Dynamics and stability of sessile drops with contact points

In an effort to study the stability of contact lines in fluids, we consider the dynamics of a drop of incompressible viscous Stokes fluid evolving above a one-dimensional flat surface under the influence of gravity. This is a free boundary problem: the interface between the fluid on the surface and the air above (modeled by a trivial fluid) is free to move and experiences capillary forces. The three-phase interface where the fluid, air, and solid vessel wall meet is known as a contact point, and the angle formed between the free interface and the flat surface is called the contact angle. We consider a model of this problem that allows for fully dynamic contact points and angles. We develop a scheme of a priori estimates for the model, which then allow us to show that for initial data sufficiently close to equilibrium, the model admits global solutions that decay to a shifted equilibrium exponentially fast.

Supervised deep learning in high energy phenomenology: a mini review

Deep learning, a branch of machine learning, have been recently applied to high energy experimental and phenomenological studies. In this note we give a brief review on those applications using supervised deep learning. We first describe various learning models and then recapitulate their applications to high energy phenomenological studies. Some detailed applications are delineated in details, including the machine learning scan in the analysis of new physics parameter space, the graph neural networks in the search of top-squark production and in the $CP$ measurement of the top-Higgs coupling at the LHC.

Non-minimal Higgs-gravity coupling and naturalness at the LHC and beyond

The non-minimal Higgs-gravity coupling, $ξH^\dagger H R$, can play an interesting role in particle physics. We utilize the available LHC Run-2 data to obtain the bound on the coupling $ξ$ and discuss the prospects of constraining it at CEPC, FCC-ee and ILC. Also, we investigate its implication on the naturalness.

EVulHunter: Detecting Fake Transfer Vulnerabilities for EOSIO's Smart Contracts at Webassembly-level

As one of the representative Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) blockchain platforms, EOSIO's ecosystem grows rapidly in recent years. A number of vulnerabilities and corresponding attacks of EOSIO's smart contracts have been discovered and observed in the wild, which caused a large amount of financial damages. However, the majority of EOSIO's smart contracts are not open-sourced. As a result, the WebAssembly code may become the only available object to be analyzed in most cases. Unfortunately, current tools are web-application oriented and cannot be applied to EOSIO WebAssembly code directly, which makes it more difficult to detect vulnerabilities from those smart contracts. In this paper, we propose \toolname, a static analysis tool that can be used to detect vulnerabilities from EOSIO WASM code automatically. We focus on one particular type of vulnerabilities named \textit{fake-transfer}, and the exploitation of such vulnerabilities has led to millions of dollars in damages. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first attempt to build an automatic tool to detect vulnerabilities of EOSIO's smart contracts. The experimental results demonstrate that our tool is able to detect fake transfer vulnerabilities quickly and precisely. EVulHunter is available on GitHub\footnote{Tool and benchmarks: https://github.com/EVulHunter/EVulHunter} and YouTube\footnote{Demo video: https://youtu.be/5SJ0ZJKVZvw}.

Can we find steady-state solutions to multiscale rarefied gas flows within dozens of iterations?

One of the central problems in the study of rarefied gas dynamics is to find the steady-state solution of the Boltzmann equation quickly. When the Knudsen number is large, i.e. the system is highly rarefied, the conventional iteration scheme can lead to convergence within a few iterations. However, when the Knudsen number is small, i.e. the flow falls in the near-continuum regime, hundreds of thousands iterations are needed, and yet the "converged" solutions are prone to be contaminated by accumulated error and large numerical dissipation. Recently, based on the gas kinetic models, the implicit unified gas kinetic scheme (UGKS) and its variants have significantly reduced the iterations in the near-continuum flow regime, but still much higher than that of the highly rarefied gas flows. In this paper, we put forward a general synthetic iteration scheme (GSIS) to find the steady-state solutions of general rarefied gas flows within dozens of iterations at any Knudsen number. As the GSIS does not rely on the specific kinetic model/collision operator, it can be naturally extended to quickly find converged solutions for mixture flows and even flows involving chemical reactions. These two superior advantages are also expected to accelerate the slow convergence in simulation of near-continuum flows via the direct simulation Monte Carlo method and its low-variance version.

The Anisotropic Noise in Stochastic Gradient Descent: Its Behavior of Escaping from Sharp Minima and Regularization Effects

Understanding the behavior of stochastic gradient descent (SGD) in the context of deep neural networks has raised lots of concerns recently. Along this line, we study a general form of gradient based optimization dynamics with unbiased noise, which unifies SGD and standard Langevin dynamics. Through investigating this general optimization dynamics, we analyze the behavior of SGD on escaping from minima and its regularization effects. A novel indicator is derived to characterize the efficiency of escaping from minima through measuring the alignment of noise covariance and the curvature of loss function. Based on this indicator, two conditions are established to show which type of noise structure is superior to isotropic noise in term of escaping efficiency. We further show that the anisotropic noise in SGD satisfies the two conditions, and thus helps to escape from sharp and poor minima effectively, towards more stable and flat minima that typically generalize well. We systematically design various experiments to verify the benefits of the anisotropic noise, compared with full gradient descent plus isotropic diffusion (i.e. Langevin dynamics).

