Action Pick-up in Dynamic Action Space Reinforcement Learning

Most reinforcement learning algorithms are based on a key assumption that Markov decision processes (MDPs) are stationary. However, non-stationary MDPs with dynamic action space are omnipresent in real-world scenarios. Yet problems of dynamic action space reinforcement learning have been studied by many previous works, how to choose valuable actions from new and unseen actions to improve learning efficiency remains unaddressed. To tackle this problem, we propose an intelligent Action Pick-up (AP) algorithm to autonomously choose valuable actions that are most likely to boost performance from a set of new actions. In this paper, we first theoretically analyze and find that a prior optimal policy plays an important role in action pick-up by providing useful knowledge and experience. Then, we design two different AP methods: frequency-based global method and state clustering-based local method, based on the prior optimal policy. Finally, we evaluate the AP on two simulated but challenging environments where action spaces vary over time. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed AP has advantages over baselines in learning efficiency.

Blind Search of The Solar Neighborhood Galactic Disk within 5kpc: 1,179 new Star clusters found in Gaia DR3

Studying open clusters (OCs) is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the structure and evolution of the Milky Way. Many previous studies have systematically searched for OCs near the solar system within 1.2 kpc or 20 degrees of galactic latitude. However, few studies searched for OCs at higher galactic latitudes and deeper distances. In this study, based on a hybrid unsupervised clustering algorithm (Friends-of-Friends and pyUPMASK) and a binary classification algorithm (Random Forest), we extended the search region (i.e., galactic latitude |b|>=20 degrees) and performed a fine-grained blind search of Galactic clusters in Gaia DR3. After cross-matching, the newly discovered cluster candidates are fitted using isochrone fitting to estimate the main physical parameters (age and metallicity) of these clusters. These cluster candidates were then checked using manual visual inspection. Their statistical properties were compared with previously exposed cluster catalogs as well. In the end, we found 1,179 new clusters with considerable confidence within 5kpc.

Effect of AC current annealing on the microstructure, magnetism and magnetoimpedance of CoFeSiBNb$_3$ microfibers

This paper systematically studies the changes in the microstructure and magnetic properties of CoFeSiBNb$_3$ metallic microfibers before and after AC annealing. The influence of current intensity on the magneto-impedance (MI) effect of the microfibers was analyzed and the microstructure changes of the microfibers before and after annealing were explored by means of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Using this data, the mechanism of current annealing to improve the MI characteristics was further revealed. The results show that the surface of the CoFeSiBNb$_3$ metallic microfibers after AC current annealing is smooth and continuous; its general magnetic properties and MI ratio increase at first with current intensity and then decrease at higher intensities. During the current annealing process, Joule heat eliminates residual stresses in the microfibers while forming atomically ordered micro-domains, which improves the degree of its organizational order. Meanwhile, a stable toroidal magnetic field is generated, which promotes the distribution of the magnetic domain structure of the microfibers, thereby improving the MI effect.

Butterfly: Multiple Reference Frames Feature Propagation Mechanism for Neural Video Compression

Using more reference frames can significantly improve the compression efficiency in neural video compression. However, in low-latency scenarios, most existing neural video compression frameworks usually use the previous one frame as reference. Or a few frameworks which use the previous multiple frames as reference only adopt a simple multi-reference frames propagation mechanism. In this paper, we present a more reasonable multi-reference frames propagation mechanism for neural video compression, called butterfly multi-reference frame propagation mechanism (Butterfly), which allows a more effective feature fusion of multi-reference frames. By this, we can generate more accurate temporal context conditional prior for Contextual Coding Module. Besides, when the number of decoded frames does not meet the required number of reference frames, we duplicate the nearest reference frame to achieve the requirement, which is better than duplicating the furthest one. Experiment results show that our method can significantly outperform the previous state-of-the-art (SOTA), and our neural codec can achieve -7.6% bitrate save on HEVC Class D dataset when compares with our base single-reference frame model with the same compression configuration.

New measurement of the elemental fragmentation cross sections of 218 MeV/nucleon 28 Si on a carbon target

Elemental fragmentation cross sections (EFCSs) of stable and unstable nuclides have been investigated with various projectile-target combinations at a wide range of incident energies. These data are critical to constrain and develop the theoretical reaction models and to study the propagation of galactic cosmic rays (GCR). In this work, we present a new EFCS measurement for $^{28}$Si on carbon at 218~MeV/nucleon performed at the Heavy Ion Research Facility (HIRFL-CSR) complex in Lanzhou. The impact of the target thickness has been well corrected to derive an accurate EFCS. Our present results with charge changes $ΔZ$ = 1-6 are compared to the previous measurements and to the predictions from the models modified EPAX2, EPAX3, FRACS, ABRABLA07, NUCFRG2, and IQMD coupled with GEMINI (IQMD+GEMINI). All the models fail to describe the odd-even staggering strength in the elemental distribution, with the exception of the IQMD+GEMINI model, which can reproduce the EFCSs with an accuracy of better than 3.5\% for $ΔZ\leq5$. The IQMD+GEMINI analysis shows that the odd-even staggering in EFCSs occurs in the sequential statistical decay stage rather than in the initial dynamical collision stage. This offers a reasonable approach to understand the underlying mechanism of fragmentation reactions.

