High-Order Implicit Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Method for the Boltzmann Equation

The high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method combining with an implicit iterative scheme is used to find the steady-state solution of the Boltzmann equation with full collision integral on two-dimensional triangular meshes. The velocity distribution function and its trace are approximated in the piecewise polynomial space of degree up to 4. The fast spectral method (FSM) is incorporated into the DG discretization to evaluate the collision operator. Specific polynomial approximation is proposed for the collision term to reduce the computational cost. The proposed scheme is proved to be accurate and efficient.

Probing bino-wino coannihilation dark matter under the neutrino floor at the LHC

In the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) the bino-wino coannihilation provides a feasible way to accommodate the observed cosmological dark matter (DM) relic density. However, such a scenario usually predicts a very small DM-nucleon scattering cross section that is below the neutrino floor, and can not be tested by DM direct detection experiments. In this work, we investigate the discovery potential of this bino-wino co-annihilation region by searching for the soft dilepton events from the process $pp \to χ^0_2 (\to \ell^+\ell^- χ^0_1) χ^\pm_1+jets$ at the LHC. We find that the mass of the wino-like $χ^0_2$ can be probed up to about 310 (230) GeV at $2σ$ ($5σ$) level for an integrated luminosity ${\cal L}=300$ fb$^{-1}$. In the future HL-LHC with 3000 fb$^{-1}$ luminosity, the corresponding mass limits can be pushed up to 430 (330) GeV.

Boundary Layer of Transport Equation with In-Flow Boundary

Consider the steady neutron transport equation in 2D convex domains with in-flow boundary condition. In this paper, we establish the diffusive limit while the boundary layers are present. Our contribution relies on a delicate decomposition of boundary data to separate the regular and singular boundary layers, novel weighted $W^{1,\infty}$ estimates for the Milne problem with geometric correction in convex domains, as well as an $L^{2m}-L^{\infty}$ framework which yields stronger remainder estimates.

Boundary Layer of Boltzmann Equation in 2D Convex Domains

Consider the stationary Boltzmann equation in 2D convex domains with diffusive boundary condition. In this paper, we establish the hydrodynamic limits while the boundary layers are present, and derive the steady Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with non-slip boundary conditions. Our contribution focuses on novel weighted $W^{1,\infty}$ estimates for the Milne problem with geometric correction. Also, we develop stronger remainder estimates based on an $L^{2m}-L^{\infty}$ framework.

Lepton-portal Dark Matter in Hidden Valley model and the DAMPE recent results

We study the recent $e^\pm$ cosmic ray excess reported by DAMPE in a Hidden Valley Model with lepton-portal dark matter. We find the electron-portal can account for the excess well and satisfy the DM relic density and direct detection bounds, while electron+muon/electron+muon+tau-portal suffers from strong constraints from lepton flavor violating observables, such as $μ\to 3 e$. We also discuss possible collider signatures of our model, both at the LHC and a future 100 TeV hadron collider.

Asymptotic Analysis of Unsteady Neutron Transport Equation

Consider the unsteady neutron transport equation with diffusive boundary condition in 2D convex domains. We establish the diffusive limit with both initial layer and boundary layer corrections. The major difficulty is the lack of regularity in the boundary layer with geometric correction. Our contribution relies on a detailed analysis of asymptotic expansions inspired by the compatibility condition and an intricate $L^{2m}-L^{\infty}$ framework which yields stronger remainder estimates.

Exotic Lepton Searches via Bound State Production at the LHC

Heavy long-lived multi-charged leptons (MCLs) are predicted by various new physics models. These hypothetical MCLs can form bound states, due to their high electric charges and long life times. In this work, we propose a novel strategy of searching for MCLs through their bound state productions and decays. By utilizing LHC-8 TeV data in searching for resonances in the diphoton channel, we exclude the masses of isospin singlet heavy leptons with electric charge $|q|\geq 6$ (in units of electron charge) lower than $\sim$1.2 TeV, which are much stronger than the corresponding 8 TeV LHC bounds from analysing the high ionisation and the long time-of-flight of MCLs. By utilising the current 13 TeV LHC diphoton channel measurements the bound can further exclude MCL masses up to $\sim$1.6 TeV for $|q|\geq 6$. Also, we demonstrate that the conventional LHC limits from searching for MCLs produced via Drell-Yan processes can be enhanced by including the contribution of photon fusion processes.

