Marginal Fermi liquid resonance induced by a quantum magnetic impurity in d-wave superconductors

We consider a model of an Anderson impurity embedded in a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting state to describe the low-energy excitations of cuprate superconductors doped with a small amount of magnetic impurities. Due to the Dirac-like energy dispersion, a sharp localized resonance above the Fermi energy, showing a marginal Fermi liquid behavior ($ω\ln ω$ as $ω\to 0$) is predicted for the impurity states. The same logarithmic dependence of self-energy and a linear frequency dependence of the relaxation rate are also derived for the conduction electrons, characterizing a new universality class for the strong coupling fixed point. At the resonant energies, the spatial distribution of the electron density of states around the magnetic impurity is calculated, to be confronted with measurements of the scanning tunneling microscopy on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca(Cu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)O$_{8+δ}$.

Coexisting Kondo singlet state with antiferromagnetic long-range order: A possible ground state for Kondo insulators

The ground-state phase diagram of a half-filled anisotropic Kondo lattice model is calculated within a mean-field theory. For small transverse exchange coupling $J_{\perp} J_{\perp c2}$, the long-range order is destroyed and the system is in a disordered Kondo singlet state with a hybridization gap. Both ground states can describe the low-temperature phases of Kondo insulating compounds. Between these two distinct phases, there may be a coexistent regime as a result of the balance between local Kondo screening and magnetic interactions.

Magnetic field effects on two-leg Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladders: Thermodynamic properties

Using the recently developed transfer-matrix renormalization group method, we have studied the thermodynamic properties of two-leg antiferromagnetic ladders in the magnetic field. Based on different behavior of magnetization, we found disordered spin liquid, Luttinger liquid, spin-polarized phases and a classical regime depending on magnetic field and temperature. Our calculations in Luttinger liquid regime suggest that both the divergence of the NMR relaxation rate and the anomalous specific heat behavior observed on Cu$_2$(C$_5$H$_{12}$N$_2$)$_2$Cl$_4$}are due to quasi-one-dimensional effect rather than three-dimensional ordering.

Kondo spin liquid and magnetically long-range ordered states in the Kondo necklace model

A simplified version of the symmetric Kondo lattice model, the Kondo necklace model, is studied by using a representation of impurity and conduction electron spins in terms of local Kondo singlet and triplet operators. Within a mean field theory, a spin gap always appears in the spin triplet excitation spectrum in 1D, leading to a Kondo spin liquid state for any finite values of coupling strength $t/J$ (with $t$ as hopping and $J$ as exchange); in 2D and 3D cubic lattices the spin gaps are found to vanish continuously around $(t/J)_c\approx 0.70$ and $(t/J)_c\approx 0.38$, respectively, where quantum phase transitions occur and the Kondo spin liquid state changes into an antiferromagnetically long-range ordered state. These results are in agreement with variational Monte Carlo, higher-order series expansion, and recent quantum Monte Carlo calculations for the symmetric Kondo lattice model

Logarithmic corrections from ferromagnetic impurity ending bonds of open antiferromagnetic host chains

We analyze the logarithmic corrections due to ferromagnetic impurity ending bonds of open spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic chains, using the density matrix renormalization group technique. A universal finite size scaling $\sim {\frac 1 {L \log L}}$ for impurity contributions in the quasi-degenerate ground state energy is demonstrated for a zigzag spin 1/2 chain at the critical next nearest neighbor coupling and the standard Heisenberg spin 1/2 chain, in the long chain limit. Using an exact solution for the latter case it is argued that one can extract the impurity contributions to the entropy and specific heat from the scaling analysis. It is also shown that a pure spin 3/2 open Heisenberg chain belongs to the same universality class.

Two-channel Kondo model as a generalized one-dimensional inverse square long-range Haldane-Shastry spin model

Majorana fermion representations of the algebra associated with spin, charge, and flavor currents have been used to transform the two-channel Kondo Hamiltonian. Using a path integral formulation, we derive a reduced effective action with long-range impurity spin-spin interactions at different imaginary times. In the semiclassical limit, it is equivalent to a one-dimensional Heisenberg spin chain with two-spin, three-spin, etc. long-range interactions, as a generalization of the inverse-square long-range Haldane-Shastry spin model. In this representation the elementary excitations are "semions", and the non-Fermi-liquid low-energy properties of the two-channel Kondo model are recovered.