LISC Catalog of Open Clusters.III. 83 Newly found Galactic disk open clusters using Gaia EDR3

As groups of coeval stars born from the same molecular cloud, an Open cluster (OC) is an ideal laboratory for studying the structure and dynamical evolution of the Milky Way. The release of High-Precision Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) and modern machine-learning methods offer unprecedented opportunities to identify OCs. In this study, we extended conventional HDBSCAN (e-HDBSCAN) for searching for new OCs in Gaia EDR3. A pipeline was developed based on the parallel computing technique to blindly search for open clusters from Gaia EDR3 within Galactic latitudes $\left| b \right|$ $<$25 $^\circ$. As a result, we obtained 3787 star clusters, of which 83 new OCs were reported after cross-match and visual inspection. At the same time, the main star cluster parameters are estimated by colour-magnitude diagram fitting. The study significantly increases the sample size and physical parameters of open clusters in the catalogue of OCs. It shows the incompleteness of the census of OCs across our Galaxy.

Joint Task Offloading and Cache Placement for Energy-Efficient Mobile Edge Computing Systems

This letter investigates a cache-enabled multiuser mobile edge computing (MEC) system with dynamic task arrivals, taking into account the impact of proactive cache placement on the system's overall energy consumption. We consider that an access point (AP) schedules a wireless device (WD) to offload computational tasks while executing the tasks of a finite library in the \emph{task caching} phase, such that the nearby WDs with the same task request arriving later can directly download the task results in the \emph{task arrival and execution} phase. We aim for minimizing the system's weighted-sum energy over a finite-time horizon, by jointly optimizing the task caching decision and the MEC execution of the AP, and local computing as well as task offloading of the WDs at each time slot, subject to caching capacity, task causality, and completion deadline constraints. The formulated design problem is a mixed-integer nonlinear program. Under the assumption of fully predicable task arrivals, we first propose a branch-and-bound (BnB) based method to obtain the optimal offline solution. Next, we propose two low-complexity schemes based on convex relaxation and task-popularity, respectively. Finally, numerical results show the benefit of the proposed schemes over existing benchmark schemes.

Simulated sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy database of lithium thiophosphate solid electrolytes

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a premier technique for materials characterization, providing key information about the local chemical environment of the absorber atom. In this work, we develop a database of sulfur K-edge XAS spectra of crystalline and amorphous lithium thiophosphate materials based on the atomic structures reported in Chem. Mater., 34, 6702 (2022). The XAS database is based on simulations using the excited electron and core-hole pseudopotential approach implemented in the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package. Our database contains 2681 S K-edge XAS spectra for 66 crystalline and glassy structure models, making it the largest collection of first-principles computational XAS spectra for glass/ceramic lithium thiophosphates to date. This database can be used to correlate S spectral features with distinct S species based on their local coordination and short-range ordering in sulfide-based solid electrolytes. The data is openly distributed via the Materials Cloud, allowing researchers to access it for free and use it for further analysis, such as spectral fingerprinting, matching with experiments, and developing machine learning models.

Phason-mediated interlayer exciton diffusion in WS2/WSe2 moiré heterostructure

Moiré potentials in two-dimensional materials have been proven to be of fundamental importance to fully understand the electronic structure of van der Waals heterostructures, from superconductivity to correlated excitonic states. However, understanding how the moiré phonons, so-called phasons, affect the properties of the system still remains an uncharted territory. In this work, we demonstrate how phasons are integral to properly describing and understanding low-temperature interlayer exciton diffusion in WS2/WSe2 heterostructure. We perform photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy to understand how the coupling between the layers, affected by their relative orientation, impacts the excitonic properties of the system. Samples fabricated with stacking angles of 0° and 60° are investigated taking into account the stacking angle dependence of the two common moiré potential profiles. Additionally, we present spatially and time-resolved exciton diffusion measurements, looking at the photoluminescence emission in a temperature range from 30 K to 250 K. An accurate potential for the two configurations are computed via density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Finally, we perform molecular dynamics simulation in order to visualize the phasons motion, estimating the phason speed at different temperatures, providing novel insights into the mechanics of exciton propagation at low temperatures that cannot be explained within the frame of classical exciton diffusion alone.

