Transverse Structure of Nucleon Parton Distributions from Lattice QCD

This work presents the first calculation in lattice QCD of three moments of spin-averaged and spin-polarized generalized parton distributions in the proton. It is shown that the slope of the associated generalized form factors decreases significantly as the moment increases, indicating that the transverse size of the light-cone quark distribution decreases as the momentum fraction of the struck parton increases.

Light hadron spectrum in three-flavor QCD with O(a)-improved Wilson quark action

We report on a calculation of the light hadron spectrum and quark masses in three-flavor dynamical QCD using the non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson quark action and a renormalization-group improved gauge action. Simulations are carried out on a 16^3 \times 32 lattice at β=1.9, where a^{-1} \simeq 2GeV, with 6 ud quark masses corresponding to m_{pi}/m_{rho} \simeq 0.64-0.77 and 2 s quark masses close to the physical value. We observe that the inclusion of dynamical strange quark brings the lattice QCD meson spectrum to good agreement with experiment. Dynamical strange quarks also lead to a reduction of the uds quark masses by about 15%.

Study of finite volume effects in the non-perturbative determination of $\csw$ with the SF method in full three-flavor lattice QCD

The non-perturbative $\csw$ determined by the Schrödinger functional (SF) method with the RG-improved gauge action in dynamical $N_f=3$ QCD shows a finite volume effect when the numerical simulations are carried out at a constant lattice size $L/a$. We remove the unwanted finite volume effect by keeping physical lattice extent $L$ at a constant. The details of the method and the result obtained for non-perturbative $\csw$ with a constant $L$ are reported.

Continuum limit of proton decay matrix elements in quenched lattice QCD

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the parameters αand βwhich are necessary in the theoretical estimation of the proton lifetime in grand unified theories (GUTs) using chiral lagrangian approach. The simulation is carried out using the Wilson quark action at three gauge coupling constants in the quenched approximation. We obtain |α(2GeV)|=0.0091(08)(^{+10}_{-19})GeV^3 and |β(2GeV)|=0.0098(08)(^{+10}_{-20})GeV^3 in the continuum limit where the first error is statistical and the second one is due to scale setting.

Non-Perturbative Determination of $c_{\rm SW}$ in Three-flavor Dynamical QCD

We present a fully non-perturbative determination of the $O(a)$ improvement coefficient $c_{\rm SW}$ in three-flavor dynamical QCD for the RG improved as well as the plaquette gauge actions, using the Schrödinger functional scheme. Results are compared with one-loop estimates at weak gauge coupling.

Measurement of the CKM Matrix Element |Vub| with B->rho e nu Decays

We present a measurement of the branching fraction for the rare decays B->rho e nu and extract a value for the magnitude of Vub, one of the smallest elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing matrix. The results are given for five different calculations of form factors used to parametrize the hadronic current in semileptonic decays. Using a sample of 55 million BBbar meson pairs recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- storage ring, we obtain Br(B0->rho- e+ nu)=(3.29 +-0.42 +-0.47 +-0.60) x 10^-4 and |Vub|=(3.64 +-0.22 +-0.25 +0.39-0.56)x10^-3, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and theoretical, respectively.

Calculation of Nucleon Electromagnetic Form Factors

The fomalism is developed to express nucleon matrix elements of the electromagnetic current in terms of form factors consistent with the translational, rotational, and parity symmetries of a cubic lattice. We calculate the number of these form factors and show how appropriate linear combinations approach the continuum limit.

Continuum Extrapolation of Moments of Nucleon Quark Distributions in Full QCD

Moments of light cone quark density, helicity, and transversity distributions are calculated in unquenched lattice QCD at $β= 5.5$ and $β= 5.3$ using Wilson fermions on $ 16^3 \times 32 $ lattices. These results are combined with earlier calculations at $β= 5.6$ using SESAM configurations to study the continuum limit.

Lattice Calculation of Baryon Masses using the Clover Fermion Action

We present a calculation of the lowest-lying baryon masses in the quenched approximation to QCD. The calculations are performed using a non-perturbatively improved clover fermion action, and a splitting is found between the masses of the nucleon and its parity partner. An analysis of the mass of the first radial excitation of the nucleon finds a value considerably larger than that of the parity partner of the nucleon, and thus little evidence for the Roper resonance as a simple three-quark state

Excited nucleon spectrum using a non-perturbatively improved clover fermion action

We discuss the extraction of negative-parity baryon masses from lattice QCD calculations. The mass of the lowest-lying negative-parity $J = 1/2^{-}$ state is computed in quenched lattice QCD using an ${\cal O}(a)$-improved clover fermion action, and a splitting found with the nucleon mass. The calculation is performed on two lattice volumes, and three lattice spacings enabling a study of both finite-volume and finite-lattice-spacing uncertainties. A measurement of the first excited radial excitation of the nucleon finds a mass considerably larger than that of the negative-parity ground state, in accord with other lattice determinations but in disagreement with experiment. Results are also presented for the lightest negative-parity $I=3/2$ state.

