Probing single stop production at the FCC-hh/SPPC

Top squark (stop) is a crucial part of supersymmetric models (SUSY) to understand the naturalness problem. Other than the traditional stop pair production, the single production via electroweak interaction provides signals with distinctive features which could help confirm the existence of the top squark. In this paper, we investigate the observability of stop through the mono-top channel of the single stop production at the future proton-proton colliders, FCC-hh and SPPC, in a simplified Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). With the integrated luminosity of 3000 $\text{fb}^{-1}$, we can probe the stop with mass up to 3.25 TeV by the mono-top channel at $5σ$ level. Considering the systematic uncertainty of 10%, the exclusion limit for stop mass can be reached at about 1.5 TeV. Exclusion limits on stop mass and higgsino mass parameter $μ$ are also presented.

Discriminability Distillation in Group Representation Learning

Learning group representation is a commonly concerned issue in tasks where the basic unit is a group, set, or sequence. Previously, the research community tries to tackle it by aggregating the elements in a group based on an indicator either defined by humans such as the quality and saliency, or generated by a black box such as the attention score. This article provides a more essential and explicable view. We claim the most significant indicator to show whether the group representation can be benefited from one of its element is not the quality or an inexplicable score, but the discriminability w.r.t. the model. We explicitly design the discrimiability using embedded class centroids on a proxy set. We show the discrimiability knowledge has good properties that can be distilled by a light-weight distillation network and can be generalized on the unseen target set. The whole procedure is denoted as discriminability distillation learning (DDL). The proposed DDL can be flexibly plugged into many group-based recognition tasks without influencing the original training procedures. Comprehensive experiments on various tasks have proven the effectiveness of DDL for both accuracy and efficiency. Moreover, it pushes forward the state-of-the-art results on these tasks by an impressive margin.

Sep-Stereo: Visually Guided Stereophonic Audio Generation by Associating Source Separation

Stereophonic audio is an indispensable ingredient to enhance human auditory experience. Recent research has explored the usage of visual information as guidance to generate binaural or ambisonic audio from mono ones with stereo supervision. However, this fully supervised paradigm suffers from an inherent drawback: the recording of stereophonic audio usually requires delicate devices that are expensive for wide accessibility. To overcome this challenge, we propose to leverage the vastly available mono data to facilitate the generation of stereophonic audio. Our key observation is that the task of visually indicated audio separation also maps independent audios to their corresponding visual positions, which shares a similar objective with stereophonic audio generation. We integrate both stereo generation and source separation into a unified framework, Sep-Stereo, by considering source separation as a particular type of audio spatialization. Specifically, a novel associative pyramid network architecture is carefully designed for audio-visual feature fusion. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework can improve the stereophonic audio generation results while performing accurate sound separation with a shared backbone.

Probing vector-like top partner from same-sign dilepton events at the LHC

The Standard Model is a successful theory but lack of a mechanism for neutrino mass generation as well as a solution to the naturalness problem. In the models that are proposed to simultaneously solve the two problems, heavy Majorana neutrinos and top partners are usually predicted that can lead to a new decay mode of the top partner mediated by the heavy Majorana neutrinos: $T\to b\,W^{+}\to b\,\ell^{+}\ell^{+}q\bar{q'}$. In this paper, we will study the observability of such a new signature via the pair production process of top partner $pp \to T\bar{T} \to 2b+ \ell^\pm \ell^\pm+4j$ in a model independent way. By performing Monte-Carlo simulation, we present the $2σ$ exclusion limits of the top partner mass and mixing parameters at the HL-LHC.