Gauge field theory of transport and magnetic relaxation in underdoped cuprates

Based on recently proposed U(1)xSU(2) Chern-Simons gauge field theory, an interpretation of the transport and magnetic relaxation properties of underdoped cuprates is proposed, taking into account the short range antiferromagnetic order. The interplay of the doping-dependent spin gap (explicitly derived by us) effect and dissipation due to gauge fluctuations gives rise to a crossover from metallic to insulating behavior of conductivity as temperature decreases, in semi-quantitative agreement with experimental data. For the same reason the magnetic relaxation rate shows a maximum nearby. Various crossover temperatures related to spin gap effects are shown to be different manifestations of the same energy scale.

Heisenberg Spin-One Chain in Staggered Magnetic Field : A Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study

Using the density matrix renormalization group technique, we calculate numerically the low energy excitation spectrum and magnetization curve of the spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain in a staggered magnetic field, which is expected to describe the physics of $R_2 Ba Ni O_5 (R \neq Y) $ family below the Néel temperature of the magnetic rare-earth ($R$) sublattice. These results are valid in the entire range of the staggered field, and agree with those given by the non-linear $σ$ model study for small fields, but differ from the latter for large fields. They are consistent with the available experimental data. The correlation functions for this model are also calculated. The transverse correlations display the anticipated exponential decay with shorter correlation length, while the longitudinal correlations show explicitly the induced staggered magnetization.

The Haldane gap for the S=2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain revisited

Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, we carry out a large scale numerical calculation for the S=2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. Performing systematic scaling analysis for both the chain length $L$ and the number of optimal states kept in the iterations $m$, the Haldane gap $Δ(2)$ is estimated accurately as $(0.0876\pm0.0013)J$. Our systematic analysis for the S=2 chains not only ends the controversies arising from various DMRG calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, but also sheds light on how to obtain reliable results from the DMRG calculations for other complicated systems.

Bond-versus-site doping models for off-chain-doped Haldane-gap system Y$_2$ Ba Ni O$_5$

Using the density matrix renormalization-group technique, we calculate the impurity energy levels for two different effective models of off-chain doping for quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg chain compound Y$_2$ Ba Ni O$_5$: ferromagnetic bond doping and antiferromagnetic site spin-1/2 doping. Thresholds of the impurity strength for the appearance of localized states are found for both models. However, the ground-state and low-energy excitations for weak impurity strength are different for these two models and the difference can be detected by experiments.

Anomalous Resonance of the Symmetric Single-Impurity Anderson Model in the Presence of Pairing Fluctuations

We consider the symmetric single-impurity Anderson model in the presence of pairing fluctuations. In the isotropic limit, the degrees of freedom of the local impurity are separated into hybridizing and non-hybridizing modes. The self-energy for the hybridizing modes can be obtained exactly, leading to two subbands centered at $\pm U/2$. For the non-hybridizing modes, the second order perturbation yields a singular resonance of the marginal Fermi liquid form. By multiplicative renomalization, the self-energy is derived exactly, showing the resonance is pinned at the Fermi level, while its strength is weakened by renormalization.

U(1)xSU(2) Chern--Simons gauge theory of underdoped cuprate superconductors

The Chern-Simons bosonization with U(1)xSU(2) gauge field is applied to 2-D t-J model in the limit t >> J, to study the normal state properties of underdoped cuprate superconductors. We prove the existence of an upper bound on the partition function for holons in a spinon background, and we find the optimal spinon configuration saturating the upper bound on average--a coexisting flux phase and s+id-like RVB state. After neglecting the feedback of holon fluctuations on the U(1) field B and spinon fluctuations on the SU(2) field V, the holon field is a fermion and the spinon field is a hard--core boson. We show that the B field produces a πflux phase for holons, converting them into Dirac--like fermions, while the V field, taking into account the feedback of holons produces a gap for spinons vanishing in zero doping limit. The nonlinear sigma-model with a mass term describes the crossover from short-ranged antiferromagnetic (AF) state in doped samples to long range AF order in reference compounds. Moreover, we derive a low--energy effective action in terms of spinons, holons and a self-generated U(1) gauge field. The gauge fluctuations are not confining due to coupling to holons, but yield an attractive interaction between spinons and holons leading to a bound state with electron quantum numbers. The renormalisation effects due to gauge fluctuations give rise to non--Fermi liquid behaviour for the composite electron. This formalism provides a new interpretation of the spin gap in underdoped superconductors (due to short-ranged AF order) and predicts the minimal gap for the physical electron is proportional to the square root of the doping concentration.