Quasi-periodic Variations of Coronal Mass Ejections with Different Angular Widths

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are energetic expulsions of organized magnetic features from the Sun. The study of CME quasi-periodicity helps establish a possible relationship between CMEs, solar flares, and geomagnetic disturbances. We used the angular width of CMEs as a criterion for classifying the CMEs in the study. Based on 25 years of observational data, we systematically analyzed the quasi-periodic variations corresponding to the CME occurrence rate of different angular widths in the northern and southern hemispheres, using frequency and time-frequency analysis methods. There are various periods for CMEs of different angular widths: 9 months, 1.7 years, and 3.3-4.3 years. Compared with previous studies based on the occurrence rate of CMEs, we obtained the same periods of 1.2(+-0.01) months, 3.1(+-0.04) months, ~6.1(+-0.4) months, 1.2(+-0.1) years, and 2.4(+-0.4) years. We also found additional periods of all CMEs that appear only in one hemisphere or during a specific solar cycle. For example, 7.1(+-0.2) months and 4.1(+-0.2) years in the northern hemisphere, 1(+-0.004) months, 5.9(+-0.2) months, 1(+-0.1) years, 1.4(+-0.1) years, and 2.4(+-0.4) years in the southern hemisphere, 6.1(+-0.4) months in solar cycle 23 (SC23) and 6.1(+-0.4) months, 1.2(+-0.1) years, and 3.7(+-0.2) years in solar cycle 24 (SC24). The analysis shows that quasi-periodic variations of the CMEs are a link among oscillations in coronal magnetic activity, solar flare eruptions, and interplanetary space.

Towards A Unified Conformer Structure: from ASR to ASV Task

Transformer has achieved extraordinary performance in Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision tasks thanks to its powerful self-attention mechanism, and its variant Conformer has become a state-of-the-art architecture in the field of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). However, the main-stream architecture for Automatic Speaker Verification (ASV) is convolutional Neural Networks, and there is still much room for research on the Conformer based ASV. In this paper, firstly, we modify the Conformer architecture from ASR to ASV with very minor changes. Length-Scaled Attention (LSA) method and Sharpness-Aware Minimizationis (SAM) are adopted to improve model generalization. Experiments conducted on VoxCeleb and CN-Celeb show that our Conformer based ASV achieves competitive performance compared with the popular ECAPA-TDNN. Secondly, inspired by the transfer learning strategy, ASV Conformer is natural to be initialized from the pretrained ASR model. Via parameter transferring, self-attention mechanism could better focus on the relationship between sequence features, brings about 11% relative improvement in EER on test set of VoxCeleb and CN-Celeb, which reveals the potential of Conformer to unify ASV and ASR task. Finally, we provide a runtime in ASV-Subtools to evaluate its inference speed in production scenario. Our code is released at https://github.com/Snowdar/asv-subtools/tree/master/doc/papers/conformer.md.

Super Sparse 3D Object Detection

As the perception range of LiDAR expands, LiDAR-based 3D object detection contributes ever-increasingly to the long-range perception in autonomous driving. Mainstream 3D object detectors often build dense feature maps, where the cost is quadratic to the perception range, making them hardly scale up to the long-range settings. To enable efficient long-range detection, we first propose a fully sparse object detector termed FSD. FSD is built upon the general sparse voxel encoder and a novel sparse instance recognition (SIR) module. SIR groups the points into instances and applies highly-efficient instance-wise feature extraction. The instance-wise grouping sidesteps the issue of the center feature missing, which hinders the design of the fully sparse architecture. To further enjoy the benefit of fully sparse characteristic, we leverage temporal information to remove data redundancy and propose a super sparse detector named FSD++. FSD++ first generates residual points, which indicate the point changes between consecutive frames. The residual points, along with a few previous foreground points, form the super sparse input data, greatly reducing data redundancy and computational overhead. We comprehensively analyze our method on the large-scale Waymo Open Dataset, and state-of-the-art performance is reported. To showcase the superiority of our method in long-range detection, we also conduct experiments on Argoverse 2 Dataset, where the perception range ($200m$) is much larger than Waymo Open Dataset ($75m$). Code is open-sourced at https://github.com/tusen-ai/SST.

Identify 46 New Open Clusters Candidates In Gaia EDR3 Using pyUPMASK and Random Forest Hybrid Method

Open clusters (OCs) are regarded as tracers to understand stellar evolution theory and validate stellar models. In this study, we presented a robust approach to identifying OCs. A hybrid method of pyUPMASK and RF is first used to remove field stars and determine more reliable members. An identification model based on the RF algorithm built based on 3714 OC samples from Gaia DR2 and EDR3 is then applied to identify OC candidates. The OC candidates are obtained after isochrone fitting, the advanced stellar population synthesis (ASPS) model fitting, and visual inspection. Using the proposed approach, we revisited 868 candidates and preliminarily clustered them by the friends-of-friends algorithm in Gaia EDR3. Excluding the open clusters that have already been reported, we focused on the remaining 300 unknown candidates. From high to low fitting quality, these unrevealed candidates were further classified into Class A (59), Class B (21), and Class C (220), respectively. As a result, 46 new reliable open cluster candidates among classes A and B are identified after visual inspection.

