A multi-level parallel solver for rarefied gas flows in porous media

A high-performance gas kinetic solver using multi-level parallelization is developed to enable pore-scale simulations of rarefied flows in porous media. The Boltzmann model equation is solved by the discrete velocity method with an iterative scheme. The multi-level MPI/OpenMP parallelization is implemented with the aim to efficiently utilise the computational resources to allow direct simulation of rarefied gas flows in porous media based on digital rock images for the first time. The multi-level parallel approach is analyzed in details confirming its better performance than the commonly-used MPI processing alone for an iterative scheme. With high communication efficiency and appropriate load balancing among CPU processes, parallel efficiency of 94% is achieved for 1536 cores in the 2D simulations, and 81% for 12288 cores in the 3D simulations. While decomposition in the spatial space does not affect the simulation results, one additional benefit of this approach is that the number of subdomains can be kept minimal to avoid deterioration of the convergence rate of the iteration process. This multi-level parallel approach can be readily extended to solve other Boltzmann model equations.

An indirect probe of higgsino world at the CEPC

The higgsino world is one of the popular natural SUSY scenarios, in which $|μ| \ll M_{gauginos} \ll M_{scalars}$. As such, searching for light degenerate higgsinos becomes an essential task of testing naturalness in supersymmetry (SUSY). In this work, we study the indirect effects of light higgsinos in the process $e^+e^- \to W^+W^-$ at future Higgs factories, such as Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) in China. we find that the higgsino mass parameter $μ\lesssim 210$ GeV favored by naturalness can be covered if the accuracy of the measurement of $W^+W^-$ production can reach 0.1\% at 240 GeV CEPC.

Warped Graviton Couplings to Bulk Vectors with Brane Localised Kinetic Terms

We realize non-universal couplings between Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravitons and bulk Standard Model (SM) vectors in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model by including both UV and IR brane-localised gauge kinetic terms. We find that such kinetic terms can reduce the couplings of KK gravitons to SM gauge bosons and also ensure the KK vector masses are consistent with electroweak precision constraints.

Towards Understanding Generalization of Deep Learning: Perspective of Loss Landscapes

It is widely observed that deep learning models with learned parameters generalize well, even with much more model parameters than the number of training samples. We systematically investigate the underlying reasons why deep neural networks often generalize well, and reveal the difference between the minima (with the same training error) that generalize well and those they don't. We show that it is the characteristics the landscape of the loss function that explains the good generalization capability. For the landscape of loss function for deep networks, the volume of basin of attraction of good minima dominates over that of poor minima, which guarantees optimization methods with random initialization to converge to good minima. We theoretically justify our findings through analyzing 2-layer neural networks; and show that the low-complexity solutions have a small norm of Hessian matrix with respect to model parameters. For deeper networks, extensive numerical evidence helps to support our arguments.

Probing degenerate heavy Higgs bosons in NMSSM with vector-like particles

In this work, we investigate the degenerate heavy Higgs bosons in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) by introducing vector-like particles. Such an extension is well motivated from the top-down view since some grand unified theories usually predict the existence of singlet scalars and vector-like particles at weak scale. Under the constraints from the LHC and dark matter experiments, we find that (1) the null results of searching for high mass resonances have tightly constrained the parameter space; (2) two degenerate heavy singlet Higgs bosons $h_2$ and $a_1$ can sizably decay to $χ^0_1χ^0_1$ invisibly. Therefore, search for the monojet events through the process $gg \to h_2 / a_1 (\to χ^0_1 χ^0_1) j$ may further test our scenario at the future LHC.

A Tight Configuration-Component Based Hybrid Model for Combined-Cycle Units in MISO Day-Ahead Market

This paper proposes a hybrid CCGT model for day-ahead market clearing, in order to enhance operation flexibility of CCGTs in practice. The proposed hybrid model, by taking benefits of combined offers on configurations and individual PTs from MPs, can reflect physical operation features of CCGTs more accurately. A comprehensive review on CCGT models in literature is conducted, and their advantages and shortcomings are analyzed. The mapping relationship between the two most investigated models, i.e., CFBM and CPBM, is then revealed and constructed for deriving the proposed hybrid model. Tightening formulations are further discussed for achieving better computational performance. The proposed hybrid model is tested and compared with CFBM via an IEEE 118-bus system and the MISO system. Results show great benefits in maintaining operation flexibility and enhancing social welfare.