The helicity amplitudes A$_{1/2}$ and A$_{3/2}$ for the D$_{13}(1520)$ resonance obtained from the $\vecγ \vec{p} \to p π^0$ reaction}

The helicity dependence of the $\vecγ \vec{p} \to p π^0$ reaction has been measured for the first time in the photon energy range from 550 to 790 MeV. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4$π$-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam, and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. These data are predominantly sensitive to the $D_{13}(1520)$ resonance and are used to determine its parameters.

Excitation Spectra in a Heavy-Light Meson-Meson System

A system of two static quarks, at fixed distances r, and two light quarks is studied on an anisotropic lattice. Excitations by operators emphasizing quark or gluon degrees of freedom are examined. The maximum entropy method is applied in the spectral analysis. These simulations ultimately aim at learning about mechanisms of hadronic interaction.

Extraction of K-->pipi Matrix Elements with Wilson Fermions

We present the status of a lattice calculation for the K-->pipi matrix elements of the (delta S=1) effective weak Hamiltonian, directly with two pion in the final state. We study the energy shift of two pion in a finite volume both in the I=0 and I=2 channels. We explain a method to avoid the Goldstone pole contamination in the computation of renormalization constants for (delta I=3/2) operators. Finally we show some preliminary results for the matrix elements of (delta I=1/2) operators. Our quenched simulation is done at beta=6.0, with Wilson fermions, on a (24^3 X 64) lattice.

First measurement of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for Hydrogen from 200 to 800 MeV

A direct measurement of the helicity dependence of the total photoabsorption cross section on the proton was carried out at MAMI (Mainz) in the energy range 200 < E_gamma < 800 MeV. The experiment used a 4$π$ detection system, a circularly polarized tagged photon beam and a frozen spin target. The contributions to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule and to the forward spin polarizability $γ_0$ determined from the data are 226 \pm 5 (stat)\pm 12(sys) μb and -187 \pm 8 (stat)\pm 10(sys)10^{-6} fm^4, respectively, for 200 < E_γ< 800 MeV.

The Cosmic Background Radiation circa nu2K

We describe the implications of cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations and galaxy and cluster surveys of large scale structure (LSS) for theories of cosmic structure formation, especially emphasizing the recent Boomerang and Maxima CMB balloon experiments. The inflation-based cosmic structure formation paradigm we have been operating with for two decades has never been in better shape. Here we primarily focus on a simplified inflation parameter set, {omega_b,omega_{cdm},Omega_{tot}, Omega_Λ,n_s,τ_C, σ_8}. Combining all of the current CMB+LSS data points to the remarkable conclusion that the local Hubble patch we can access has little mean curvature (Omega_{tot}=1.08\pm 0.06) and the initial fluctuations were nearly scale invariant (n_s=1.03\pm 0.08), both predictions of (non-baroque) inflation theory. The baryon density is found to be slightly larger than that preferred by independent Big Bang Nucleosynthesis estimates (omega_b=0.030\pm 0.005 cf. 0.019\pm 0.002). The CDM density is in the expected range (omega_{cdm}=0.17 \pm 0.02). Even stranger is the CMB+LSS evidence that the density of the universe is dominated by unclustered energy akin to the cosmological constant (Omega_Λ=0.66\pm 0.06), at the same level as that inferred from high redshift supernova observations. We also sketch the CMB+LSS implications for massive neutrinos.

The Quintessential CMB, Past & Future

The past, present and future of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy research is discussed, with emphasis on the Boomerang and Maxima balloon experiments. These data are combined with large scale structure (LSS) information and high redshift supernova (SN1) observations to explore the inflation-based cosmic structure formation paradigm. Here we primarily focus on a simplified inflation parameter set, {omega_b,omega_{cdm},Omega_{tot}, Omega_Q,w_Q, n_s,tau_C, sigma_8}. After marginalizing over the other cosmic and experimental variables, we find the current CMB+LSS+SN1 data gives Omega_{tot}=1.04\pm 0.05, consistent with (non-baroque) inflation theory. Restricting to Omega_{tot}=1, we find a nearly scale invariant spectrum, n_s =1.03 \pm 0.07. The CDM density, omega_{cdm}=0.17\pm 0.02, is in the expected range, but the baryon density, omega_b=0.030\pm 0.004, is slightly larger than the current nucleosynthesis estimate. Substantial dark energy is inferred, Omega_Q\approx 0.68\pm 0.05, and CMB+LSS Omega_Q values are compatible with the independent SN1 estimates. The dark energy equation of state, parameterized by a quintessence-field pressure-to-density ratio w_Q, is not well determined by CMB+LSS (w_Q<-0.3 at 95%CL), but when combined with SN1 the resulting w_Q<-0.7 limit is quite consistent with the w_Q=-1 cosmological constant case. Though forecasts of statistical errors on parameters for current and future experiments are rosy, rooting out systematic errors will define the true progress.
