Superconductivity and incommensurate spin fluctuations in a generalized t-J model for the cuprates

We consider the slave-fermion Schwinger-boson decomposition of an effective model obtained through a systematic low-energy reduction of the three-band Hubbard Hamiltonian. The model includes a three-site term t'' similar to that obtained in the large-U limit of the Hubbard model but of opposite sign for realistic or large O-O hopping. For parameters close to the most realistic ones for the cuprates, the mean-field solution exhibits d+s superconductivity (predominantly d_{x^2-y^2}) with a dependence on doping x very similar to the experimentally observed. We also obtained incommensurate peaks at wave vectors near $π(1,1 +(-) 2x)$ in the spin structure factor, which also agree with experiment.

Quasiparticle photoemission intensity in doped two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets

Using the self-consistent Born approximation, and the corresponding wave function of the magnetic polaron, we calculate the quasiparticle weight corresponding to destruction of a real electron (in contrast to creation of a spinless holon), as a funtion of wave vector for one hole in a generalized $t-J$ model and the strong coupling limit of a generalized Hubbard model. The results are in excellent agreement with those obtained by exact diagonalization of a sufficiently large cluster. Only the Hubbard weigth compares very well with photoemission measurements in Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2.

Phase separation and valence instabilities in cuprate superconductors. Effective one-band model approach

We study the Cu-O valence instability (VI) and the related phase separation (PS) driven by Cu-O nearest-neighbor repulsion $U_{pd}$, using an effective extended one-band Hubbard model ($H_{eff}$) obtained from the extended three-bandHubbard model, through an appropriate low-energy reduction. $H_{eff}$ is solved by exact diagonalization of a square cluster with 10 unit cells and also within a slave-boson mean-field theory. Its parameters depend on doping for $U_{pd}\neq 0$ or on-site O repulsion $U_p\neq 0$. The results using both techniques coincide in that there is neither VI nor PS for doping levels $x<0.5$ if $U_{pd}\lesssim 2$ eV. The PS region begins for $U_{pd}\gtrsim 2$ eV at large doping $x>0.6$ and increases with increasing $U_{pd}$. The PS also increases with increasing on-site Cu repulsion $U_d$.

Excitons in insulating cuprates

We study the electronic excitations near the charge-transfer gap in insulating CuO$_2$ planes, starting from a six-band model which includes $% p_π$ and $d_{xy}$ orbitals and Cu-O nearest-neighbor repulsion $U_{pd}$. While the low lying electronic excitations in the doped system are well described by a modified $t-J$ model, the excitonic states of the insulator include hybrid $d_{xy}-$ $p_π$ states of $A_{2g}$ symmetry. We also obtain excitons of symmetries $B_{1g}$ and $E_u$, and eventually $A_{1g}$, which can be explained within a one-band model. The results agree with observed optical absorption and Raman excitations.

Anomalous flux quantization in a Hubbard ring with correlated hopping

We solve exactly a generalized Hubbard ring with twisted boundary conditions. The magnitude of the nearest-neighbor hopping depends on the occupations of the sites involved and the term which modifies the number of doubly occupied sites $t_{AB}=0$. Although $η$-pairing states with off-diagonal long-range order are part of the degenerate ground state, the behavior of the energy as a function of the twist rules out superconductivity in this limit. A small $t_{AB}$ breaks the degeneracy and for moderate repulsive $U$ introduce superconducting correlations which lead to ``anomalous'' flux quantization. Superconductivity from correlated hopping

We consider a chain described by a next-nearest-neighbor hopping combined with a nearest-neighbor spin flip. In two dimensions this three-body term arises from a mapping of the three-band Hubbard model for CuO$_2$ planes to a generalized $t-J$ model and for large O-O hopping favors resonance-valence-bond superconductivity of predominantly $d$-wave symmetry. Solving the ground state and low-energy excitations by analytical and numerical methods we find that the chain is a Luther-Emery liquid with correlation exponent $K_ρ = (2-n)^2/2$, where $n$ is the particle density.

Superconductivity in the cuprates

We evaluate numerically several superconducting correlation functions in a generalized $t-J$ model derived for hole-doped CuO$_2$ planes. The model includes a three-site term $t''$ similar to that obtained in the large $U$ limit of the Hubbard model but of opposite sign for realistic O-O hopping. For realistic parameters we obtain strong evidence of superconductivity of predominantly $d_{x^2-y^2}$ character. The ground state has a large overlap with a very simple resonating-valence-bond wave function with off-diagonal long-range order. This function reproduces the main features of the magnetic and superconducting correlation functions.

Exact Solution of a Hubbard Chain with Bond-Charge Interaction

We obtain the exact solution of a general Hubbard chain with kinetic energy $t$, bond-charge interaction $X$ and on-site interaction $U$ with the only restriction $t = X$. At zero temperature and half filling, the model exhibits a Mott transition at $U = 4t$. In the metallic phase and near half filling, superconducting states are part of the degenerate ground state and are favored for small $U$ if the system is slightly perturbed.

One Dimensional Oxygen Ordering in YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)

A model consisting of oxygen-occupied and -vacant chains is considered, with repulsive first and second nearest-neighbor interactions V1 and V2, respectively. The statistical mechanics and the diffraction spectrum of the model is solved exactly and analytically with the only assumption V1 >> V2. At temperatures T ~ V1 only a broad maximum at (1/2,0,0) is present, while for ABS(delta - 1/2) > 1/14 at low enough T, the peak splits into two. The simple expression for the diffraction intensity obtained for T << V1 represents in a more compact form previous results of Khachaturyan and Morris[1],extends them to all delta and T/V2 and leads to a good agreement with experiment. Impurity systems fluctuating between two magnetic configurations: candidates for non Fermi-liquid behavior

The appropriate generalization of the isotropic impurity Anderson model for valence fluctuations between two magnetic multiplets $l^n$ and $l^{n+1}$ is solved in the strong-coupling limit of Wilson's renormalization group for $l\leq$ 3. Except in the extreme case of $j-j$ coupling, the ground state is degenerate, the impurity magnetic moment is very small and is overscreened by the conduction electrons. The strong-coupling fixed point turns out to be unstable. Thus, at low enough temperatures the physics of the systems should be governed by an intermediate coupling fixed point and non Fermi-liquid behavior is expected.