Resonant Higgs pair production as a probe of stop at the LHC

Searching for top squark (stop) is a crucial task of the LHC. When the flavor conserving two body decays of the stop are kinematically forbidden, the stops produced near the threshold will live long enough to form bound states which subsequently decay through annihilation into the Standard Model (SM) final states. In the region of stop mixing angle $θ_{\tilde{t}} \to 0$ or $π/2$, we note that the LHC-13 TeV diphoton resonance data can give a strong bound on the spin-$0$ stoponium ($η_{\tilde{t}}$) and exclude the constituent stop mass $m_{\tilde{t}}$ up to about 290 GeV. While in the large stop mixing region, the stoponium will dominantly decay to the Higgs pair. By analyzing the process $pp \to η_{\tilde{t}} \to h (\to b\bar{b} )h (\to τ^+τ^-)$, we find that a large portion of the parameter space on the $m_{\tilde{t}_1}$ - $θ_{\tilde{t}}$ plane can be probed at $2σ$ significance level at the LHC with the luminosity ${\cal L}=3000$ fb$^{-1}$.

Privacy-Preserving Economic Dispatch in Competitive Electricity Market

With the emerging of smart grid techniques, cyber attackers may be able to gain access to critical energy infrastructure data and strategic market participants may be able to identify offer prices of their rivals. This paper discusses a privacy-preserving economic dispatch approach in competitive electricity market, in which individual generation companies (GENCOs) and load serving entities (LSEs) can mask their actual bidding information and physical data by multiplying with random numbers before submitting to Independent System Operators (ISOs) and Regional Transmission Owners (RTOs). This would avoid potential information leakage of critical energy infrastructure and financial data of market participants. The optimal solution to the original ED problem, including optimal dispatches of generators and loads and locational marginal prices (LMPs), can be retrieved from the optimal solution of the proposed privacy-preserving ED approach. Numerical case studies show the effectiveness of the proposed approach for protecting private information of individual market participants while guaranteeing the same optimal ED solution. Computation and communication costs of the proposed privacy-preserving ED approach and the original ED are also compared in case studies.

Status of CMSSM in light of current LHC Run-2 and LUX data

Motivated by the latest results of the LHC Run-2 and LUX experiments, we examine the status of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) by performing a global fit. We construct a likelihood function including the electroweak precision observables, $B$-physics measurements, LHC Run-1 and -2 data of SUSY direct searches, Planck observation of the dark matter relic density and the combined LUX Run-3 and -4 detection limits. Based on the profile likelihood functions of 1 billion samples, we obtain the following observations: (i) The stau coannihilation region has been mostly excluded by the latest LHC Run-2 data; (ii) The focus point region has been largely covered by the LUX-2016 limits while the $A$-funnel region has been severely restricted by flavor observables like $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$. The remaining parts of both regions will be totally covered by the future LZ dark matter experiment; (iii) The masses of the stop, the lightest neutralino and the gluino have been pushed up to 1033 GeV, 449 GeV and 2285 GeV, respectively.

On the apparent permeability of porous media in rarefied gas flows

The apparent gas permeability of the porous medium is an important parameter in the prediction of unconventional gas production, which was first investigated systematically by Klinkenberg in 1941 and found to increase with the reciprocal mean gas pressure (or equivalently, the Knudsen number). Although the underlying rarefaction effects are well-known, the reason that the correction factor in Klinkenberg's famous equation decreases when the Knudsen number increases has not been fully understood. Most of the studies idealize the porous medium as a bundle of straight cylindrical tubes, however, according to the gas kinetic theory, this only results in an increase of the correction factor with the Knudsen number, which clearly contradicts Klinkenberg's experimental observations. Here, by solving the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook equation in simplified (but not simple) porous media, we identify, for the first time, two key factors that can explain Klinkenberg's experimental results: the tortuous flow path and the non-unitary tangential momentum accommodation coefficient for the gas-surface interaction. Moreover, we find that Klinkenberg's results can only be observed when the ratio between the apparent and intrinsic permeabilities is $\lesssim30$; at large ratios (or Knudsen numbers) the correction factor increases with the Knudsen number. Our numerical results could also serve as benchmarking cases to assess the accuracy of macroscopic models and/or numerical schemes for the modeling/simulation of rarefied gas flows in complex geometries over a wide range of gas rarefaction.

