Theoretical Study of Inelastic Processes in Collisions of Y and Y$^+$ with Hydrogen Atom

Utilizing a simplified quantum model approach, the low-energy inelastic collision processes between yttrium atoms (ions) and hydrogen atoms have been studied. Rate coefficients corresponding to the mutual neutralization, ion-pair formation, excitation, and de-excitation processes for the above collision systems have been provided in the temperature range of 1000-10000K. 3 ionic states and 73 covalent states are considered in calculations for the collisions of yttrium atoms with hydrogen atoms, which include 6 molecular symmetries and 4074 partial inelastic reaction processes. For the collisions of yttrium ions with hydrogen atoms, 1 ionic state and 116 covalent states are included, which related to 3 molecular symmetries and 13572 partial inelastic collision processes. It is found that the rate coefficients for the mutual neutralization process have a maximum at T = 6000K, which is an order of magnitude higher than those of other processes. Notably, the positions of optimal windows for the collisions of yttrium atoms and ions with hydrogen atoms are found near electronic binding energy -2eV (Y) and -4.4eV (Y$^+$), respectively. The scattering channels located in or near these optimal windows have intermediate-to-large rate coefficients (greater than $10^{-12}$ cm$^3$s$^{-1}$). The reported data should be useful in the study of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium modeling.

FSD V2: Improving Fully Sparse 3D Object Detection with Virtual Voxels

LiDAR-based fully sparse architecture has garnered increasing attention. FSDv1 stands out as a representative work, achieving impressive efficacy and efficiency, albeit with intricate structures and handcrafted designs. In this paper, we present FSDv2, an evolution that aims to simplify the previous FSDv1 while eliminating the inductive bias introduced by its handcrafted instance-level representation, thus promoting better general applicability. To this end, we introduce the concept of \textbf{virtual voxels}, which takes over the clustering-based instance segmentation in FSDv1. Virtual voxels not only address the notorious issue of the Center Feature Missing problem in fully sparse detectors but also endow the framework with a more elegant and streamlined approach. Consequently, we develop a suite of components to complement the virtual voxel concept, including a virtual voxel encoder, a virtual voxel mixer, and a virtual voxel assignment strategy. Through empirical validation, we demonstrate that the virtual voxel mechanism is functionally similar to the handcrafted clustering in FSDv1 while being more general. We conduct experiments on three large-scale datasets: Waymo Open Dataset, Argoverse 2 dataset, and nuScenes dataset. Our results showcase state-of-the-art performance on all three datasets, highlighting the superiority of FSDv2 in long-range scenarios and its general applicability to achieve competitive performance across diverse scenarios. Moreover, we provide comprehensive experimental analysis to elucidate the workings of FSDv2. To foster reproducibility and further research, we have open-sourced FSDv2 at https://github.com/tusen-ai/SST.

Visualizing and manipulating chiral interface states in a moiré quantum anomalous Hall insulator

Moiré systems made from stacked two-dimensional materials host novel correlated and topological states that can be electrically controlled via applied gate voltages. We have used this technique to manipulate Chern domains in an interaction-driven quantum anomalous Hall insulator made from twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBLG). This has allowed the wavefunction of chiral interface states to be directly imaged using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). To accomplish this tMBLG carrier concentration was tuned to stabilize neighboring domains of opposite Chern number, thus providing topological interfaces completely devoid of any structural boundaries. STM tip pulse-induced quantum dots were utilized to induce new Chern domains and thereby create new chiral interface states with tunable chirality at predetermined locations. Theoretical analysis confirms the chiral nature of observed interface states and enables the determination of the characteristic length scale of valley polarization reversal across neighboring tMBLG Chern domains. tMBLG is shown to be a useful platform for imaging the exotic topological properties of correlated moiré systems.

Surfaces in which every point sounds the same

We address a maximally structured case of the question, "Can you hear your location on a manifold," posed in arXiv:2304.04659 for dimension $2$. In short, we show that if a compact surface without boundary sounds the same at every point, then the surface has a transitive action by the isometry group. In the process, we show that you can hear your location on Klein bottles and that you can hear the lengths and multiplicities of looping geodesics on compact hyperbolic quotients.

