Phase diagram of the $t-t'-U$ chain at half filling

We study the half filled Hubbard chain including next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t'$. The model has three phases: one insulating phase with dominant spin-density-wave correlations at large distances (SDWI), another phase with dominant spin-dimer correlations or dimerized insulator (DI), and a third one in which long distance correlations indicate singlet superconductivity (SS). The boundaries of the SDWI are accurately determined numerically through a crossing of excited energy levels equivalent to the jump in the spin Berry phase. The DI-SS boundary is studied using several indicators like correlation exponent $K_ρ$, Drude weight $D_{c}$, localization parameter $z_{L}$ and charge gap $Δ_{c}$.

Effective three-band model for double perovskites

We start from a six-band model describing the transition-metal t2g orbitals of half-metallic double perovskite systems, such as Sr2FeMoO6, in which only one of the transition metal ions (Fe) contains important intratomic repulsion Ufe. By eliminating the Mo orbitals using a low-energy reduction similar to that used in the cuprates, we construct a Hamiltonian which contains only effective t2g Fe orbitals. This allows to treat exactly Ufe, and most of the Fe-Mo hopping. As an application, we treat the effective Hamiltonian in the slave-boson mean-field approximation and calculate the position of the metal-insulator transition and other quantities as a function of pressure or on-site energy difference.

Persistent currents in mesoscopic rings with a quantum dot

Using the Anderson model in the Kondo regime, we calculate the persistent current j in a ring with an embedded quantum dot (QD) as a function of the Aharonov-Bohm flux Phi for different ring length L, temperature T and broadening of the conduction states delta . For T=delta =0 and L >> xi, where xi is the Kondo screening length, Lj tends to the value for a non interacting ideal ring, while it is suppressed for a side coupled QD. For any L/xi, Lj is also suppressed when either T or delta increase above a fraction of the level spacing which depends on Phi.

Microscopic theory of vibronic dynamics in linear polyenes

We propose a novel approach to calculate dynamical processes at ultrafast time scale in molecules in which vibrational and electronic motions are strongly mixed. The relevant electronic orbitals and their interactions are described by a Hubbard model, while electron-phonon interaction terms account for the bond length dependence of the hopping and the change in ionic radii with valence charge. The latter term plays a crucial role in the non-adiabatic internal conversion process of the molecule. The time resolved photoelectron spectra are in good qualitative agreement with experiments.

Kondo and anti-Kondo resonances in transport through nanoscale devices

We study the current through a quantum wire side coupled to a quantum dot, and compare it with the case of an embedded dot. The system is modeled by the Anderson Hamiltonian for a linear chain, with one atom either coupled to (side-dot) or substituted by (embedded dot) a magnetic impurity. For realistic (small) hopping of the dot to the rest of the system, an exact relationship between both conductivities holds. We calculate the temperature dependence for moderate values of the Coulomb repulsion U using an interpolative perturbative scheme. For sufficiently large U and temperature greater than the Kondo temperature, the conductance as a function of gate voltage displays two extrema.

Line shape in the mirage experiment

Using a many-body theory, we calculate the change in differential conductance dI/dV after adding an impurity either on a clean surface or inside an elliptic quantum corral. Using the same set of parameteres for both cases, the qualitative features of the voltage dependence of the change in dI/dV observed in recent experiments, are reproduced.

Double exchange model for RuSr_2(Eu,Gd)Cu_2O_8

We propose a double exchange model to describe the RuO_2 planes of RuSr_2(Eu,Gd)Cu_2O_8. The Ru^+5 ions are described by localized spins, and additional electrons provided by the superconducting CuO_2 planes are coupled ferromagnetically to them by Hund rules coupling. We calculate the spin structure factor, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization as a function of magnetic field and temperature, using a Monte Carlo algorithm in which the Ru^+5 spins are treated as classical. Several experiments which seemed in contradiction with one another are explained by the theory.

Phase diagram of the Hubbard chain with two atoms per cell

We obtain the quantum phase diagram of the Hubbard chain with alternating on-site energy at half filling. The model is relevant for the ferroelectric perovskites and organic mixed-stack donor-acceptor crystals. For any values of the parameters, the band insulator is separated from the Mott insulator by a dimer phase. The boundaries are determined accurately by crossing of excited levels with particular discrete symmetries. We show that these crossings coincide with jumps of charge and spin Berry phases with a clear geometrical meaning.

Metal-insulator transition in the double perovskites

We construct an effective Hamiltonian for the motion of electrons among the transition metal ions of ordered double perovskites like Sr2FeMoO6. in which strong intra-atomic Coulomb repulsion U is present in only one of the inequivalent transition metal sites. Using a slave-boson formalism, we construct a phase diagram which describes a charge transfer transition between insulating and metallic behavior as the parameters of the model are changed. The parameters for Sr2FeMoO6 are estimated from first-principles calculations and a transition to the insulating state with negative pressure is obtained.

Many-body theory of the quantum mirage

In recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments, confinement in an elliptical corral has been used to project the Kondo effect from one focus to the other one. I solve the Anderson model at arbitrary temperatures, for an impurity hybridized with eigenstates of an elliptical corral, each of which has a resonant level width delta. This width is crucial. If delta < 20 meV, the Kondo peak disappears, while if delta > 80 meV, the mirage disappears. For particular conditions, a stronger mirage with the impurity out of the foci is predicted.

