

Selfish Caching Games on Directed Graphs

Caching networks can reduce the routing costs of accessing contents by caching contents closer to users. However, cache nodes may belong to different entities and behave selfishly to maximize their own benefits, which often lead to performance degradation for the overall network. While there has been extensive literature on allocating contents to caches to maximize the social welfare, the analysis of selfish caching behaviors remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we model the selfish behaviors of cache nodes as selfish caching games on arbitrary directed graphs with heterogeneous content popularity. We study the existence of a pure strategy Nash equilibrium (PSNE) in selfish caching games, and analyze its efficiency in terms of social welfare. We show that a PSNE does not always exist in arbitrary-topology caching networks. However, if the network does not have a mixed request loop, i.e., a directed loop in which each edge is traversed by at least one content request, we show that a PSNE always exists and can be found in polynomial time. Furthermore, we can avoid mixed request loops by properly choosing request forwarding paths. We then show that the efficiency of Nash equilibria, captured by the price of anarchy (PoA), can be arbitrarily poor if we allow arbitrary content request patterns, and adding extra cache nodes can make the PoA worse, i.e., cache paradox happens. However, when cache nodes have homogeneous request patterns, we show that the PoA is bounded even allowing arbitrary topologies. We further analyze the selfish caching games for cache nodes with limited computational capabilities, and show that an approximate PSNE exists with bounded PoA in certain cases of interest. Simulation results show that increasing the cache capacity in the network improves the efficiency of Nash equilibria, while adding extra cache nodes can degrade the efficiency of Nash equilibria.

Reprogrammable plasmonic topological insulators with ultrafast control

Topological photonics has revolutionized our understanding of light propagation, but most of current studies are focused on designing a static photonic structure. Developing a dynamic photonic topological platform to switch multiple topological functionalities at ultrafast speed is still a great challenge. Here we demonstrate an ultrafast reprogrammable plasmonic topological insulator, where the topological propagation route can be dynamically steered at nanosecond-level switching time, namely more than 10^7 times faster than the current state-of-the-art. This orders-of-magnitude improvement is achieved by using ultrafast electronic switches in an innovative way to implement the programmability. Due to the flexible programmability, many existing photonic topological functionalities can be integrated into this agile topological platform. Our work brings the current studies of photonic topological insulators to a digital and intelligent era, which could boost the development of intelligent and ultrafast photoelectric devices with built-in topological protection.
