Supersymmetry Breaking Scalar Masses and Trilinear Soft Terms in Generalized Minimal Supergravity

In the generalized minimal supergravity (GmSUGRA) scenario, we systematically study the supersymmetry breaking scalar masses, Standard Model fermion Yukawa coupling terms, and trilinear soft terms in SU(5) models with the Higgs fields in the {\bf 24} and {\bf 75} representations, and in SO(10) models where the gauge symmetry is broken down to the Pati-Salam SU(4)_C X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R gauge symmetry, SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X U(1)_{B-L} gauge symmetry, George-Glashow SU(5) X U(1)' gauge symmetry, flipped SU(5) X U(1)_X gauge symmetry, and SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L X U(1)_1 X U(1)_2 gauge symmetry. Most importantly, we for the first time consider the scalar and gaugino mass relations, which can be preserved from the unification scale to the electroweak scale under one-loop renormalization group equation running, in the SU(5) models, the Pati-Salam models and flipped SU(5) X U(1)_X models arising from SO(10) models. With such interesting relations, we may distinguish the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) and GmSUGRA scenarios if the supersymmetric particle spectrum can be measured at the LHC and ILC. Thus, it provides us with another important window of opportunity at the Planck scale.

Realistic Flipped SU(5) from Orbifold SO(10)

We propose a realistic flipped SU(5) model derived from a five-dimensional orbifold SO(10) model. The Standard Model (SM) fermion masses and mixings are explained by combining the traditional Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism with the five-dimensional wave function profiles of the SM fermions. Employing tree-level spontaneous R-symmetry breaking in the hidden sector and extra(ordinary) gauge mediation, we obtain realistic supersymmetry breaking soft mass terms with non-vanishing gaugino masses. Including the messenger fields at the intermediate scale and Kaluza-Klein states at the compactification scale, we study gauge coupling unification. We show that the SO(10) unified gauge coupling is very strong and the unification scale can be much higher than the compactification scale. We briefly discuss proton decay as well.

Low-Scale SU(4)_W Unification

We embed the minimal left-right model SU(2)_L*SU(2)_R* U(1)_{B-L} into an SU(4)_W gauge group, and break the unified group via five-dimensional S^1/(Z_2*Z_2) orbifolding. Leptons are fitted into SU(4)_W multiplets and located on a symmetry preserving O brane, while quarks are placed onto an O' brane where the symmetry is broken. This approach predicts \sin^2θ_W=0.25 for the weak mixing angle at tree level and leads to a rather low weakly (strongly) coupled unification scale of order 3*10^2 TeV (several TeV) with supersymmetry, or as low as several TeV in the non-supersymmetric case. Another symmetry breaking chain with the low-energy gauge group SU(2)_L*U(1)_{3R}*U(1)_{B-L} can also give rise to a weak mixing angle \sin^2θ_W=0.25 at tree level after gauge symmetry breaking by orbifolding. Such theories with low-scale unification have interesting phenomenological consequences.

The SU(3)_C * SU(4)_W * U(1)_{B-L} Models with Left-Right Unification

The left-right models provide an explanation for the parity asymmetry in the Standard Model (SM). To further understand the origin of the left-right symmetry, we study a partial unification model based on SU(4)_W*U(1)_{B-L} which can be broken down to the minimal left-right model either through the Higgs mechanism in four dimensions or through the five-dimensional orbifold gauge symmetry breaking with inner or outer automorphism. We scrutinize all these breaking mechanisms and find that for the orbifold breaking in five dimensions, the rank-reducing outer automorphism is better than the inner automorphism and can make the low energy theory free of the U(1)_Z anomaly. For the four-dimensional model with the Higgs mechanism, we study in detail both its structure and its typical phenomenology. It turns out that this four-dimensional scenario may predict some new phenomenology since the new mirror fermions (which are introduced in order to fill the SM fermions into SU(4)_W without anomaly) are preserved at low energy scale and mix with the SM fermions. We also examine the gauge coupling unification in each case, and discuss the possibility for unifying this partial unification group with the Pati-Salam group SU(4)_{PS} to realize a grand unification.

