Mass and radius formulas for low-mass neutron stars

Neutron stars, produced at the death of massive stars, are often regarded as giant neutron-rich nuclei. This picture is especially relevant for low-mass (below about solar mass) neutron stars, where non-nucleonic components are not expected to occur. Due to the saturation property of nucleonic matter, leading to the celebrated liquid-drop picture of atomic nuclei, empirical nuclear masses and radii can be approximately expressed as function of atomic mass number. It is, however, not straightforward to express masses and radii of neutron stars even in the low-mass range where the structure is determined by a balance between the pressure of neutron-rich nucleonic matter and the gravity. Such expressions would be of great use given possible simultaneous mass and radius measurements. Here we successfully construct theoretical formulas for the masses and radii of low-mass neutron stars from various models that are consistent with empirical masses and radii of stable nuclei. In this process, we discover a new equation-of-state parameter that characterizes the structure of low-mass neutron stars. This parameter, which plays a key role in connecting the mass-radius relation of the laboratory nuclei to that of the celestial objects, could be constrained from future observations of low-mass neutron stars.

Magnetars and the Chiral Plasma Instabilities

We propose a possible new mechanism for a strong and stable magnetic field of compact stars due to an instability in the presence of a chirality imbalance of electrons---the chiral plasma instability. A large chirality imbalance of electrons inevitably occurs associated with the parity-violating weak process during core collapse of supernovae. We estimate the maximal magnetic field due to this instability to be of order 10^{18} G at the core. This mechanism naturally generates a large magnetic helicity from the chiral asymmetry, which ensures the stability of the large magnetic field.

QCD phase diagram at strong coupling including auxiliary field fluctuations

We investigate the phase diagram and the mechanism for the sign problem to appear in finite density QCD at strong coupling in a combined framework of the auxiliary field Monte-Carlo (AFMC) and the chiral angle fixing (CAF) methods. When bosonizing meson hopping terms in the effective action, we need to introduce imaginary number coefficients, which leads to a complex phase in numerical simulations. By using the cut-off technique, we quantitatively show that high momentum modes of auxiliary fields mainly contribute to the weight cancellation; Cutting-off high-momentum auxiliary field modes does not modify order parameters but suppresses statistical weight cancellation, when we choose the cut-off parameter appropriately.

QCD phase diagram at finite baryon and isospin chemical potentials in Polyakov loop extended quark meson model with vector interaction

We investigate the QCD phase diagram of isospin asymmetric matter using the Polyakov loop extended quark meson (PQM) model with vector interaction. The critical point temperature is found to decrease in isospin asymmetric matter and disappear at large isospin chemical potential. We also discuss the QCD phase transition in the neutron star core. From comparison of the QCD phase diagram in PQM and corresponding baryon and isospin chemical potentials of neutron star matter in relativistic mean field models, we show that the order of the chiral phase transition in the neutron star core could be crossover because of large isospin chemical potential.

Entropy production in classical Yang-Mills theory from Glasma initial conditions

We study the thermalization process in classical Yang-Mills (CYM) field theory starting from noisy glasma-like initial conditions by investigating the initial-value sensitivity of trajectories. Kunihiro et al. linked entropy generation to the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, which gives the entropy production rate in classical chaotic systems, calculated numerically for CYM fields starting from purely random initial field configurations. In contrast, we here study glasma-like initial conditions. For small random fluctuations we obtain qualitatively similar results while no entropy increase is observed when such fluctuations are absent. We analyze the intermediate time Lyapunov spectrum for several time windows and calculate the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. We find a large number of positive Lyapunov exponents at the early stages of time evolution. Also for later times their number is a sizeable fraction of the total number of degrees of freedom. The spectrum of positive Lyapunov exponents at first changes rapidly, but then stabilizes, indicating that the dynamics of the gauge fields approaches a steady state. Thus we conclude that also for glasma-like initial conditions a significant amount of entropy is produced by classical gluon field dynamics.

Three-body couplings in RMF and its effects on hyperonic star equation of state

We develop a new relativistic mean field (RMF) model including explicit three-body couplings and apply it to hyperonic systems and neutron star matter. The recent observation of the massive mass neutron star has given us a puzzle; when strange hadrons including hyperons are taken into account, the equation of state (EOS) becomes too soft to support the observed two-solar-mass neutron star. Three-baryon repulsion is a promising ingredient to answer this puzzle. We demonstrate that it is possible to consistently explain the massive neutron star and hypernuclear data when we include three-body couplings and modify the hyperon vector couplings from the flavor SU(3) values.

