Probabilistic Analysis of Euclidean Capacitated Vehicle Routing

We give a probabilistic analysis of the unit-demand Euclidean capacitated vehicle routing problem in the random setting, where the input distribution consists of $n$ unit-demand customers modeled as independent, identically distributed uniform random points in the two-dimensional plane. The objective is to visit every customer using a set of routes of minimum total length, such that each route visits at most $k$ customers, where $k$ is the capacity of a vehicle. All of the following results are in the random setting and hold asymptotically almost surely. The best known polynomial-time approximation for this problem is the iterated tour partitioning (ITP) algorithm, introduced in 1985 by Haimovich and Rinnooy Kan. They showed that the ITP algorithm is near-optimal when $k$ is either $o(\sqrt{n})$ or $ω(\sqrt{n})$, and they asked whether the ITP algorithm was also effective in the intermediate range. In this work, we show that when $k=\sqrt{n}$, the ITP algorithm is at best a $(1+c_0)$-approximation for some positive constant $c_0$. On the other hand, the approximation ratio of the ITP algorithm was known to be at most $0.995+α$ due to Bompadre, Dror, and Orlin, where $α$ is the approximation ratio of an algorithm for the traveling salesman problem. In this work, we improve the upper bound on the approximation ratio of the ITP algorithm to $0.915+α$. Our analysis is based on a new lower bound on the optimal cost for the metric capacitated vehicle routing problem, which may be of independent interest.

Emerging Oscillating Reactions at the Insulator/Semiconductor Solid/Solid Interface via Proton Implantation

Most oscillating reactions (ORs) happen in solutions. Few existing solid-based ORs either happen on solid/gas (e.g., oxidation or corrosion) or solid/liquid interfaces, or at the all-solid interfaces neighboring to metals or ionic conductors (e.g., electrolysis or electroplate). We report in this paper a new type of all-solid based OR that happens at the insulator (amorphous SiO$_2$)/semiconductor (Si) interface with the interfacial point defects as the oscillating species. This OR is the first example of the point-defect coupled ORs (PDC-ORs) proposed by H. Schmalzried et al. and J. Janek et al. decades ago. We use proton implantation as the driving force of the oscillation, and employ techniques common in semiconductor device characterization to monitor the oscillation in situ. This approach not only overcomes the difficulties associated with detecting reactions in solids, but also accurately measure the oscillating ultra-low concentration ($10^{10}\sim10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$) of the interfacial charged point-defects. We propose a mechanism for the reported PDC-OR based on the Brusselator model by identifying the interfacial reactions.

Linear Dependence of Post-irradiation Input Bias Currents on Pre-irradiation Values in Silicon Bipolar Microcircuits

We find in experiments a linear dependence of ionization irradiation-induced degradations on pre-irradiation values of the input bias current in bipolar devices with simple input stages. The dependence is found to generally exist in all studied cases of different device types and different irradiation conditions. A unique behavior of the energy distribution of the interface states ($D_{it}$) under irradiation is suggested as the origin of the observed phenomenon: the generation of interface traps through the depassivation of Si-H bonds located near the pre-irradiation interface traps displays a $D_{it}$ as an enlarge of the initial $D_{it}$ and results in the general linear dependence. A more accurate damage prediction method by using the pre-irradiation values is proposed based on the observed phenomenon.

Intrinsic Wasserstein Correlation Analysis

We develop a framework of canonical correlation analysis for distribution-valued functional data within the geometry of Wasserstein spaces. Specifically, we formulate an intrinsic concept of correlation between random distributions, propose estimation methods based on functional principal component analysis (FPCA) and Tikhonov regularization, respectively, for the correlation and its corresponding weight functions, and establish the minimax convergence rates of the estimators. The key idea is to extend the framework of tensor Hilbert spaces to distribution-valued functional data to overcome the challenging issue raised by nonlinearity of Wasserstein spaces. The finite-sample performance of the proposed estimators is illustrated via simulation studies, and the practical merit is demonstrated via a study on the association of distributions of brain activities between two brain regions.

