Geometric involutive bases for positive dimensional polynomial ideals and SDP methods

Geometric involutive bases for polynomial systems of equations have their origin in the prolongation and projection methods of the geometers Cartan and Kuranishi for systems of PDE. They are useful for numerical ideal membership testing and the solution of polynomial systems. In this paper we further develop our symbolic-numeric methods for such bases. We give methods to explicitly extract and decrease the degree of intermediate systems and the output basis. Algorithms for the numerical computation of involutivity criteria for positive dimensional ideals are also discussed. We were also motivated by some remarkable recent work by Lasserre and collaborators who employed our prolongation projection involutive criteria as a part of their semi-definite based programming (SDP) method for identifying the real radical of zero dimensional polynomial ideals. Consequently in this paper we begin an exploration of the interaction between geometric involutive bases and these methods particularly in the positive dimensional case. Motivated by the extension of these methods to the positive dimensional case we explore the interplay between geometric involutive bases and the new SDP methods.

Vacuum Stability Bounds On Higgs Mass With Gravitational Contributions

We calculate the gravitational contributions to $ϕ^4$ theory with general $R_ξ$ gauge-fixing choice and find that the result is gauge independent. Based on weak coupling expansion of gravity and ignoring the possible higher dimensional operators from "integrating out" the impact of gravity, we study the impacts of gravitational effects on vacuum stability. New contributions to the beta function of scalar quartic coupling $\la$ by gravitational effects can modify the RGE running of $\la$ near the Planck scale. Numerical calculations show that the lower bound of higgs mass requiring absolutely vacuum stability can be relaxed for almost 0.6 to 0.8 GeV depending on the choice of top quark mass.

The lepton flavor violating signal of the charged scalar ϕ^\pm and ϕ^{\pm\pm} in photon-photon collision at the ILC

The hitherto unconstrained lepton flavor mixing, induced by the new charged scalar ϕ^\pm and ϕ^{\pm\pm} predicted by many new physics models such as higgs triplet models, may lead to the lepton flavor violating productions of τ\bar μ, τ\bar e and μ\bar e in photon-photon collision at the proposed international linear collider. In this paper, we consider the contributions of the ϕ^\pm and ϕ^{\pm\pm} in the context of the higgs triplet models to the processes γγ\to l_i\bar l_j (i, j= e, μ, τ, i\neq j) and find that they can be good channels to probe these new physics models. The lepton flavor violating processes γγ\to l_i\bar l_j (i, j= e, μ,τ,i\neq j) occur at a high rate due to the large mixing angle and the large flavor changing coupling, so, in view of the low standard model backgrounds, they may reach the detectable level of the ILC for a large part of the parameter space. Since the rates predicted by the standard model are far below the detectable level, these processes may serve as a sensitive probe for such new physics models.

Natural SUSY from SU(5) Orbifold GUT

We propose a realistic 5D orbifold GUT model that can reduce to natural (or radiative natural) supersymmetry as the low energy effective theory. Supersymmetry as well as gauge symmetry are broken by the twist boundary conditions. We find that it is non-trivial to introduce other flavor symmetry other than the $SU(2)_R$ R-symmetry. We ameliorate the tension between the small number of free parameters and the successful electroweak symmetry breaking by introducing non-minimal Kahler potentials. A large trilinear term $A_t$, which is necessary to give a 125 GeV Higgs boson, is naturally provided in our scenario. A scan under current experimental constraints shows that our model can realize natural (or radiative natural) supersymmetry. Only radiative natural supersymmetry can naturally lead to 125 GeV higgs. Additional dark matter species other than neutralino(like axion) are needed to provide enough relic density. Relatively large stop masses are necessary to give realistic higg mass in most of the parameter spaces.

Charged Higgs Production in Association With W^{\pm} at Large Hadron Colliders

Many new physics models beyond the standard model, such as the littlest higgs models and the left right twin higgs models, predict the existence of the large charged higgs couplings H^-q\bar b and H^+b\bar q, where q=t or the new vector-like heavy quark T; On the other hand, some new physics models like the littlest higgs also predict the gauge-higgs couplings. Such couplings may have rich collider phenomenology. We focus our attention on these couplings induced by the littlest higgs models and the left right twin higgs models models and consider their contributions to the production cross section for W^\pm H^\mp production at the large hadron colliders. We find that the cross sections, in the littlest higgs models, on the parton level gg \to W^\pm H^\mp and q\bar q \to W^\pm H^\mp (q=u,d,s,c,b) may reach tens of several dozen femtobarns in reasonable parameters space at the collision energy of 14 TeV and that the total cross section can even reach a few hundred femtobarns in certain favored space. While in the left right twin higgs models, the production rates are basically one order lower than these in littlest higgs. Therefore, due to the large cross sections of that in the littlest higgs, it may be possible to probe the charged higgs via this process in a large parameter space.