SAR-NeRF: Neural Radiance Fields for Synthetic Aperture Radar Multi-View Representation

SAR images are highly sensitive to observation configurations, and they exhibit significant variations across different viewing angles, making it challenging to represent and learn their anisotropic features. As a result, deep learning methods often generalize poorly across different view angles. Inspired by the concept of neural radiance fields (NeRF), this study combines SAR imaging mechanisms with neural networks to propose a novel NeRF model for SAR image generation. Following the mapping and projection pinciples, a set of SAR images is modeled implicitly as a function of attenuation coefficients and scattering intensities in the 3D imaging space through a differentiable rendering equation. SAR-NeRF is then constructed to learn the distribution of attenuation coefficients and scattering intensities of voxels, where the vectorized form of 3D voxel SAR rendering equation and the sampling relationship between the 3D space voxels and the 2D view ray grids are analytically derived. Through quantitative experiments on various datasets, we thoroughly assess the multi-view representation and generalization capabilities of SAR-NeRF. Additionally, it is found that SAR-NeRF augumented dataset can significantly improve SAR target classification performance under few-shot learning setup, where a 10-type classification accuracy of 91.6\% can be achieved by using only 12 images per class.

Thermodynamic behavior of correlated electron-hole fluids in van der Waals heterostructures

Coupled two-dimensional electron-hole bilayers provide a unique platform to study strongly correlated Bose-Fermi mixtures in condensed matter. Electrons and holes in spatially separated layers can bind to form interlayer excitons, composite Bosons expected to support high-temperature exciton superfluids. The interlayer excitons can also interact strongly with excess charge carriers when electron and hole densities are unequal. Here, we use optical spectroscopy to quantitatively probe the local thermodynamic properties of strongly correlated electron-hole fluids in MoSe2/hBN/WSe2 heterostructures. We observe a discontinuity in the electron and hole chemical potentials at matched electron and hole densities, a definitive signature of an excitonic insulator ground state. The excitonic insulator is stable up to a Mott density of ~$0.8\times {10}^{12} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ and has a thermal ionization temperature of ~70 K. The density dependence of the electron, hole, and exciton chemical potentials reveals strong correlation effects across the phase diagram. Compared with a non-interacting uniform charge distribution, the correlation effects lead to significant attractive exciton-exciton and exciton-charge interactions in the electron-hole fluid. Our work highlights the unique quantum behavior that can emerge in strongly correlated electron-hole systems.

Frame Fusion with Vehicle Motion Prediction for 3D Object Detection

In LiDAR-based 3D detection, history point clouds contain rich temporal information helpful for future prediction. In the same way, history detections should contribute to future detections. In this paper, we propose a detection enhancement method, namely FrameFusion, which improves 3D object detection results by fusing history frames. In FrameFusion, we ''forward'' history frames to the current frame and apply weighted Non-Maximum-Suppression on dense bounding boxes to obtain a fused frame with merged boxes. To ''forward'' frames, we use vehicle motion models to estimate the future pose of the bounding boxes. However, the commonly used constant velocity model fails naturally on turning vehicles, so we explore two vehicle motion models to address this issue. On Waymo Open Dataset, our FrameFusion method consistently improves the performance of various 3D detectors by about $2$ vehicle level 2 APH with negligible latency and slightly enhances the performance of the temporal fusion method MPPNet. We also conduct extensive experiments on motion model selection.

Ambarzumyan-type theorem for the Sturm-Liouville operator on the lasso graph

We consider the Sturm-Liouville operator on the lasso graph with a segment and a loop joined at one point, which has arbitrary length. The Ambarzumyan's theorem for the operator is proved, which says that if the eigenvalues of the operator coincide with those of the zero potential, then the potential is zero.

