How localized is an extended quantum system ?

We elaborate on a geometric characterization of the electromagnetic properties of matter. A fundamental complex quantity, z_{L}, is introduced to study the localization properties of extended quantum systems. z_L, which allows us to discriminate between conducting and non-conducting thermodynamic phases, has an illuminating physical (and geometric) interpretation. Its phase can be related to the expectation value of the position operator (and a Berry phase), while its modulus is associated with quantum electric polarization fluctuations (and a quantum metric). We also study the scaling behavior of z_L in the one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model.

Superconductivity and Topological Numbers in the Hubbard Chain with Bond-Charge Interaction

We determine the quantum phase diagram of the Hubbard chain with electron-hole symmetric correlated hopping at 1/2- and 1/4-filling using geometric concepts and continuum limit field theory. The long distance behavior of various correlation functions show a very rich phase diagram with several insulating, metallic, and superconducting phases, which might be relevant to (TMTSF)$_2$X compounds. The closing of charge and spin gaps are accurately resolved as topological transitions (jumps in $π$ of Berry phases). The metallic or insulating character of each thermodynamic phase is obtained from the ground-state expectation value of a displacement operator in reciprocal space.

Electron Spin Resonance of defects in the Haldane System Y(2)BaNiO(5)

We calculate the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of the antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain compound Y(2)BaNi(1-x)Mg(x)O(5) for different values of x and temperature T much lower than the Haldane gap (~100K). The low-energy spectrum of an anisotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian, with all parameters determined from experiment, has been solved using DMRG. The observed EPR spectra are quantitatively reproduced by this model. The presence of end-chain S=1/2 states is clearly observed as the main peak in the spectrum and the remaining structure is completely understood.

Triplet superconductivity in quasi one-dimensional systems

We study a Hubbard hamiltonian, including a quite general nearest-neighbor interaction, parametrized by repulsion V, exchange interactions Jz, Jperp, bond-charge interaction X and hopping of pairs W. The case of correlated hopping, in which the hopping between nearest neighbors depends upon the occupation of the two sites involved, is also described by the model for sufficiently weak interactions. We study the model in one dimension with usual continuum-limit field theory techniques, and determine the phase diagram. For arbitrary filling, we find a very simple necessary condition for the existence of dominant triplet superconducting correlations at large distance in the spin SU(2) symmetric case: 4V+J<0. In the correlated hopping model, the three-body interaction should be negative for positive V. We also compare the predictions of this weak-coupling treatment with numerical exact results for the correlated-hopping model obtained by diagonalizing small chains, and using novel techniques to determine the opening of the spin gap.

Phase Diagrams from Topological Transitions: The Hubbard Chain with Correlated Hopping

The quantum phase diagram of the Hubbard chain with correlated hopping is accurately determined through jumps in $π$ in the charge and spin Berry phases. The nature of each thermodynamic phase, and the existence of charge and spin gaps, is confirmed by calculating correlation functions and other fundamental quantities using numerical methods, and symmetry arguments. Remarkably we find striking similarities between the stable phases for moderate on-site Coulomb repulsion: spin Peierls, spin-density-wave and triplet superconductor, and those measured in (TMTSF)$_2$X.

Influence of finite Hund rules and charge transfer on properties of Haldane systems

We consider the Kondo-Hubbard model with ferromagnetic exchange coupling $% J_{H}$, showing that it is an approximate effective model for late transition metal-O linear systems. We study the dependence of the charge and spin gaps $Δ_{C}$, $Δ_{S}$, and several spin-spin correlation functions, including the hidden order parameter $Z(π)$, as functions of $J_{H}/t$ and $U/t$, by numerical diagonalization of finite systems. Except for $Z(π)$, all properties converge slowly to the strong-coupling limit. When $J_{H}/t\sim 2$ and $U/t\sim 7$ (the effective parameters that we obtain for Y_2BaNiO_5), $Δ_{S}$ is roughly half of the value expected from a strong-coupling expansion.