Phase diagram of the XXZ chain with next-nearest-neighbor interactions

We calculate the quantum phase diagram of the {\it XXZ} chain with nearest-neighbor (NN) $J_{1}$ and next-NN exchange $J_{2}$ with anisotropies $Δ_{1}$ and $Δ_{2}$ respectively. In particular we consider the case $Δ_{1}=-Δ_{2}$ to interpolate between the {\it XX} chain ($% Δ_{i}=0$) and the isotropic model with ferromagnetic $J_{2}$. For $% Δ_{1}<-1$, a ferromagnetic and two antiferromagnetic phases exist. For $| Δ_{i}| <1$, the boundary between the dimer and spin fluid phases is determined by the method of crossing of excitation spectra. For large $J_{2}/J_{1}$, this method seems to indicate the existence of a second spin fluid critical phase. However, an analysis of the spin stiffness and magnetic susceptibility for $Δ_{1}=Δ_{2}=1$ suggest that a small gap is present.

Superconductivity in the Kondo lattice: a mean-field approach

We calculate the superconducting critical temperature T_c and the Kondo temperature T_K of the Kondo lattice, decoupling the Kondo exchange interaction in the unrestricted Hartree-Fock (HF) Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) approximation. We obtain that both T_K and T_c have an exponential dependence in the Kondo coupling J_K. For optimum doping and realistic parameters, both temperatures fall in the experimentally observed range.

Magnetization jump in the XXZ chain with next-nearest-neighbor exchange

We study the dependence of the magnetization M with magnetic field B at zero temperature in the spin-1/2 XXZ chain with nearest-neighbor (NN) J1 and next-NN J2 exchange interactions, with anisotropies Delta1 and Delta2 respectively. The region of parameters for which a jump in M(B) exists is studied using numerical diagonalization, and analytical results for two magnons on a ferromagnetic background in the thermodynamic limit. We find a line in the parameter space (J2/J1, Delta1/J1, Delta2/J2) (determined by two simple equations) at which the ground state is highly degenerate. M(B) has a jump near this line, and at or near the isotropic case with ferromagnetic J1 and antiferromagnetic J2, with |J2/J1| near 1/4. These results are relevant for some systems containing CuO chains with edge-sharing CuO4 units.

Phase diagram of the extended Hubbard chain with charge-dipole interactions

We consider a modified extended Hubbard model (EHM) which, in addition to the on-site repulsion U and nearest-neighbor repulsion V, includes polarization effects in second-order perturbation theory. The model is equivalent to an EHM with renormalized U plus a next-nearest-neighbor repulsion term. Using a method based on topological quantum numbers (charge and spin Berry phases), we generalize to finite hopping t the quantum phase diagram in one dimension constructed by van den Brink et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 4658 (1995)). At hopping t=0 there are two charge density-wave phases, one spin density-wave phase and one intermediate phase with charge and spin ordering, depending on the parameter values. At t \neq 0 the nature of each phase is confirmed by studying correlation functions. However, in addition to the strong-coupling phases, a small region with bond ordering appears. The region occupied by the intermediate phase first increases and then decreases with increasing t, until it finally disappears for t of the order but larger than U. For small t, the topological transitions agree with the results of second order perturbation theory.

Metamagnetism in one dimensional systems with edge sharing CuO polihedra

We study a Heisenberg chain with nearest-neighbor (NN) J1 and next-NN J2 exchange interactions with anisotropies Delta_1 and Delta_2 respectively. We investigate by analytical and numerical methods the region of parameters for which there is a jump in the magnetization M as a function of magnetic field B. Some materials with edge sharing CuO polihedra are candidates to show an abrupt change in M(B).

Evidence of quantum criticality in the doped Haldane system Y2BaNiO5

Experimental bulk susceptibility X(T) and magnetization M(H,T) of the S=1-Haldane chain system doped with nonmagnetic impurities, Y2BaNi1-xZnxO5 (x=0.04,0.06,0.08), are analyzed. A numerical calculation for the low-energy spectrum of non-interacting open segments describes very well experimental data above 4 K. Below 4 K, we observe power-law behaviors, X(T)=T^-alpha and M(H,T)/T^(1-alpha)=f(alpha,(H/T)), with alpha (<1) depending on the doping concentration x.This observation suggests the appearance of a gapless quantum phase due to a broad distribution of effective couplings between the dilution-induced moments.

A numerical method for detecting incommensurate correlations in the Heisenberg zigzag ladder

We study two Heisenberg spin-1/2 chains coupled by a frustrating ``zigzag'' interaction. We are particularly interested in the regime of weak interchain coupling, which is difficult to analyse by either numerical or analytical methods. Previous density matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) studies of the isotropic model with open boundary conditions and sizeable interchain coupling have established the presence of incommensurate correlations and of a spectral gap. By using twisted boundary conditions with arbitrary twist angle, we are able to determine the incommensurabilities both in the isotropic case and in the presence of an exchange anisotropy by means of exact diagonalisation of relatively short finite chains of up to 24 sites. Using twisted boundary conditions results in a very smooth dependence of the incommensurabilities on system size, which makes the extrapolation to infinite systems significantly easier than for open or periodic chains.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended attractive Hubbard model for large nearest-neighbor repulsion

We consider the extended Hubbard model with attractive on-site interaction U and nearest-neighbor repulsions V. We construct an effective Hamiltonian H_{eff} for hopping t<<V and arbitrary U<0. Retaining the most important terms, H_{eff} can be mapped onto two XXZ models, solved by the Bethe ansatz. The quantum phase diagram shows two Luttinger liquid phases and a region of phase separation between them. For density n<0.422 and U<-4, singlet superconducting correlations dominate at large distances. For some parameters, the results are in qualitative agreement with experiments in BaKBiO.
