Interpretable learning of voltage for electrode design of multivalent metal-ion batteries

Deep learning (DL) has indeed emerged as a powerful tool for rapidly and accurately predicting materials properties from big data, such as the design of current commercial Li-ion batteries. However, its practical utility for multivalent metal-ion batteries (MIBs), the most promising future solution of large-scale energy storage, is limited due to the scarce MIB data availability and poor DL model interpretability. Here, we develop an interpretable DL model as an effective and accurate method for learning electrode voltages of multivalent MIBs (divalent magnesium, calcium, zinc, and trivalent aluminum) at small dataset limits (150~500). Using the experimental results as validation, our model is much more accurate than machine-learning models which usually are better than DL in the small dataset regime. Besides the high accuracy, our feature-engineering-free DL model is explainable, which automatically extracts the atom covalent radius as the most important feature for the voltage learning by visualizing vectors from the layers of the neural network. The presented model potentially accelerates the design and optimization of multivalent MIB materials with fewer data and less domain-knowledge restriction, and is implemented into a publicly available online tool kit in http://batteries.2dmatpedia.org/ for the battery community.

Short range correlations in the extended quantum molecular dynamics model

Short-range potential has been added into an extended quantum molecular dynamics (EQMD) model. The RMS radius, binding energy and momentum distribution of $^{12}$C with different initial structures and short-range potential parameters have been checked. The separation energy of $^{12}$C(p,2p)$^{11}$B reaction is calculated and compared with the experimental data, it indicates that our modified EQMD model can be taken as a reliable tool for studying proton pair knock-out reaction. Furthermore, the short range correlation effects on emission time and momentum spectrum of two protons are discussed. Finally, the momentum correlation function of the emitted proton pair is calculated by the Lednicky and Lyuboshitz's analytical method. The result explains that short-range repulsion causes high momentum tail and weakens the momentum correlation function.

Epitaxial Growth of Ultraflat Bismuthene with Large Topological Band Inversion Enabled by Substrate-Orbital-Filtering Effect

Quantum spin Hall (QSH) systems hold promises of low-power-consuming spintronic devices, yet their practical applications are extremely impeded by the small energy gaps. Fabricating QSH materials with large gaps, especially under the guidance of design principles, is essential for both scientific research and practical applications. Here, we demonstrate that large on-site atomic spin-orbit coupling can be directly exploited via the intriguing substrate-orbital-filtering effect to generate large-gap QSH systems and experimentally realized on the epitaxially synthesized ultraflat bismuthene on Ag(111). Theoretical calculations reveal that the underlying substrate selectively filters Bi pz orbitals away from the Fermi level, leading pxy orbitals with nonzero magnetic quantum numbers, resulting in large topological gap of ~1 eV at the K point. The corresponding topological edge states are identified through scanning tunneling spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations. Our findings provide general strategies to design large-gap QSH systems and further explore their topology-related physics.

High-throughput Discovery and Intelligent Design of 2D Functional Materials for Various Applications

Novel technologies and new materials are in high demand for future energy-efficient electronic devices to overcome the fundamental limitations of miniaturization of current silicon-based devices. Two-dimensional (2D) materials show promising applications in the next generation devices because they can be tailored on the specific property that a technology is based on, and be compatible with other technologies, such as the silicon-based (opto)electronics. Although the number of experimentally discovered 2D materials is growing, the speed is very slow and only a few dozen 2D materials have been synthesized or exfoliated since the discovery of graphene. Recently, a novel computational technique, dubbed "high-throughput computational materials design", becomes a burgeoning area of materials science, which is the combination of the quantum-mechanical theory, materials genome, and database construction with intelligent data mining. This new and powerful tool can greatly accelerate the discovery, design and application of 2D materials by creating database containing a large amount of 2D materials with calculated fundamental properties, and then intelligently mining (via high-throughput automation or machine learning) the database in the search of 2D materials with the desired properties for particular applications, such as energy conversion, electronics, spintronics, and optoelectronics.

Developing Dipole-scheme Heterojunction Photocatalysts

The high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers is the bottleneck of photocatalysis, severely limiting the photocatalytic efficiency. Here, we develop a dipole-scheme (D-scheme for short) photocatalytic model and materials realization. The D-scheme heterojunction not only can effectively separate electrons and holes by a large polarization field, but also boosts photocatalytic redox reactions with large driving photovoltages and without any carrier loss. By means of first-principles and GW calculations, we propose a D-scheme heterojunction prototype with two real polar materials, PtSeTe/LiGaS2. This D-scheme photocatalyst exhibits a high capability of the photogenerated carrier separation and near-infrared light absorption. Moreover, our calculations of the Gibbs free energy imply a high ability of the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction by a large driving force. The proposed D-scheme photocatalytic model is generalized and paves a valuable route of significantly improving the photocatalytic efficiency.