Probing a new decay of vector-like top partner mediated by heavy Majorana neutrino via single production

Models beyond the Standard Model have been proposed to simultaneously solve the problems of naturalness and neutrino mass, in which heavy Majorana neutrinos and vector-like top partners are usually predicted. A new decay channel of the top partner mediated by the heavy Majorana neutrino can thus appear: $T\to b\,W^{+}\to b\,\ell^{+}\ell^{+}q\bar{q'}$. We study in this paper the observability of this decay process through single production of the top partner at the 14 TeV LHC: $pp\to T/\bar{T}$+jets$\to b/\bar{b}+μ^{\pm}μ^{\pm}$+jets. $2σ$ exclusion bounds on the top partner mass and mixing parameters are given by Monte-Carlo simulation, which surpass those from the search through VLT pair production in the mass range of $m_{T}>1.3$ TeV.

Mono-b events from single stop production at the HL-LHC and HE-LHC

Top-squarks (stop) play an important role in SUSY naturalness. The stop pair production is considered as the most effective way to search for stop at the LHC. However, the collider signature of stop pair production is usually characterized by $t\bar{t}$ plus missing transverse energy, which is also predicted in many other non-supersymmetric models. On the other hand, the single stop production via the electroweak interaction can provide some distinctive signatures, and thus will help to confirm the existence of the stop. In this paper, we investigate the observability of the mono-$b$ events from the single stop production process $pp \to \tilde t_1 \tildeχ^-_1 \to b+ E\!\!\!\!/_T$ in a simplified MSSM framework where the higgsinos and stops are the only sparticles at the HL-LHC and HE-LHC. We find that the stop mass and the higgsino mass may be probed up to about 1.6 TeV and 550 GeV at $5σ$ level at the HE-LHC with the integrated luminosity ${\cal L} = 15~\text{ab}^{-1}$. We also present the $2σ$ exclusion limits of the stop mass at the HL-LHC and HE-LHC.

Top quark as a probe of heavy Majorana neutrino at the LHC and future collider

Right-handed (RH) Majorana neutrinos play a crucial role in understanding the origin of neutrino mass, the nature of dark matter and the mechanism of matter-antimatter asymmetry. In this work, we investigate the observability of heavy Majorana neutrino through the top quark neutrinoless double beta decay process $t \to b \ell^+ \ell^+ j j$ at hadron colliders. By performing detector level simulation, we demonstrate that our method can give stronger limits on the light-heavy neutrino mixing parameters $|V_{eN, μN}|$ in the mass range of 15 GeV $< m_N <$ 80 GeV than other existing collider bounds.

Rotate-and-Render: Unsupervised Photorealistic Face Rotation from Single-View Images

Though face rotation has achieved rapid progress in recent years, the lack of high-quality paired training data remains a great hurdle for existing methods. The current generative models heavily rely on datasets with multi-view images of the same person. Thus, their generated results are restricted by the scale and domain of the data source. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel unsupervised framework that can synthesize photo-realistic rotated faces using only single-view image collections in the wild. Our key insight is that rotating faces in the 3D space back and forth, and re-rendering them to the 2D plane can serve as a strong self-supervision. We leverage the recent advances in 3D face modeling and high-resolution GAN to constitute our building blocks. Since the 3D rotation-and-render on faces can be applied to arbitrary angles without losing details, our approach is extremely suitable for in-the-wild scenarios (i.e. no paired data are available), where existing methods fall short. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach has superior synthesis quality as well as identity preservation over the state-of-the-art methods, across a wide range of poses and domains. Furthermore, we validate that our rotate-and-render framework naturally can act as an effective data augmentation engine for boosting modern face recognition systems even on strong baseline models.

ET-GAN: Cross-Language Emotion Transfer Based on Cycle-Consistent Generative Adversarial Networks

Despite the remarkable progress made in synthesizing emotional speech from text, it is still challenging to provide emotion information to existing speech segments. Previous methods mainly rely on parallel data, and few works have studied the generalization ability for one model to transfer emotion information across different languages. To cope with such problems, we propose an emotion transfer system named ET-GAN, for learning language-independent emotion transfer from one emotion to another without parallel training samples. Based on cycle-consistent generative adversarial network, our method ensures the transfer of only emotion information across speeches with simple loss designs. Besides, we introduce an approach for migrating emotion information across different languages by using transfer learning. The experiment results show that our method can efficiently generate high-quality emotional speech for any given emotion category, without aligned speech pairs.