Auxiliary field Monte-Carlo study of the QCD phase diagram at strong coupling

We investigate the QCD phase diagram in the strong coupling limit by using a newly developed auxiliary field Monte-Carlo (AFMC) method. Starting from an effective action in the leading order of the 1/g^2 and 1/d expansion with one species of unrooted staggered fermion, we solve the many-body problem exactly by introducing the auxiliary fields and integrating out the temporal links and quark fields. We have a sign problem in AFMC, which is different from the original one in finite density lattice QCD. For low momentum auxiliary field modes, a complex phase cancellation mechanism exists, and the sign problem is not serious on a small lattice. Compared with the mean field results, the transition temperature is found to be reduced by around 10 % and the hadron phase is found to be extended in the larger chemical potential direction by around 20 %, as observed in the monomer-dimer-polymer (MDP) simulations.

QCD Phase Diagram with 2-flavor Lattice Fermion Formulations

We propose a new framework for investigating two-flavor lattice QCD with finite temperature and density by applying the Karsten-Wilczek lattice fermion, in which a species-dependent imaginary chemical potential can reduce the number of species to two without losing chiral symmetry. This lattice discretization is useful for study on finite-(T,μ) QCD since its discrete symmetries are appropriate for the case. To show its applicability, we study strong-coupling lattice QCD with temperature and chemical potential. We derive the effective potential of the scalar meson field and obtain a critical line of the chiral phase transition, which is qualitatively consistent with the phenomenologically expected phase diagram.

Strong coupling analysis of Aoki phase in Staggered-Wilson fermions

We study strong-coupling lattice QCD with staggered-Wilson fermions, with an emphasis on the possibility of spontaneous parity breaking. We perform effective potential analysis in the strong-coupling limit. From gap equations we find the pion condensate becomes nonzero in some range of a mass parameter, which indicates the existence of the parity-broken phase. We also find massless pions and PCAC relations around the second-order phase boundary. These results suggest that we can take the chiral limit by tuning a mass parameter in lattice QCD with staggered-Wilson fermions as with the Wilson fermion.

QCD phase diagram with 2-flavor lattice fermion formulations

We propose a new framework for investigating two-flavor lattice QCD with finite temperature and density. We consider the Karsten-Wilczek fermion formulation, in which a species-dependent imaginary chemical potential term can reduce the number of species to two without losing chiral symmetry. This lattice discretization is useful for study on finite-($T$,$μ$) QCD since its discrete symmetries are appropriate for the case. To show its applicability, we study strong-coupling lattice QCD with temperature and chemical potential. We derive the effective potential of the scalar meson field and obtain a critical line of the chiral phase transition, which is qualitatively consistent with the phenomenologically expected phase diagram. We also discuss that $O(1/a)$ renormalization of imaginary chemical potential can be controlled by adjusting a parameter of a dimension-3 counterterm.

Strong-coupling Analysis of Parity Phase Structure in Staggered-Wilson Fermions

We study strong-coupling lattice QCD with staggered-Wilson fermions, with emphasis on discrete symmetries and possibility of their spontaneous breaking. We perform hopping parameter expansion and effective potential analyses in the strong-coupling limit. From gap equations we find nonzero pion condensate in some range of a mass parameter, which indicates existence of the parity-broken phase in lattice QCD with staggered-Wilson fermions. We also find massless pions and PCAC relations around second-order phase boundary. These results suggest that we can take a chiral limit by tuning a mass parameter in lattice QCD with staggered-Wilson fermions as with the Wilson fermion.

Aoki Phases in Staggered-Wilson Fermions

We investigate the parity-broken phase (Aoki phase) for staggered-Wilson fermions by using the Gross-Neveu model and the strong-coupling lattice QCD. In the both cases the gap equations indicate the parity-broken phase exists and the pion becomes massless on the phase boundaries. We also show we can take the chiral and continuum limit in the Gross-Neveu model by tuning mass and gauge-coupling parameters. This supports the idea that the staggered-Wilson fermions can be applied to the lattice QCD simulation by taking a chiral limit, as with Wilson fermions.