$U(1)\times SU(2)$ gauge theory of underdoped cuprate superconductors

The $U(1)\times SU(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge theory is applied to study the 2-D $t-J$ model describing the normal state of underdoped cuprate superconductors. The U(1) field produces a flux phase for holons converting them into Dirac-like fermions, while the SU(2) field, due to the coupling to holons gives rise to a gap for spinons. An effective low-energy action involving holons, spinons and a self-generated U(1) gauge field is derived. The Fermi surface and electron spectral function obtained are consistent with photoemission experiments. The theory predicts a minimal gap proportional to doping concentration. It also explains anomalous transport properties including linear $T$ dependence of the in-plane resistivity.

Zero Modes and Thermodynamics of Disordered Spin-1/2 Ladders

The influence of nonmagnetic doping on the thermodynamic properties of two-leg S = 1/2 spin ladders is studied in this paper. It is shown that, for a weak interchain coupling, the problem can be mapped onto a model of random mass Dirac (Majorana) fermions. We investigate in detail the structure of the fermionic states localized at an individual mass kink (zero modes) in the framework of a generalized Dirac model. The low-temperature thermodynamic properties are dominated by these zero modes. We use the single-fermion density of states, known to exhibit the Dyson singularity in the zero-energy limit, to construct the thermodynamics of the spin ladder. In particular, we find that the magnetic susceptibility $χ$ diverges at $T\to 0$ as $1/T\ln^2(1/T)$, and the specific heat behaves as $C\propto 1/\ln^3(1/T)$. The predictions on magnetic susceptibility are consistent with the most recent results of quantum Monte Carlo simulations on doped ladders with randomly distributed impurities. We also calculate the average staggered magnetic susceptibility induced in the system by such defects.

Impurity in a Luttinger liquid away from half-filling: a numerical study

Conformal field theory gives quite detailed predictions for the low energy spectrum and scaling exponents of a massless Luttinger liquid at generic filling in the presence of an impurity. While these predictions were verified for half-filled systems, there was till now no analysis away from this particular filling. Here, we fill in this gap by numerically investigating a quarter-filled system using the density matrix renormalization group technique. Our results confirm conformal field theory predictions, and suggest that they are indeed valid for arbitrary fillings.

The Fermi surface of underdoped high-T_c superconducting cuprates

The coexistence of $π$-flux state and d-wave RVB state is considered in this paper within the slave boson approach. A critical value of doping concentration $δ_c$ is found, below which the coexisting $π$-flux and d-wave RVB state is favored in energy. The pseudo Fermi surface of spinons and the physical electron spectral function are calculated. A clear Fermi-level crossing is found along the (0,0) to ($π$, $π$) direction, but no such crossing is detected along the ($π$, 0) to ($π$, $π$) direction. Also, an energy gap of d-wave symmetry appears at the Fermi level in our calculation. The above results are in agreement with the angle-resolved photoemission experiments which indicate at a d-wave pseudo-gap and a half-pocket-like Fermi surface in underdoped cuprates.

Finite Size Scaling for Low Energy Excitations in Integer Heisenberg Spin Chains

In this paper we study the finite size scaling for low energy excitations of $S=1$ and $S=2$ Heisenberg chains, using the density matrix renormalization group technique. A crossover from $1/L$ behavior (with $L$ as the chain length) for medium chain length to $1/L^2$ scaling for long chain length is found for excitations in the continuum band as the length of the open chain increases. Topological spin $S=1/2$ excitations are shown to give rise to the two lowest energy states for both open and periodic $S=1$ chains. In periodic chains these two excitations are ``confined'' next to each other, while for open chains they are two free edge 1/2 spins. The finite size scaling of the two lowest energy excitations of open $S=2$ chains is determined by coupling the two free edge $S=1$ spins. The gap and correlation length for $S=2$ open Heisenberg chains are shown to be 0.082 (in units of the exchange $J$) and 47, respectively.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior in an extended Anderson model

An extended Anderson model, including screening channels (non-hybridizing, but interacting with the local orbit), is studied within the Anderson-Yuval approach, originally devised for the single-channel Kondo problem. By comparing the perturbation expansions of this model and a generalized resonant level model, the spin-spin correlation functions are calculated which show non-Fermi liquid exponent depending on the strength of the scattering potential. The relevance of this result to experiments in some heavy fermion systems is briefly discussed.