Audio-Driven Emotional Video Portraits

Despite previous success in generating audio-driven talking heads, most of the previous studies focus on the correlation between speech content and the mouth shape. Facial emotion, which is one of the most important features on natural human faces, is always neglected in their methods. In this work, we present Emotional Video Portraits (EVP), a system for synthesizing high-quality video portraits with vivid emotional dynamics driven by audios. Specifically, we propose the Cross-Reconstructed Emotion Disentanglement technique to decompose speech into two decoupled spaces, i.e., a duration-independent emotion space and a duration dependent content space. With the disentangled features, dynamic 2D emotional facial landmarks can be deduced. Then we propose the Target-Adaptive Face Synthesis technique to generate the final high-quality video portraits, by bridging the gap between the deduced landmarks and the natural head poses of target videos. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Femtosecond dynamics of a polariton bosonic cascade at room temperature

Whispering gallery modes in a microwire are characterized by a nearly equidistant energy spectrum. In the strong exciton-photon coupling regime, this system represents a bosonic cascade: a ladder of discrete energy levels that sustains stimulated transitions between neighboring steps. In this work, by using femtosecond angle-resolved spectroscopic imaging technique, the ultrafast dynamics of polaritons in a bosonic cascade based on a one-dimensional ZnO whispering gallery microcavity is explicitly visualized. Clear ladder-form build-up process from higher to lower energy branches of the polariton condensates are observed, which are well reproduced by modeling using rate equations. Moreover, the polariton parametric scattering dynamics are distinguished on a timescale of hundreds of femtoseconds. Our understanding of the femtosecond condensation and scattering dynamics paves the way towards ultrafast coherent control of polaritons at room temperature, which will make it promising for high-speed all-optical integrated applications.

PTeacher: a Computer-Aided Personalized Pronunciation Training System with Exaggerated Audio-Visual Corrective Feedback

Second language (L2) English learners often find it difficult to improve their pronunciations due to the lack of expressive and personalized corrective feedback. In this paper, we present Pronunciation Teacher (PTeacher), a Computer-Aided Pronunciation Training (CAPT) system that provides personalized exaggerated audio-visual corrective feedback for mispronunciations. Though the effectiveness of exaggerated feedback has been demonstrated, it is still unclear how to define the appropriate degrees of exaggeration when interacting with individual learners. To fill in this gap, we interview 100 L2 English learners and 22 professional native teachers to understand their needs and experiences. Three critical metrics are proposed for both learners and teachers to identify the best exaggeration levels in both audio and visual modalities. Additionally, we incorporate the personalized dynamic feedback mechanism given the English proficiency of learners. Based on the obtained insights, a comprehensive interactive pronunciation training course is designed to help L2 learners rectify mispronunciations in a more perceptible, understandable, and discriminative manner. Extensive user studies demonstrate that our system significantly promotes the learners' learning efficiency.

Pose-Controllable Talking Face Generation by Implicitly Modularized Audio-Visual Representation

While accurate lip synchronization has been achieved for arbitrary-subject audio-driven talking face generation, the problem of how to efficiently drive the head pose remains. Previous methods rely on pre-estimated structural information such as landmarks and 3D parameters, aiming to generate personalized rhythmic movements. However, the inaccuracy of such estimated information under extreme conditions would lead to degradation problems. In this paper, we propose a clean yet effective framework to generate pose-controllable talking faces. We operate on raw face images, using only a single photo as an identity reference. The key is to modularize audio-visual representations by devising an implicit low-dimension pose code. Substantially, both speech content and head pose information lie in a joint non-identity embedding space. While speech content information can be defined by learning the intrinsic synchronization between audio-visual modalities, we identify that a pose code will be complementarily learned in a modulated convolution-based reconstruction framework. Extensive experiments show that our method generates accurately lip-synced talking faces whose poses are controllable by other videos. Moreover, our model has multiple advanced capabilities including extreme view robustness and talking face frontalization. Three-Dimensional Mesh Steganography and Steganalysis: A Review

Three-dimensional (3-D) meshes are commonly used to represent virtual surfaces and volumes. Over the past decade, 3-D meshes have emerged in industrial, medical, and entertainment applications, being of large practical significance for 3-D mesh steganography and steganalysis. In this article, we provide a systematic survey of the literature on 3-D mesh steganography and steganalysis. Compared with an earlier survey [1], we propose a new taxonomy of steganographic algorithms with four categories: 1) two-state domain, 2) LSB domain, 3) permutation domain, and 4) transform domain. Regarding steganalysis algorithms, we divide them into two categories: 1) universal steganalysis and 2) specific steganalysis. For each category, the history of technical developments and the current technological level are introduced and discussed. Finally, we highlight some promising future research directions and challenges in improving the performance of 3-D mesh steganography and steganalysis.

