Insulator-to-metal phase transition in Yb-based Kondo insulators

The periodic Anderson lattice model for the crystalline electric field (CEF)split 4f quartet states is used to describe the Yb-based Kondo insulators/semiconductors. In the slave-boson mean-field approximation, we derive the hybridized quasiparticle bands, and find that decreasing the hybridization difference of the two CEF quartets may induce an insulator-to-metal phase transition. The resulting metallic phase has a hole and an electron Fermi pockets. Such a phase transition may be realized experimentally by applying pressure, reducing the difference in hybridization of the two CEF quartets.

Kondo screening coexisting with ferromagnetic order as a possible ground state for Kondo lattice systems

We consider the competition between the Kondo screening effect and ferromagnetic long-range order (FLRO) within a mean-field theory of the Kondo lattice model for low conduction electron densities $n_{c}$. Depending on the parameter values, several types of FLRO ground states are found. When $n_{c}<0.16$, a polarized FLRO phase is dominant. For $0.16<n_{c}<0.82$, a non-polarized FLRO phase appears in the weak Kondo coupling region; while in the intermediate coupling region the ground state corresponds to the polarized and non-polarized FLRO phases, respectively, coexisting with the Kondo screening. For a strong Kondo coupling, the product of pure Kondo singlets is the ground state. Moreover, we also find that a weak magnetic field makes the pure Kondo singlet phase vanish, while the non-polarized FLRO state with the Kondo screening spans a large area in the phase diagram.

Spin transport properties of a quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads with noncollinear magnetizations

A correct general formula for the spin current through an interacting quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads with magnetization at an arbitrary angle $θ$ is derived within the framework of the Keldysh formalism. Under asymmetric conditions, the spin current component J_{z} may change sign for $0<θ<π$. It is shown that the spin current and spin tunneling magnetoresistance exhibit different angle dependence in the free and Coulomb blockade regimes. In the latter case, the competition of spin precession and the spin-valve effect could lead to an anomaly in the angle dependence of the spin current.

Mott insulating phases and quantum phase transitions of interacting spin-3/2 fermionic cold atoms in optical lattices at half filling

We study various Mott insulating phases of interacting spin-3/2 fermionic ultracold atoms in two-dimensional square optical lattices at half filling. Using a generalized one-band Hubbard model with hidden SO(5) symmetry, we identify two distinct symmetry breaking phases: the degenerate antiferromagnetic spin-dipole/spin-octupole ordering and spin-quadrupole ordering, depending on the sign of the spin-dependent interaction. These two competing orders exhibit very different symmetry properties, low energy excitations and topological characterizations. Near the SU(4) symmetric point, a quantum critical state with a $π$-flux phase may emerge due to strong quantum fluctuations, leading to spin algebraic correlations and gapless excitations.

Spin-quadrupole ordering of spin-3/2 ultracold fermionic atoms in optical lattices in the one-band Hubbard model

Based on a generalized one-band Hubbard model, we study magnetic properties of Mott insulating states for ultracold spin-3/2 fermionic atoms in optical lattices. When the \textit{s}-wave scattering lengths for the total spin $S=2,0$ satisfy conditions $a_{2}>a_{0}>0$, we apply a functional integral approach to the half filled case, where the spin-quadrupole fluctuations dominate. On a 2D square lattice, the saddle point solution yields a staggered spin-quadrupole ordering at zero temperature with symmetry breaking from SO(5) to SO(4). Both spin and spin-quadrupole static structure factors are calculated, displaying highly anisotropic spin antiferromagnetic fluctuations and antiferroquadrupole long-range correlations, respectively. When Gaussian fluctuations around the saddle point are taken into account, spin-quadrupole density waves with a linear dispersion are derived. Compared with the spin density waves in the half filled spin-1/2 Hubbard model, the quadrupole density wave velocity is saturated in the strong-coupling limit, and there are no transverse spin-quadrupole mode couplings, as required by the SO(4) invariance of the effective action. Finally, in the strong-coupling limit of the model Hamiltonian, we derive the effective hyperfine spin-exchange interactions for the Mott insulating phases in the quarter filled and half filled cases, respectively.

Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders in a staggered magnetic field

We study the low-energy excitations of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain and $N$-leg ($N$=2, 3, 4) ladders in a staggered magnetic field $h_s$. We show that $h_s$ induces gap and midgap states in all the cases and examine their field scaling behavior. A modified boundary scheme is devised to extract accurate bulk excitation behavior. The gap values converge rapidly as $N$ increases, leading to a field scaling exponent $γ=1/2$ for both the longitudinal and transverse gaps of the square lattice ($N \to \infty$). The midgap states induced by the boundary edge effects share the bulk gap scaling exponents but their overall scaling behavior in the large-N limit needs further investigation.

