Impurity in a Luttinger liquid: a numerical study of the finite size energy spectrum and of the orthogonality catastrophe exponent

The behavior of a single impurity in a one-dimensional Luttinger liquid is numerically investigated by means of the density matrix renormalization group. By analyzing the finite size scaling behavior of the low energy spectrum, we confirm the theoretical prediction of Kane and Fisher [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 68}, 1220 (1992)] both for attractive and repulsive interactions. Moreover, we calculate the exponent of the orthogonality catastrophe, which gives a further support to the above theoretical prediction.

Dimensional reduction of U(1)\times SU(2) Chern-Simons bosonization: application to the t-J model

We perform a dimensional reduction of the $U(1)\times SU(2)$ Chern--Simons bosonization and apply it to the $t-J$ model, relevant for high $T_c$ superconductors. This procedure yields a decomposition of the electron field into a product of two ``semionic" fields, i.e. fields obeying abelian braid statistics with statistics parameter $θ={1\over 4}$, one carrying the charge and the other the spin degrees of freedom. A mean field theory is then shown to reproduce correctly the large distance behaviour of the correlation functions of the 1D $t-J$ model at $t>>J$. This result shows that to capture the essential physical properties of the model one needs a specific ``semionic" form of spin--charge separation.

Universality class of non-Fermi liquid behavior in mixed valence systems

A generalized Anderson single-impurity model with off-site Coulomb interactions is derived from the extended three-band Hubbard model, originally proposed to describe the physics of the copper-oxides. Using the abelian bosonization technique and canonical transformations, an effective Hamiltonian is derived in the strong coupling limit, which is essentially analogous to the Toulouse limit of the ordinary Kondo problem. In this limit, the effective Hamiltonian can be exactly solved, with a mixed valence quantum critical point separating two different Fermi liquid phases, {\it i.e.} the Kondo phase and the empty orbital phase. In the mixed valence quantum critical regime, the local moment is only partially quenched and X-ray edge singularities are generated. Around the quantum critical point, a new type of non-Fermi liquid behavior is predicted with an extra specific heat $C_{imp}\sim T^{1/4}$ and a singular spin-susceptibility $χ_{imp}\sim T^{-3/4}$. At the same time, the effective Hamiltonian under single occupancy is transformed into a resonant-level model, from which the correct Kondo physical properties (specific heat, spin susceptibility, and an enhanced Wilson ratio) are easily rederived. Finally, a brief discussion is given to relate these theoretical results to observations in $UPd_xCu_{5-x}$ ($x=1,1.5$) alloys, which show single-impurity critical behavior consistent with our predictions.

Impurity Energy Level Within The Haldane Gap

An impurity bond $J{'}$ in a periodic 1D antiferromagnetic, spin 1 chain with exchange $J$ is considered. Using the numerical density matrix renormalization group method, we find an impurity energy level in the Haldane gap, corresponding to a bound state near the impurity bond. When $J{'} J$. The impurity level appears only when the deviation $dev=(J{'}-J)/J{'}$ is greater than $B_{c}$, which is near 0.3 in our calculation.

Quantum fluctuations of $D_{5d}$ polarons on $C_{60}$ molecules

The dynamic Jahn-Teller splitting of the six equivalent $D_{5d}$ polarons due to quantum fluctuations is studied in the framework of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. The tunneling induced level splittings are determined to be $^2 T_{1u} \bigoplus ^2 T_{2u}$ and $^1 A_g \bigoplus ^1 H_g$ for $C_{60}^{1-}$ and $C_{60}^{2-}$, respectively, which should give rise to observable effects in experiments.

Asymptotically exact solution of a local copper-oxide model

We present an asymptotically exact solution of a local copper-oxide model abstracted from the multi-band models. The phase diagram is obtained through the renormalization-group analysis of the partition function. In the strong coupling regime, we find an exactly solved line, which crosses the quantum critical point of the mixed valence regime separating two different Fermi-liquid (FL) phases. At this critical point, a many-particle resonance is formed near the chemical potential, and a marginal-FL spectrum can be derived for the spin and charge susceptibilities.