Polarization of top and chargino from stop decay in natural SUSY

Top squark (stop) plays a crucial role in the naturalness of supersymmetry (SUSY) models, which has been extensively searched for in the LHC experiments. Due to the parity-violating couplings, top quark and chargino thus produced from stop decay are expected to be polarized. We investigate the polarization of top quark and chargino, from which we find that the mass differences between neutralino and stop/chargino can affect the degree of polarization of top quark/chargino in the stop decay. We then examine the top polarization effects on kinematics of stop decay in natural SUSY (NSUSY) at the LHC and the results show that several observables have the discriminating power for different polarized top quark at the LHC, which may be useful for testing the nature of stop couplings in NSUSY.

Characterizing Code Clones in the Ethereum Smart Contract Ecosystem

In this paper, we present the first large-scale and systematic study to characterize the code reuse practice in the Ethereum smart contract ecosystem. We first performed a detailed similarity comparison study on a dataset of 10 million contracts we had harvested, and then we further conducted a qualitative analysis to characterize the diversity of the ecosystem, understand the correlation between code reuse and vulnerabilities, and detect the plagiarist DApps. Our analysis revealed that over 96% of the contracts had duplicates, while a large number of them were similar, which suggests that the ecosystem is highly homogeneous. Our results also suggested that roughly 9.7% of the similar contract pairs have exactly the same vulnerabilities, which we assume were introduced by code clones. In addition, we identified 41 DApps clusters, involving 73 plagiarized DApps which had caused huge financial loss to the original creators, accounting for 1/3 of the original market volume.

Analysis of the Gradient Descent Algorithm for a Deep Neural Network Model with Skip-connections

The behavior of the gradient descent (GD) algorithm is analyzed for a deep neural network model with skip-connections. It is proved that in the over-parametrized regime, for a suitable initialization, with high probability GD can find a global minimum exponentially fast. Generalization error estimates along the GD path are also established. As a consequence, it is shown that when the target function is in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) with a kernel defined by the initialization, there exist generalizable early-stopping solutions along the GD path. In addition, it is also shown that the GD path is uniformly close to the functions given by the related random feature model. Consequently, in this "implicit regularization" setting, the deep neural network model deteriorates to a random feature model. Our results hold for neural networks of any width larger than the input dimension.

Exploring supersymmetry with machine learning

Investigation of well-motivated parameter space in the theories of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) plays an important role in new physics discoveries. However, a large-scale exploration of models with multi-parameter or equivalent solutions with a finite separation, such as supersymmetric models, is typically a time-consuming and challenging task. In this paper, we propose a self-exploration method, named Machine Learning Scan (MLS), to achieve an efficient test of models. As a proof-of-concept, we apply MLS to investigate the subspace of MSSM and CMSSM and find that such a method can reduce the computational cost and may be helpful for accelerating the exploration of supersymmetry.

Vacuum stability in stau-neutralino coannihilation in MSSM

The stau-neutralino coannihilation provides a feasible way to accommodate the observed cosmological dark matter (DM) relic density in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). In such a coannihilation mechanism the stau mass usually has an upper bound since its annihilation rate becomes small with the increase of DM mass. Inspired by this observation, we examine the upper limit of stau mass in the parameter space with a large mixing of staus. We find that the stau pair may dominantly annihilate into dibosons and hence the upper bound on the stau mass ($\sim400$ GeV) obtained from the $f\bar{f}$ final states can be relaxed. Imposing the DM relic density constraint and requiring a long lifetime of the present vacuum, we find that the lighter stau mass can be as heavy as about 1.4 TeV for the stau maximum mixing. However, if requiring the present vacuum to survive during the thermal history of the universe, this mass limit will reduce to about 0.9 TeV. We also discuss the complementarity of vacuum stability and direct detections in probing this stau coannihilation scenario.

Unveiling CP property of top-Higgs coupling with graph neural networks at the LHC

The top-Higgs coupling plays an important role in particle physics and cosmology. The precision measurements of this coupling can provide an insight to new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we propose to use Message Passing Neural Network (MPNN) to reveal the CP nature of top-Higgs interaction through semi-leptonic channel $pp \to t(\to b\ell^-ν_\ell)\bar{t}(\to \bar{b}jj)h(\to b\bar{b})$. Using the test statistics constructed from the event classification probabilities given by the MPNN, we find that the pure CP-even and CP-odd components can be well distinguished at the LHC, with at most 300 fb$^{-1}$ experimental data.