Comparative study of the discrete velocity and lattice Boltzmann methods for rarefied gas flows through irregular channels

Rooted from the gas kinetics, the lattice Boltzmann method is a powerful tool in modeling hydrodynamics. In the past decade, it has been extended to simulate the rarefied gas flow beyond the Navier-Stokes level, either by using the high-order Gauss-Hermite quadrature, or by introducing the relaxation time that is a function of the gas-wall distance. While the former method, with a limited number of discrete velocities (i.e. D2Q36), is accurate up to the early transition flow regime, the latter method, with the same discrete velocities as that used in simulating hydrodynamics (i.e. D2Q9), is accurate up to the free-molecular flow regime in the Poiseuille flow between two parallel plates. This is quite astonishing in the sense that more discrete velocities are less accurate. In this paper, by solving the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook kinetic equation accurately via the discrete velocity method, we find that the accuracy of the lattice Boltzmann method is reduced significantly in the simulation of rarefied gas flows through the rough surface and porous media. Our simulation results could serve as benchmarking cases for future development of the lattice Boltzmann method for modeling and simulation of rarefied gas flows in complex geometries.

Probing the MSSM explanation of the muon g-2 anomaly in dark matter experiments and at a 100 TeV $pp$ collider

We explore the ability of current and future dark matter and collider experiments in probing anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $(g-2)_μ$, within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We find that the latest PandaX-II/LUX-2016 data gives a strong constraint on parameter space that accommodates the $(g-2)_μ$ within $2σ$ range, which will be further excluded by the upcoming XENON-1T (2017) experiment. We also find that a 100 TeV $pp$ collider can cover most of our surviving samples that satisfy DM relic density within $3σ$ range through $Z$ or $h$ resonant effect by searching for trilepton events from $\tildeχ^0_2\tildeχ^+_1$ associated production. While the samples that are beyond future sensitivity of trilepton search at a 100 TeV $pp$ collider and the DM direct detections are either higgsino/wino-like LSPs or bino-like LSPs co-annihilating with sleptons. Such compressed regions may be covered by the monojet(-like) searches at a 100 TeV $pp$ collider.

Leptonic mono-top from single stop production at LHC

Top squark (stop) can be produced via QCD interaction but also the electroweak interaction at the LHC. In this paper, we investigate the observability of the associated production of stop and chargino, $pp \to \tilde{t}_1\tildeχ^-_1$, in compressed electroweakino scenario at the 14 TeV LHC. Due to the small mass-splitting between the lightest neutralino ($\tildeχ^0_1$) and chargino ($\tildeχ^-_1$), such a single stop production can give a mono-top signature through the stop decay $\tilde{t}_1 \to t \tildeχ^0_1$. Focusing on the leptonic mono-top channel, we propose a lab-frame observable $\cosθ_{b\ell}$ to reduce the SM backgrounds in virtue of a boosted top quark from the stop decay. We find that the single stop production can be probed at $2σ$ level at the HL-LHC for $m_{\tilde{t}_1}<760$ GeV and $m_{\tildeχ^0_1}<150$ GeV.

A comment on `An improved macroscale model for gas slip flow in porous media'

In a recent paper by Lasseux, Valdés-Parada and Porter (J.~Fluid~Mech. \textbf{805} (2016) 118-146), it is found that the apparent gas permeability of the porous media is a nonlinear function of the Knudsen number. However, this result is highly questionable, because the adopted Navier-Stokes equations and the first-order velocity-slip boundary condition are first-order (in terms of the Knudsen number) approximations of the Boltzmann equation and the kinetic boundary condition for rarefied gas flows. Our numerical simulations based on the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook kinetic equation and regularized 20-moment equations prove that the Navier-Stokes equations with the first-order velocity-slip boundary condition are only accurate at a very small Knudsen number limit, where the apparent gas permeability is a linear function of the Knudsen number.