Protected valley states and generation of valley- and spin-polarized current in monolayer MA2Z4

The optical selection rules obeyed by two-dimensional materials with spin-valley coupling enable the selective excitation of carriers. We show that six members of the monolayer MA2Z4 (M = Mo and W; A = C, Si, and Ge; Z = N, P, and As) family are direct band-gap semiconductors with protected valley states and that circularly polarized infrared light can induce valley-selective inter-band transitions. Our optovalleytronic device demonstrates a close to 100% valley- and spin-polarized current under in-plane bias and circularly polarized infrared light, which can be exploited to encode, process, and store information.

Sliding Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions

Very recently, ferroelectric polarization in staggered bilayer hexagonal boron nitride (BBN) and its novel sliding inversion mechanism was reported experimentally (Science 2021, 372, 1458; 2021, 372, 1462), which paves a new way to realize van der Waals (vdW) ferroelectric devices with new functionalities. Here, we develop vdW sliding ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) using the sliding ferroelectric BBN unit as ultrathin barriers and explore their transport properties with different ferroelectric states and metal contacts via the first principles. It is found that the electrode/BBN contact electric field quenches the ferroelectricity in the staggered BBN, resulting a very small tunnelling electroresistance (TER). Inserting high-mobility 2D materials between Au and BN can restore the BBN ferroelectricity, reaching a giant TER of ~10,000% in sliding FTJs. We finally investigate the metal-contact and thickness effect on the tunnelling property of sliding FTJs. The giant TER and multiple non-volatile resistance states in vdW sliding FTJs show the promising applications in voltage-controlled nano-memories with ultrahigh storage density.

Constructing Emotion Consensus and Utilizing Unpaired Data for Empathetic Dialogue Generation

Researches on dialogue empathy aim to endow an agent with the capacity of accurate understanding and proper responding for emotions. Existing models for empathetic dialogue generation focus on the emotion flow in one direction, that is, from the context to response. We argue that conducting an empathetic conversation is a bidirectional process, where empathy occurs when the emotions of two interlocutors could converge on the same point, i.e., reaching an emotion consensus. Besides, we also find that the empathetic dialogue corpus is extremely limited, which further restricts the model performance. To address the above issues, we propose a dual-generative model, Dual-Emp, to simultaneously construct the emotion consensus and utilize some external unpaired data. Specifically, our model integrates a forward dialogue model, a backward dialogue model, and a discrete latent variable representing the emotion consensus into a unified architecture. Then, to alleviate the constraint of paired data, we extract unpaired emotional data from open-domain conversations and employ Dual-Emp to produce pseudo paired empathetic samples, which is more efficient and low-cost than the human annotation. Automatic and human evaluations demonstrate that our method outperforms competitive baselines in producing coherent and empathetic responses.

Tailoring magnetic order via atomically stacking 3d/5d electrons

The ability to tune magnetic orders, such as magnetic anisotropy and topological spin texture, is desired in order to achieve high-performance spintronic devices. A recent strategy has been to employ interfacial engineering techniques, such as the introduction of spin-correlated interfacial coupling, to tailor magnetic orders and achieve novel magnetic properties. We chose a unique polar-nonpolar LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice because Mn (3d)/Ir (5d) oxides exhibit rich magnetic behaviors and strong spin-orbit coupling through the entanglement of their 3d and 5d electrons. Through magnetization and magnetotransport measurements, we found that the magnetic order is interface-dominated as the superlattice period is decreased. We were able to then effectively modify the magnetization, tilt of the ferromagnetic easy axis, and symmetry transition of the anisotropic magnetoresistance of the LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice by introducing additional Mn (3d) and Ir (5d) interfaces. Further investigations using in-depth first-principles calculations and numerical simulations revealed that these magnetic behaviors could be understood by the 3d/5d electron correlation and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The results reported here demonstrate a new route to synchronously engineer magnetic properties through the atomic stacking of different electrons, contributing to future applications.