PS-TRUST: Provably Secure Solution for Truthful Double Spectrum Auctions

Truthful spectrum auctions have been extensively studied in recent years. Truthfulness makes bidders bid their true valuations, simplifying greatly the analysis of auctions. However, revealing one's true valuation causes severe privacy disclosure to the auctioneer and other bidders. To make things worse, previous work on secure spectrum auctions does not provide adequate security. In this paper, based on TRUST, we propose PS-TRUST, a provably secure solution for truthful double spectrum auctions. Besides maintaining the properties of truthfulness and special spectrum reuse of TRUST, PS-TRUST achieves provable security against semi-honest adversaries in the sense of cryptography. Specifically, PS-TRUST reveals nothing about the bids to anyone in the auction, except the auction result. To the best of our knowledge, PS-TRUST is the first provably secure solution for spectrum auctions. Furthermore, experimental results show that the computation and communication overhead of PS-TRUST is modest, and its practical applications are feasible.

Top and Bottom Seesaw from Supersymmetric Strong Dynamics

We propose a top and bottom seesaw model with partial composite top and bottom quarks. Such composite quarks and topcolor gauge bosons are bound states from supersymmetric strong dynamics by Seiberg duality. Supersymmetry breaking also induces the breaking of topcolor into the QCD gauge coupling. The low energy description of our model reduces to a complete non-minimal extension of the top seesaw model with bottom seesaw. The non-minimal nature is crucial for Higgs mixings and the appearance of light Higgs fields. The Higgs fields are bound states of partial composite particles with the lightest one compatible with a 125 GeV Higgs field which was discovered at the LHC.

A Cooperation Model Towards the Federated Internet of Applications

As Internet is changing from network of data into network of functionalities, a federated Internet of applications, that every application can cooperate with each other smoothly, is a natural trending topic. However, existing integration techniques did not pay enough attention to multiple control domains for participants, i.e. application providers and end-users. In this study, we advocate a global cooperation model for all the participants counts. In particular, we propose a hybrid model to manage the cooperation among applications to achieve more optimized allocation of efforts, which means users perform lighter actions and application providers concerning less uncontrollable information. In addition, we implement the required system and show a case study which demonstrates the effectiveness of this model.

ET-LDA: Joint Topic Modeling For Aligning, Analyzing and Sensemaking of Public Events and Their Twitter Feeds

Social media channels such as Twitter have emerged as popular platforms for crowds to respond to public events such as speeches, sports and debates. While this promises tremendous opportunities to understand and make sense of the reception of an event from the social media, the promises come entwined with significant technical challenges. In particular, given an event and an associated large scale collection of tweets, we need approaches to effectively align tweets and the parts of the event they refer to. This in turn raises questions about how to segment the event into smaller yet meaningful parts, and how to figure out whether a tweet is a general one about the entire event or specific one aimed at a particular segment of the event. In this work, we present ET-LDA, an effective method for aligning an event and its tweets through joint statistical modeling of topical influences from the events and their associated tweets. The model enables the automatic segmentation of the events and the characterization of tweets into two categories: (1) episodic tweets that respond specifically to the content in the segments of the events, and (2) steady tweets that respond generally about the events. We present an efficient inference method for this model, and a comprehensive evaluation of its effectiveness over existing methods. In particular, through a user study, we demonstrate that users find the topics, the segments, the alignment, and the episodic tweets discovered by ET-LDA to be of higher quality and more interesting as compared to the state-of-the-art, with improvements in the range of 18-41%.

ET-LDA: Joint Topic Modeling for Aligning Events and their Twitter Feedback

During broadcast events such as the Superbowl, the U.S. Presidential and Primary debates, etc., Twitter has become the de facto platform for crowds to share perspectives and commentaries about them. Given an event and an associated large-scale collection of tweets, there are two fundamental research problems that have been receiving increasing attention in recent years. One is to extract the topics covered by the event and the tweets; the other is to segment the event. So far these problems have been viewed separately and studied in isolation. In this work, we argue that these problems are in fact inter-dependent and should be addressed together. We develop a joint Bayesian model that performs topic modeling and event segmentation in one unified framework. We evaluate the proposed model both quantitatively and qualitatively on two large-scale tweet datasets associated with two events from different domains to show that it improves significantly over baseline models.

The Superluminal Neutrinos from Deformed Lorentz Invariance

We study two superluminal neutrino scenarios where δv\equiv (v-c)/c is a constant. To be consistent with the OPERA, Borexino, and ICARUS experiments and with the SN1987a observations, we assume that δv_ν on the Earth is about three order larger than that on the interstellar scale. To explain the theoretical challenges from the Bremsstrahlung effects and pion decays, we consider the deformed Lorentz invariance, and show that the superluminal neutrino dispersion relations can be realized properly while the modifications to the dispersion relations of the other Standard Model particles can be negligible. In addition, we propose the deformed energy and momentum conservation laws for a generic physical process. In Scenario I the momentum conservation law is preserved while the energy conservation law is deformed. In Scenario II the energy conservation law is preserved while the momentum conservation law is deformed. We present the energy and momentum conservation laws in terms of neutrino momentum in Scenario I and in terms of neutrino energy in Scenario II. In such formats, the energy and momentum conservation laws are exactly the same as those in the traditional quantum field theory with Lorentz symmetry. Thus, all the above theoretical challenges can be automatically solved. We show explicitly that the Bremsstrahlung processes are forbidden and there is no problem for pion decays.

