Tailoring c-axis orientation in epitaxial Ruddlesden-Popper Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{1.5}$MnO$_{4}$ films

Interest for layered Ruddlesden-Popper strongly correlated manganites of Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$ as well as to their thin film polymorphs is motivated by the high temperature of charge orbital ordering above room temperature. We report on the tailoring of the c-axis orientation in epitaxial RP-PCMO films grown on SrTiO$_3$ (STO) substrates with different orientations as well as the use of CaMnO$_3$ (CMO) buffer layers. Films on STO(110) reveal in-plane alignment of the c-axis lying along to the [100] direction. On STO(100), two possible directions of the in-plane c-axis lead to a mosaic like, quasi two-dimensional nanostructure, consisting of RP, rock-salt and perovskite building blocks. With the use of a CMO buffer layer, RP-PCMO epitaxial films with c-axis out-of-plane were realized. Different physical vapor deposition techniques, i.e. ion beam sputtering (IBS), pulsed laser deposition (PLD) as well as metalorganic aerosol deposition (MAD) are applied in order to distinguish between the effect of growth conditions and intrinsic epitaxial properties. For all deposition techniques, despite their very different growth conditions, the surface morphology, crystal structure and orientation of the thin films reveal a high level of similarity as verified by X-ray diffraction, scanning and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. We found that for different epitaxial relations the stress in the films can be relaxed by means of a modified interface chemistry. The charge ordering in the films estimated by resistivity measurements occurs at a temperature close to that expected in bulk material.

Age of Processing: Age-driven Status Sampling and Processing Offloading for Edge Computing-enabled Real-time IoT Applications

The freshness of status information is of great importance for time-critical Internet of Things (IoT) applications. A metric measuring status freshness is the age-of-information (AoI), which captures the time elapsed from the status being generated at the source node (e.g., a sensor) to the latest status update. However, in intelligent IoT applications such as video surveillance, the status information is revealed after some computation intensive and time-consuming data processing operations, which would affect the status freshness. In this paper, we propose a novel metric, age-of-processing (AoP), to quantify such status freshness, which captures the time elapsed of the newest received processed status data since it is generated. Compared with AoI, AoP further takes the data processing time into account. Since an IoT device has limited computation and energy resource, the device can choose to offload the data processing to the nearby edge server under constrained status sampling frequency. We aim to minimize the average AoP in a long-term process by jointly optimizing the status sampling frequency and processing offloading policy. We formulate this online problem as an infinite-horizon constrained Markov decision process (CMDP) with average reward criterion. We then transform the CMDP problem into an unconstrained Markov decision process (MDP) by leveraging a Lagrangian method, and propose a Lagrangian transformation framework for the original CMDP problem. Furthermore, we integrate the framework with perturbation based refinement for achieving the optimal policy of the CMDP problem. Extensive numerical evaluations show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the benchmarks, with an average AoP reduction up to 30%.

Intelligent Metasurface Imager and Recognizer

It is ever-increasingly demanded to remotely monitor people in daily life using radio-frequency probing signals. However, conventional systems can hardly be deployed in real-world settings since they typically require objects to either deliberately cooperate or carry a wireless active device or identification tag. To accomplish the complicated successive tasks using a single device in real time, we propose a smart metasurface imager and recognizer simultaneously, empowered by a network of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for adaptively controlling data flow. Here, three ANNs are employed in an integrated hierarchy: transforming measured microwave data into images of whole human body; classifying the specifically designated spots (hand and chest) within the whole image; and recognizing human hand signs instantly at Wi-Fi frequency of 2.4 GHz. Instantaneous in-situ imaging of full scene and adaptive recognition of hand signs and vital signs of multiple non-cooperative people have been experimentally demonstrated. We also show that the proposed intelligent metasurface system work well even when it is passively excited by stray Wi-Fi signals that ubiquitously exist in our daily lives. The reported strategy could open a new avenue for future smart cities, smart homes, human-device interactive interfaces, healthy monitoring, and safety screening free of visual privacy issues.

Technical Report for "Incentivizing Wi-Fi Network Crowdsourcing: A Contract Theoretic Approach"

Crowdsourced wireless community network enables individual users to share their private Wi-Fi access points (APs) with each other, hence can achieve a large Wi-Fi coverage with a small deployment cost via crowdsourcing. This paper presents a novel contract-based incentive framework to incentivize such a Wi-Fi network crowdsourcing under incomplete information (where each user has certain private information such as mobility pattern and Wi-Fi access quality). In the proposed framework, the network operator designs and offers a set of contract items to users, each consisting of a Wi-Fi access price (that a user can charge others for accessing his AP) and a subscription fee (that a user needs to pay the operator for joining the community). Different from the existing contracts in the literature, in our contract model each user's best choice depends not only on his private information but also on other users' choices. This greatly complicates the contract design, as the operator needs to analyze the equilibrium choices of all users, rather than the best choice of each single user. We first derive the feasible contract that guarantees the users' truthful information disclosure based on the equilibrium analysis of user choice, and then derive the optimal (and feasible) contract that yields the maximal profit for the operator. Our analysis shows that a user who provides a higher Wi-Fi access quality is more likely to choose a higher Wi-Fi access price and subscription fee, regardless of the user mobility pattern. Simulation results further show that when increasing the average Wi-Fi access quality of users, the operator can gain more profit, but (counter-intuitively) offer lower Wi-Fi access prices and subscription fees for users.