Phase diagram and heavy-ion collisions: Overview

The physics of the QCD phase diagram is discussed in view from heavy-ion collisions, compact astrophysical phenomena, lattice QCD and chiral effective models. We find that (T,mu_B) region probed in heavy-ion collisions and the black hole formation processes covers most of the critical point locations predicted in recent lattice QCD Monte-Carlo simulations and chiral effective models of QCD. We also discuss the consistency of the statistical model results and dynamical model description.

Hyperon Matter and Black Hole Formation in Failed Supernovae

We investigate the emergence of hyperons in black-hole-forming failed supernovae, which are caused by the dynamical collapse of nonrotating massive stars. We perform neutrino-radiation hydrodynamical simulations in general relativity adopting realistic hyperonic equation-of-state (EOS). Attractive and repulsive cases are examined for the potential of Σ hyperons. Since hyperons soften the EOS, they shorten the time interval from the bounce to black hole formation, which corresponds to the duration of neutrino emission. This effect is larger for the attractive case than the repulsive case because Σ hyperons appear more easily. In addition, we investigate the impacts of pions to find that they also promotes the recollapse towards the black hole formation.

Modification of triaxial deformation and change of spectrum in $^{25}_{\ Λ}$Mg caused by $Λ$ hyperon

The positive-parity states of $^{25}_{\ Λ}$Mg with a $Λ$ hyperon in $s$ orbit were studied with the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics for hypernuclei. We discuss two bands of $^{25}_{\ Λ}$Mg corresponding to the $K^π=0^+$ and $2^+$ bands of $^{24}$Mg. It is found that the energy of the $K^π= 2^+ \otimes Λ_s$ band is shifted up by about 200 keV compared to $^{24}$Mg. This is because the $Λ$ hyperon in $s$ orbit reduces the quadrupole deformation of the $K^π= 0^+ \otimes Λ_s$ band, while it does not change the deformation of the $K^π= 2^+ \otimes Λ_s$ band significantly.

Studying Exotic Hadrons in Heavy Ion Collisions

We investigate the possibilities of using measurements in present and future experiments on heavy ion collisions to answer some longstanding problems in hadronic physics, namely identifying hadronic molecular states and exotic hadrons with multiquark components. The yields of a selected set of exotic hadron candidates in relativistic heavy ion collisions are discussed in the coalescence model in comparison with the statistical model. We find that the yield of a hadron is typically an order of magnitude smaller when it is a compact multiquark state, compared to that of an excited hadronic state with normal quark numbers. We also find that some loosely bound hadronic molecules are formed more abundantly than the statistical model prediction by a factor of two or more. Moreover, due to the significant numbers of charm and bottom quarks produced at RHIC and even larger numbers expected at LHC, some of the proposed heavy exotic hadrons could be produced with sufficient abundance for detection, making it possible to study these new exotic hadrons in heavy ion collisions.

Strong-coupling lattice study for QCD phase diagram including both chiral and deconfinement dynamics

We investigate the QCD phase diagram by using the strong-coupling expansion of the lattice QCD with one species of staggered fermion and the Polyakov loop effective action at finite temperature (T) and quark chemical potential (mu). We derive an analytic expression of effective potential Feff including both the chiral (U(1)) and the deconfinement (Z_Nc) dynamics with finite coupling effects in the mean-field approximation. The Polyakov loop increasing rate (dl/dT) is found to have two peaks as a function of T for small quark masses. One of them is the chiral-induced peak associated with the rapid decrease of the chiral condensate. The temperature of the other peak is almost independent of the quark mass or chemical potential, and this peak is interpreted as the Z_Nc-induced peak.

Multi-quark hadrons from Heavy Ion Collisions

Identifying hadronic molecular states and/or hadrons with multi-quark components either with or without exotic quantum numbers is a long standing challenge in hadronic physics. We suggest that studying the production of these hadrons in relativistic heavy ion collisions offer a promising resolution to this problem as yields of exotic hadrons are expected to be strongly affected by their structures. Using the coalescence model for hadron production, we find that compared to the case of a non-exotic hadron with normal quark numbers, the yield of an exotic hadron is typically an order of magnitude smaller when it is a compact multi-quark state and a factor of two or more larger when it is a loosely bound hadronic molecule. We further find that due to the appreciable numbers of charm and bottom quarks produced in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and even larger numbers expected at LHC, some of the newly proposed heavy exotic states could be produced and realistically measured in these experiments.