Self-supervised Adversarial Training

Recent work has demonstrated that neural networks are vulnerable to adversarial examples. To escape from the predicament, many works try to harden the model in various ways, in which adversarial training is an effective way which learns robust feature representation so as to resist adversarial attacks. Meanwhile, the self-supervised learning aims to learn robust and semantic embedding from data itself. With these views, we introduce self-supervised learning to against adversarial examples in this paper. Specifically, the self-supervised representation coupled with k-Nearest Neighbour is proposed for classification. To further strengthen the defense ability, self-supervised adversarial training is proposed, which maximizes the mutual information between the representations of original examples and the corresponding adversarial examples. Experimental results show that the self-supervised representation outperforms its supervised version in respect of robustness and self-supervised adversarial training can further improve the defense ability efficiently.

Visual Summarization of Scholarly Videos using Word Embeddings and Keyphrase Extraction

Effective learning with audiovisual content depends on many factors. Besides the quality of the learning resource's content, it is essential to discover the most relevant and suitable video in order to support the learning process most effectively. Video summarization techniques facilitate this goal by providing a quick overview over the content. It is especially useful for longer recordings such as conference presentations or lectures. In this paper, we present an approach that generates a visual summary of video content based on semantic word embeddings and keyphrase extraction. For this purpose, we exploit video annotations that are automatically generated by speech recognition and video OCR (optical character recognition).

Vision-Infused Deep Audio Inpainting

Multi-modality perception is essential to develop interactive intelligence. In this work, we consider a new task of visual information-infused audio inpainting, \ie synthesizing missing audio segments that correspond to their accompanying videos. We identify two key aspects for a successful inpainter: (1) It is desirable to operate on spectrograms instead of raw audios. Recent advances in deep semantic image inpainting could be leveraged to go beyond the limitations of traditional audio inpainting. (2) To synthesize visually indicated audio, a visual-audio joint feature space needs to be learned with synchronization of audio and video. To facilitate a large-scale study, we collect a new multi-modality instrument-playing dataset called MUSIC-Extra-Solo (MUSICES) by enriching MUSIC dataset. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework is capable of inpainting realistic and varying audio segments with or without visual contexts. More importantly, our synthesized audio segments are coherent with their video counterparts, showing the effectiveness of our proposed Vision-Infused Audio Inpainter (VIAI). A Graph-Based Framework to Bridge Movies and Synopses

Inspired by the remarkable advances in video analytics, research teams are stepping towards a greater ambition -- movie understanding. However, compared to those activity videos in conventional datasets, movies are significantly different. Generally, movies are much longer and consist of much richer temporal structures. More importantly, the interactions among characters play a central role in expressing the underlying story. To facilitate the efforts along this direction, we construct a dataset called Movie Synopses Associations (MSA) over 327 movies, which provides a synopsis for each movie, together with annotated associations between synopsis paragraphs and movie segments. On top of this dataset, we develop a framework to perform matching between movie segments and synopsis paragraphs. This framework integrates different aspects of a movie, including event dynamics and character interactions, and allows them to be matched with parsed paragraphs, based on a graph-based formulation. Our study shows that the proposed framework remarkably improves the matching accuracy over conventional feature-based methods. It also reveals the importance of narrative structures and character interactions in movie understanding.

DUP-Net: Denoiser and Upsampler Network for 3D Adversarial Point Clouds Defense

Neural networks are vulnerable to adversarial examples, which poses a threat to their application in security sensitive systems. We propose a Denoiser and UPsampler Network (DUP-Net) structure as defenses for 3D adversarial point cloud classification, where the two modules reconstruct surface smoothness by dropping or adding points. In this paper, statistical outlier removal (SOR) and a data-driven upsampling network are considered as denoiser and upsampler respectively. Compared with baseline defenses, DUP-Net has three advantages. First, with DUP-Net as a defense, the target model is more robust to white-box adversarial attacks. Second, the statistical outlier removal provides added robustness since it is a non-differentiable denoising operation. Third, the upsampler network can be trained on a small dataset and defends well against adversarial attacks generated from other point cloud datasets. We conduct various experiments to validate that DUP-Net is very effective as defense in practice. Our best defense eliminates 83.8% of C&W and l_2 loss based attack (point shifting), 50.0% of C&W and Hausdorff distance loss based attack (point adding) and 9.0% of saliency map based attack (point dropping) under 200 dropped points on PointNet.