Leptophilic dark matter in gauged $U(1)_{L_e-L_μ}$ model in light of DAMPE cosmic ray $e^+ + e^-$ excess

Motivated by the very recent cosmic-ray electron+positron excess observed by DAMPE collaboration, we investigate a Dirac fermion dark matter (DM) in the gauged $L_e - L_μ$ model. DM interacts with the electron and muon via the $U(1)_{e-μ}$ gauge boson $Z^{'}$. The model can explain the DAMPE data well. Although a non-zero DM-nucleon cross section is only generated at one loop level and there is a partial cancellation between $Z^{'}ee$ and $Z^{'}μμ$ couplings, we find that a large portion of $Z^{'}$ mass is ruled out from direct DM detection limit leaving the allowed $Z^{'}$ mass to be close to two times of the DM mass. Implications for $pp \to Z^{'} \to 2\ell$ and $pp \to 2\ell + Z^{'}$ , and muon $g-2$ anomaly are also studied.

A high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method with fast convergence to steady-state solutions of the gas kinetic equation

The mass flow rate of Poiseuille flow of rarefied gas through long ducts of two-dimensional cross-sections with arbitrary shape are critical in the pore-network modeling of gas transport in porous media. In this paper, for the first time, the high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method is used to find the steady-state solution of the linearized Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook equation on two-dimensional triangular meshes. The velocity distribution function and its traces are approximated in the piecewise polynomial space (of degree up to 4) on the triangular meshes and the mesh skeletons, respectively. By employing a numerical flux that is derived from the first-order upwind scheme and imposing its continuity on the mesh skeletons, global systems for unknown traces are obtained with a few coupled degrees of freedom. To achieve fast convergence to the steady-state solution, a diffusion-type equation for flow velocity that is asymptotic-preserving into the fluid dynamic limit is solved by the HDG simultaneously, on the same meshes. The proposed HDG-synthetic iterative scheme is proved to be accurate and efficient. Specifically, for flows in the near-continuum regime, numerical simulations have shown that, to achieve the same level of accuracy, our scheme could be faster than the conventional iterative scheme by two orders of magnitude, while it is faster than the synthetic iterative scheme based on the finite difference discretization in the spatial space by one order of magnitude. The HDG-synthetic iterative scheme is ready to be extended to simulate rarefied gas mixtures and the Boltzmann collision operator.

Irreversible Samplers from Jump and Continuous Markov Processes

In this paper, we propose irreversible versions of the Metropolis Hastings (MH) and Metropolis adjusted Langevin algorithm (MALA) with a main focus on the latter. For the former, we show how one can simply switch between different proposal and acceptance distributions upon rejection to obtain an irreversible jump sampler (I-Jump). The resulting algorithm has a simple implementation akin to MH, but with the demonstrated benefits of irreversibility. We then show how the previously proposed MALA method can also be extended to exploit irreversible stochastic dynamics as proposal distributions in the I-Jump sampler. Our experiments explore how irreversibility can increase the efficiency of the samplers in different situations.

Understanding and Enhancing the Transferability of Adversarial Examples

State-of-the-art deep neural networks are known to be vulnerable to adversarial examples, formed by applying small but malicious perturbations to the original inputs. Moreover, the perturbations can \textit{transfer across models}: adversarial examples generated for a specific model will often mislead other unseen models. Consequently the adversary can leverage it to attack deployed systems without any query, which severely hinder the application of deep learning, especially in the areas where security is crucial. In this work, we systematically study how two classes of factors that might influence the transferability of adversarial examples. One is about model-specific factors, including network architecture, model capacity and test accuracy. The other is the local smoothness of loss function for constructing adversarial examples. Based on these understanding, a simple but effective strategy is proposed to enhance transferability. We call it variance-reduced attack, since it utilizes the variance-reduced gradient to generate adversarial example. The effectiveness is confirmed by a variety of experiments on both CIFAR-10 and ImageNet datasets.

