Universal scaling in nonequilibrium transport through an Anderson impurity

Using non-equilibrium renormalized perturbation theory, we calculate the conductance G as a function of temperature T and bias voltage V for an Anderson model, suitable for describing transport properties through a quantum dot. For renormalized parameters that correspond to the extreme Kondo limit, we do not find a simple scaling formula beyond a quadratic dependence in T and V. However, if valence fluctuations are allowed, we find agreement with recent experiments.

Microcavity exciton-polariton mediated Raman scattering: Experiments and theory

We studied the intensity of resonant Raman scattering due to optical phonons in a planar II-VI-type semiconductor microcavity in the regime of strong coupling between light and matter. Two different sets of independent experiments were performed at near outgoing resonance with the middle polariton (MP)branch of the cavity. In the first, the Stokes-shifted photons were kept at exact resonance with the MP, varying the photonic or excitonic character of the polariton. In the second, only the incoming light wavelength was varied, and the resonant profile of the inelastic scattered intensity was studied when the system was tuned out of the resonant condition. Taking some matrix elements as free parameters, both independent experiments are quantitatively described by a model which incorporates lifetime effects in both excitons and photons, and the coupling of the cavity photons to the electron-hole continuum. The model is solved using a Green's function approach which treats the exciton-photon coupling nonperturbatively.

Photoluminiscence of a quantum dot hybridized with a continuum

We calculate the intensity of photon emission from a trion in a single quantum dot, as a function of energy and gate voltage, using the impurity Anderson model and variational wave functions. Assuming a flat density of conduction states and constant hybridization energy, the results agree with the main features observed in recent experiments: non-monotonic dependence of the energy on gate voltage, non-Lorentzian line shapes, and a line width that increases near the regions of instability of the single electron final state to occupations zero or two.

Polariton-mediated Raman scattering in microcavities: A Green's function approach

We present calculations of the intensity of polariton-mediated inelastic light scattering in semiconductor microcavities within a Green's function framework. In addition to reproducing the strong coupling of light and matter, this method also enables the inclusion of damping mechanisms in a consistent way. Our results show excellent agreement with recent Raman scattering experiments.

Thermal transport in one-dimensional spin heterostructures

We study heat transport in a one-dimensional inhomogeneous quantum spin 1/2 system. It consists of a finite-size XX spin chain coupled at its ends to semi-infinite XX and XY chains at different temperatures, which play the role of heat and spin reservoirs. After using the Jordan-Wigner transformation we map the original spin Hamiltonian into a fermionic Hamiltonian, which contains normal and pairing terms. We find the expressions for the heat currents and solve the problem with a non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. We analyze the behavior of the heat currents as functions of the model parameters. When finite magnetic fields are applied at the two reservoirs, the system exhibits rectification effects in the heat flow.

Nonequilibrium transport through a singlet-triplet Anderson impurity

We study the Anderson model in which a configuration with a doublet is hybridized with another with a singlet and a triplet. We calculate the conductance through the system as a function of temperature and bias voltage, near the quantum critical line for which the system is exactly solvable. The results explain recent transport measurements in a single-molecule quantum dot.

Kondo effect in transport through Aharonov-Bohm and Aharonov-Casher interferometers

We derive the extension of the Hubbard model to include Rashba spin-orbit coupling that correctly describes Aharonov-Bohm and Aharonov-Casher phases in a ring under applied magnetic and electric fields. When the ring is connected to conducting leads, we develop a formalism that is able to describe both, Kondo and interference effects. We find that in the Kondo regime, the spin-orbit coupling reduces strongly the conductance from the unitary limit. This effect in combination with the magnetic flux, can be used to produce spin polarized carriers.

Dynamical mean field theory of an effective three-band model for Na$_x$CoO$_2$

We derive an effective Hamiltonian for highly correlated $t_{2g}$ states centered at the Co sites of Na$_x$CoO$_2$. The essential ingredients of the model are an O mediated hopping, a trigonal crystal-field splitting, and on-site effective interactions derived from the exact solution of a multi-orbital model in a CoO$_6$ cluster, with parameters determined previously. The effective model is solved by dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We obtain a Fermi surface (FS) and electronic dispersion that agrees well with angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES). Our results also elucidate the origin of the "sinking-pockets" in different doping regimes.

Conductance through strongly interacting rings in a magnetic field

We study the conductance through finite Aharonov-Bohm rings of interacting electrons weakly coupled to non-interacting leads at two arbitrary sites. This model can describe an array of quantum dots with a large charging energy compared to the interdot overlap. As a consequence of the spin-charge separation, which occurs in these highly correlated systems, the transmittance is shown to present pronounced dips for particular values of the magnetic flux piercing the ring. We analyze this effect by numerical and analytical means and show that the zero-temperature equilibrium conductance in fact presents these striking features which could be observed experimentally.

Ferrotoroidic Moment as a Quantum Geometric Phase

We present a geometric characterization of the ferrotoroidic moment in terms of a set of Abelian Berry phases. We also introduce a fundamental complex quantity which provides an alternative way to calculate the ferrotoroidic moment and its moments, and is derived from a second order tensor. This geometric framework defines a natural computational approach for density functional and many-body theories.

