Quasiparticle dispersion near the Fermi surface in Na$_x$CoO$_2$

We construct an effective Hamiltonian for the motion of t2g highly correlated states in NaxCoO2. This three-band model includes the indirect Co-O-Co hopping t and the crystal-field splitting 3D. Calculations in a CoO6 cluster give the effective parameters t=100 meV and 3D=315 meV. The Hamiltonian is solved using a generalized slave-boson mean-field approximation. The results show a significant band renormalization. Without any additional hypothesis, the dispersion of the bands near the Fermi energy and Fermi surface topology agrees with angle-resolved photoemission experiments, in contrast to predictions using the local-density approximation.

Conductance through an array of quantum dots

We propose a simple approach to study the conductance through an array of $N$ interacting quantum dots, weakly coupled to metallic leads. Using a mapping to an effective site which describes the low-lying excitations and a slave-boson representation in the saddle-point approximation, we calculated the conductance through the system. Explicit results are presented for N=1 and N=3: a linear array and an isosceles triangle. For N=1 in the Kondo limit, the results are in very good agreement with previous results obtained with numerical renormalization group (NRG). In the case of the linear trimer for odd $N$, when the parameters are such that electron-hole symmetry is induced, we obtain perfect conductance $G_0=2e^2/h$. The validity of the approach is discussed in detail.

Nonequilibrium magnetotransport through a quantum dot: An interpolative perturbative approach

We study the differential conductance, spectral density and magnetization, for a quantum dot coupled to two conducting leads as a function of bias voltage, magnetic field and temperature. The system is modeled with the Anderson model solved using a spin dependent interpolative perturbative approximation in the Coulomb repulsion U that conserves the current. For large enough magnetic field, the differential conductance as a function of bias voltage shows split peaks. This splitting is larger than the corresponding splitting in the spectral density of states, in agreement with experiment.

Polarization dependence of x-ray absorption spectra in Na_xCoO_2

In order to shed light on the electronic structure of Na_xCoO_2, and motivated by recent Co L-edge X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) experiments with polarized light, we calculate the electronic spectrum of a CoO_6 cluster including all interactions between 3d orbitals. We obtain the ground state for two electronic occupations in the cluster that correspond nominally to all O in the O^{-2} oxidation state, and Co^{+3} or Co^{+4}. Then, all excited states obtained by promotion of a Co 2p electron to a 3d electron, and the corresponding matrix elements are calculated. A fit of the observed experimental spectra is good and points out a large Co-O covalency and cubic crystal field effects, that result in low spin Co 3d configurations. Our results indicate that the effective hopping between different Co atoms plays a major role in determining the symmetry of the ground state in the lattice. Remaining quantitative discrepancies with the XAS experiments are expected to come from composition effects of itineracy in the ground and excited states.

The effective Kondo model for a trimer on a metallic surface

I consider a Hubbard-Anderson model which describes localized orbitals in three different atoms hybridized both among themselves and with a continuum of extended states (ES). Using a generalized Schrieffer-Wolf transformation, I derive an effective Kondo model for the interaction between the doublet ground state of the isolated trimer and the ES. For an isoceles trimer with distances a, l, l between the atoms, the Kondo temperature is negligigle for l < a and has a maximum for finite l > a when a is small. The results agree with experiments for a Cr trimer on Au(111). [T. Jamneala et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 256804 (2001)].

Quantum phase diagram of the generalized ionic Hubbard model for AB$_{n}$ chains

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the Hubbard model for the AB$_{N-1}$ chain with filling 1/N, where $N$ is the number of atoms per unit cell. In the strong-coupling limit, a charge transition takes place from a band insulator (BI) to a correlated insulator (CI) for increasing on-site repulsion $U$ and positive on-site energy difference $Δ$ (energy at A sites lower than at B sites). In the weak-coupling limit, a bosonization analysis suggests that for $N > 2$ the physics is qualitatively similar to the case $N = 2$ which has already been studied: an intermediate phase emerges, which corresponds to a bond-ordered ferroelectric insulator (FI) with spontaneously broken inversion symmetry. We have determined the quantum phase diagram for the cases $N = 3$ and $N = 4$ from the crossings of energy levels of appropriate excited states, which correspond to jumps in the charge and spin Berry phases, and from the change of sign of the localization parameter $z_{L}^{c}$. From these techniques we find that, quantitatively, the BI and FI phases are broader for $N > 2$ than when $N = 2$, in agreement with the bosonization analysis. Calculations of the Drude weight and $z_{L}^{c}$ indicate that the system is insulating for all parameters, with the possible exception of the boundary between the BI and FI phases.