Midgap States in Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains with A Staggered Field

We study low-energy excitations in antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with a staggered field which splits the spectrum into a longitudinal and a transverse branch. Bound states are found to exist inside the field induced gap in both branches. They originate from the edge effects and are inherent to spin-chain materials. The sine-Gordon scaling $h_s^{2/3}|\log h_s|^{1/6}$ ($h_s$: the staggered field) provides an accurate description for the gap and midgap energies in the transverse branch for $S=1/2$ and the midgap energies in both branches for $S=3/2$ over a wide range of magnetic field; however, it can fit other low-energy excitations only at much lower field. Moreover, the integer-spin S=1 chain displays scaling behavior that does not fit this scaling law. These results reveal intriguing features of magnetic excitations in spin-chain materials that deserve further investigation.

Spin and quadruple correlations in the insulating nematic phase of spin-1 bosons on optical lattices

We consider the effective model of $H=-J_{1}\sum_{ }\mathbf{S}_{i}\cdot \mathbf{S}_{j}-J_{2}\sum_{ }(\mathbf{S}_{i}\cdot \mathbf{S}_{j}) ^{2}$, describing the Mott insulating phase with odd number of spin-1 bosons in optical lattices ($J_{2}>J_{1}>0$). In terms of an SU(3) boson representation, a valence bond mean field theory is developed. In 1D, a \textit{first-order} quantum phase transition from a spin singlet to a spin nematic phase with \textit{gapful} excitations is identified at $ J_{1}/J_{2}=0.19833$, while on a 2D square lattice a spin nematic ordered phase with gapless excitations prevails. In both 1D and 2D cases, we predict that the spin structure factor displays dominant antiferromagnetic fluctuations, while the quadrupole structure factor exhibits strong ferroquadrupolar correlations.

Local quantum critical behavior in magnetic Kondo impurity models with partially screened moment

In the strong coupling limit, an effective resonant level model is derived for the spin-1 underscreened Kondo impurity model. A local quantum critical behavior is induced by the formation of a bound state with partially screened magnetic moment, displaying a residual $Z_2$ symmetry, leading to a $δ$-resonance at the Fermi level in the impurity spectral function. As a consequence, a logarithmic singularity appears in the real part of the impurity dynamic spin susceptibility as a function of $\max (ω, T)$, with $ω$ as frequency, $T$ temperature. A small magnetic field breaks this $Z_2$ symmetry and suppresses the singularity. We also discuss the possible manifestation of such a quantum critical behavior in the spin-1/2 two Kondo impurity model and the single quantum dot system with even electron occupation.

Valence bond spin liquid state in two-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Fermionic valence bond approach in terms of SU(4) representation is proposed to describe the $J_{1}-J_{2}$ frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (AF) model on a {\it bipartite} square lattice. A uniform mean field solution without breaking the translational and rotational symmetries describes a valence bond spin liquid state, interpolating the two different AF ordered states in the large $J_{1}$ and large $J_{2}$ limits, respectively. This novel spin liquid state is gapless with the vanishing density of states at the Fermi nodal points. Moreover, a sharp resonance peak in the dynamic structure factor is predicted for momenta ${\bf q}=(0,0)$ and $(π,π)$ in the strongly frustrated limit $J_{2}/J_{1}\sim 1/2$, which can be checked by neutron scattering experiment.

Spin-orbital gapped phase with least symmetry breaking in the one-dimensional symmetrically coupled spin-orbital model

To describe the spin-orbital energy gap formation in the one-dimensional symmetrically coupled spin-orbital model, we propose a simple mean field theory based on an SU(4) constraint fermion representation of spins and orbitals. A spin-orbital gapped phase is formed due to a marginally relevant spin-orbital valence bond pairing interaction. The energy gap of the spin and orbital excitations grows extremely slowly from the SU(4) symmetric point up to a maximum value and then decreases rapidly. By calculating the spin, orbital, and spin-orbital tensor static susceptibilities at zero temperature, we find a crossover from coherent to incoherent magnetic excitations as the spin-orbital coupling decreasing from large to small values.

Convergence of energy-dependent incommensurate antiferromagnetic neutron scattering peaks to commensurate resonance in underdoped bilayer cuprates

The recently discovered coexistence of incommensurate antiferromagnetic neutron scattering peaks and commensurate resonance in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ is calling for an explanation. Within the t-J model, the doping and energy dependence of the spin dynamics of the underdoped bilayer cuprates in the normal state is studied based on the fermion-spin theory by considering the bilayer interactions. Incommensurate peaks are found at $[(1\pmδ)π,π] $ and $[π,(1\pmδ)π]$ at low energies with $δ$ initially increasing with doping at low dopings and then saturating at higher dopings. These incommensurate peaks are suppressed, and the parameter $δ$ is reduced with increasing energy. Eventually it converges to the $[π,π]$ resonance peak. Thus the recently observed coexistence is interpreted in terms of bilayer interactions.