Identifying Untrustworthy Samples: Data Filtering for Open-domain Dialogues with Bayesian Optimization

Being able to reply with a related, fluent, and informative response is an indispensable requirement for building high-quality conversational agents. In order to generate better responses, some approaches have been proposed, such as feeding extra information by collecting large-scale datasets with human annotations, designing neural conversational models (NCMs) with complex architecture and loss functions, or filtering out untrustworthy samples based on a dialogue attribute, e.g., Relatedness or Genericness. In this paper, we follow the third research branch and present a data filtering method for open-domain dialogues, which identifies untrustworthy samples from training data with a quality measure that linearly combines seven dialogue attributes. The attribute weights are obtained via Bayesian Optimization (BayesOpt) that aims to optimize an objective function for dialogue generation iteratively on the validation set. Then we score training samples with the quality measure, sort them in descending order, and filter out those at the bottom. Furthermore, to accelerate the "filter-train-evaluate" iterations involved in BayesOpt on large-scale datasets, we propose a training framework that integrates maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) and negative training method (NEG). The training method updates parameters of a trained NCMs on two small sets with newly maintained and removed samples, respectively. Specifically, MLE is applied to maximize the log-likelihood of newly maintained samples, while NEG is used to minimize the log-likelihood of newly removed ones. Experimental results on two datasets show that our method can effectively identify untrustworthy samples, and NCMs trained on the filtered datasets achieve better performance.

Accurate Mode-Coupling Characterization of Low-Crosstalk Ring-Core Fibers using Integral Calculation based Swept-Wavelength Interferometry Measurement

In this paper, to accurately characterize the low inter-mode coupling of the weakly-coupled few mode fibers (FMFs), we propose a modified inter-mode coupling characterization method based on swept-wavelength interferometry measurement, in which an integral calculation approach is used to eliminate significant sources of error that may lead to underestimation of the power coupling coefficient. Using the proposed characterization method, a low-crosstalk ring-core fiber (RCF) with low mode dependent loss (MDL) and with single span length up to 100 km is experimentally measured to have low power coupling coefficients between high-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode groups of below -30 dB/km over C band. The measured low coupling coefficients based on the proposed method are verified by the direct system power measurements, proving the feasibility and reliability of the proposed inter-mode coupling characterization method.

Giant enhancement of anomalous Hall effect in Cr modulation-doped non-collinear antiferromagnetic Mn3Sn thin films

We report on Cr doping effect in Mn3Sn polycrystalline films with both uniform and modulation doping. It is found that Cr doping with low concentration does not cause notable changes to the structural and magnetic properties of Mn3Sn, but it significantly enhances the anomalous Hall conductivity, particularly for modulation-doped samples at low temperature. A Hall conductivity as high as 184.8 Ω-1 cm-1 is obtained for modulation-doped samples at 50 K, in a sharp contrast to vanishingly small values for undoped samples at the same temperature. We attribute the enhancement to the change of Fermi level induced by Cr doping

GTM: A Generative Triple-Wise Model for Conversational Question Generation

Generating some appealing questions in open-domain conversations is an effective way to improve human-machine interactions and lead the topic to a broader or deeper direction. To avoid dull or deviated questions, some researchers tried to utilize answer, the "future" information, to guide question generation. However, they separate a post-question-answer (PQA) triple into two parts: post-question (PQ) and question-answer (QA) pairs, which may hurt the overall coherence. Besides, the QA relationship is modeled as a one-to-one mapping that is not reasonable in open-domain conversations. To tackle these problems, we propose a generative triple-wise model with hierarchical variations for open-domain conversational question generation (CQG). Latent variables in three hierarchies are used to represent the shared background of a triple and one-to-many semantic mappings in both PQ and QA pairs. Experimental results on a large-scale CQG dataset show that our method significantly improves the quality of questions in terms of fluency, coherence and diversity over competitive baselines.

Effect of acetylene links on electronic and optical properties of semiconducting graphynes

The family of graphynes, novel two-dimensional semiconductors with various and fascinating chemical and physical properties, has attracted great interest from both science and industry. Currently, the focus of graphynes is on graphdiyne, or graphyne-2. In this work, we systematically study the effect of acetylene, i.e., carbon-carbon triple bond, links on the electronic and optical properties of a series of graphynes (graphyne-n, where n = 1-5, the number of acetylene bonds) using the ab initio calculations. We find an even-odd pattern, i.e., n = 1, 3, 5 and n = 2, 4 having different features, which has not be discovered in studying graphyne or graphdyine only. It is found that as the number of acetylene bonds increases, the electron effective mass increases continuously in the low energy range because of the flatter conduction band induced by the longer acetylene links. Meanwhile, longer acetylene links result in larger redshift of the imaginary part of the dielectric function, loss function, and extinction coefficient. In this work, we propose an effective method to tune and manipulate both the electronic and optical properties of graphynes for the applications in optoelectronic devices and photo-chemical catalysis.