Visually Informed Binaural Audio Generation without Binaural Audios

Stereophonic audio, especially binaural audio, plays an essential role in immersive viewing environments. Recent research has explored generating visually guided stereophonic audios supervised by multi-channel audio collections. However, due to the requirement of professional recording devices, existing datasets are limited in scale and variety, which impedes the generalization of supervised methods in real-world scenarios. In this work, we propose PseudoBinaural, an effective pipeline that is free of binaural recordings. The key insight is to carefully build pseudo visual-stereo pairs with mono data for training. Specifically, we leverage spherical harmonic decomposition and head-related impulse response (HRIR) to identify the relationship between spatial locations and received binaural audios. Then in the visual modality, corresponding visual cues of the mono data are manually placed at sound source positions to form the pairs. Compared to fully-supervised paradigms, our binaural-recording-free pipeline shows great stability in cross-dataset evaluation and achieves comparable performance under subjective preference. Moreover, combined with binaural recordings, our method is able to further boost the performance of binaural audio generation under supervised settings.

Reversible Watermarking in Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Integrity Authentication

Deep convolutional neural networks have made outstanding contributions in many fields such as computer vision in the past few years and many researchers published well-trained network for downloading. But recent studies have shown serious concerns about integrity due to model-reuse attacks and backdoor attacks. In order to protect these open-source networks, many algorithms have been proposed such as watermarking. However, these existing algorithms modify the contents of the network permanently and are not suitable for integrity authentication. In this paper, we propose a reversible watermarking algorithm for integrity authentication. Specifically, we present the reversible watermarking problem of deep convolutional neural networks and utilize the pruning theory of model compression technology to construct a host sequence used for embedding watermarking information by histogram shift. As shown in the experiments, the influence of embedding reversible watermarking on the classification performance is less than 0.5% and the parameters of the model can be fully recovered after extracting the watermarking. At the same time, the integrity of the model can be verified by applying the reversible watermarking: if the model is modified illegally, the authentication information generated by original model will be absolutely different from the extracted watermarking information.

Universal Analytic Model of Irradiation Defect Dynamics in Silica-Silicon Structures

Irradiation damage is a key physics issue for semiconductor devices under extreme environments. For decades, the ionization-irradiation-induced damage in transistors with silica-silicon structures under constant dose rate is modeled by a uniform generation of $E'$ centers in the bulk silica region and their irreversible conversion to $P_b$ centers at the silica-silicon interface. But, the traditional model fails to explain experimentally observed dependence of the defect concentrations on dose, especially at low dose rate. Here, we propose that, the generation of $E'$ is decelerated due to the dispersive diffusion of induced holes in the disordered silica and the conversion of $P_b$ is reversible due to recombination-enhanced defect reactions under irradiation. It is shown that the derived analytic model based on these new understandings can consistently explain the fundamental but puzzling dependence of the defect concentrations on dose and dose rate in a wide range.

Adversarial Examples Detection beyond Image Space

Deep neural networks have been proved that they are vulnerable to adversarial examples, which are generated by adding human-imperceptible perturbations to images. To defend these adversarial examples, various detection based methods have been proposed. However, most of them perform poorly on detecting adversarial examples with extremely slight perturbations. By exploring these adversarial examples, we find that there exists compliance between perturbations and prediction confidence, which guides us to detect few-perturbation attacks from the aspect of prediction confidence. To detect both few-perturbation attacks and large-perturbation attacks, we propose a method beyond image space by a two-stream architecture, in which the image stream focuses on the pixel artifacts and the gradient stream copes with the confidence artifacts. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods under oblivious attacks and is verified effective to defend omniscient attacks as well.

Distribution-Preserving Steganography Based on Text-to-Speech Generative Models

Steganography is the art and science of hiding secret messages in public communication so that the presence of the secret messages cannot be detected. There are two distribution-preserving steganographic frameworks, one is sampling-based and the other is compression-based. The former requires a perfect sampler which yields data following the same distribution, and the latter needs explicit distribution of generative objects. However, these two conditions are too strict even unrealistic in the traditional data environment, e.g. the distribution of natural images is hard to seize. Fortunately, generative models bring new vitality to distribution-preserving steganography, which can serve as the perfect sampler or provide the explicit distribution of generative media. Take text-to-speech generation task as an example, we propose distribution-preserving steganography based on WaveGlow and WaveNet, which corresponds to the former two categories. Steganalysis experiments and theoretical analysis are conducted to demonstrate that the proposed methods can preserve the distribution.