Interplay of quantum magnetic and potential scattering around Zn or Ni impurity ions in superconducting cuprates

To describe the scattering of superconducting quasiparticles from non-magnetic (Zn) or magnetic (Ni) impurities in optimally doped high T$_c$ cuprates, we propose an effective Anderson model Hamiltonian of a localized electron hybridizing with $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave BCS type superconducting quasiparticles with an attractive scalar potential at the impurity site. Due to the strong local antiferromagnetic couplings between the original Cu ions and their nearest neighbors, the localized electron in the Ni-doped materials is assumed to be on the impurity sites, while in the Zn-doped materials the localized electron is distributed over the four nearest neighbor sites of the impurities with a dominant $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetric form of the wave function. With Ni impurities, two resonant states are formed above the Fermi level in the local density of states at the impurity site, while for Zn impurities a sharp resonant peak below the Fermi level dominates in the local density of states at the Zn site, accompanied by a small and broad resonant state above the Fermi level mainly induced by the potential scattering. In both cases, there are no Kondo screening effects. The local density of states and their spatial distribution at the dominant resonant energy around the substituted impurities are calculated for both cases, and they are in good agreement with the experimental results of scanning tunneling microscopy in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ with Zn or Ni impurities, respectively.

Field-induced gap in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain: A density matrix renormalization group study

We study the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in both uniform and (perpendicular) staggered magnetic fields using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. This model has been shown earlier to describe the physics of the copper benzoate materials in magnetic field. In the present work, we extend the study to more general case for a systematic investigation of the field-induced gap and related properties of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. In particular, we explore the high magnetic field regime where interesting behaviors in the field-induced gap, magnetization, and spin correlation functions are found. Careful examination of the low energy properties and magnetization reveals interesting competing effects of the staggered and uniform fields. The incommensurate behavior in the spin correlation functions is demonstrated and discussed in detail. The present work reproduces earlier results in good agreement with experimental data on copper benzoate and predicts new interesting field-induced features at very high magnetic field.

Doping and temperature dependence of incommensurate antiferromagnetism in underdoped lanthanum cuprates

The doping, temperature and energy dependence of the dynamical spin structure factors of the underdoped lanthanum cuprates in the normal state is studied within the t-J model using the fermion-spin transformation technique. Incommensurate peaks are found at $[(1\pmδ)π,π]$, $[π,(1\pmδ)π]$ at relatively low temperatures with $δ$ linearly increasing with doping at the beginning and then saturating at higher dopings. These peaks broaden and weaken in amplitude with temperature and energy, in good agreement with experiments. The theory also predicts a rotation of these peaks by $π/4$ at even higher temperatures, being shifted to $[(1\pm δ/\sqrt{2})π,(1\pm δ/\sqrt{2})π]$.

Mesoscopic Kondo screening effect in a single-electron transistor embedded in a metallic ring

We study the Kondo screening effect generated by a single-electron transistor or quantum dot embedded in a small metallic ring. When the ring circumference $L$ becomes comparable to the fundamental length scale $ξ_K^0=\hbar \upsilon _F/T_K^0$ associated with the {\it bulk} Kondo tempe the Kondo resonance is strongly affected, depending on the total number of electrons ({\it modulo} 4) and magnetic flux threading the ring. The resulting Kondo-assisted persistent currents are also calculated in both Kondo and mixed valence regimes, and the maximum values are found in the crossover region.

Metal-insulator crossover in superconducting cuprates in strong magnetic fields

The metal-insulator crossover of the in-plane resistivity upon temperature decrease, recently observed in several classes of cuprate superconductors, when a strong magnetic field suppresses the superconductivity, is explained using the $U(1)\times SU(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge field theory. The origin of this crossover is the same as that for a similar phenomenon observed in heavily underdoped cuprates without magnetic field. It is due to the interplay between the diffusive motion of the charge carriers and the ``peculiar'' localization effect due to short-range antiferromagnetic order. We also calculate the in-plane transverse magnetoresistance which is in a fairly good agreement with available experimental data.

Two-channel Kondo Lattice Model on a ladder studied by the Density Matrix Renormalization Group Method

Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method we study a two-channel Kondo lattice model on a half filled ladder. Our model involves an on-site s-wave and a nearest neighbor d-wave coupling between the local moments and the conduction electrons on the ladder. By changing the relative strength of the two Kondo interactions we examine the evolution of the system from a conventional Kondo insulator with a singlet at each site to a new kind of semimetallic state formed by overlapping of Zhang-Rice-like singlets. The DMRG is used to study how the spin and charge correlation functions evolve between these two regimes.