Origin and Large Enhancement of Large Spin Hall Angle in Weyl Semimetals LaAl$X$ ($X$=Si, Ge)

We study the origin of the strong spin Hall effect (SHE) in a recently discovered family of Weyl semimetals, LaAl$X$ ($X$=Si, Ge) via a first-principles approach with maximally localized Wannier functions. We show that the strong intrinsic SHE in LaAl$X$ originates from the multiple slight anticrossings of nodal lines and points near $E_F$ due to their high mirror symmetry and large spin-orbit interaction. It is further found that both electrical and thermal means can enhance the spin Hall conductivity ($σ_{SH}$). However, the former also increases the electrical conductivity ($σ_{c}$), while the latter decreases it. As a result, the independent tuning of $σ_{SH}$ and $σ_{c}$ by thermal means can enhance the spin Hall angle (proportional to $\frac{σ_{SH}}{σ_{c}}$), a figure of merit of charge-to-spin current interconversion of spin-orbit torque devices. The underlying physics of such independent changes of the spin Hall and electrical conductivity by thermal means is revealed through the band-resolved and $k$-resolved spin Berry curvature. Our finding offers a new way in the search of high SHA materials for room-temperature spin-orbitronics applications.

Probing Product Description Generation via Posterior Distillation

In product description generation (PDG), the user-cared aspect is critical for the recommendation system, which can not only improve user's experiences but also obtain more clicks. High-quality customer reviews can be considered as an ideal source to mine user-cared aspects. However, in reality, a large number of new products (known as long-tailed commodities) cannot gather sufficient amount of customer reviews, which brings a big challenge in the product description generation task. Existing works tend to generate the product description solely based on item information, i.e., product attributes or title words, which leads to tedious contents and cannot attract customers effectively. To tackle this problem, we propose an adaptive posterior network based on Transformer architecture that can utilize user-cared information from customer reviews. Specifically, we first extend the self-attentive Transformer encoder to encode product titles and attributes. Then, we apply an adaptive posterior distillation module to utilize useful review information, which integrates user-cared aspects to the generation process. Finally, we apply a Transformer-based decoding phase with copy mechanism to automatically generate the product description. Besides, we also collect a large-scare Chinese product description dataset to support our work and further research in this field. Experimental results show that our model is superior to traditional generative models in both automatic indicators and human evaluation.

Learning to Select Context in a Hierarchical and Global Perspective for Open-domain Dialogue Generation

Open-domain multi-turn conversations mainly have three features, which are hierarchical semantic structure, redundant information, and long-term dependency. Grounded on these, selecting relevant context becomes a challenge step for multi-turn dialogue generation. However, existing methods cannot differentiate both useful words and utterances in long distances from a response. Besides, previous work just performs context selection based on a state in the decoder, which lacks a global guidance and could lead some focuses on irrelevant or unnecessary information. In this paper, we propose a novel model with hierarchical self-attention mechanism and distant supervision to not only detect relevant words and utterances in short and long distances, but also discern related information globally when decoding. Experimental results on two public datasets of both automatic and human evaluations show that our model significantly outperforms other baselines in terms of fluency, coherence, and informativeness.

User-Inspired Posterior Network for Recommendation Reason Generation

Recommendation reason generation, aiming at showing the selling points of products for customers, plays a vital role in attracting customers' attention as well as improving user experience. A simple and effective way is to extract keywords directly from the knowledge-base of products, i.e., attributes or title, as the recommendation reason. However, generating recommendation reason from product knowledge doesn't naturally respond to users' interests. Fortunately, on some E-commerce websites, there exists more and more user-generated content (user-content for short), i.e., product question-answering (QA) discussions, which reflect user-cared aspects. Therefore, in this paper, we consider generating the recommendation reason by taking into account not only the product attributes but also the customer-generated product QA discussions. In reality, adequate user-content is only possible for the most popular commodities, whereas large sums of long-tail products or new products cannot gather a sufficient number of user-content. To tackle this problem, we propose a user-inspired multi-source posterior transformer (MSPT), which induces the model reflecting the users' interests with a posterior multiple QA discussions module, and generating recommendation reasons containing the product attributes as well as the user-cared aspects. Experimental results show that our model is superior to traditional generative models. Additionally, the analysis also shows that our model can focus more on the user-cared aspects than baselines.