Impurity-induced bound states in superconductors with topological order

The study of classical spins in topological insulators [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 80}, 115216 (2009)] is generalized to topological superconductors. Based on the characteristic features of the so-called $F$-function, Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian for superconductors is classified to positive, negative, and zero "gap" categories for topologically trivial and nontrivial phases of a topological superconductor as well as a BCS superconductor respectively. It is found that the $F$-function determines directly the presence or absence of localized excited states, induced by bulk classical spins and nonmagnetic impurities, in superconducting gap and their persistence with respect to impurity strength. Our results provide an alternative way to identify topologically insulating and superconducting phases in experiments while without resorting to the surface properties.

Automorphism groups of positive entropy on projective threefolds

We prove two results about the natural representation of a group G of automorphisms of a normal projective threefold X on its second cohomology. We show that if X is minimal then G, modulo a normal subgroup of null entropy, is embedded as a Zariski-dense subset in a semi-simple real linear algebraic group of real rank < 3. Next, we show that X is a complex torus if the image of G is an almost abelian group of positive rank and the kernel is infinite, unless X is equivariantly non-trivially fibred.

Supersymmetry Breaking Scalar Masses and Trilinear Soft Terms From High-Dimensional Operators in E_6 SUSY GUT

In the GmSUGRA scenario with the high-dimensional operators containing the GUT Higgs fields, we systematically studied the supersymmetry breaking scalar masses, SM fermion Yukawa coupling terms, and trilinear soft terms in the E_6 SUSY GUT model where the gauge symmetry is broken down to the SO(10)\tm U(1) gauge symmetry, SU(3)_C\times SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R gauge symmetry, SU(6)\times SU(2)_a (a={\rm L,R,X}) gauge symmetry, flipped SU(5) gauge symmetry etc. In addition, we considered the scalar and gaugino mass relations, which can be preserved from the GUT scale to the electroweak scale under one-loop RGE running, in the SU(3)_C\times SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R model arising from the E_6 model. With such relations, we may distinguish the mSUGRA and GmSUGRA scenarios if we can measure the supersymmetric particle spectrum at the LHC and ILC.

Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen Mechanism

In this paper, we propose a Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism in which non-renormalizable operators involving a GUT group and $U(1)_H$ non-singlet Higgs field are introduced. Thus the GUT gauge symmetry breaking and the generation of hierarchical flavor hierarchy have a common origin in this mechanism. In this Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, we propose universality conditions for coefficients corresponding to different contractions in the group productions. We find that the predictions in Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism for SU(5) GUT is different to that of ordinary Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism. Such Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism can be used in GUT models when ordinary Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism is no longer available. We study the application of Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism in SO(10) model. We find that realistic standard model mass hierarchy and mixings can be obtained both in SU(5) and SO(10) GUT models with such Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism.

Realistic Standard Model Fermion Mass Relations in Generalized Minimal Supergravity (GmSUGRA)

Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) usually predict wrong Standard Model (SM) fermion mass relation m_e/m_μ = m_d/m_s toward low energies. To solve this problem, we consider the Generalized Minimal Supergravity (GmSUGRA) models, which are GUTs with gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking and higher dimensional operators. Introducing non-renormalizable terms in the super- and Kähler potentials, we can obtain the correct SM fermion mass relations in the SU(5) model with GUT Higgs fields in the {\bf 24} and {\bf 75} representations, and in the SO(10) model. In the latter case the gauge symmetry is broken down to SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X U(1)_{B-L}, to flipped SU(5)X U(1)_X, or to SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L X U(1)_1 X U(1)_2. Especially, for the first time we generate the realistic SM fermion mass relation in GUTs by considering the high-dimensional operators in the Kähler potential.

SU(7) Unification of SU(3)_C*SU(4)_W* U(1)_{B-L}

We propose the SUSY SU(7) unification of the SU(3)_C* SU(4)_W* U(1)_{B-L} model. Such unification scenario has rich symmetry breaking chains in a five-dimensional orbifold. We study in detail the SUSY SU(7) symmetry breaking into SU(3)_C* SU(4)_W* U(1)_{B-L} by boundary conditions in a Randall-Sundrum background and its AdS/CFT interpretation. We find that successful gauge coupling unification can be achieved in our scenario. Gauge unification favors low left-right and unification scales with tree-level \sin^2θ_W=0.15. We use the AdS/CFT dual of the conformal supersymmetry breaking scenario to break the remaining N=1 supersymmetry. We employ AdS/CFT to reproduce the NSVZ formula and obtain the structure of the Seiberg duality in the strong coupling region for 3/2N_c<N_F<3N_C. We show that supersymmetry is indeed broken in the conformal supersymmetry breaking scenario with a vanishing singlet vacuum expectation value.