Cosmic Ray Boosted Sub-GeV Gravitationally Interacting Dark Matter in Direct Detection

Detections of non-gravitational interactions of massive dark matter (DM) with visible sector so far have given null results. The DM may communicate with the ordinary matter only through gravitational interaction. Besides, the majority of traditional direct detections have poor sensitivities for light DM because of the small recoil energy. Thanks to the high energy cosmic rays (CRs), the light DM can be boosted by scattering with CRs and thus may be detected in the ongoing experiments. In this work, we derive the exclusion limits on the cosmic ray boosted sub-GeV DM with gravitational mediator from the Xenon1T data. It turns out that a sizable region of such a cosmic ray boosted DM can be excluded by the current data.

LG-GAN: Label Guided Adversarial Network for Flexible Targeted Attack of Point Cloud-based Deep Networks

Deep neural networks have made tremendous progress in 3D point-cloud recognition. Recent works have shown that these 3D recognition networks are also vulnerable to adversarial samples produced from various attack methods, including optimization-based 3D Carlini-Wagner attack, gradient-based iterative fast gradient method, and skeleton-detach based point-dropping. However, after a careful analysis, these methods are either extremely slow because of the optimization/iterative scheme, or not flexible to support targeted attack of a specific category. To overcome these shortcomings, this paper proposes a novel label guided adversarial network (LG-GAN) for real-time flexible targeted point cloud attack. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first generation based 3D point cloud attack method. By feeding the original point clouds and target attack label into LG-GAN, it can learn how to deform the point clouds to mislead the recognition network into the specific label only with a single forward pass. In detail, LGGAN first leverages one multi-branch adversarial network to extract hierarchical features of the input point clouds, then incorporates the specified label information into multiple intermediate features using the label encoder. Finally, the encoded features will be fed into the coordinate reconstruction decoder to generate the target adversarial sample. By evaluating different point-cloud recognition models (e.g., PointNet, PointNet++ and DGCNN), we demonstrate that the proposed LG-GAN can support flexible targeted attack on the fly while guaranteeing good attack performance and higher efficiency simultaneously.

Mono-top signature from stop decay at the HE-LHC

Searching for the top squark (stop) is a key task to test the naturalness of SUSY. Different from stop pair production, single stop production relies on its electroweak properties and can provide some unique signatures. Following the single production process $pp \to \tilde t_1 \tildeχ^-_1 \to t \tildeχ^0_1 \tildeχ^-_1$, the top quark has two decay channels: leptonic channel and hadronic channel. In this paper, we probe the observability of these two channels in a simplified MSSM scenario. We find that, at the 27 TeV LHC with the integrated luminosity of ${\cal L} = 15~\text{ab}^{-1}$, $m_{\tilde{t}_1}<1900$ GeV and $μ<750$ GeV can be excluded at $2σ$ through the leptonic mono-top channel, while $m_{\tilde{t}_1}<1200$ GeV and $μ<350$ GeV can be excluded at $2σ$ through the hadronic channel.

Ultra-Slow Dynamic Annealing of Neutron-induced Defects in n-type Silicon: Role of Charge Carriers

Neutron bombardments with equivalent fluence (1$\times$10$^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$) and different fluxes ($2.5\times$10$^5$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ to $1\times$10$^7$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$) have been performed on three kinds of bipolar devices with n-type silicon as active regions. The measured increase of base currents and input bias currents are found to decrease with increasing neutron flux, implying that the strength of the dynamic annealing of divacancy defects in n-type silicon follows a positive flux dependence. Such a flux dependence is the same as that observed in ions implantation using protons, but the evident flux sensitivity in our experiment is 4 orders of magnitude lower than that of proton bombardment, despite the similarity in the masses and energies of the two particles. The huge discrepancy of flux range is attributed to the presence of vast charge carriers in proton bombardments, which strongly accelerate the dynamic annealing of defects by enhancing the diffusion velocity of Si interstitials and dissociation rate of defect clusters. Our work would contribute to the understanding of the defect annealing processes in silicon.