Simplified TeV leptophilic dark matter in light of DAMPE data

Using a simplified framework, we attempt to explain the recent DAMPE cosmic $e^+ + e^-$ flux excess by leptophilic Dirac fermion dark matter (LDM). The scalar ($Φ_0$) and vector ($Φ_1$) mediator fields connecting LDM and Standard Model particles are discussed. Under constraints of DM relic density, gamma-rays, cosmic-rays and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), we find that the couplings $P \otimes S$, $P \otimes P$, $V \otimes A$ and $V \otimes V$ can produce the right bump in $e^+ + e^-$ flux for a DM mass around 1.5 TeV with a natural thermal annihilation cross-section $<σv> \sim 3 \times 10^{-26} cm^3/s$ today. Among them, $V \otimes V$ coupling is tightly constrained by PandaX-II data (although LDM-nucleus scattering appears at one-loop level) and the surviving samples appear in the resonant region, $m_{Φ_1} \simeq 2m_χ$. We also study the related collider signatures, such as dilepton production $pp \to Φ_1 \to \ell^+\ell^-$, and muon $g-2$ anomaly. Finally, we present a possible $U(1)_X$ realization for such leptophilic dark matter.

Central-edge asymmetry as a probe of Higgs-top coupling in $t\bar{t}h$ production at LHC

The Higgs-top coupling plays a central role in the hierarchy problem and the vacuum stability of the Standard Model (SM). We propose a central-edge asymmetry ($A_{CE}$) to probe the CP violating Higgs-top coupling in dileptonic channel of $t\bar{t}h(\to b\bar{b})$ production at the LHC. We demonstrate that the CP-violating Higgs-top coupling can affect the central-edge asymmetry through distorting $Δy_{\ell^+\ell^-}$ distribution because of the contribution of new top charge asymmetric term. Since $Δy_{\ell^+\ell^-}$ distribution is frame-independent and has a good discrimination even in boosted regime, we use the jet substructure technique to enhance the observability of the dileptonic channel of $t\bar{t}h$ production. We find that (1) the significance of dileptonic channel of $t\bar{t}h$ production can reach $5σ$ for CP phase $ξ=0,π/4,π/2$ when the luminosity ${\cal L}=795,993,1276$ fb$^{-1}$ at 14 TeV LHC. (2) the central-edge asymmetry $A_{CE}$ show a good discrimination power of CP phase of $t\bar{t}h$ interaction, which are -40.26\%, -26.60\%, -9.47\% for $ξ=0$, $π/4$, $ π/2$ respectively and are hardly affected by the event selections. Besides, by performing the binned-$χ^2$ analysis of $Δy_{\ell^+\ell^-}$ distribution, we find that the scalar and pseudo-scalar interactions can be distinguished at 95\% C.L. level at 14 TeV HL-LHC.

A Fully-Distributed Asynchronous Approach for Multi-Area Coordinated Network-Constrained Unit Commitment

This paper discusses a consensus-based alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) approach to solve the multi-area coordinated network-constrained unit commitment (NCUC) problem in a distributed manner. Due to political and technical difficulties, it is neither practical nor feasible to solve the multi-area coordination problem in a centralized fashion, which requires full access to all data of individual areas. In comparison, in the proposed fully-distributed approach, local NCUC problems of individual areas can be solved independently, and only limited information is exchanged among adjacent areas for facilitating multi-area coordination. Furthermore, as traditional ADMM can only guarantee convergence for convex problems, this paper discusses several strategies to mitigate oscillations, enhance convergence performance, and derive good-enough feasible solutions, including: (i) A tie-line power flow based area coordination strategy is designed to reduce the number of global consensus variables; (ii) Different penalty parameters \r{ho} are assigned to individual consensus variables and are updated via certain rules during the iterative procedure, which would reduce the impact of initial values of \r{ho} on convergence performance; (iii) Heuristic rules are adopted to fix certain unit commitment variables for avoiding oscillations during the iterative procedure; and (iv) An asynchronous distributed strategy is studied, which solves NCUC subproblems of small areas multiple times and exchanges information with adjacent areas more frequently within one complete run of slower NCUC subproblems of large areas. Numerical cases illustrate effectiveness of the proposed asynchronous fully-distributed NCUC approach, and investigate key factors that would affect its convergence performance.