Imaging Moiré Excited States with Photocurrent Tunneling Microscopy

Moiré superlattices provide a highly tunable and versatile platform to explore novel quantum phases and exotic excited states ranging from correlated insulators1-17 to moiré excitons7-10,18. Scanning tunneling microscopy has played a key role in probing microscopic behaviors of the moiré correlated ground states at the atomic scale1,11-15,19. Atomic-resolution imaging of quantum excited state in moiré heterostructures, however, has been an outstanding experimental challenge. Here we develop a novel photocurrent tunneling microscopy by combining laser excitation and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (laser-STM) to directly visualize the electron and hole distribution within the photoexcited moiré exciton in a twisted bilayer WS2 (t-WS2). We observe that the tunneling photocurrent alternates between positive and negative polarities at different locations within a single moiré unit cell. This alternating photocurrent originates from the exotic in-plane charge-transfer (ICT) moiré exciton in the t-WS2 that emerges from the competition between the electron-hole Coulomb interaction and the moiré potential landscape. Our photocurrent maps are in excellent agreement with our GW-BSE calculations for excitonic states in t-WS2. The photocurrent tunneling microscopy creates new opportunities for exploring photoexcited non-equilibrium moiré phenomena at the atomic scale.

Inverse problems for Dirac operators with a constant delay less than half of the interval

In this work, we consider Dirac-type operators with a constant delay less than half of the interval and not less than two-fifths of the interval. For our considered Dirac-type operators, two inverse spectral problems are studied. Specifically, reconstruction of two complex $L_{2}$-potentials is studied from complete spectra of two boundary value problems with one common Dirichlet boundary condition and Neumann boundary condition, respectively. We give answers to the full range of questions usually raised in the inverse spectral theory. That is, we give uniqueness, necessary and sufficient conditions of the solvability, reconstruction algorithm and uniform stability for our considered inverse problems.

Incomplete inverse problem for Dirac operator with constant delay

In this work, we consider Dirac-type operators with a constant delay less than two-fifths of the interval and not less than one-third of the interval. For our considered Dirac-type operators, an incomplete inverse spectral problem is studied. Specifically, when two complex potentials are known a priori on a certain subinterval, reconstruction of the two potentials on the entire interval is studied from complete spectra of two boundary value problems with one common boundary condition. The uniqueness of the solution of the inverse problem is proved. A constructive method is developed for the solution of the inverse problem.

Analysis of nonconforming IFE methods and a new scheme for elliptic interface problems

In this paper, an important discovery has been found for nonconforming immersed finite element (IFE) methods using the integral values on edges as degrees of freedom for solving elliptic interface problems. We show that those IFE methods without penalties are not guaranteed to converge optimally if the tangential derivative of the exact solution and the jump of the coefficient are not zero on the interface. A nontrivial counter example is also provided to support our theoretical analysis. To recover the optimal convergence rates, we develop a new nonconforming IFE method with additional terms locally on interface edges. The new method is parameter-free which removes the limitation of the conventional partially penalized IFE method. We show the IFE basis functions are unisolvent on arbitrary triangles which is not considered in the literature. Furthermore, different from multipoint Taylor expansions, we derive the optimal approximation capabilities of both the Crouzeix-Raviart and the rotated-$Q_1$ IFE spaces via a unified approach which can handle the case of variable coefficients easily. Finally, optimal error estimates in both $H^1$- and $L^2$- norms are proved and confirmed with numerical experiments.

Magnetic field stabilized Wigner crystal states in a graphene moiré superlattice

Wigner crystals are predicted as the crystallization of the dilute electron gas moving in a uniform background when the electron-electron Coulomb energy dominates the kinetic energy. The Wigner crystal has previously been observed in the ultraclean two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) present on the surface of liquid helium and in semiconductor quantum wells at high magnetic field. More recently, Wigner crystals have also been reported in WS2/WSe2 moiré heterostructures. ABC-stacked trilayer graphene on boron nitride (ABC-TLG/hBN) moiré superlattices provide a unique tunable platform to explore Wigner crystal states where the electron correlation can be controlled by electric and magnetic field. Here we report the observation of magnetic field stabilized Wigner crystal states in a ABC-TLG/hBN moiré superlattice. We show that correlated insulating states emerge at multiple fractional and integer fillings corresponding to v = 1/3, 2/3, 1, 4/3, 5/3 and 2 electrons per moiré lattice site under a magnetic field. These correlated insulating states can be attributed to generalized Mott states for the integer fillings (v = 1, 2) and generalized Wigner crystal states for the fractional fillings (v = 1/3, 2/3, 4/3, 5/3). The generalized Wigner crystal states are stabilized by a vertical magnetic field, and they are strongest at one magnetic flux quantum per three moiré superlattices. The correlated insulating states at v = 2 persists up to 30 Tesla, which can be described by a Mott-Hofstadter transition at high magnetic field. The tunable Mott and Wigner crystal states in the ABC-TLG/hBN highlight the opportunities to discover new correlated quantum phases due to the interplay between the magnetic field and moiré flatbands.