Implicit Discontinuous Galerkin Method for the Boltzmann Equation

An implicit high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is developed to find steady-state solution of rarefied gas flow described by the Boltzmann equation with full collision operator. In the physical space, velocity distribution function is approximated by the piecewise polynomials of degree up to 4, while in the velocity space the fast spectral method is incorporated into the DG to evaluate the collision operator. A specific polynomial approximation for the collision operator is proposed to reduce the computational complexity of the fast spectral method by $K$ times, where for two-dimensional problems $K$ is 15 when DG with 4th-order polynomials are used on triangular mesh. Based on the first-order upwind scheme, a sweeping technique is employed to solve the local linear equations resulting from the DG discretization sequentially over spatial elements. This technique can preserve stability of the scheme and requires no nonlinear limiter in solving hypersonic rarefied gas flow when the flow is fully resolved. Moreover, without assembling large sparse linear system, the computational cost in terms of memory and CPU time can be significantly reduced. Five different one/two-dimensional tests including low-speed microscale flows and hypersonic rarefied gas flows are used to verify the proposed approach. Our results show that, DG schemes of different order of approximating polynomial require the same number of iterative steps to obtain the steady-state solution with the same order of accuracy; and the higher order the scheme, fewer spatial elements thus less CPU time is needed. Besides, our method can be faster than the finite difference solver by about one order of magnitude. The produced solutions can be used as benchmark data for assessing the accuracy of other gas kinetic solvers for the Boltzmann equation and gas kinetic models that simplify the Boltzmann collision operator.

A fast synthetic iterative scheme for the stationary phonon Boltzmann transport equation

In this paper, a fast synthetic iterative scheme is developed to accelerate convergence for the implicit DOM based on the stationary phonon BTE. The key innovative point of the present scheme is the introduction of the macroscopic synthetic diffusion equation for the temperature, which is obtained from the zero- and first-order moment equations of the phonon BTE. The synthetic diffusion equation, which is asymptomatically preserving to the Fourier's heat conduction equation in the diffusive regime, contains a term related to the Fourier's law and a term determined by the second-order moment of the distribution function that reflects the non-Fourier heat transfer. The mesoscopic kinetic equation and macroscopic diffusion equations are tightly coupled together, because the diffusion equation provides the temperature for the BTE, while the BTE provides the high-order moment to the diffusion equation to describe the non-Fourier heat transfer. This synthetic iterative scheme strengthens the coupling of all phonons in the phase space to facilitate the fast convergence from the diffusive to ballistic regimes. Typical numerical tests in one-, two-, and three-dimensional problems demonstrate that our scheme can describe the multiscale heat transfer problems accurately and efficiently. For all test cases convergence is reached within one hundred iteration steps, which is one to three orders of magnitude faster than the traditional implicit DOM in the near-diffusive regime.

Accurate and efficient computation of the Boltzmann equation for Kramer's problem

In this work, a novel synthetic iteration scheme (SIS) is developed for the LBE to find solutions to Kramer's problem accurately and efficiently: the velocity distribution function is first solved by the conventional iterative scheme, then it is modified such that in each iteration i) the flow velocity is guided by an ordinary differential equation that is asymptotic-preserving at the Navier-Stokes limit and ii) the shear stress is equal to the average shear stress. Based on the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook model, the SIS is assessed to be efficient and accurate. Then we investigate the Kramer's problem for gases interacting through the inverse power-law, shielded Coulomb, and Lennard-Jones potentials, subject to diffuse-specular and Cercignani-Lampis gas-surface boundary conditions. When the tangential momentum accommodation coefficient (TMAC) is not larger than one, the Knudsen layer function is strongly affected by the potential, where its value and width increase with the effective viscosity index of gas molecules. Moreover, the Knudsen layer function exhibits similarities among different values of TMAC when the intermolecular potential is fixed. For Cercignani-Lampis boundary condition with TMAC larger than one, both the viscous slip coefficient and Knudsen layer function are affected by the intermolecular potential, especially when the "backward" scattering limit is approached. With the asymptotic theory by Jiang and Luo for the singular behavior of the velocity gradient in the vicinity of the solid surface, we find that the whole Knudsen layer function can be well fitted by power series.

Vanishing and injectivity for R-Hodge modules and R-divisors

We prove the injectivity and vanishing theorem for R-Hodge modules and R-divisors over projective varieties, extending the results for rational Hodge modules and integral divisors in \cite{Wu15}. In particular, the injectivity generalizes the fundamental injectivity of Esnault-Viehweg for normal crossing Q-divisors, while the vanishing generalizes Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing for Q-divisors. As a main application, we also deduce a Fujita-type freeness result for R-Hodge modules in the normal crossing case.

Brody hyperbolicity of base spaces of certain families of varieties

We prove that quasi-projective base spaces of smooth families of minimal varieties of general type with maximal variation do not admit Zariski dense entire curves. We deduce the fact that moduli stacks of polarized varieties of this sort are Brody hyperbolic, answering a special case of a question of Viehweg and Zuo. For two-dimensional bases, we show analogous results in the more general case of families of varieties admitting a good minimal model.