Anisotropic intermediate valence in Yb2M3Ga9 (M = Rh, Ir)

The intermediate valence compounds Yb2M3Ga9 (M = Rh, Ir) exhibit an anisotropic magnetic susceptibility. We report measurements of the temperature dependence of the 4f occupation number, nf(T), for Yb2M3Ga9 as well as the magnetic inelastic neutron scattering spectrum Smag at 12 and 300 K for Yb2Rh3Ga9. Both nf(T) and Smag were calculated for the Anderson impurity model with crystal field terms within an approach based on the non-crossing approximation. These results corroborate the importance of crystal field effects in these materials; they also suggest that Anderson lattice effects are important to the physics of Yb2M3Ga9.

Crystal-field effects in the mixed-valence compounds Yb2M3Ga9 (M= Rh, Ir)

Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements have been carried out on single crystals of the intermediate valence compounds Yb2Rh3Ga9 and Yb2Ir3Ga9. These measurements reveal a large anisotropy due apparently to an interplay between crystalline electric field (CEF) and Kondo effects. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility can be modelled using the Anderson impurity model including CEF within an approach based on the Non-Crossing Approximation.

Mirages and many-body effects in quantum corrals

In the experiment of the quantum mirage, confinement of surface states in an elliptical corral has been used to project the Kondo effect from one focus where a magnetic impurity was placed, to the other empty focus. The signature of the Kondo effect is seen as a Fano antiresonance in scanning tunneling spectroscopy. This experiment combines the many-body physics of the Kondo effect with the subtle effects of confinement. In this work we review the essential physics of the quantum mirage experiment, and present new calculations involving other geometries and more than one impurity in the corral, which should be relevant for other experiments that are being made, and to discern the relative importance of the hybridization of the impurity with surface Vs and bulk Vb states. The intensity of the mirage imposes a lower bound to Vs/Vb which we estimate. Our emphasis is on the main physical ingredients of the phenomenon and the many-body aspects, like the dependence of the observed differential conductance with geometry, which cannot be calculated with alternative one-body theories. The system is described with an Anderson impurity model solved using complementary approaches: perturbation theory in the Coulomb repulsion U, slave bosons in mean field and exact diagonalization plus embedding.

The dimerized phase of ionic Hubbard models

We derive an effective Hamiltonian for the ionic Hubbard model at half filling, extended to include nearest-neighbor repulsion. Using a spin-particle transformation, the effective model is mapped onto simple spin-1 models in two particular cases. Using another spin-particle transformation, a slightly modified model is mapped into an SU(3) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model whose exact ground state is known to be spontaneously dimerized. From the effective models several properties of the dimerized phase are discussed, like ferroelectricity and fractional charge excitations. Using bosonization and recent developments in the theory of macroscopic polarization, we show that the polarization is proportional to the charge of the elementary excitations.

Quartett formation at (100)/(110)-interfaces of d-wave superconductors

Across a faceted (100)/(110) interface between two d-wave-superconductors the structure of the superconducting order parameter leads to an alternating sign of the local Josephson coupling. Describing the Cooper pair motion along and across the interface by a one-dimensional boson lattice model, we show that a small attractive interaction between the bosons boosts boson binding at the interface -- a phenomenon, which is intimately tied to the staggered sequence of 0- and Pi-junction contacts along the interface. We connect this finding to the recently observed h/4e oscillations in (100)/(110) SQUIDS of cuprate superconductors.

Detection of topological transitions by transport through molecules and nanodevices

We analyze the phase transitions of an interacting electronic system weakly coupled to free-electron leads by considering its zero-bias conductance. This is expressed in terms of two effective impurity models for the cases with and without spin degeneracy. We demonstrate using the half-filled ionic Hubbard ring that the weight of the first conductance peak as a function of external flux or of the difference in gate voltages between even and odd sites allows one to identify the topological charge transition between a correlated insulator and a band insulator.

Spin-charge separation in Aharonov-Bohm rings of interacting electrons

We investigate the properties of strongly correlated electronic models on a flux-threaded ring connected to semi-infinite free-electron leads. The interference pattern of such an Aharonov-Bohm ring shows sharp dips at certain flux values, determined by the filling, which are a consequence of spin-charge separation in a nanoscopic system.