Angle resolved Cu and O photoemission intensities in CuO_2 planes

Using a mapping from the three-band extended Hubbard model for cuprate superconductors into a generalized t-J model, and exact diagonalization of the latter in a 4x4 cluster, we determine the quasiparticle weight for destruction of a Cu or an O electrons with definite wave vector k. We also derive an approximate but accurate analytical expression which relates the O intensity with the quasiparticle weight in the generalized t-J model, and use it to obtain the O intensity from results of the self-consistent Born approximation. The k-dependence of Cu and O intensities is markedly different. In particular the O intensity vanishes for k=(0,0). Our results are relevant for the interpretation of angle-resolved photoemission experiments.

Berry phases in superconducting transitions

I generalize the concept of Berry's geometrical phase for quasicyclic Hamiltonians to the case in which the ground state evolves adiabatically to an excited state after one cycle, but returns to the ground state after an integer number of cycles. This allows to extend the charge Berry phase gamma_c related to the macroscopic polarization, to many-body systems with fractional number of particles per site. Under certain conditions, gamma_c and the spin Berry phase gamma_s jump in pi at the boundary of superconducting phases. In the extended Hubbard chain with on-site attraction U and nearest-neighbor interaction V at quarter filling, the transitions detected agree very well with exact results in two limits solved by the Bethe ansatz, and with previous numerical studies. In chains with spin SU(2) symmetry, gamma_s jumps when a spin gap opens.

Spin dynamics of hole doped Y2BaNiO5

Starting from a multiband Hamiltonian containing the relevant Ni and O orbitals, we derive an effective Hamiltonian $H_{eff}$ for the low energy physics of doped Y$_{2}$BaNiO$_{5}.$ For hole doping, $H_{eff}$ describes O fermions interacting with S=1 Ni spins in a chain, and cannot be further reduced to a simple one-band model. Using numerical techniques, we obtain a dynamical spin structure factor with weight inside the Haldane gap. The nature of these low-energy excitations is identified and the emerging physical picture is consistent with most of the experimental information in Y% $_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$BaNiO$_{5}$

Quantum-Mechanical Position Operator and Localization in Extended Systems

We introduce a fundamental complex quantity, $z_{L}$, which allows us to discriminate between a conducting and non-conducting thermodynamic phase in extended quantum systems. Its phase can be related to the expectation value of the position operator, while its modulus provides an appropriate definition of a localization length. The expressions are valid for {\it any} fractional particle filling. As an illustration we use $z_{L}$ to characterize insulator to ``superconducting'' and Mott transitions in one-dimensional lattice models with infinite on-site Coulomb repulsion at quarter filling.

Spectral function and quasiparticle weight in the generalized t-J model

We extend to the spectral function an approach which allowed us to calculate the quasiparticle weight for destruction of a real electron Z_c sigma (k) (in contrast to that of creation of a spinless holon Z_h(k) in a generalized $t-J$ model, using the self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA). We compare our results with those obtained using the alternative approach of Sushkov et al., which also uses the SCBA. The results for Z_c sigma (k) are also compared with results obtained using the string picture and with exact diagonalizations of a 32-site square cluster. While on a qualitative level, all results look similar, our SCBA approach seems to compare better with the ED one. The effect of hopping beyond nearest neighbors, and that of the three-site term are discussed.

d-wave superconductivity in a generalized Hubbard model

We consider an extended Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor correlated hopping and next nearest-neighbor hopping t' obtained as an effective model for cuprate superconductors. Using a generalized Hartree-Fock BCS approximation, we find that for high enough t' and doping, antiferromagnetism is destroyed and the system exhibits d-wave superconductivity. Near optimal doping we consider the effect of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations on the normal self-energy using a phenomenological susceptibility. The resulting superconducting critical temperature as a function of doping is in good agreement with experiment.

Does long-range antiferromagnetism help or inhibit superconductivity?

We analyze the possible existence of a superconducting state in a background with long-range antiferromagnetism. We consider a generalized Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor correlated hopping in a square lattice. Near half filling, the model exhibits a d-wave-Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) solution in the paramagnetic state. The superconducting solution would be enhanced by the antiferromagnetic background if the contribution of triplet pairs with d-wave symmetry and total momentum (pi, pi) could be neglected. However, we find that due to their contribution, the coexistence of superconductivity and long-range antiferromagnetism is ruled out for large values of the Coulomb repulsion U. Spin-density wave fluctuations (SDWF) do not change this result.