Dynamics and stability of surface waves with bulk-soluble surfactants

In this paper we study the dynamics of a layer of incompressible viscous fluid bounded below by a rigid boundary and above by a free boundary, in the presence of a uniform gravitational field. We assume that a mass of surfactant is present both at the free surface and in the bulk of fluid, and that conversion from one species to the other is possible. The surfactants couple to the fluid dynamics through the coefficient of surface tension, which depends on the the surface density of surfactants. Gradients in this concentration give rise to Marangoni stress on the free surface. In turn, the fluids advect the surfactants and distort their concentration through geometric distortions of the free surface. We model the surfactants in a way that allows absorption and desorption of surfactant between the surface and bulk. We prove that small perturbations of the equilibrium solutions give rise to global-in-time solutions that decay to equilibrium at an exponential rate. This establishes the asymptotic stability of the equilibrium solutions.

Top-squark in natural SUSY under current LHC run-2 data

We utilize the recent LHC-13 TeV data to study the lower mass bound on top-squark (stop) in natural supersymmetry. We recast the LHC sparticle inclusive search of $(\ge 1){\rm jets} + E^{miss}_T$ with $α_T$ variable, the direct stop pair search (1-lepton channel and all-hadronic channel) and the monojet analyses. We find that these searches are complementary depending on stop and higgsino masses: for a heavy stop the all-hadronic stop pair search provides the strongest bound, for an intermediate stop the inclusive SUSY analysis with $α_T$ variable is most efficient, while for a compressed stop-higgsino scenario the monojet search plays the key role. Finally, the lower mass bound on a stop is: (i) 320 GeV for compressed stop-higgsino scenario (mass splitting less than 20 GeV); (ii) 765 (860) GeV for higgsinos lighter than 300 (100) GeV.

Little Higgs Dark Matter after PandaX-II/LUX 2016 and LHC Run-1

In the Littlest Higgs model with $T$ parity (LHT), the $T$-odd heavy photon ($A_H$) is weakly interacting and can play the role of dark matter. We investigate the lower limit on the mass of $A_H$ dark matter under the constraints from Higgs data, EWPOs, $R_b$, Planck 2015 dark matter relic abundance, PandaX-II/LUX 2016 direct detections and LHC-8 TeV monojet results. We find that (1) Higgs data, EWPOs and $R_b$ can exclude the mass of $A_H$ up to 99 GeV. To produce the correct dark matter relic abundance, $A_H$ has to co-annihilate with $T$-odd quarks ($q_H$) or leptons ($\ell_H$); (2) the LUX (PandaX-II) 2016 data can further exclude $m_{A_H}<380 (270)$ GeV for $\ell_H$-$A_H$ co-annihilation and $m_{A_H}<350 (240)$ GeV for $q_H-A_H$ co-annihilation; (3) LHC-8 TeV monojet result can give a strong lower limit, $m_{A_H}>540$ GeV, for $q_H$-$A_H$ co-annihilation; (4) future XENON1T (2017) experiment can fully cover the parameter space of $\ell_H$-$A_H$ co-annihilation and will push the lower limit of $m_{A_H}$ up to about 640 GeV for $q_H$-$A_H$ co-annihilation.

Implications of CP-violating Top-Higgs Couplings at LHC and Higgs Factories

We utilise the LHC Run-1 and -2 Higgs data to constrain the CP-violating top-Higgs couplings. In order to satisfy the current full Higgs data sets at $2σ$ level, the CP-odd component $C^p_t$ and the CP-even component $C^s_t$ have to be within the ranges $|C^p_t|< 0.37$ and $0.85 <C^s_t< 1.20$, respectively, which is stronger than the LHC Run-1 bound $|C^p_t|< 0.54$ and $0.68 <C^s_t< 1.20$. With the new bound, we explore the impact on the CP-violating top-Higgs couplings in the Higgs production processes $pp \to t\bar{t}h, thj, hh$ at 13 TeV LHC, and $e^+e^- \to hZ, hγ$ at future 240 GeV Higgs factories. We find that the cross sections of $pp \to t\bar{t}h$, $pp \to thj$, $pp \to hh$, $e^+e^- \to hZ$ and $e^+e^- \to hγ$ can be enhanced up to 1.41, 1.18, 2.20, 1.001 and 1.09 times as large as the SM predictions, respectively. The future precision measurement of the process $e^+e^- \to hγ$ with an accuracy of 5\% will be able to constrain $|C^p_t|<0.19$ at most at a 240 GeV $e^+e^-$ Higgs factory.