Local spectroscopy of a gate-switchable moiré quantum anomalous Hall insulator

In recent years, correlated insulating states, unconventional superconductivity, and topologically non-trivial phases have all been observed in several moiré heterostructures. However, understanding of the physical mechanisms behind these phenomena is hampered by the lack of local electronic structure data. Here, we use scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy to demonstrate how the interplay between correlation, topology, and local atomic structure determines the behaviour of electron-doped twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene. Through gate- and magnetic field-dependent measurements, we observe local spectroscopic signatures indicating a quantum anomalous Hall insulating state with a total Chern number of $\pm 2$ at a doping level of three electrons per moiré unit cell. We show that the sign of the Chern number and associated magnetism can be electrostatically switched only over a limited range of twist angle and sample hetero-strain values. This results from a competition between the orbital magnetization of filled bulk bands and chiral edge states, which is sensitive to strain-induced distortions in the moiré superlattice.

Kähler-Ricci flow on $\mathbf G$-spherical Fano manifolds

We prove that the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of Kähler-Ricci flow on a $\mathbf G$-spherical Fano manifold $X$ is a $\mathbf G$-spherical $\mathbb Q$-Fano variety $X_{\infty}$, which admits a (singular) Kähler-Ricci soliton. Moreover, the $\mathbf G$-spherical variety structure of $X_{\infty}$ can be constructed as a center of torus $\mathbb C^*$-degeneration of $X$ induced by an element in the Lie algebra of Cartan torus of $\mathbf G$.

Once Detected, Never Lost: Surpassing Human Performance in Offline LiDAR based 3D Object Detection

This paper aims for high-performance offline LiDAR-based 3D object detection. We first observe that experienced human annotators annotate objects from a track-centric perspective. They first label the objects with clear shapes in a track, and then leverage the temporal coherence to infer the annotations of obscure objects. Drawing inspiration from this, we propose a high-performance offline detector in a track-centric perspective instead of the conventional object-centric perspective. Our method features a bidirectional tracking module and a track-centric learning module. Such a design allows our detector to infer and refine a complete track once the object is detected at a certain moment. We refer to this characteristic as "onCe detecTed, neveR Lost" and name the proposed system CTRL. Extensive experiments demonstrate the remarkable performance of our method, surpassing the human-level annotating accuracy and the previous state-of-the-art methods in the highly competitive Waymo Open Dataset without model ensemble. The code will be made publicly available at https://github.com/tusen-ai/SST.

CoReFace: Sample-Guided Contrastive Regularization for Deep Face Recognition

The discriminability of feature representation is the key to open-set face recognition. Previous methods rely on the learnable weights of the classification layer that represent the identities. However, the evaluation process learns no identity representation and drops the classifier from training. This inconsistency could confuse the feature encoder in understanding the evaluation goal and hinder the effect of identity-based methods. To alleviate the above problem, we propose a novel approach namely Contrastive Regularization for Face recognition (CoReFace) to apply image-level regularization in feature representation learning. Specifically, we employ sample-guided contrastive learning to regularize the training with the image-image relationship directly, which is consistent with the evaluation process. To integrate contrastive learning into face recognition, we augment embeddings instead of images to avoid the image quality degradation. Then, we propose a novel contrastive loss for the representation distribution by incorporating an adaptive margin and a supervised contrastive mask to generate steady loss values and avoid the collision with the classification supervision signal. Finally, we discover and solve the semantically repetitive signal problem in contrastive learning by exploring new pair coupling protocols. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficacy and efficiency of our CoReFace which is highly competitive with the state-of-the-art approaches.