Probing GeV-scale MSSM neutralino dark matter in collider and direct detection experiments

Given the recent constraints from the dark matter (DM) direct detections, we examine a light GeV-scale (2-30 GeV) neutralino DM in the alignment limit of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). In this limit without decoupling, the heavy CP-even scalar $H$ plays the role of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson while the other scalar $h$ can be rather light so that the DM can annihilate through the $h$ resonance or into a pair of $h$ to achieve the observed relic density. With the current collider and cosmological constraints, we find that such a light neutralino DM above 6 GeV can be excluded by the XENON-1T (2017) limits while the survivied parameter space below 6 GeV can be fully covered by the future germanium-based light dark matter detections (such as CDEX), by the Higgs coupling precison measurements or by the production process $e^+e^- \to hA$ at an electron-positron collider (Higgs factory).

Effective Neural Solution for Multi-Criteria Word Segmentation

We present a simple yet elegant solution to train a single joint model on multi-criteria corpora for Chinese Word Segmentation (CWS). Our novel design requires no private layers in model architecture, instead, introduces two artificial tokens at the beginning and ending of input sentence to specify the required target criteria. The rest of the model including Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) layer and Conditional Random Fields (CRFs) layer remains unchanged and is shared across all datasets, keeping the size of parameter collection minimal and constant. On Bakeoff 2005 and Bakeoff 2008 datasets, our innovative design has surpassed both single-criterion and multi-criteria state-of-the-art learning results. To the best knowledge, our design is the first one that has achieved the latest high performance on such large scale datasets. Source codes and corpora of this paper are available on GitHub.

Dual Long Short-Term Memory Networks for Sub-Character Representation Learning

Characters have commonly been regarded as the minimal processing unit in Natural Language Processing (NLP). But many non-latin languages have hieroglyphic writing systems, involving a big alphabet with thousands or millions of characters. Each character is composed of even smaller parts, which are often ignored by the previous work. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture employing two stacked Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTMs) to learn sub-character level representation and capture deeper level of semantic meanings. To build a concrete study and substantiate the efficiency of our neural architecture, we take Chinese Word Segmentation as a research case example. Among those languages, Chinese is a typical case, for which every character contains several components called radicals. Our networks employ a shared radical level embedding to solve both Simplified and Traditional Chinese Word Segmentation, without extra Traditional to Simplified Chinese conversion, in such a highly end-to-end way the word segmentation can be significantly simplified compared to the previous work. Radical level embeddings can also capture deeper semantic meaning below character level and improve the system performance of learning. By tying radical and character embeddings together, the parameter count is reduced whereas semantic knowledge is shared and transferred between two levels, boosting the performance largely. On 3 out of 4 Bakeoff 2005 datasets, our method surpassed state-of-the-art results by up to 0.4%. Our results are reproducible, source codes and corpora are available on GitHub.

Status and prospects of light bino-higgsino dark matter in natural SUSY

Given the recent progress in dark matter direction detection experiments, we examine a light bino-higgsino dark matter (DM) scenario ($M_1<100$ GeV and $μ<300$ GeV) in natural supersymmetry with the electroweak fine tuning measure $Δ_{EW}<30$. By imposing various constraints, we note that: (i) For $sign(μ/M_1)=+1$, the parameter space allowed by the DM relic density and collider bounds can almost be excluded by the very recent spin-independent (SI) scattering cross section limits from the XENON1T (2017) experiment. (ii) For $sign(μ/M_1)=-1$, the SI limits can be evaded due to the cancelation effects in the $h\tildeχ^0_1\tildeχ^0_1$ coupling, while rather stringent constraints come from the PandaX-II (2016) spin-dependent (SD) scattering cross section limits, which can exclude the higgsino mass $|μ|$ and the LSP mass $m_{\tildeχ^0_1}$ up to about 230 GeV and 37 GeV, respectively. Furthermore, the surviving parameter space will be fully covered by the projected XENON1T experiment or the future trilepton searches at the HL-LHC.