Pressure Raman effects and internal stress in network glasses

Raman scattering from binary GexSe1-x glasses under hydrostatic pressure shows onset of a steady increase in the frequency of modes of corner-sharing GeSe4 tetrahedral units when the external pressure P exceeds a threshold value Pc. The threshold pressure Pc(x) decreases with x in the 0.15 < x < 0.20 range, nearly vanishes in the 0.20 < x < 0.25 range, and then increases in the 0.25 < x < 1/3 range. These Pc(x) trends closely track those in the non-reversing enthalpy, DHnr(x), near glass transitions (Tgs), and in particular, both DHnr(x) and Pc(x) vanish in the reversibility window (0.20 < x < 0.25). It is suggested that Pc provides a measure of stress at the Raman active units; and its vanishing in the reversibility window suggests that these units are part of an isostatically rigid backbone. Isostaticity also accounts for the non-aging behavior of glasses observed in the reversibility window.

Virtual Effects of Split SUSY in Higgs Productions at Linear Colliders

In split supersymmetry the gauginos and higgsinos are the only supersymmetric particles possibly accessible at foreseeable colliders like the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International Linear Collider (ILC). In order to account for the cosmic dark matter measured by WMAP, these gauginos and higgsinos are stringently constrained and could be explored at the colliders through their direct productions and/or virtual effects in some processes. The clean environment and high luminosity of the ILC render the virtual effects of percent level meaningful in unraveling the new physics effects. In this work we assume split supersymmetry and calculate the virtual effects of the WMAP-allowed gauginos and higgsinos in Higgs productions e+e- -> Z h and e+e- -> ν_e \bar_ν_e h through WW fusion at the ILC. We find that the production cross section of e+e- -> Zh can be altered by a few percent in some part of the WMAP-allowed parameter space, while the correction to the WW-fusion process e+e- -> ν_e \bar_ν_e h is below 1%. Such virtual effects are correlated with the cross sections of chargino pair productions and can offer complementary information in probing split supersymmetry at the colliders.

Split Two-Higgs-Doublet Model and Neutrino Condensation

We split the two-Higgs-doublet model by assuming very different vevs for the two doublets: the vev is at weak scale (174 GeV) for the doublet Φ_1 and at neutrino-mass scale (10^{-2} \sim 10^{-3} eV) for the doublet Φ_2. Φ_1 is responsible for giving masses to all fermions except neutrinos; while Φ_2 is responsible for giving neutrino masses through its tiny vev without introducing see-saw mechanism. Among the predicted five physical scalars H, h, A^0 and H^{\pm}, the CP-even scalar h is as light as 10^{-2} \sim 10^{-3}eV while others are at weak scale. We identify h as the cosmic dark energy field and the other CP-even scalar H as the Standard Model Higgs boson; while the CP-odd A^0 and the charged H^{\pm} are the exotic scalars to be discovered at future colliders. Also we demonstrate a possible dynamical origin for the doublet Φ_2 from neutrino condensation caused by some unknown dynamics.

Dark Matter Constraints on Gaugino/Higgsino Masses in Split Supersymmetry and Their Implications at Colliders

In split supersymmetry, gauginos and Higgsinos are the only supersymmetric particles which are possibly accessible at foreseeable colliders. While the direct experimental searches, such as LEP and Tevatron experiments, gave robust lower bounds on the masses of these particles, the cosmic dark matter can give some upper bounds and thus have important implications for the searches at future colliders. In this work we scrutinize such dark matter constraints and show the allowed mass range for charginos and neutralinos (the mass eigenstates of gauginos and Higgsinos). We find that the lightest chargino must be lighter than about 1 TeV under the popular assumption M_1=M_2/2 and about 2 or 3 TeV in other cases. The corresponding production rates of the lightest chargino at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International Linear Colldier (ILC) are also shown. While in some parts of the allowed region the chargino pair production rate can be larger than 1 pb at LHC and 100 fb at the ILC, other parts of the region correspond to very small production rates and thus there is no guarantee to find the charginos of split supersymmetry at future colliders.