Decision-making at Unsignalized Intersection for Autonomous Vehicles: Left-turn Maneuver with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Decision-making module enables autonomous vehicles to reach appropriate maneuvers in the complex urban environments, especially the intersection situations. This work proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based left-turn decision-making framework at unsignalized intersection for autonomous vehicles. The objective of the studied automated vehicle is to make an efficient and safe left-turn maneuver at a four-way unsignalized intersection. The exploited DRL methods include deep Q-learning (DQL) and double DQL. Simulation results indicate that the presented decision-making strategy could efficaciously reduce the collision rate and improve transport efficiency. This work also reveals that the constructed left-turn control structure has a great potential to be applied in real-time.

Charge transfer dynamics in MoSe$_{2}$/hBN/WSe$_{2}$ heterostructures

Ultrafast charge transfer processes provide a facile way to create interlayer excitons in directly contacted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) layers. More sophisticated heterostructures composed of TMD/hBN/TMD enable new ways to control interlayer exciton properties and achieve novel exciton phenomena, such as exciton insulators and condensates, where longer lifetimes are desired. In this work, we experimentally study the charge transfer dynamics in a heterostructure composed of a 1 nm thick hBN spacer between MoSe$_{2}$ and WSe$_{2}$ monolayers. We observe the hole transfer from MoSe$_{2}$ to WSe$_{2}$ through the hBN barrier with a time constant of 500 ps, which is over 3 orders of magnitude slower than that between TMD layers without a spacer. Furthermore, we observe strong competition between the interlayer charge transfer and intralayer exciton-exciton annihilation processes at high excitation densities. Our work opens possibilities to understand charge transfer pathways in TMD/hBN/TMD heterostructures for the efficient generation and control of interlayer excitons.

Weighted K-stability of $\mathbb Q$-Fano spherical varieties

Let $G$ be a connected, complex reductive Lie group and $X$ a $\mathbb Q$-Fano $G$-spherical variety. In this paper we compute the weighed non-Archimedean functionals of a $G$-equivariant normal test configurations of $X$ via combinatory data. Also we define a modified Futaki invariant with respect to the weight $g$, and give an expression in terms of intersection numbers. Finally we show the equivalence of different notations of stability and gives a stability criterion on $\mathbb Q$-Fano spherical varieties, which is also a criterion of existence of Kähler-Ricci $g$-solitons.

DART: Articulated Hand Model with Diverse Accessories and Rich Textures

Hand, the bearer of human productivity and intelligence, is receiving much attention due to the recent fever of digital twins. Among different hand morphable models, MANO has been widely used in vision and graphics community. However, MANO disregards textures and accessories, which largely limits its power to synthesize photorealistic hand data. In this paper, we extend MANO with Diverse Accessories and Rich Textures, namely DART. DART is composed of 50 daily 3D accessories which varies in appearance and shape, and 325 hand-crafted 2D texture maps covers different kinds of blemishes or make-ups. Unity GUI is also provided to generate synthetic hand data with user-defined settings, e.g., pose, camera, background, lighting, textures, and accessories. Finally, we release DARTset, which contains large-scale (800K), high-fidelity synthetic hand images, paired with perfect-aligned 3D labels. Experiments demonstrate its superiority in diversity. As a complement to existing hand datasets, DARTset boosts the generalization in both hand pose estimation and mesh recovery tasks. Raw ingredients (textures, accessories), Unity GUI, source code and DARTset are publicly available at dart2022.github.io

Learning to Decompose Visual Features with Latent Textual Prompts

Recent advances in pre-training vision-language models like CLIP have shown great potential in learning transferable visual representations. Nonetheless, for downstream inference, CLIP-like models suffer from either 1) degraded accuracy and robustness in the case of inaccurate text descriptions during retrieval-based inference (the challenge for zero-shot protocol); or 2) breaking the well-established vision-language alignment (the challenge for linear probing). To address them, we propose Decomposed Feature Prompting (DeFo). DeFo leverages a flexible number of learnable embeddings as textual input while maintaining the vision-language dual-model architecture, which enables the model to learn decomposed visual features with the help of feature-level textual prompts. We further use an additional linear layer to perform classification, allowing a scalable size of language inputs. Our empirical study shows DeFo's significance in improving the vision-language models. For example, DeFo obtains 73.2% test accuracy on ImageNet with a ResNet-50 backbone without tuning any pretrained weights of both the vision and language encoder, outperforming zero-shot CLIP by a large margin of 15.0%, and outperforming state-of-the-art vision-language prompt tuning method by 7.6%.