Polarization of top and chargino from stop decay in natural SUSY

Top squark (stop) plays a crucial role in the naturalness of supersymmetry (SUSY) models, which has been extensively searched for in the LHC experiments. Due to the parity-violating couplings, top quark and chargino thus produced from stop decay are expected to be polarized. We investigate the polarization of top quark and chargino, from which we find that the mass differences between neutralino and stop/chargino can affect the degree of polarization of top quark/chargino in the stop decay. We then examine the top polarization effects on kinematics of stop decay in natural SUSY (NSUSY) at the LHC and the results show that several observables have the discriminating power for different polarized top quark at the LHC, which may be useful for testing the nature of stop couplings in NSUSY.

Mechanism of Synergistic Effects of Neutron- and Gamma-Ray-Radiated PNP Bipolar Transistors

The synergistic effects of neutron and gamma ray radiated PNP transistors are systematically investigated as functions of the neutron fluence, gamma ray dose, and dose rate. We find that the damages show a `tick'-like dependence on the gamma ray dose after the samples are radiated by neutrons. Two negative synergistic effects are derived, both of which have similar magnitudes as the ionization damage (ID) itself. The first one depends linearly on the gamma ray dose, whose slope depends quadratically on the initial displacement damage (DD) and can be attributed to the healing of neutron-radiation-induced defects in silicon. The second one has an exponential decay with the gamma ray dose, whose amplitude shows a rather strong enhanced low-dose-rate sensitivity (ELDRS) effect and can be attributed to the passivation of neutron-induced defects near the silica/silicon interface by the gamma-ray-generated protons in silica, which can penetrate the silica/silicon interface to passivate the neutron-induced defects in silicon. The simulated results based on the proposed model match the experimental data very well, but differ from previous model, which does not assume annihilation or passivation of the displacement defects. The unraveled defect annealing mechanism is important because it implies that displacement damages can be repaired by gamma ray radiation or proton diffusion, which can have important device applications in the space or other extreme environments.

Talking Face Generation by Adversarially Disentangled Audio-Visual Representation

Talking face generation aims to synthesize a sequence of face images that correspond to a clip of speech. This is a challenging task because face appearance variation and semantics of speech are coupled together in the subtle movements of the talking face regions. Existing works either construct specific face appearance model on specific subjects or model the transformation between lip motion and speech. In this work, we integrate both aspects and enable arbitrary-subject talking face generation by learning disentangled audio-visual representation. We find that the talking face sequence is actually a composition of both subject-related information and speech-related information. These two spaces are then explicitly disentangled through a novel associative-and-adversarial training process. This disentangled representation has an advantage where both audio and video can serve as inputs for generation. Extensive experiments show that the proposed approach generates realistic talking face sequences on arbitrary subjects with much clearer lip motion patterns than previous work. We also demonstrate the learned audio-visual representation is extremely useful for the tasks of automatic lip reading and audio-video retrieval.

Polarization of top quark in vector-like quark decay

Vector-like quarks (VLQs) are attractive extensions to the Standard Model. They mix with the SM quarks and can lead to rich phenomenology. Determination of VLQ's interaction structure with the SM is then an important issue, which can be inferred from the decay products of VLQs, such as top quark. We calculate the spin-analyzing powers for charged leptons from top quark in VLQ decay for various VLQ scenarios. We find that the top polarization effect will be helpful to distinguish different natures of the VLQ couplings with the SM.