Features of spin-charge separation in the equilibrium conductance through finite rings

We calculate the conductance through rings with few sites $L$ described by the $t-J$ model, threaded by a magnetic flux $Φ$ and weakly coupled to conducting leads at two arbitrary sites. The model can describe a circular array of quantum dots with large charging energy $U$ in comparison with the nearest-neighbor hopping $t$. We determine analytically the particular values of $Φ$ for which a depression of the transmittance is expected as a consequence of spin-charge separation. We show numerically that the equilibrium conductance at zero temperature is depressed at those particular values of $Φ$ for most systems, in particular at half filling, which might be easier to realize experimentally.

Spin-charge separation in strongly interacting finite ladder rings

We study the conductance through Aharonov-Bohm finite ladder rings with strongly interacting electrons, modelled by the prototypical t-J model. For a wide range of parameters we observe characteristic dips in the conductance as a function of magnetic flux, predicted so far only in chains which are a signature of spin and charge separation. These results open the possibility of observing this peculiar many-body phenomenon in anisotropic ladder systems and in real nanoscopic devices.

Incommmensurability and unconventional superconductor to insulator transition in the Hubbard model with bond-charge interaction

We determine the quantum phase diagram of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with bond-charge interaction X in addition to the usual Coulomb repulsion U at half-filling. For large enough X and positive U the model shows three phases. For large U the system is in the spin-density wave phase already known in the usual Hubbard model. As U decreases, there is first a spin transition to a spontaneously dimerized bond-ordered wave phase and then a charge transition to a novel phase in which the dominant correlations at large distances correspond to an incommensurate singlet superconductor.

Spectral density of an interacting dot coupled indirectly to conducting leads

We study the spectral density of electrons rho in an interacting quantum dot (QD) with a hybridization lambda to a non-interacting QD, which in turn is coupled to a non-interacting conduction band. The system corresponds to an impurity Anderson model in which the conduction band has a Lorentzian density of states of width Delta2. We solved the model using perturbation theory in the Coulomb repulsion U (PTU) up to second order and a slave-boson mean-field approximation (SBMFA). The PTU works surprisingly well near the exactly solvable limit Delta2 -> 0. For fixed U and large enough lambda or small enough Delta2, the Kondo peak in rho(omega) splits into two peaks. This splitting can be understood in terms of weakly interacting quasiparticles. Before the splitting takes place the universal properties of the model in the Kondo regime are lost. Using the SBMFA, simple analytical expressions for the occurrence of split peaks are obtained. For small or moderate Delta2, the side bands of rho(omega) have the form of narrow resonances, that were missed in previous studies using the numerical renormalization group. This technique also has shortcomings for describing properly the split Kondo peaks. As the temperature is increased, the intensity of the split Kondo peaks decreases, but it is not completely suppressed at high temperatures.

Effects of interactions in transport through Aharonov-Bohm-Casher interferometers

We study the conductance through a ring described by the Hubbard model (such as an array of quantum dots), threaded by a magnetic flux and subject to Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We develop a formalism that is able to describe the interference effects as well as the Kondo effect when the number of electrons in the ring is odd. In the Kondo regime, the SOC reduces the conductance from the unitary limit, and in combination with the magnetic flux, the device acts as a spin polarizer.

Theory of polariton mediated Raman scattering in microcavities

We calculate the intensity of the polariton mediated inelastic light scattering in semiconductor microcavities. We treat the exciton-photon coupling nonperturbatively and incorporate lifetime effects in both excitons and photons, and a coupling of the photons to the electron-hole continuum. Taking the matrix elements as fitting parameters, the results are in excellent agreement with measured Raman intensities due to optical phonons resonant with the upper polariton branches in II-VI microcavities with embedded CdTe quantum wells.

hc/4e oscillations in a model for (100)/(110) SQUIDs of d-wave superconductors

We use a model of hard-core bosons to describe a SQUID built with two crystals of $d_{x^2-y^2}$-superconductors with orientations (100) and (110). Across the two faceted (100)/(110) interfaces, the structure of the superconducting order parameter leads to an alternating sign of the local Josephson coupling, and the possibility of quartet formation. Using a mapping of the boson model to an $XXZ$ model, we calculate numerically the energy of the system as a function of the applied magnetic flux, finding signals of $hc/4e$ oscillations in a certain region of parameters. This region has a large overlap to that at which binding of bosons exists.

Electronic structure and Fermi surface tolopogy of Na$_x$CoO$_2$

We construct an effective Hamiltonian for the motion of T2g highly correlated states in NaxCoO2. We solve exactly a multiband model in a CoO6 cluster with electronic occupation corresponding to a nominal Co valence of either +3 or +4. Using the ensuing ground states, we calculate the effective O mediated hopping t=0.10 eV between many-body T2g states, and estimate the direct hopping t'~0.04 eV. The trigonal splitting 3D=0.315 eV is taken from recent quantum chemistry calculations. The resulting effective Hamiltonian is solved using a generalized slave-boson mean-field approximation. The results show a significant band renormalization and a Fermi surface topology that agrees with experiment, in contrast to predictions using the local-density approximation.