Gravitino dark matter from gluino late decay in split supersymmetry

In split-supersymmetry (split-SUSY), gluino is a metastable particle and thus can freeze out in the early universe. The late decay of such a long-life gluino into the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) may provide much of the cosmic dark matter content. In this work, assuming the LSP is gravitino produced from the late decay of the metastable gluino, we examine the WMAP dark matter constraints on the gluino mass. We find that to provide the full abundance of dark matter, the gluino must be heavier than about 14 TeV and thus not accessible at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Late-decaying Q-ball with BBN lifetime

In the Affleck-Dine mechanism of baryogenesis, non-topological solitons called Q-balls can be formed. In this work we study the Q-balls which decay during the Big Bang Nucleosythesis (BBN) era. We show that such late-decaying baryonic Q-balls with lifetime of about 10^3 s can provide a new developing mechanism for the BBN through a rolling baryon to photon ratio η, which can naturally explain the discrepancy of BBN prediction with the WMAP data on ^7Li abundance. For the late-decaying leptonic Q-balls with lifetime of about 10^6 s, we find that their decay product, gravitino, can serve as a dark matter candidate without overclosing the universe and, at the same time, can give an explanation of the approximate equality of dark and baryon matter densities.

Some studies on dark energy related problems

In this work we perform some studies related to dark energy. Firstly, we propose a dynamical approach to explain the dark energy content of the universe. We assume that a massless scalar field couples to the Hubble parameter with some Planck-mass suppressed interactions. This scalar field developes a Hubble parameter-dependent (thus time-dependent) vacum expectation value, which renders a time-independent relative density for dark energy and thus can explain the coincidence of the dark energy density of the universe. Secondly, we assume the dark matter particle is meta-stable and decays very lately into the dark energy scalar field. Such a conversion of matter to dark energy can give an explanation for the starting time of the accelerating expansion of the universe. Thirdly, we introduce multiple Affleck-Dine fields to the landscape scenario of dark energy in order to have the required baryon-asymmetry universe.

SuperWIMP dark matter scenario in light of WMAP

The heavy gravitinos in minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) models couple gravitionally and can naturally be the Superweakly Interacting Massive Particle (SuperWIMP). As plausible candidates for the cold dark matter in the universe, such gravitino SuperWIMPs can naturally evade the current dark matter detection experiments due to their superweak couplings. However, this scenario must subject to the constraints from the Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) predictions for light element abundances as well as the Wilkinson Mircrowave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data for the relic density. Our study shows that requiring BBN predictions to agree with the WMAP data of light element abundances can impose upper and lower mass bounds for both the gravitino and the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). From a scan over the mSUGRA parameter space subjected to the BBN constraints and the WMAP data, we find that in the neutralino NLSP case, the low tan-beta (< 40) region as well as the region accessible at CERN Large Hadron Colldier (LHC) will be severely restrained.

Supersymmetric effects in top quark decay into polarized W-boson

We investigate the one-loop supersymmetric QCD (SUSY-QCD) and electroweak (SUSY-EW) corrections to the top quark decay into a b-quark and a longitudinal or transverse W-boson. The corrections are presented in terms of the longitudinal ratio Γ(t-->W_L b)/Γ(t--> W b) and the transverse ratio Γ(t-->W_- b)/Γ(t--> W b). In most of the parameter space, both SUSY-QCD and SUSY-EW corrections to these ratios are found to be less than 1% in magnitude and they tend to have opposite signs. The corrections to the total width Γ(t-->W b) are also presented for comparison with the existing results in the literature. We find that our SUSY-EW corrections to the total width differ significantly from previous studies: the previous studies give a large correction of more than 10% in magnitude for a large part of the parameter space while our results reach only few percent at most.

Note on the asymptotic approximation of a double integral with an angular spectrum representation

In this note, we are concerned with the asymptotic approximation of a class of double integrals which can be represented as an angular spectrum superposition. These double integrals typically appear in electromagnetic scattering problems. Based on the synthetic manipulation of the method of steepest descent path, approximate expressions of the double integrals are derived in terms of the leading term of the contribution to the asymptotic expansions.