Economic Analysis of Crowdsourced Wireless Community Networks

Crowdsourced wireless community networks can effectively alleviate the limited coverage issue of Wi-Fi access points (APs), by encouraging individuals (users) to share their private residential Wi-Fi APs with others. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive economic analysis for such a crowdsourced network, with the particular focus on the users' behavior analysis and the community network operator's pricing design. Specifically, we formulate the interactions between the network operator and users as a two-layer Stackelberg model, where the operator determining the pricing scheme in Layer I, and then users determining their Wi-Fi sharing schemes in Layer II. First, we analyze the user behavior in Layer II via a two-stage membership selection and network access game, for both small-scale networks and large-scale networks. Then, we design a partial price differentiation scheme for the operator in Layer I, which generalizes both the complete price differentiation scheme and the single pricing scheme (i.e., no price differentiation). We show that the proposed partial pricing scheme can achieve a good tradeoff between the revenue and the implementation complexity. Numerical results demonstrate that when using the partial pricing scheme with only two prices, we can increase the operator's revenue up to 124.44% comparing with the single pricing scheme, and can achieve an average of 80% of the maximum operator revenue under the complete price differentiation scheme.

A Game-Theoretic Analysis of User Behaviors in Crowdsourced Wireless Community Networks

A crowdsourced wireless community network can effectively alleviate the limited coverage issue of Wi-Fi access points (APs), by encouraging individuals (users) to share their private residential Wi-Fi APs with each other. This paper presents the first study on the users' joint membership selection and network access problem in such a network. Specifically, we formulate the problem as a two-stage dynamic game: Stage I corresponds to a membership selection game, in which each user chooses his membership type; Stage II corresponds to a set of network access games, in each of which each user decides his WiFi connection time on the AP at his current location. We analyze the Subgame Perfect Equilibrium (SPE) systematically, and study whether and how best response dynamics can reach the equilibrium. Through numerical studies, we further explore how the equilibrium changes with the users' mobility patterns and network access evaluations. We show that a user with a more popular home location, a smaller travel time, or a smaller network access evaluation is more likely to choose a specific type of membership called Bill. We further demonstrate how the network operator can optimize its pricing and incentive mechanism based on the game equilibrium analysis in this work.

Time and Location Aware Mobile Data Pricing

Mobile users' correlated mobility and data consumption patterns often lead to severe cellular network congestion in peak hours and hot spots. This paper presents an optimal design of time and location aware mobile data pricing, which incentivizes users to smooth traffic and reduce network congestion. We derive the optimal pricing scheme through analyzing a two-stage decision process, where the operator determines the time and location aware prices by minimizing his total cost in Stage I, and each mobile user schedules his mobile traffic by maximizing his payoff (i.e., utility minus payment) in Stage II. We formulate the two-stage decision problem as a bilevel optimization problem, and propose a derivative-free algorithm to solve the problem for any increasing concave user utility functions. We further develop low complexity algorithms for the commonly used logarithmic and linear utility functions. The optimal pricing scheme ensures a win-win situation for the operator and users. Simulations show that the operator can reduce the cost by up to 97.52% in the logarithmic utility case and 98.70% in the linear utility case, and users can increase their payoff by up to 79.69% and 106.10% for the two types of utilities, respectively, comparing with a time and location independent pricing benchmark. Our study suggests that the operator should provide price discounts at less crowded time slots and locations, and the discounts need to be significant when the operator's cost of provisioning excessive traffic is high or users' willingness to delay traffic is low.

On Primary Relations at Tree-level in String Theory and Field Theory

By the use of cyclic symmetry, KK relations and BCJ relations, one can reduce the number of independent $N$-point color-ordered tree amplitudes in gauge theory and string theory from $N!$ to $(N-3)!$. In this paper, we investigate these relations at tree-level in both string theory and field theory. We will show that there are two primary relations. All other relations can be generated by the primary relations. In string theory, the primary relations can be chosen as cyclic symmetry as well as either the fundamental KK relation or the fundamental BCJ relation. In field theory, the primary relations can only be chosen as cyclic symmetry and the fundamental BCJ relation. We will further show a kind of more general relation which can also be generated by the primary relations. The general formula of the explicit minimal-basis expansions for color-ordered open string tree amplitudes will be given and proven in this paper.

Disk relations for tree amplitudes in minimal coupling theory of gauge field and gravity

KLT relations on $S_2$ factorize closed string amplitudes into product of open string tree amplitudes. The field theory limits of KLT factorization relations hold in minimal coupling theory of gauge field and gravity. In this paper, we consider the field theory limits of relations on $D_2$. Though the relations on $D_2$ and KLT factorization relations hold on worldsheets with different topologies, we find the field theory limits of $D_2$ relations also hold in minimal coupling theory of gauge field and gravity. We use the $D_2$ relations to give three- and four-point tree amplitudes where gluons are minimally coupled to gravitons. We also give a discussion on general tree amplitudes for minimal coupling of gauge field and gravity. In general, any tree amplitude with $M$ gravitons in addition to $N$ gluons can be given by pure-gluon tree amplitudes with $N+2M$ legs.

Relations Between Closed String Amplitudes at Higher-order Tree Level and Open String Amplitudes

KLT relations almost factorize closed string amplitudes on $S_2$ by two open string tree amplitudes which correspond to the left- and the right- moving sectors. In this paper, we investigate string amplitudes on $D_2$ and $RP_2$. We find that KLT factorization relations do not hold in these two cases. The relations between closed and open string amplitudes have new forms. On $D_2$ and $RP_2$, the left- and the right- moving sectors are connected into a single sector. Then an amplitude with closed strings on $D_2$ or $RP_2$ can be given by one open string tree amplitude except for a phase factor. The relations depends on the topologies of the world-sheets.Under T-duality, the relations on $D_2$ and $RP_2$ give the amplitudes between closed strings scattering from D-brane and O-plane respectively by open string partial amplitudes. In the low energy limits of these two cases, the factorization relations for graviton amplitudes do not hold. The amplitudes for gravitons must be given by the new relations instead.