Magnetic and orbital ordering of RuO2 planes in RuSr2(Eu,Gd)Cu2O8

We start from an effective Hamiltonian for Ru ions in a square lattice, which includes the on-site interactions between t_2g orbitals derived from Coulomb repulsion, and a tetragonal crystal-field splitting. Using perturbation theory in the hopping terms, we derive effective Hamiltonians to describe the RuO2 planes of RuSr2(Eu,Gd)Cu2O8. For undoped planes (formal valence Ru{+5}), depending on the parameters we find three possible orderings of spin and orbitals, and construct a phase diagram. This allows to put constraints on the parameters based on experimental data. When electron doping consistent with the hole doping of the superconducting RuO2 planes is included, we obtain (for reasonable parameters) a double-exchange model with infinite antiferromagnetic coupling between itinerant electrons and localized spins. This model is equivalent to one used before [H. Aliaga and A. A. Aligia, Physica B 320, 34 (2002)] which consistently explains the seemingly contradictory magnetic properties of RuSr2(Eu,Gd)Cu2O8.

Exact Bond Ordered Ground State for the Transition Between the Band and the Mott Insulator

We derive an effective Hamiltonian $H_{eff}$ for an ionic Hubbard chain, valid for $t\ll U,Δ$, where $t$ is the hopping, $U$ the Coulomb repulsion, and $Δ$ the charge transfer energy. $H_{eff}$ is the minimal model for describing the transition from the band insulator (BI) ($Δ-U\gg t$) and the Mott insulator (MI) ($U-Δ\gg t$). Using spin-particle transformations (Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{86}, 1082 (2001)), we map $H_{eff}(U=Δ)$ into an SU(3) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model whose exact ground state is known. In this way, we show rigorously that a spontaneously dimerized insulating ferroelectric phase appears in the transition region between the BI and MI.

Charge dynamics in the Mott insulating phase of the ionic Hubbard model

We extend to charge and bond operators the transformation that maps the ionic Hubbard model at half filling onto an effective spin Hamiltonian. Using these operators we calculate the amplitude of the charge density wave in different dimensions. In one dimension, the charge-charge correlations at large distance d decay as 1/(d^3 ln^{3/2}d), in spite of the presence of a charge gap, as a consequence of remaining charge-spin coupling. Bond-bond correlations decay as (-1)^d 1/(d ln^{3/2}d) as in the usual Hubbard model.

One- and many-body effects on mirages in quantum corrals

Recent interesting experiments used scanning tunneling microscopy to study systems involving Kondo impurities in quantum corrals assembled on Cu or noble metal surfaces. The solution of the two-dimensional one-particle Schrodinger equation in a hard wall corral without impurity is useful to predict the conditions under which the Kondo effect can be projected to a remote location (the quantum mirage). To model a soft circular corral, we solve this equation under the potential W*delta(r-r0), where r is the distance to the center of the corral and r0 its radius. We expand the Green's function of electron surface states Gs0 for r<r0 as a discrete sum of contributions from single poles at energies epsilon_i-I*delta_i. The imaginary part delta_i is the half-width of the resonance produced by the soft confining potential, and turns out to be a simple increasing function of epsilon_i. In presence of an impurity, we solve the Anderson model at arbitrary temperatures using the resulting expression for Gs0 and perturbation theory up to second order in the Coulomb repulsion U. We calculate the resulting change in the differential conductance Delta dI/dV as a function of voltage and space, in circular and elliptical corrals, for different conditions, including those corresponding to recent experiments. The main features are reproduced. The role of the direct hybridization between impurity and bulk, the confinement potential, the size of the corral and temperature on the intensity of the mirage are analyzed. We also calculate spin-spin correlation functions.

Phase diagram of the $CuO_{3}$ chains in $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+X}$ and $PrBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+X}$

We use a mapping of the multiband Hubbard model for $CuO_{3}$ chains in $RBa_{2}Cu_{3}0_{6+x}$ (R=Y or a rare earth) onto a $t-J$ model and the description of the charge dynamics of the latter in terms pf s spinless model, to study the electronic structure of the chains. We briefly review results for the optical conductivity and we calculate the quantum phase diagram of quarter filled chains including Coulomb repulsion up to that between next-nearest-neighbor $Cu$ atoms $V_{2}$, using the resulting effective Hamiltonian, mapped onto an XXZ chain, and the method of crossing of excitation spectra. The method gives accurate results for the boundaries of the metallic phase in this case. The inclusion of $V_{2}$ greatly enhances the region of metallic behavior of the chains.