Superconductivity with s and p-symmetries in an extended Hubbard model with correlated hopping

We consider a generalized Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbour repulsions U and V respectively, and nearest-neighbour hopping for spin up (down) which depends on the total occupation n_b of spin down (up) electrons on both sites involved. The hopping parameters are t_{AA}, t_{AB} and t_{BB} for n_b=0,1,2 respectively. We briefly summarize results which support that the model exhibits s-wave superconductivity for certain parameters and extend them by studying the Berry phases. Using a generalized Hartree-Fock(HF) BCS decoupling of the two and three-body terms, we obtain that at half filling, for t_{AB}<t_{AA}=t_{BB} and sufficiently small U and V the model leads to triplet p-wave superconductivity for a simple cubic lattice in any dimension. In one dimension, the resulting phase diagram is compared with that obtained numerically using two quantized Berry phases (topological numbers) as order parameters. While this novel method supports the previous results, there are quantitative differences.

"Superconductor"-insulator transitions in a Hubbard chain with nearest- neighbor and bond-charge interactions

We consider a half-filled generalized Hubbard chain with electron-hole symmetric correlated hopping and on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsions U and V respectively. In addition to the insulating charge- and spin-density wave phases for large V and U respectively, we identify a phase with dominant superconducting correlations at large distances for small U and V. Using two Berry phases (one associated to the charge and the other to the spin degrees of freedom) as discrete order parameters, we construct a phase diagram for the three thermodynamic phases.

On the stability of 2 \sqrt{2} x 2 \sqrt{2} oxygen ordered superstructures in YBa2Cu3O6+x

We have compared the ground-state energy of several observed or proposed " 2 \sqrt{2} x 2 \sqrt{2} oxygen (O) ordered superstructures " (from now on HS), with those of "chain superstructures" (CS) (in which the O atoms of the basal plane are ordered in chains), for different compositions x in YBa2Cu3O6+x. The model Hamiltonian contains i) the Madelung energy, ii) a term linear in the difference between Cu and O hole occupancies which controls charge transfer, and iii) covalency effects based on known results for $t-J$ models in one and two dimensions. The optimum distribution of charge is determined minimizing the total energy, and depends on two parameters which are determined from known results for x=1 and x=0.5. We obtain that on the O lean side, only CS are stable, while for x=7/8, a HS with regularly spaced O vacancies added to the x=1 structure is more stable than the corresponding CS for the same x. We find that the detailed positions of the atoms in the structure, and long-range Coulomb interactions, are crucial for the electronic structure, the mechanism of charge transfer, the stability of the different phases, and the possibility of phase separation.

Specific Heat of defects in the Haldane System Y_2BaNiO_5

We calculate the specific heat of the antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain compound Y_2BaNi_{1-x}Zn_xO_5 in the presence of a magnetic field. The low-energy spectrum of a Heisenberg Hamiltonian, which includes realistic anisotropies, has been solved using the density matrix renormalization group. The observed Schottky anomaly is very well described by this theory. For large chains ($N>50$), contrary to previous interpretations of the specific heat data, we find S=1/2 states. These results are thus also consistent with electron- spin-resonance data for NENP.

Optical properties of an effective one-band Hubbard model for the cuprates

We study the Cu and O spectral density of states and the optical conductivity of CuO_2 planes using an effective generalized one-band Hubbard model derived from the extended three-band Hubbard model. We solve exactly a square cluster of 10 unit cells and average the results over all possible boundary conditions, what leads to smooth functions of frequency. Upon doping, the Fermi energy jumps to Zhang-Rice states which are connected to the rest of the valence band (in contrast to an isolated new band in the middle of the gap). The transfer of spectral weight depends on the parameters of the original three-band model not only through the one-band effective parameters but also through the relevant matrix elements. We discuss the evolution of the gap upon doping. The optical conductivity of the doped system shows a mid-infrared peak due to intraband transitions, a pseudogap and a high frequency part related to interband transitions. Its shape and integrated weight up to a given frequency (including the Drude weight) agree qualitatively with experiments in the cuprates for low to moderate doping levels, but significant deviations exist for doping $x>0.3$.
